Why do some players do everything possible to avoid interaction?
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to mithrawndo's topic in General Discussion
It doesn't seem like a really great idea to demand an interaction from someone whom you are threatening. I don't see why would anyone have a reason to submit to a bandit in game only to be toyed with, humiliated and most likely killed anyway, is this a some kind of masochism some find enjoyable? -
I'd rather not bother investing lots of time going inland until there is an ability to make stashes, so you can save at least some of your progress. You're going to be killed eventually and loose everything, so personally I collect bare necessities only and a gun. I stay on the coast to jump straight into action to see how things turn out, occasionally going a bit inland if I'm short on some supplies. If you are a nice guy do what two previous posters above said.

While things happening in games are usually really not a big deal, I still bring my moral code of conduct even to virtual world. This is the kind of thing that I just can not disable, so I always try to act accordingly to what I consider is right. I don't do things that I consider bad simply because this causes aversion in me and I don't see any kind of fun in that. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of fps shooters, but I play not to just shoot people but rather to compete with them. I enjoy an equal competition where me and my opponents do our best do defeat each other and achieve our goal, similar to any kind of sport. In games like dayz, however, I see no point in shooting some guy who's just minding his own business without intentions of harming others. I find it fascinating how some say they like doing atrocities in games, but consider themselves good in real world. If you find this kind of things appealing, perhaps the only thing that stops you from embodying this in the real world are the consequences that you'll have to face. This is what I like the most in dayz: people making moral decisions in a world of no consequences

I'd look for sniper positions first, starting from the hill up north that has a clear view on most of structures on the west part of airfield. If you start approaching from the beach without looking there, you'll be at mercy of a sniper. Have a look at the treeline south of airstrip as well, they can overview everything but barracks from there.

I wouldn't shoot the guy in clown mask just because he has one, but what bothers me is why would anyone need to wear a silly creepy clown mask? If this kind of guy wants to show that he is a some kind of weirdo who is unpredictable than he surely succeeds. If I'd accidentally bump into you I'd take cover and say hi just like in any other such encounter. If I'd saw you on the coast I'd watch you to make sure you were not here to harass freshspawns. If I'd saw you on one of the infamous sniper positions I'd shoot without wavering. Generally all that this view tells me is that you've been to military bases and survived, that's it.

Why is pvp and gunfights so bad in stand alone?
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
While I've had some great fights in dayz before that I would've never head in any other shooter, most of my fights I don't find that fun in general. It's usually either an easy kill of my opponent or an unexpected "you are dead" black screen while I'm minding my own business. Or a tedious waiting game when we wait until one of us makes a move eventually. If I really want to compete with someone in fighting I usually go play some other game. -
Why KoS is the way to go in certain cases
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to liquidsnake's topic in General Discussion
Exactly What goes around comes around. The whole story kind of contradicts with your point, it looks like you ended up being dead because you decided to kill this guy. Probably would've ended much better if you decided to talk instead of picking the easy way. -
dont go to the shore (100 pop servers)
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to benri's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like a lot of fun actually! -
Mkay, somebody shot someone in game, big deal lol. Though I'm a bit confused who was a "pathetic specimen coward noob" in this story, probably somebody who executes defenceless players.

Do you treat players depending on what clothes they wear?
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to maninthewall's topic in General Discussion
Their clothing doesn't really say anything about their intentions, so no. I'm friendly, but just like anyone else I wouldn't like to be noticed until I announce my presence, so I look for camo clothing. I'm doing my best to defend myself and to fight with bandits so I look for better firearms too. There are some clothing items I dislike though, like clown masks. I find them silly and have no idea why a sane person would need to wear one. I wouldn't shoot a guy with a mask, but neither would turn my back to him. And to someone not wearing their pants too. -
Sometimes I feel like I'm playing a completely different game compared to what some other players say. Of course there are enough bandits, but I meet cool guys in game all the time. They are complete strangers to me yet we find enough guts not to shread each other into pieces and play together for a while. Not to mention how many times I just observed a player without attempting to attack him, I'm pretty sure things like that must've happened to myself pretty often too. Just make sure to be extremly careful all the time and not rush to some war zone right away, you'll sure have a high chance of meeting a hostile there. It's gonna be the same, I played some mods of dayz mod with base building. Survivors are still survivors, bandits are still bandits, just attacking someone's base for a difference.

This fight happened a long time ago in the mod. I don't remember if it was the first one ever for me, but certanly one of the first. This was the longest fight I've ever had. I played on map Fallujah, a very big one with lots of open spaces and a big city in the center. I was a fresh spawn, gathered some supplies and a shotgun with a bunch of bullets. Saw a helicopter crash site in the distance, but decided not to bother with it since I would be an easy target for sniper. As I walk around it I saw a player running towards it. I try to talk to him in global chat but get no response. Since he wasn't shot by a sniper I decide I go there too and see how things turn out. As I come close and see him dodging zombies I notice he has a bandit skin. Well, that means he's most likely hostile, so I kill him immediately. But that's not where the story ends. As I look around the crash site I see lots of dead bodies of survivors. There were some good guns, but unfortunately no ammo for them, and I could carry only one firearm. While I was deciding if it's better to have a shotgun with some ammo or fnfal with no clips, I hear zombies screaming and turn around. Guy with a same nametag who I had just killed spawned nearby and was full of vengeance, running with an axe recklessly towards me. I take a shot and miss this time, I try to shoot one more time and all I hear is "click, click". I've ran out of ammo! I had an axe, but unlike standalone the process of switching between melee and firearm was very long and involved putting my shotgun on the ground. With mad axeman shortening distance to me very fast I had no time for that so the only option was to retreat. So now I carry a shotgun with no bullets, there are zombies and bandit who wants revenge running after me. Not good. I decide it might be a good idea to bring more zombies to the scene, so I run towards what seemed to be outskirts of the city. Partially I succseeded, now there were like two dozens of zombies after us, however this guy still really insisted on killing me. This couldn't go on forever, because I would've starved to death first if I continued running away, since he was a "freshier" spawn than me. I decide to take a risk, turn 180 degrees and run towards him straight into the horde of zombies. He swings his axe and misses. I run inside the zombie crowd, dodjing them left and right, leaving unscratched. My enemy followed me right in to the zombie tail too, but he was not as successfull as me: I saw they bit him and he was bleeding. He continued to follow me, but now with a great disadvantage: he would pass out of blood loss eventually, it was a matter of time. He still, however, kept on not giving up trying to get to me. Eventually he realized this is not going to bring him anywhere, so he ran to the nearest house to bandage himself. The horde followed him. Zombies could only walk slowly in buildings, so I was sure he would patch himself up successfully. I use this time to drop my useless shotgun and switch to axe. I thought that zombies would occupy him for a long time and I could find some shells for my gun. However, he somehow managed to leave the building and was again going after me. Since he was bleeding for a while I knew I would get an upper hand in a fight. I decided to keep running to further to enhance my chances of winning the fight: I was the one who would choose where we fight. I kept running towards the city. I chose a narrow alleway where none of us could escape after we engage in a fight. I run around the corner and stop, ready to attack. As he comes to me we start swinging axes at each other violently. A few sconds later it was over. Finally my foe was lying beneath my feet. This was not the end, however. He got me good before he was defeated: I was very low on blood, my screen lost almost all colour, and to make matters worse I began to pass out randomly in a bandit and zombie infested city. I ate all the food he and I had to regenerate blood, but of course this was not enough. It was my first time on this map, so I was lost. I nearly died of starvation until I managed to find a grocery store. In the end I got enough food to regenerate my health, found a winchester and backpack good enough to continue my adventures.

Persistent Storage Thoughts
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to Golden Child's topic in General Discussion
Never did that myself, but I assume loot farming could be done regardless of tents nearby, they could just dump everything on the ground. -
Persistent Storage Thoughts
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to Golden Child's topic in General Discussion
It doesn't change gameplay that much, just adds one more thing to do before you accomplish everything in game. Rushing to a military base to grab a weapon to kill everything is no different than rushing to your tent for the same purpose. It's just a matter of player's attitude to game, not an existence or absence of storage items. As for stashes close to high value areas, I've seen lots of those in the mod, they were picked clean by other players quickly. -
Thermal sights. Yes or no?
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to ThatBritshGuy's topic in General Discussion
Definitely no, all attempts at being quite, careful and staying hidden will instantly become futile when some hostile with thermal appears. Also I find this phrase a bit funny: -
Existential Doubts
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to razgriz93@gmail.com's topic in General Discussion
The IRL situation is a tricky question. I guess it would be hypocritical to say that I'm 100% sure how I'm going to act when stakes are that high without ever experiencing such a situation. So instead I'd say is that I hope I stay strong to my morals. In game I do my best to survive and to ensure my own safety, but I just can't treat badly a guy that might be friendly, so I always try to figure out what person I am facing first. I don't like dying of course, have a little bit of fear for my character, but I always try to overcome it. -
Existential Doubts
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to razgriz93@gmail.com's topic in General Discussion
Would be interesting to see a poll there. I would act like that guy who spared you, since I would not have enough info whether you are hostile or not, though personally I don't think you deserved this kind of friendly treatment, no offence. If I knew about your previous murders I'd shoot without wavering, kinda missing humanity system of the mod. Take some courage and talk instead of shooting in panic. Once very long time ago back in the mod I was looting helicopter crash, saw a survivor nearby and killed him in fear that he'll shoot first, without trying to talk. Even though that is not a big deal killing someone in game, I felt so disgusted I decided to never shoot first unless I have some solid evidence that the person I meet is a bandit. Met a lot of cool guys ever since that I could've just shot on sight, had lots of fun playing together with them later. -
DayZ gets scary when you are playing at 3 AM.

Devil's castle is still where it should be as far as I know, I think you came across a new unnamed castle east of old fields, I've been there once. -
Tents and Camps and Goals / what I miss
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to normandy's topic in General Discussion
Gathering supplies in my base was something that put sense into all my adventures. Currently I don't see any reason to go north-west to gather supplies since I'm going to loose everything eventually. In standalone i'd rather grab some bare necessities and a weapon and move to a high traffic area right away to see how things turn out. However, even in the original mod that had tents and vehicles I stopped bothering with them. Tent placement rules were too restrictive so you couldn't hide them well and vehicles were impossible to conceal, especially from helicopters. So after a while your stash was looted, vehicles hijacked, destroyed or sabotaged. I decided that it's better not to have a stash at all than to do all the hard work for some thieves that were roaming probable stash areas. Then I tried Origins, then Epoch where I could finally hide my tents where I want them to and later have some more secure storage options. I'm looking forward for at least persistent objects to have no restrictions on placement. Ideally I wish there was a base building system with secure storage capabilities somewhat like in Epoch. -
I usually shoot armed players if they do not communicate too. I assume that if they have a gun and made it this far they should already know what buttons to push to talk, but refuse to because they prepare an attack on me. I type a few things through text chat in different languages if voice doesn't work, if that has no effect then I'm likely to open fire. But in this case I think shooting this guy was not the right decision. Once I saw player looting barracks in Balota, talked to him and typed in direct chat for like a minute, he just kept looting not noticing anything. I noticed he doesn't have a firearm, so I showed up and finally he paid attention to me. Turns out he was a nice guy, just couldn't hear me well and was careless enough not to pay attention to chat before he saw me. I gave him some rags he asked for and we went our separate ways. Something's not right with direct communication, sometimes people understand me just fine, sometimes they say they can barely hear me. Same thing happens to me when different players talk to me. And usually you have to stand right next to a person to be able to understand what he says. I'd type more than just "boo" in chat to try to get his attention. He either paid no attention to surroundings, didn't hear you and notice you typing, or actually saw you in tent but proceeded looting ignoring you. A lot of time I came across weirdos without firearms who just stared at me or ran past not being able to say a single word but not attacking me as well, so I just left them.

I appreciate your friendliness, but being a pacifist will get you nowhere. Don't hesitate to give a free ride to the coast to those who are hostile. You can be friendly and survive at the same time, just don't let the bad guys to abuse your friendly attitude. Also take cover and keep your distance while you talk, standing still doing nothing while they are preparing to attack is really not a good idea.

So after roughly 300 hours since I trusted my last random person...
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
I team up with complete strangers all the time, I find it pretty exciting. Many of my random encounters ended up with a new entry in my skype list or other communication programs. There were a few attempts of betrayal of course, but to my luck they failed to kill me. So, generally, if they have enough brain power, decency and courage to talk to you instead of firing their gun in panic, they are a lot less likely to kill you. Fortunately, those who would play with you for hours only to murder you afterwards seem to be a rare kind, at least judjing my personal experience back in the mod and the game. Those who attempted to betray me did that a few minutes later after our initial contact. Keep in mind that usually it's barely possible to figure out if he is going to betray you or not, so you should realise you are taking a risk. So you should decide what you value more, your items or a good company. -
Changes in spawnpoints compared to the mod
StopChewingMyLegDude posted a topic in New Player Discussion
Back in the mod most players spawned all over the south coast, occasionally at east coast with Solnichny being the most northen possible place and rarely in Novy Sobor. As far as I know, spawning changed in standalone, looks like more people spawn on the east coast now. If there is any particular information on changes of player spawning compared to the mod then I'd like to know. Do you still spawn at south coast, Balota and Chernogorsk in particular? If not, have they become less populated now? How's Berezino now? Used to be a pretty quite place compared to other two big coastal cities, now I assume there is much more traffic in there. -
"ARMA2 OA Has Stopped Working" | Please Help
StopChewingMyLegDude replied to MrJughead87's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I had a similar problem recently, not sure if it was exactly the same as yours though. I too could play for hours or crash randomly within a couple of minutes, and it was just in dayz. Are you sure drivers are okay? For me It turned out to be a video driver problem with my radeon hd videocard. Tools provided by manufacturer could not completely erase the old drivers when I was updating and what was left of them was interfering later. I had to try a bunch of third party programs to erase the old drivers entirely and for now I've yet to crash at least once. I used driver genius. -
