watching videos online is a great way to get familiar with strategies for engaging in combat with other players, but that's really about it. And even after watching quite a bit of Shosho, PsiSyndicate, JackFrags, and Frankie, I still sucked at aiming down the iron sights of pretty much every gun... There is no substitute for time in-game... -
If I was the type to hold my breath, Rocket would've done me in a long time ago... :) I think you've got a solid plan at the moment. Always take it slow. Rushing get's you nowhere in this game unless you're trying to make it back to your corpse before server restart...

official public servers have been pretty clean too. I've put in about 15 hours on official vanilla servers in the past couple of weeks without doing the gangnam style or being teleported in to a death-match even once. Its like... actually a playable game again... If I could manage to find some effing AB's

Partnering up with someone and trying to be a Hero has kept me hopelessly enamored with DayZ. There's an endless amount of frustration, from bandit survivors and glitchy game mechanics alike, but trying to be a good guy is hard as hell and keeps every interaction with another survivor as intense and exciting as possible. Get the basics to defend yourself and then focus on getting together enough supplies to go out and help people.

I've fired off .306 rounds before and there is no way in hell i could get the scope back on target anywhere near as quickly as in-game... I think you're correct that the amount of recoil after firing a shot is pretty close to reality, but because your line of sight through the scope is never broken its wayyy to easy to group a couple of shots on a target in less time than its takes for them to react. There is no way to really simulate how jarring it is to fire off a large caliber round, but moving the cross-hair further off target with every shot would be a step in the right direction.

DMR will not be added to the SA... I do like some of your suggestions to reducing the overpoweredness of the DMR, especially things like recoil and slower reload time... Hopefully they'll consider these for the mod.

Yeah, there are a lot of people still playing. The vanilla mod has gone through some changes and it's become a bit tougher, you can read through the other threads here to see what's changed. I mostly play the Origins Mod as a bandit whenever I'm alone and vanilla DayZ as a Hero whenever I'm playing with a partner. Alpha for the standalone should be released in a few weeks. -

They are essentially "rage infected" zombies and survivors have survived because we ARE immune. The infection system is not supposed to be a threat of turning us in to a zombie, its a threat of dying, the same way Necrotizing Fasciitis can kill IRL from just a scratch if it's not treated with anti-biotics. We are immune to the "rage infection" but zombies are walking petri dishes of infectious diseases. Also, the SA will have a system for sterilizing and cleaning wounds before things get out of hand as a way of preventing infection. I agree that zombies need to be more difficult and infection is a nice addition to the mod, but the next time I get aggro'd and hit through a friggin wall I'm going to put my fist through my monitor :) Cheers! -

General exasperated relief and beans all around! Some of the stuff on reddit was amusing and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but nothing helps the workday move quicker than the good ole' DayZ forums! :)

Seriously... Work was starting to be a drag. Also, reddit only sufficed in the same way nicotine gum suffices my craving for a cigarette... Just waiting for the first thread titled: "Sooo it's almost August, where the Hell is [sA]" :) Then the forums will OFFICIALLY be back online

Best gun for player hunting

A few weeks ago I was playing ARMA2 domination on a server which allowed me to take a DMR... I could nail any target from 999 meters down, but out of 100 shots that I took above 1000 meters, none of them seemed to hit. And at 900 meters you're pretty much at the bottom of the scope anyway... I don't know for sure that there is an "effective" range and everything beyond that just doesn't hit, but it sure felt like it after a few hours of sniping AI's I'm calling shenanigans on the 1500 meter claim (though wtf do I know). EDIT: assuming your claim was that it was a DMR... I think I've hit pretty damn close to 1500 with the AS50 I'll take a DMR over almost any zero-able sniper in the game. -
As someone who typically plays as a Hero (though not always), I just wanted to thank you all for being bandits. You are what keep me coming back to this game!

Are you trolling or joking or both? They have more ideas than they can possibly implement, and this is a realistic survival game that hinges on disease. Having to take time to piss and shit and having to vomit because you've gotten sick leaves you vulnerable and exposed. Those are brilliant mechanics because they are small changes that greatly increase the amount of planning and strategy you have to implement. If you honestly think they're running out of ideas, you haven't been paying attention.

great post. I've actually been readjusting my play style and practicing being stealthy a lot more the past few weeks... Right now, one of the tricks I often use if I have a zombie aggro'd on me is to vault over a low fence and force the zed to take the long way around while I try to find somewhere to hide... I get the feeling this will no longer work in the SA. Best to just keep them from aggroing in the first place, which is what I've been practicing -

Blasting off with any weapon is always dangerous... I play a very stealthy and careful play-style and still end up getting hit by zeds in the most ridiculous fashion...
