    Lone wolf tips?

OP says he wants tips to play lone wolf style. Most replies are "shoot everyone you see". Isn't that a bandit's approach? There's a difference people between a lone wolf and a bandit. I'm not saying it's all rainbows and roses, obviously you're gonna get betrayed by players pretending to be friendly and then shooting you in the back, but still, lone wolf =/= bandit. Anyhow, some tips. Gear: Get at least an alice pack, matches, hunting knife, hatchet. Pack as many water canteens as you can. Always keep an empty tin can with you in order to boil it and avoid infection. Food is easy to find, looting villages and hunting, water is more scarce. Also carry at least 4 bandages and 2 morphine injectors. Breaking a leg in the middle of nowhere is the worst thing that can happen to you. Antibiotics are worth their weight in gold. Movement: Always stay in the treeline, plan your routes, use the map, do quick in and outs when looting, use freelook when running across fields, always use cover. Scout areas you're about to enter with binoculars, looking for players, zombies chasing players, etc. Player interaction: I've come across hostile survivors and friendly bandits. Don't judge players by their skin. Always use direct voice chat. Don't turn your back even on friendly players till you get to spend a couple of hours with them and get to know em. It's always a risk, sometimes it ends up with a nasty betrayal, other times with a helpful encounter. Looting: Head up north, check barracks, firehouses, hangars, military tents. Look for bases/tents near ponds/lakes and across the map's borders. Don't spend much time near said camps, in and out quickly.

    Vetrenarian offices

As a matter of fact you can find lots of human targetedmedicine in vet supplies. IVs, penicillin, a very wide range of antibiotics, cortizone, glucose/dextrose, surgery supplies, vitamins, bandages, stiches, you name it. Many vets use drugs for humans on domestic animals cause sometimes they work better than the equivalent animal "version".
  3. Just wanted to add that more optimizations are on the way (eg next patch) along with some very intersting changes. Also if you were away for a long time, you'd better use the search feature and look up infection (by zombies, or not boiled water/raw meat), viral zombies, the lack of antibiotics, and all the big changes you missed. On a sidenote, all hail discordia. Now, where's my golden apple?
  4. Use the search function next time. This topic has been discussed lots of times and every single time most people were against it. I've only killed one person in a few months (eg not playing a bandit, not kos, trying to be friendly etc) and still I don't like this idea. Dayz is supposed to be free and open. And bandits are necessary even if you/I/someone don't like them.
  5. Yes but think about this situation. I'm playing my character, which last time I logged off was at the forest south to berezino. So I log in without being a freshspawn, I have an encounter at berezino with lets say a hostile player, I die. Then I am able to choose the berezino spawn point as a new spawn (and take revenge, loot my corpse), since (I guess) the spawn limit only applies to new spawns. So it's still exploitable, it's just not exploitable for new spawns. If I have misunderstood something please correct me. I can almost visualize a new playing pattern. You spawn at spawn point A, move to spawn point B, play completely recklessly (thus defeating dayz purpose/goal) die, select spawn point B as new spawn, spawn, loot corpse/take revenge, move to spawn point C, die there too, select spawn point C, and it goes on like this. This way you'll always be able to spawn instantly to the place you died. In a few words, it's still exploitable for already spawned players logged off somewhere. If they die close to one of the spawn points they can instantly get back to their corpse. And through the above playing pattern its also exploitable for newspawns (just involves moving from one spawn point to another). Oh and also expect this system to nerf infection bigtime. Every single player once infected will just run near a spawn point, find a secluded place, commit suicide via zombies, choose said spawn point as a new spawn point, and wham, in one minute, next to their corpse, all their gear, no infection.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.7.1 Hotfix

I'm also not a programmer but even if it's not possible through an external (eg not tampering with the original arma2 exe) way, it's still considered modding, just with a bit of reverse engineering . And even if this way comes to a dead end, we could just make a formal poll on this forum, get the results and forward it to BIS. I'm pretty sure it's not such a big deal for them, releasing the same patch we already use, with a couple of nops where the exe gets the function keys' registers. It's more like if they want to do it or not.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.7.1 Hotfix

Sounds good, let's see if it will also work as intended. Keep it up r4z0r. Also, one question/suggestion. I know this is not the proper place to post but since you've been active here recently here we go. As fas as I know all function keys (F1-F12) are hardcoded into arma2 and therefore one can't use them for anything without triggering that annoying squad command menu ingame. So I wonder, is there any chance that you devs can do something about it? A small patch let's say disabling this function. Being able to use said keys for custom controls or external apps (ts, fraps, media players, etc) would be great.
  8. Run DayZ Commander, go at top bar where it says install/update, click that, a new frame will open, check both arma and dayz so they're the latest versions, then go back to server filtering and check "Hide Wrong Arma2 Version" and "Hide Wrong Mod Version". Pick a server and play.

    Death by concrete!

I'll just leave this here. Along with this.
  10. 1) No need for namecalling, instead of posting above useless post you could just have edited the previous post of yours in which you have your answer embedded in redmabtab's quote and all would be fine. 2) You are still wrong on the subject of antibiotics. Prior to 1.7.7 patch they were more common and would spawn at crash sites, medical tents, hospitals, military spawns. Checking one of these would almost certainly provide you with a couple of boxes. After 1.7.7 patch they are extremely rare but they spawn almost anywhere. The fact that they spawn anywhere makes it even harder to find them, since it requires you to check every single lootpile in every village/town. When they were more common and spawned only in 4 specific lootpiles it was much easier and less time consuming to find a couple of boxes. Bottomline, saying antibiotics are more common than pre 1.7.7 patch is completely false. If you can't take my word on it just check the hundreds of posts complaining about the lack of antibiotics or check this. 3) If you don't play the vanilla mod then you should be cautious before offering advice on others. No advice is better than misleading/false advice. This is a forum, what you post stays here, and people using the search feature will read said posts and take what they read for granted.

    ARMA 2 OA StOPPED WORKING

My game used to crash with the same error every 20-30 minutes. It was like if it had an inner crash timer. As soon as I completely disabled shadows it stopped doing that and can now play for hours without a single crash. You can try testing that.

The Server Count is Too Damn High!

OP is right on his observations, though I think most users/players are after the same features more or less. It's not a matter of different directions but more of a features/polishing race. For example, why do most people play DayZero? Cause of the optimization that (as I've heard)is much more pc friendly and gives more fps/less stuttering to the end user. If the vanilla mod had this kind of optimization then there wouldn't be a need for DayZero. Also some extra features, such as vehicle towing, or vehicle lift with a heli (talking about a balanced system, can't lift a ural with a little bird obviously), part scavenging from vehicles, fuel siphoning from vehicles and some kind of base/stash building (big discussion, won't elaborate, you get my point though) are the main reasons people prefer one mod over the vanilla one. Features as spawning with an as50 and 5 antibiotics in an alice pack, or AI bases with high end gear, aliens and unicorns are out of the question (for me at least). So my point is, if the vanilla mod had all the above in a thoughful and balanced way there would be no need for the other 50 mods and the community wouldn't be as fragmented as is it now. But in order for this to happen, the vanilla mod needs support, both from the community and from the SA team. Community needs to get more organized (some kind of new features forum section, dedicated to this, strictly no offtopic allowed, no memes, no thread derailing, just feedback, brainstorming and more polls) and SA team needs to be there for the mod. Can't have months passing waiting for the approval of a new patch and litterally having the mod's devs chasing the SA team for a reply. This is just wrong. If it keeps working this way, expect the vanilla mod to fall behind the other mods much more than it already has. And this is the opinion of a person that has only played the vanilla mod and will keep doing so (looking forward to 1.7.7.2).

    DayZ Mod 1.7.7.1 Hotfix

First of all nice to see the rolling changelog updated. Now I see some things that trouble me. And these are, the new spawn point at berezino and the spawn selection feature. Berezino being in the north and far away from spawnpoints, used to be some sort of ghost town, of a distant haven with a super market, a hospital, offices, low player encounter, usually just lone wolves roaming the north. Now with these two new features I can already visualize clans spawning all together at berezino (and not only this place, every major city with supplies) taking down said lone wolves and north roamers. What I'm saying is that this new system may seem as it promotes coop (you can spawn next to your friends without losing half an hour running across the map to find them) but it also makes it much easier for groups of people to dominate every single big town (aka the map) against the lone players. I think this is a wrong approach to promote coop, there should be places that are hard and take time to get to, rewarding you with a feeling of safety and low player encounters. What's next? NWAF spanws? We already have the hot zone at the south, turning the northeast into a similar hot zone doesn't seem to me as a nice idea. Especially when being able to select where you will spawn. This feature may save us some time, but also makes it much more safe and easy to let's say get back to that guy that killed you and take revenge, or loot your corpse. The only positive thing I see about the Berezino spawnpoint is the fact that all people who have bases at the north will start feeling less confident about their bases'/camps'/tents' positions, thus bringing some balance back between newspawns and hoarders. But still, having squads of five or more people, using teamspeak (almost everyone uses it), spawn at a single spawn on demand seems to me like a game breaker. Takes away all the "shit i'm alone, I need to do something" feeling and just turns the game to a casual fps. Log on, do some shooting with your buddies, log off. Also expect massive "teleporting" incidents. Example, I'm at Kamenka, and suddenly one of my buddies on teamspeak tells me there was a firefight at Berezino with multiple casualties. I commit suicide (just have some zeds eat me) and then select to spawn at Berezino. Wham, I spawn there, 4 corpses to loot and gear up. Then log off, log on again, spawn back at Kamenka and go on my way to NWAF. Second example, I'm in a firefight with another guy in X (spawn enabled) town. Said guy is on his teamspeak, informs his buddies he needs help and in a couple of minutes instead of 1 vs 1 I'm in a 5 vs 1 situation and got hostiles spawning around me. Teleporting (through spawn choosing) from one end of the map to the other is a feature that should never be added to a game of this nature. Achievements of any kind should take time and trying. Going from point A to point B should take us time and require caution/food/drinks along the way. I'm not bashing on the idea, just stating my (BIG) fears. Could use some more info on that, how it's supposed to work, also what limitations we're talking about. Is it a server option? (most servers will allow it since that'll get them more players and that's the only thing that matters to most server admins).
  14. Was in a firehouse, I've just found a corpse under the stairs and was checking it out. Suddenly I started taking fire from behind. I turned around and there was this survivor, kneeled 10 meters away, shooting me with his makarov, no reason whatsoever. I didn't have a pistol or rifle, just a hatchet. I run towards him like a madman and started hitting him on the head with the hatchet. Luckily his magazine got empty as I approached him and I took him down. That was my first, and only kill. Been playing for a couple of months.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.7.1 Hotfix

Can't someone else review it? I mean Matt or any other Matt could be away for vacations for like 2 months. Can't someone else fill in his place? Many people are looking forward to the new gear ui , the weapon quickswitch and the optimizations. Waiting an extra month just cause someone is not doing his job seems kinda wrong. I thought the mod was supposed to be community driven. Also it's over a month already.
  16. Comparing your face to a boar's face is completely false. Also "I find it hard to believe..." is not an argument. Do a search for boar slugs, see how massive they are, the expanding/rotational technologies they use, the air pockets etc and then compare that to a 9mm bullet. Might as well google for a wild boar pic, as you seem to not know exactly what we're talking about, these things are beasts, not piggies.
  17. They're no chickens man. They won't even take a scratch from a 9mm handgun. Just read the following.
  18. Very bad idea, waste of resources, reminds me of l4d2. Also highly exploitable as a group of bandits could have one guy playing as a crow, scouting a whole area and reporting players' moves to this team via teamspeak. Completely agree with Salamander (not the first time). Also wild boars should be hard as hell to take down, in real life they're really tough and aggressive, especially if they feel threatened. Now it's like they're burgers on feet. They should charge you and also need some > caliber to go down. For example, taking down a boar with a hatchet, or a 9mm weapon is just not feasible. They got very thick skin and can endure small caliber ammo easily. Generally wild animals should be hard to take down as is in real life. Also, for the love of god, some mod or OP change "here" to "hear" in the title.
  19. Quite simple actually. Take a player and let him play the same area in dayz on two systems. One high end with like constant 60 fps (and max settings) and an old system barely running dayz getting 20 fps. Now try to throw some pvp into the experiment, also try it in a town (fps drop, lag). Compare the results, and ask him which run felt easier. As long as you have a hatchet, doesn't matter if there are 10 spawned zombies or 30, it's the same thing actually since you'll get them in line at a building and start taking them down one by one. Going to zelengorsk and shooting an M4 like a madman attracting every zombie in the area isn't the brighest thing to do, neither the purpose of the game, so you can't use it as proof that this system is wrong. Also take into consideration that you were 2 people, not 1 (zombies x 2). Playing on high fps and high settings is much easier than struggling with >30 fps with constant screen tearing, desync, etc. This system is not supposed to punish people with expensive rigs, but give a chance to people with lower end rigs. If all people got few zombies, it'd be easier for people with high end pcs, if all people got many zombies it'd be harder for people with old pcs. Don't forget that zombies are supposed to be the real threat in this game. So the more zombies the better. Complaining about this seems a bit silly. Just learn to use the hatchet and conserve your ammo. False. Infected and loot spawns are relative to fps. Check here and here (search for dynamic).
  20. Outlaw1198 first of all lrn2quote.Also, more common antibiotics? With so many complaining they can't find one and dying of infection? They are not more common as far as I know, they are just spawning randomly almost everywhere instead of hospitals/medic tents etc.
  21. h3l1x

Scavenger animals. Also some infection stuff.

Oh rly? Also, consuming said animals should have a high chance of infection (not the zombie one, a generic bacterial infection) since they feed mainly on corpses.
  22. Doesn't work this way. There are two different versions of the game, The steam (or steamworks if you like) and the steamless one. You obviously bought the steam version, so trying to run it without running steam prior to this results to an error. Maybe you should have done your homework before buying it from steam if you intented to buy a steamless version. I don't use steam (bought a steamless version of ARMA 2: CO from gog.com) so I could be wrong, although doubt it. Bottom line, if you don't want to run steam in order to run a game, then don't buy said game from steam, and if you buy it from another store make sure it doesn't say steamworks.

A few suggestions for the mod - for once.

In this post there is a fire making layout (matches, tools) taking into consideration the mod's limitations and inventory ui (as far as I understand it). Maybe we should start a fire thread so it's all in one place.
  24. h3l1x

A few suggestions for the mod - for once.

Second idea has also been discussed here a couple of days ago. Also same system (flares, glowsticks) should be applied to matches, not just medicine/pill boxes.

Playing dayz on a mac HELP PLEASE

What husky said. DayZ is already horribly opitimized, very cpu/gpu intensive etc even for high end systems running vanilla windows. And you are trying to play it on a mac (different architecture), on OS X (different drivers), in a virtual environment (lag, limited resources)? Not a big surprise it refuses to work. Even if it did start, I'd expect a shitstorm of problems. Go back to bootcamp until you can gather some money to build a desktop for gaming.
