Searching realistic survival focused dayz-mod
h3l1x replied to timedance's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh rly? New gear UI, weapon quickswitch, new jump animation, unbinding of 1-9 F1-F12 keys, camo nets, crafting, fishing, traps, you can read the rest by yourself. ah, too late :P -
It's been suggested a year ago as I found out after searching. Thought I'd bump it up a bit. I think these vehicles should definately be included in a post soviet eastern Europe country, not only included but also be more common than let's say ATVs. Google Ural sidecar and you'll get plenty of nice pics. Just putting one here for example. There could be some variations with different specs and colors, a camo/military one (off road tires), and a couple of different color urban ones (normal tires, not good for off road driving). I think it would be fun riding in one of these, especially when sitting in the sidecar, and being able to freelook without having car roofs etc blocking your view. It would also be really sweet if the person sitting in the sidecar was able to shoot his weapon. Maybe there is a way implementing it in the mod (if they actually bother to include said bikes) by making the guy sitting in the sidecar not in the usual sitting position, but in a crouched position, not being able to change position, jump, or walk. He should only be able to turn a bit to the sides, let's say 30-45° to each side. It shouldn't be aesthetically bad since the player would be hidden by the sidecar from waist down. If this is even possible, then the person sitting in the sidecar would be able to equip a firearm and shoot straight and a bit to the sides. And as for balance, he'd be extremely vulnerable to zeds (and hostile players), since all his upper torso would be completely exposed, and shooting a gun -combined with the engine's noise- would attract many of them. Also by using this approach, the passenger is going to be able to hold many things except a gun. He could be holding a flashlight if its dark (or to make signals to someone far away), a glowstick, a flare, anything that can be equipped. A very (very) rough illustration of what I mean. Used this ural and this crouching model. I didn't crop his feet, they're hidden inside the sidecar, also tried to keep a realistic scale. Seems to me this could actually work. Feel free to share thoughts and ideas, but also try to keep the thread clean please. Below this line I'm adding every single idea that gets posted so one can skip reading the whole thread, and also to avoid duplicate suggestions. BigMike - Can also use sidecar for extra (they already have a small boot at the back) storage space when no passenger present. KoS - Attaching somehow blades (machetes) to wheels' axles and make a modern era scythed chariot in order to cripple (or kill) closeby enemies. Personally I find it a bit over the edge, not to mention that said blades would expand the width of the vehicle, should break away when in contact with any other object than flesh, etc. And you'd need a welding gun to make something like that sturdy enough in order to cut through whole legs, duct tape won't do it. Also methinks it messes up balance. You already have a vehicle with a shooter onboard, adding also blades would overpower it.

Sidecar motorcycles (old russian ones, nothing fancy)
h3l1x replied to h3l1x's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Didn't you read the whole post? The passenger in this system is going to be able to equip/use/hold/throw anything. He will behave as if he's normally crouched. You can do all of these things if you're crouched. :P -

Also, GAZ is not what you'd call a 2013 car, is it? Or any other vehicle ingame except the SUV which got removed (see the pattern?). Chernarus is supposed to be a gloomy post soviet European country, not a wealthy west world country. IMO this kind of vehicle matches perfectly the atmosphere. And yes, they are not used anymore by the army (not this kind of model at least), but as in every eastern European country, old army vehicles usually find their way to civilians' hands because they are made to last for many years. So while you wouldn't find any in a military camp, you would find them in farms for example. Much cheaper to get a rugged army vehicle second hand than buying a brand new ATV which you probably wouldn't be able to find in a store in Chernarus. Well, after some research, it seems they are still being used by the army. -
Download Dayz Commander, install it, use it to update arma, dayz etc, then go to server search, check hide unofficial, check hide wrong arma/dayz version, check every other filter you want (third person, crosshairs, nameplates, day/night, etc) pick a public hive server with good ping and players, get in and play.

Get it. Next patch is going to make you drool over it.

oh well, here we go again. "TPV trumps FPV". Do you even know it's not a contest? I won't keep repeating myself, many players (including me) are using both views on different occasions. Not quoting anyone? Remember that when we get to next paragraph, at the "hurr durr" part. So FPV and TPV have the same exactly FOV huh? But we bad people have to trump (again trumping? wtf) it out and need to be put back in our place. Well sorry, but you leave me no other choice. Oh look, the "hurr durr" part. Not quoting anyone, lol. Survival games? No you didn't. Minecraft is purely a constructing digital-lego game. This is it's core, it's nature. Now if they added dinosaurs, ghosts or pirates just to enhance it, that doesn't make it a similar game to dayz. Also, Dayz is supposed to be a survival simulator, not a FPS. Get your facts straight. It's a new kind of game, don't try to define it comparing it to cod, minecraft and whatelse. Ah this gets interesting. A video dated 10 april 2012 with no TPV. Also lacking almost anything it has now, just a reskinned arma II with zeds. In other words a test build of a one man's project. Also in case you don't know it, third person view and crosshairs are server options (and always were). Meaning that at this time there were only a couple of servers (UO probably) and it just happened they didn't have TPV and crosshairs. I can find you a video dated 25 april with TPV. Are we really debating on 15 days? I mentioned rifles and precision shooting. You seam to discard everything I say that doesn't suit your opinions. And yes, precision shooting works much better with one eye closed because you don't have the distraction of the depth. As to who is the CoD kiddie let those reading this thread to decide. For sure I'm not the one insisting Dayz is a FPS neither I start a crusade to start striping off parts of it in order to turn it into one. Reverse psychology time. I said two things actually. First that TPV simply cannot be discarded because of all the problems the mod has, and then I also said that it is also a feature many people prefer to use, or use alongside with FPV. I said both these things, you can check again. I made two points, one doesn't discard the other. The first was an answer to your kind of logic. The other to people not so fanatic about the whole subject. Get it now? You know what? By raging so much over this particular thing you seem like a person who only cares about PVP and takes Dayz for another FPS. Dayz is not all about PVP, and it's not your conventional FPS. And no, you don't know if the fix (or fixes) will be shitty, because you are not a dev, and you haven't experienced them. So stop trying to predict the future, suck it up and wait at least to try out the SA before you start again demanding the removal of other parts. What I really don't get though is why you have to have TPV removed and you wouldn't be happy if there were servers (as there are for the mod) for both FOVs. You would play on your server, they would play on their server. And don't dare using the "everyone plays on TPV servers, so all FPV ones are empty" excuse, cause according to the posts Soulhunter spams every single hour there is a whole army of hardcore FPV lovers, in fact it's the vast majority of Dayz's users. So many people, yet no servers at all? How can that be? Or is it just an "I have to impose what I like on all other people" attitude? Or just the bandwagon effect? Feeling as if you have a higher purpose and stuff.

LOL, thanks for proving my point about the mentality I mentioned. Two can play this game.

Since these threads spawn like mushrooms lately on the forums, I'll try to point out some things some people seem to ignore. In order to understand this post please leave out of this the FPV vs TPV mentality. First of all, to those who complain about TPV not being realistic. Well, in real life one person can cover almost 180 degrees with his two eyes without turning his head. And then peripheral vision comes to play, where it's easier to spot movements with the corner of your eye than by staring directly at the moving object. FPV does not allow this. The space it covers is almost half of what we get in real life, no peripheral vision also. Bottomline, neither view is realistic. The reason FPV works in most first person shooters is that when playing such a game you usually have to worry only for one thing. Enemy players. You don't have to take into account both PVP and PVE. Situational/spatial awareness is a fundamental aspect of a PVE game. And first person view doesn't cut it, simple as that. Yes, even with freelook. Because that takes time and a key press to use, and while using it you can't make your character turn. Not to mention that especially in the mod with the clunky moves, the multiple bugs, the buggy zeds and all the other far from perfect things, third person view is required at one point or another. Never mind about PVP. Just for these reasons. To all those complaining about others exploiting TPV. Well not much to say, obviously this needs to be fixed, and I'm sure in time it will be fixed. To those claiming TPV is noobish and "easy mode". Well, just answer me this. Do you play on servers with crosshairs? If so, please do not post in one of these threads again. We are playing a survival simulator, based on a milsim, with extremely detailed weapons/scopes/sights and you are still using crosshairs to hipfire your DMR at close range combat. IMO the first thing that needs to get ditched from this game, both mod and SA are the crosshairs. It's much more realistic shooting through the sights in TPV than using crosshairs in FPV. As far as SA goes, I find it a bit silly starting polls and debates whether something needs to be removed from it before you even get your hands on it (unless it's something as obvious as crosshairs). Maybe it works differently in the SA, maybe it's fixed/limited in some way. They're still thinking about it as far as I know. Making a gazillion threads of "FPV vs TPV" on the forums is not going to help. They only thing you are accomplishing is to make the forums a more messed up place than it's already is. Try to think about the people using the search function. Point is, have some patience, play the SA, experience the new game, new engine, new animations, new zeds, new everything and then - and only then- start complaining about something. TLDR - Keep the forums clean and organized, have patience, stop bashing on TPV and players using it, and get out of this FPV vs TPV mentality. For a change try the "what is feasible under the engine we've got, realistic, fun" mentality.

I bet you're trying to join either locked/whitelisted or servers running other dayz/arma II versions. Do yourself a favor and download and start using Dayz Commander. Much easier to filter servers, much easier to update game.
-
Ah, this thread debate again. Groundhog day ftw.
-
No. You can't combine l4d run and spray playstyle with arma. Fighting zeds all night long? With so scarce ammo? You'll end up tossing empty whiskey bottles and tin cans in a couple of minutes. Not to mention the server load of these hundreds of zeds you're talking about. Instacrash for server/client. Also werewolf/vampire zeds getting buffed during night? Again no, not to mention they're supposed to be infected human beings, not evil spawns of hell. Bosses? For the love of god no, it's not a mmorpg, it's a survival simulator. As for wild animals possing a threat to the player, wolves, vultures, bears, wild boars, deers, etc have been suggested already plenty of times.

idea for stop cars or make slow and kill tyres
h3l1x replied to wild_man's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I thought about that too, the hammer part, but there are problems with it. For starters, all the tool slots in the mod are used, so adding another tool, eg hammer would mean removing an existing one and you can't since all are useful. So no tool slot for hammer. Also, we already have a toolbox which obviously has a hammer inside since it's one of the most used tools. And don't forget that a hammer can be substituted easily with a flat rock, or a brick, or anything solid and heavy. Maybe we should start thinking ways of adding more tool slots in the mod. -
It all depends on your budget really.

idea for stop cars or make slow and kill tyres
h3l1x replied to wild_man's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I just want to add that balancing this feature is very important. Expect as soon as something like this gets implemented everyone on every single server placing traps on every road they come across and camping there till a vehicle comes. And this is the reason I don't like the idea of using barbed wire or tactical "chains" with spikes like KoS suggested. These things would cover the entire width of the road, thus not giving the chance to the driver to spot them and try an evading maneuver. The only way to avoid said traps would be to drive off the road. Just take into consideration that fully repairing a vehicle (especially by one person and not a team) takes several hours and trips around the map. So I believe taking out tires should be an option, but not an easy task. And it should not have a guaranteed result, eg "I'm placing a trap here and I'm sure any vehicle that comes along will get flat tires". There should always be a failchance. By using planks you ensure that a player can't cover the entire width of the road with just one item. Let's say it takes 4 planks to do that. And that each plank takes up 4 slots and when combined with nails it takes up ever more, say 5. So even with an emtpy inventory one can only carry 2 planks with nails simultaneously. And give them the same properties/behavior as rifles when it comes to backpacks. So one can't carry easily a bunch of them at the same time. Make planks kinda rare or maybe only found in barns, reduce the ammount of nails, and there you go, it seems balanced. -
Well guys, it's not as bad as you describe it methinks. Yes, he does need a discrete gpu but as far as cpu and ram well it can work. I'm playing on a e8500 (dual core 3.16 ghz) with 4gb of ram, but since I'm on 32bit xp it sees only like 3.2 gb. And I can play fine on medium/high settings. So if he gets a gpu I think he will be able to play on low/medium settings.

idea for stop cars or make slow and kill tyres
h3l1x replied to wild_man's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Mod already have nails as loot. Crafting is going to be implemented on next patch. So why go with tactical gear and not plain diy traps? 1) Throw nails in the middle of the road. 5-10% chance to deflate tires. 2) Wooden plank + nails = plank with upside nails. Throw it in the middle of the road. 50-60% chance to deflate tires. Also said traps would be destroyed after being run over by one vehicle for balancing reasons. -
loled hard. get some beans.

If I may add something, you don't have to spend $30 on ARMA 2:CO. You can just keep an eye out for sales on at least 4-5 different game selling websites and save some cash. Personally I got it for $12.45 from gog.com a couple of months ago. You can use isthereanydeal.com for finding said sales easily without having to check each gamestore daily.

* [REMOVED] - Removed ArmA 2 squad command menu (0-9 or F1-F12) R4z0r, I think I'm falling in love with you (and all the other devs involved). I'm speechless.Seriously keep it up.

A A List Of Buildings That Would Be Fun To See In Chernarus
h3l1x replied to carbine781 (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
1) A circus. Big colorful tents, strange loot, animal cages, trailers, the whole bunch. Maybe some dangerous really hungry escaped animals? Say a lion or tiger. Also vehicles, big old trucks, maybe a caravan, power generators. 2) A zoo. Can use cages as temporary safehouses, infected can't enter. Can also lock a player in a cage. Same as above for escaped animals. Companion wild dog source maybe? 2) Childrens' playgrounds, for that eerie feeling. And also for when (if) infected children are implemented. 3) Post office. Getting a chance to read people's mail at the break of the infection (being in russian would be a problem though, needs some thought). Immersion. Also vehicles, small trucks, bikes, etc. 4) Museum. Looted semi destroyed/vandalized. Paintings, old stuff, with captions next to them (language barrier again as above) informing the player about Chernarus and it's history. More immersion. 5) Factory. Already present, but not enterable. Automotive, gaz production line for example. Much loot for repairing vehicles, but also small tight spaces, low visibility (heavy machinery, pipes, debris), no light source (flashlight mandatory), kind of a maze to get in/out. Also power generators. 6) An old cinema or a plain theatre. Maybe you can repair the projector machine in the cinema (would also need a power generator), and play a couple of minutes fragment of an old russian movie on the screen. -
Forgot to mention the magical crosshairs. Or didn't you?
-
This surely needs to be implemented, along with spray painting on trees/walls/floors/windows/vehicles. Yes, in the beggining lots of people will just have fun with it, penises and all, but after the "omg new feature to play with" period I think it'll work fine. Just imagine the possibilities. Placing strange marks to follow to your camp, or to lure players in an ambush, warning signs/messages, defacing road signs in order to disorient players, role playing, suicide notes (immersion ftw), so many options.

You sir are part of the cancer killing this mod. Offering extra gear to whoever joins your server first. Not to mention all the other "features". Please go away and stay away. Kimuri, I'm in the same boat as you. Yesterday I found DE 1108 and to my surprise it's really nice. But, it's a private hive (although reported in dayz commander as an official server). Nonetheless I played for a couple of hours, I usually had 60fps and finally a vanilla server with no crosshairs. I really enjoyed it. Now, some people are going to show up in this thread saying the only serious hardcore server setup is FPV only, please for the love of god don't turn this thread into a clone of all the others you are spawning around the forums lately (eg 1st person view vs 3rd person view). I'm in no way affliated with any server, don't own one, don't have a favorite one. I'm just looking for a EU based, pure vanilla public hive server, running always the latest version of arma 2/dayz mod, no crosshairs, no nameplates, no sidechat, no waypoints (obviously), with a custom antihack if possible and good fps. If anyone knows of one offering all these things then please share.
