A serious question for the PvP-phobes
baz (DayZ) replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree with a few of the posts here, but everyone seems to have a different opinion so there aren't just two sides. Personally, I would like to be able to help people. Unfortunately, trying to meet someone in game that is armed is pretty much guaranteed to leave me with a bullet in the face. But at the same time, I want there to be risk involved. I don't want to be able to KNOW if a person is going to shoot me or not, but as it stands, I do know they will shoot me. So that basically removes the option to play as a helpful person, which, to me, is the most enjoyable option. Griefers and bandits give the game the excitement. I like that they are there, it gives me both a reason to be very careful, and it gives me a target that I can feel good about removing from the world. But suppose I approach someone from behind that doesn't know I'm there and I want to try to make contact. What's the safest way? I mean, I know that I don't want to kill them. But every experience I've had leaves me to believe that everyone (including myself after many peaceful attempts) shoots on sight. Bandit skins was an ok idea (I started playing shortly before they were removed so I didn't get the feel for it) but I agree that it's kind of missing the point of the game. As it seems many other artificial mechanics would. Although artificial, I think the heartbeat is a good idea and seems well implemented... similar to the bandit skin but you must get close (no idea how close as I've pretty much stayed clear of everyone). This works for bandits because if someone gets close enough to you to get the drop on you, then you probably deserve letting them know you are dangerous. And it works for people such as myself that want to help out or group up with strangers because there is still the risk that I have to get close enough to see if I can hear it, without remaining seen before I can make voice contact because everyone is still in shoot-on-sight. I propose no changes should be made to the current system of identification. Let the snipers snipe... it's easy to avoid them. Let the bandits do their bandit thing. They're easy to avoid too. Just stay away from the freaking military zones and large cities. Be extremely cautious when looting hospitals. If you want to make friends, sneak up on them from behind and command them to freeze over voice. Let them know your intentions and maybe something good will happen. Or maybe you'll have to put one in their skull. I would like to see NVG removed however. I currently have a set and it is overpowered compared to having to use glow sticks, flares, and flashlights, which I think is a lot of fun. Maybe make them so they have a limited battery life. Carry that over to the flashlight as well. Add batteries to the game. But that's for another thread I suppose. -
At this stage, DayZ is not playable.

Fortunately I can say that I have never been affected by a hacker either. I really enjoy the game... I suppose that means it is playable for me. -
I got killed by a server hopper. I quit.
baz (DayZ) replied to SP00KEH's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
OP! It's okay! You can tell us what really happened in the shower after you dropped the soap! -
Actually, I take that back... I WOULD absolutely like to see fixes for DC'ers and Server hopping for loot and ghosting. I personally have never been the vicitim of a server hopper, at least as far as I know, but the thought that it happens often annoys the crap out of me. These are two bugs that SHOULD absolutely be getting their primary attention.

Maybe I've learned to cope but I don't know what bugs you are talking about. I have never been killed by opening a door. In previous versions the leg breaking was insane, agreed, but I have only had one broken leg in 1.7.2.3, and that was from a zombie. And having been hit several times with no breaking legs, I figure that it was about time it happened. I only lost equipment once, and that was my camo when the last update was bugged. I've never been hacked, died randomly, or been teleported. Maybe hackers don't frequent the many servers I have played on (I try to play only on 3DP:OFF and CH:OFF servers, 3DP is lame for this genre IMHO, but that's for another thread) In the current patch, I have never been hit by a zombie through a wall. I don't think there is anything wrong with the loot system currently. It seems to be working fine. No bugginess there. If you enter several buildings and they are shy on stuff, then you are probably following behind someone who has already gotten to it. I don't see "pistols laying around everywhere". To be fair, I have been playing since June and probably have 40 hours or so, so I have learned to avoid standing next to walls, and when prone, not swiveling around a lot, and being careful with inventory because it is still buggy. 10 seconds to change from secondary to primary? Seriously? It takes about 3 seconds. That might be a tad long, but to holster a weapon, snap/strap it in securely, then sling the primary around to your front.... that takes time and is not safe to do while running. I think the instant weapon switch in all the FPS is lame. Just my observations on the current state of the game. I'm happy with it AS IS and enjoy it thouroughly. Any updates and improvements are just icing on the cake for me and my friends.

I think the map could stand to be a bit larger. It only took my friend and I 10 hours or so of slow and meticulous town hopping to get from Elektro to NW Airfield (have been playing for a month and this is my first time to visit). We, and a few other friends, had some really great experiences that will last a long time. And we're still alive, but who knows when that bullet with my name on it will leave the barrel. Or maybe I'll fall off a ladder? Not knowing, and being paranoid, is exciting. I think if you kill someone on the far edge of the map, there should be absolutely NO concern of them being able to run back to you to counter-attack. It should take hours at a full sprint.

I had a similar idea a few weeks ago.... it'd be fun to leave behind a note in your pocket for whoever killed you (or anyone that loots your body). Maybe with your stats on it (so they know if you were a murderer, or survivalist, how long you were alive, etc... plus a personalized message. But having sticky notes to post places would be cool too.

This one gave my group some lolz.... This past weekend, me and four others were in a group on a night server and none of us had NVG. We were having good fun raiding places with flares, glowsticks, and flashlights. We had just gone through the military tents at Berezino and were making our way uphill through some nearby trees to swing around and hit the hospital. I was in load with a glow stick and everyone was tight on my six. "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM" It must have been less than 10 feet from us.... a loud explosion, and whatever it was, scared the hell out of me. Artillery? Land mine? No, none of that stuff is in the game.... "Everyone ok?!?!??! What was that?!?" Two guys checked in with concussions but noone had any injuries whatsoever. We hunkered down for a few seconds, wondering "what the heck?" Then I heard flies buzzing and realized what had happened... I searched some nearby bushes and found the body of the guy who tried to throw a grenade at our group, but instead, bounced it off the tree in front of him, instantly blowing him to pieces. We searched him and he had NVG, GPS, plenty of other goodies, a Bizon with 3 clips. He could have just mowed us all down but I have to respect him for trying to give us a dignified (and much more interesting death). He totally had the drop on us, but Mr. Murphy was playing on our side that night. I'm still laughing about that poor sucker.

1.7.2 Opinion thread. All your opinions, good and bad, go here.
baz (DayZ) replied to Denuth's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I like the zombie behavior now, except for the occasional completely-distant-zombie-aggro-for-no-reason-whatsoever. I like that they are more likely to run almost directly at you which makes them easier to shoot without waiting for them to stop, hit you, then shoot. I still miss, but before, at least for me, it was a waste of ammo and "unwanted noise" to even try. I think 1.7.2.3 was a good step foward. -
If you like, please post. I was going to post something original but saw this one posted a while back so it got the bump. Let's make sure Rocket sees that we think this would be a good addition, and it seems doable within the engine, albeit a bit of a hack.
-
Holy crap. I've never seen a post that long anywhere. Got to point #1 and gave up because I still had no idea where you were going with it.
-
I agree, I think this would be a fantastic addition. I really like the system that fallout 3/NV have in place for weapon upgrades. They are quite rare and are a true treasure to find. Please start by adding a weapon-mounted flashlight (for the 1911?). That would be absolutely awsome.

The ONLY Realistic Way to Prevent Deathmatching: Make DayZ a Living Hell

I'm 100% with ya trout, when you load a game with oodles of military grade weaponry and more ammo than people know what to do with, it just turns into a frag fest. Bring it back to reality.... put in more weak civ weapons... handguns, shot guns (the double barrel was a great addition, well balanced imo). This shouldn't be freaking spec ops.... it's zombie survival.

Idea how to make killing a harder choice
baz (DayZ) replied to Paladyn's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just some thoughts, I don't think the solution is to punish those who shoot on site. I think something needs to be done to create a more trusting atmosphere. That way, survivors can group up and will be better suited to deal with bandits. I think taking away the beginning weapon was a step in the right direction. Make ammo more scarce. Make military grade weaponry more scarce. I love the introduction of the double barrel. It's a POS. I think that's great. Most of the weapons should be rusty POS's. Slow RoF, ammo takes a lot of room OR is rare, slow reload... etc. How can you load a game up with sniper rifles and AK-47's with ammo laying around everywhere and NOT expect it to turn into an fps? Fix DC'ing to get ammo back. The decision should be.. "Should I spend a few precious rounds to drop this person?" Ammo should be good as gold. Just some thoughts... -

Awsome purpose in life, but I can't help but imagine a guy in a white van driving through a neighborhood of children... "Psssst.... hey kid! I got sumpin' for ya! Step into my bush!" -
I've never had a funny death, but I did blow my buddy away with a revolver. He was on the other side of a pond with a zombie aggro'd on him. I think he was either reloading or out of ammo, but I took the shot. Killed them both lol.

Nice!

My friend and I were running through the woods north of Cherno. We only had hatchets as weapons. I knew it was a bandit sniper hotspot so we should have been more careful. But before we knew it, we were getting shot in the back by two unseen gunmen. They were close too. I turned around while they were shooting at my buddy and started charging at them swinging my axe wildly. They must have wasted 30 bullets bringing us down. I hope you two guys enjoy your beans. What a waste of life you are.

FYI, you can set six launcher to boot through steam... go to options.

HOW do you approach a person without getting shot?
baz (DayZ) replied to floodindahood's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The first several days of playing, I really enjoyed trying to meet up with people, and I successfully did run into some friendly people. Those were the most memorable experiences... finding out what they needed and helping if I could. But now, if they see me, I'm dead. If I see them and they don't see me, I let them go along their merry way. It just takes too long to get some decent starting equipment just to risk it trying to make contact with someone. The "feel-good" reward just isn't worth it. The only people I feel safe around are the people that don't have a gun. My friend and I have watched many people running around and didn't fire as we had no reason. I am usually killed by people I never knew were there. I wonder how many people see me and don't fire? I could be murderer, but it feels better to let people go if they give me no reason to attack. -
Unless we get flags/effects for murder, this game will just be Deathmatch.
baz (DayZ) replied to PinkTaco24's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Keep shooting them in the legs until they run out of morphine. :) -
I don't understand why it would be fun to play this game if you remove from your own gameplay the threat of dying? The threat of dying at anytime is one of the great aspects of this game that makes it intense and exciting. Take it like a man!

Confused. So you kill people or ?? Why is this in the survivor forum?
