    Law to Lawless Lands

My friend and I are currently playing in this manner. We tried to help two guys coming in from the coast last yesterday near Elektro... I made voice contact offering blood transfusion (one of them was bleeding as he ran across a field earlier) and anything else they may need. I think the leader got spooked and ran away over the ridge where they wwere both gunned down by a group of bandits. We proceeded to hunt the bandits. We were really close as they killed one or two more survivors, but there were 3 of them and 2 of us and we didn't have a safe shooting position, so we had to let them go. They never knew we were there so hopefully we'll get the chance again. I do feel better about TRYING to help even if we didn't really get to. I'm also glad the guy didn't blast me ( I think he saw me hiding in the bush....).

My new strategy for playing DayZ!

We'll probably pass each other as I'll be running away from the city when I spawn....

    1st Person vs. 3rd Person

I've only ever used 1st person and avoid 3DP ON servers like the plague. I also use Track IR. I don't understand the argument about 3DP being more realistic when it comes to peeking around corners. If you want to peek around a corner in 1st, then peek around the corner. The mechanic is already built in. If you want to peek over a wall, then crouch. Yeah, in real life, to peek over a wall, you have to expose half of your head.... Not only is that a major advantage for 3rd players, but it's unrealistic because they can literally watch you unrestricted (over a wall or around a corner) while you have no idea they are even there let alone know exactly where you are at all times, and have absolutely no chance of seeing them. That's immersion-killing for me, and is not unlike having an invisible wall hack. I'm not proposing all servers be forced to use 1st person, I'm happy as long as there are 1st person only servers.

    Convince me NOT to KoS

True, I don't disagree. Shooting on site is currently the best way to survive, assuming the other person has seen you as well, but you have already failed to make safe contact. If they have not seen you, then avoiding detection may be the best way. However, if you don't treat survival as your #1 priority, and instead treat the experience as your #1 priority, you won't be tempted to alt+f4, ammo reload glitch, server hop, etc.... Plus you have the chance to have these GENUINE experiences like the bus video above. And, for me, that is the most rewarding way to play. I mean, I could get a knife, matches, and hatchet and go live in seclusion indefinitely.... that would be treating survival as #1. But it's just not fun and it's currently not a challenge. I would much rather have some interaction with other players that goes beyond shooting bullets at each other. And with caution and use of a mic, I have successfully made that happen in my first few attempts at this new experiment.

    Convince me NOT to KoS

You are correct. Most people don't use the mic, simply because most others don't use the mic. Self-fulfilling I think. If more people used the mic, then more people would use the mic just because more ppl are using the mic.... make sense? Anyway, how do you know your mic is working? The only way you can know is you have been in game with someone else and they responded to your questions. Don't bother with direct chat (typing).... if you see someone, and they see you, you will probably die before you can type your first sentence. I died several times like this. Don't even bother, it's suicide. You can't be naive. You must still get the drop on people if they are armed. Get behind them, sneak up on them, stay hidden and/or behind cover. Try to judge their intentions by what they sound like, how they respond. If they try to role play some character, they're probably going to off you. If they sound young and/or immature, beware. It's not impossible to judge intentions by someones voice and use of words.
  6. I started out as a naive survivor thinking most people would be glad to meet up. After getting blasted in the face by several paranoid types, I avoided contact. Now I realize how KoS (for non-bandits) and isolationism is just boring and missing the potential that I originally saw in this game. I want excitement, I want tension... this doesn't come from shooting everyone I see. It comes from extending some measure of trust to some players. So bandits, keep on doing your thing. But survivors, don't trade in your humanity for security. That's just like any other first person shooter.
  7. I have less optimism for humanity, but I realize that's probably because few ppl use mics in-game.

Game busted, Help a bro out.

I believe his problem is that it will not successfully connect to servers through steam. I am also having the same issue and have to leave the steam checkbox unchecked... otherwise I get stuck on "waiting for host". It works fine if I don't go through steam in 6. I believe it worked in 1.7.1.5.

    Convince me NOT to KoS

Yes, get a mic. I finally got mine working and after dying recently, started a new character and I'm going to be cautiously good to people, particularly new spawns. But don't be naive and run up in front of people. You must still sneak up on them, see them before they see you. In-game voice is not directional so you can still stay hidden while attempting communication, which is important if they are armed. If people can hear your they seem to be much less likely to shoot on site. If they don't talk or chat back, then consider them hostile.... either shoot or retreat. If they talk back and act strange, maybe you shouldn't trust them. Use a mic and be good to others, and I believe it will spread, curing much of the paranoid shoot on site behaviour. Btw, that bus video is AWSOME.

    To the Bus Driver

I enjoy travelling with my friend who I know in real life, but it's interactions like these that are the core of the Dayz experience.
  11. I prefer no map.... having said that, my buddy and I used an external map just so meeting up would be possible when we first started, but we're are pretty good at that without the map now. Loot maps, IMO, are just shy of cheating. Randomize loot probabilities and it wouldn't be useful. Personally, I enjoy wandering through the wilderness and running into a city or a heli, or a deerstand by accident. Just some thoughts.

    A tense standoff at US195.

This is why I don't play 3rd person servers, but still a great fight, thanks for sharing the videos. It's cool that both sides are on the same post.

    Growing a beard

    Cool, thanks 4L4N.
  14. Sounds like an awsome idea, I hope it's considered. You get my beans!

Groups/Squads: A way to prevent KOS

I don't like the idea of everyone being "encouraged" to join up. The desire of joining up should be the only reason to join up. I'm starting an anti-KoS experiment. What I do is just use my mic and communicate with other players, especially players near the coast that look like they just spawned. I ask them if they need anything and if I can share, I do. I think just being a good samaritan will change the current mindset of shoot first, ask questions later. However, if radios are implemented, I think this idea may be useful for longer distance communication... By the way, how would you trust some random person that joins your group? Or why should you trust the person that started a group?

    Growing a beard

My friend had an awsome idea yesterday. I changed my profile to a guy with a beard and he said "Wouldn't it be cool if we started out with fresh shaves and then grew a beard that got longer the more time that we have survived?" How cool would that be? Would it be awsome to sport a badass 2 foot zz-top beard after having survived for a week or two (in-game time)? Or being able to tell who just spawned? I doubt it's doable with the current engine, but maybe something to put in the notebook for future use.... Who thinks this would be freakin' awsome??

How I stalked a group of bandits

Awsome work man, if I were them, I would have been crapping myself. Delightfully creepy.
  19. baz (DayZ)

Did I do the right thing?

Dude, THIS kind of thing is why DayZ is so incredible... to hear these kinds of stories about grouping up with a complete stranger and creating a story like this. Awsome. Bravo. Have beans! Me? I probably would have switched to hatchet and hacked at him for a while until he bled out.
  20. baz (DayZ)

    3rd person is MORE realistic.

I use Track IR.... quite incredible for this game. Although lately, when I'm looking at a photo or a screenshot, I'll shift my head to look around and wonder why my viewpoint isn't changing. That's how natural using it becomes.

Anyone in Cherno? The Good Old Dayz.

I like it without currently, but if I was a loner, I would understand it's enjoyment. I think the radio idea is a good compromise. Just a humorous story that pissed me off at the time but is pretty funny now... I had just spawned and was rummaging one of the southwest cities. I was still quite new and didn't use an online map so I had no idea where I was. I was watching global chat and one guy was chatting with another guy... Guy 1 "Hey, I think I see you, is that you at that loot pile on the porch in [some city]?" Guy 2 "Yeah, that's me, I'm a bandit" Guy 1 "You're walking now?" Guy 2 "Yup! You better not kill me!" I walk into barn and Guy 1 shoots me dead. Guy 2 is in Stary. The idiot didn't stop to consider that I can't type and move at the same time.
  22. Agreed, 3DP is pretty weak to me. US 212 I believe is hardcore.

My mom just asked me why I play DayZ.

LoL. One of the best lines from one of the best movies.

    Is anyone NOT a murderer?

Current life is my longest.... 12 days. 450+ zombie kills 2 murders 0 bandits One of the murders was my friend who I was on skype with. He had a broken leg so we decided he should be put down mercifully. Murder #2 I still feel kind of bad about. I was with my buddy on skype (as usual) and we heard some gunfire in Gorka as we were making our way through. We crept toward the gunfire looking for action. I saw a dead zombie on the ground and we went to defcon 1. I came around the front of one of those long barns and saw one man looking down at the ground...he had a shotgun. The guy was just standing there kind of facing my direction but looking at the ground. I figured he was in his inventory. At any moment he could have looked up and blasted me and my ingame mic wasn't working and I wasn't about to take my hands away to type. I didn't feel like running away... otherwise we wouldn't have gone toward the gunfire. I suppose we were looking for bandits, I certainly wasn't out to murder anyone innocent. I dropped him with two shots from my FAL. I still feel bad about that kill. But now I have my ingame mic working so I'll one other option open to me.
