Prevent server hopper : Random location after connected
ActionManZlt replied to benw's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is an interesting idea, but would probably piss off a lot of people unless refined. I like the above suggestion of only doing it to people who abuse the system, such as relogging twice in one minute... although, you'd have to warn people about this, because there are legit reasons for doing this -- such as accidentally joining the wrong server, and immediately switching to your intended server. I've been thinking that the DayZ back-story should try to explain the "sharded" servers, server-bound items, DC'ers and server hoppers (as well as mitigating those exploits with things like spawn/despawn timers, etc...) by stealing the idea from Sliders -- each server is Chernarus in a parallel universe, and we've all got a high-tech wrist-watch that lets us teleport to different parallel universes at will (by pressing abort). Popping up in a different place in that new universe would work too, and make you really think twice about using your teleporter to get away from a bad situation -- maybe your new situation will be more dangerous. Although -- this can be exploited by simply DC'ing and reconnecting over and over until you get a "good" spawn... -
I usually don't carry any flares/lights unless it's a new moon (those really dark nights). 1xfrag, for exceptional circumstances (or 1 m203 if i'm super geared up). 1xSmoke when you want to piss off a zombie indirectly, or to let another survivor know they should move on. 2x water bottles -- invaluable stuff. Empty bottles/cans if I've only just started a character and have empty slots. Inventory priority is given to meds, especially with the chance of broken bones in 1.7.1.5. Heh, I've been playing Arma since it was called Operation Flashpoint (before codemasters stole that name), and that idea is now so obvious that I'm kicking myself for never thinking of it! Thanks!

Will Dayz run on Macbook Retina Disp.?

Games don't run on your monitor, they run on the computer plugged into the monitor. RL isn't CSI ;P -
Does anyone know of a "Seperate" Characters server?
ActionManZlt replied to SergeantTeddy (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I accidentally joined one once, and freaked out because I thought my character had been deleted! They have non-standard names, unlike all the real servers. Beware though, these are obviously hacked versions of the server mod/mission, and unofficial, so use them at your own risk. It's pretty theoretical that any harm could come out of playing on one, so probably not a concern... but it might also be taboo to discuss them here? -
Every server is a role-playing server. Some people role-play murderers. That's fair. It's still role play :P Best way to get away from the shoot-on-sight gameplay is to find a community, like a clan/arma-group in your timezone, and join their forum / voice-chat / etc, and then play with them. When trying to meet up with random players, I find it's much easier when my characters are young and have no gear -- meeting other noobs on the beaches is usually safe (and fairly risk-free, because you've got no good gear to lose yet). I've had some great experiences dying with other groups of noobs near the coast, as we all tentatively try to trust each other. When meeting people inland, they're probably scared shitless of losing their gear, and would rather defend themselves from the imagined threat than risk talking to you. When I see people inland (when I'm all geared up), I'll usually just fire warning shots near them, then run the F away!!
-
It already happens on a person-by-person basis anyway, when the game decides to delete your gear and spawn you in the debug-wilderness for no reason. It's an alpha: you should expect your character to be wiped by the time the mod enters beta or official release (or retail, if that's a possibility).

How do you pronounce it, and which one is officially correct -- DayZee or DayZed? Seeing Rocket is a Kiwi, I'm guessing that he calls it DayZed...? Plus DayZee sounds like Daisy, which is ironically cute for such a brutal game :D

Sometimes (not sure if bug or intented), you can scroll your mouse wheel so the menu appears, then put your cursor over a person/building/object, and it simply displays the distance to the object in the middle of your HUD...

Yeah AFAIK the motorbike has 2 seats, but the bicycle can only carry 1.

8300 blood, died from a SINGLE zombie hit.
ActionManZlt replied to herd's topic in New Player Discussion
The OP didn't die from these bugs -- he admitted that he got attacked by a zombie that run up on his flank after pissing off the horde.Yeah, if he got hit through a wall and lost his character, it would be unfair, but none of the rules of the game were broken in this case. He didn't see a zed running at him, and it got a lucky swipe at his head. This is just a QQ thread (esp with the screenshot crying about whatever transient loot he had), not a bug report thread. Lastly, even though this guy died through fair circumstances that he should have avoided, he still could've survived if he was part of a group, which shows one positive from this mechanic: having a survivor to watch your back can save your life in situations that would otherwise mean certain death, which is good thing. -
Running Through the forrest...
ActionManZlt replied to flappjackin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No, you defend yourself. In an older version, you would end up being put in a bandit costume... but this doesn't happen any more. -

Running Through the forrest...

This is why the bandit skin was removed -- killing in self-defence is considered murder, so good players would end up being branded as bandits after they'd been attacked a few times. -

My personal opinion: YES! This is one of the best game's I've played in years. ...but, it depends what kind of games you like. Do you like role-playing (the concept, not the RPG genre of video games)? Have you played a perma-death game before? Or a mil-sim? Or a survival game? Did you enjoy them? Are you patient? If the 10-second spawn timer in COD makes you agitated, then you will not enjoy this. You can often go for 20 minutes without anything happening at all, except holding down your 'W' key. Have you played games with steep learning-curves before? Where you die 20 times on the first level, but persist anyway until you figure it out? Do you have friends you could play with? The game is a lot easier and more rewarding (IMHO) when you've got people to team up with. I already owned Arma2:CO before DayZ came out, but since then, I've bought 2 more copies to give to my brother and a friend, because this is a game you've got to experience if you consider yourself an old-school PC gamer. Also, N.B. this is an alpha version of the game. It's very buggy, and it's entierly likely that after playing a character for 10 hours, they will be killed by a bug. If you get too attached to your virtual collectables (e.g. you unleash a nerd-rage and smash your monitor when you lose your save-games to a hard-drive failure), then you're going to end up being butthurt by this game. It's a very brutal, unforgiving game. There's lots of people on here who don't like it, or even complain that it's unplayable (lol), so it's obviously not everyone's cup of tea... But for me, it's fantastic. P.S. When you buy Arma2:CO, you're actually getting the full Arma2 original game (with single/coop campaign) and the Arma2:AO game (with it's campaign), which is great value for $30 if you like mil-sim games. There's also lots of other mods/missions/addons besides DayZ. If you're buying it just to play DayZ, then you're also getting these two other great games for free ;)

[Questionable] New military grade spawn area?

I would, sure, if this was a private server or just a few guys having fun, but it's not. It's griefing scattered with glitter to look like fun. Here again, I'm sure it's funny in any other setting, but when we're trying to fight abuse like this? It's not funny in the least. This only further reinforces the stereotype that bandits ruin DayZ, not because they are bandits, but because they just farm kills like every other FPS. For me, the thing that makes DayZ a masterpiece is that it's a game about griefers -- they're just as important of an element to the game as the zombies are. Knowing that there are lunatics out there who want to put an axe in your brain for no rational reason at all is a core element in this game -- if you removed that (e.g. FF=off / PvE only) then it would completely destroy the depth and fear of human interactions/emotions achieved. This isn't abuse of the game, it's just more role-play. These guys want to role-play axe-wielding maniacs, that's their choice, and the game is better for all of us as a result. To deny an entire half of the role-playing sphere of characters (i.e. chaos/evil inspired characters) would be a complete abuse and perversion of the masterpiece of a game. P.S. No, I'm not a "shoot on sight" type bandit. Have you see the film "The Road"? I play the game more like that -- scared as shit of any other human that's survived, because they're likely either crazy or desperate or both. Best to keep your distance and watch someone for a long time before thinking about approaching them, unless you really have to. And yes, if my character was killed in Cherno by a crazed lumberjack, that would be fun for me. First, it would be my fault for being in Cherno at night and not being extremely on-edge for murderers (it's a known bandit hot-spot), and second, that's a great way to conclude my character's story -- it beats all my other characters' stories, who simply got eaten by the horde, or shot by a sniper while cooking, or stabbed in the back for beans. This is a game about role-playing apocalypse survivors and living their (short) stories. Pretty sure every apocalypse movie has it's fair share of crazy people as well as the few heros.

You got 12 hours of gameplay from a free mod... and what's your point? You think you're wasting your time by playing video games? Get another hobby then. You don't like that your character died? That's the whole point of the game -- to roll-play a zombie survivor. Everyone's roll-play eventually ends with their character dying (usually quite abruptly), and then starts roll-playing a new character -- That's the game! You don't like the game (keep in mind that bandits/murderers/griefers are an integral part of this game)? Spawn a new character and keep playing if you like the game, or stop wasting your time on an activity that you don't enjoy if you don't like it.
