Everyone plays the game the way they want, so...
mercules replied to NomadZ's topic in General Discussion
1. What functions will stop this but not be disruptive to normal gameplay for people who wouldn't otherwise do such a thing? 2. Not everyone will do it. In fact the majority of people won't do it. If you play on private servers it becomes even more rare as people will develop reputations and don't want to be, "That Guy" who combat logs in shame. -

How are they different? With both you are using a limitation or bug in the game to gain an advantage. The obviously can't have our characters hanging around in game for 10 minutes after we log out as people in 'safe' areas would get killed 8 minutes after they logged out by a random zombie or someone who was not in the area before. The 30 seconds is supposed to help and I wouldn't want it much higher than that, but it's not always easy to realize someone is logging out while in cover. It boils down to someone saying to themselves that they are going to play a game where part of the draw is that you can lose everything in a heartbeat, but then exploit the logout to prevent the main feature of the game from happening. -
How would you feel if 1st person perspective was mandatory?
mercules replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
Actually, Vanilla Epoch was not all that easy. The problem is that Epoch(due to the construction) can't be connected to a hive so all the servers were private servers and all those owners tended to mod Epoch into easy mode. "Safe Zones" do not exist in Epoch, nor do traders with unlimited inventory, or 10 million vehicles you can sell. Basically to get NVGs someone had to loot and sell them to a trader for it to go into the Trader DB, but people didn't like that so the owners would run a script to refill trader inventory every restart. -

This is a poor justification that is provably false. I have never combat logged. Heck, when there was a hacker teleporting around my friends and I went back to back and unloaded as he teleported near to us. He cut one friend down but then was shotgunned into oblivion. He quit the server. Maybe he came back under a different name.... but we didn't have any other hacker problems that night. -

I know, it's almost like switching to 3rd person to see if there are any infected behind those fences or around those corners. Wouldn't want to make survival too difficult. Okay, in all seriousness, Combat logging is outright dumb. Someone combat logging is not cheating other players of their gear, but themselves of a chance interaction, good or bad. Suddenly most of the actual danger is gone from the game. Might as just play a game that spawns you with gear. -

Headbob seems to be the worst offender for most people and I've run into a few that didn't know they could turn that option off. I'm sure you have already tried it though. The other things that it seems like affects others is low FPS or small jerky lag spikes. Maybe once DayZ is optimized and a bit slicker a low ping server might work for 1st person for you. Then again it could be that the characters in DayZ tend to have a bit of 'weight' to them. Moving your mouse fast doesn't make them move anyfaster after a point and starting and stopping seem to have some shift in balance. That could throw people off. I know I ran around on a fun 1st/3rd server tonight and I spent a lot of time in 3rd. Once I got tangled into a bunch of buildings and was looting closed in spaces I pretty much had to switch to 1st and that first 5 minutes of it was rough. I quickly adapted again, but I did feel out of control and that might be what is doing that. I have a hard time imagining getting sick from motion, I never have. One of the other games I play regularly is MWO and in that I play one of the fastest Mechs in the game. I also have a TrackIR which works for DayZ and MWO and in MWO playing my Commando I will snap my torso to the side while turning my head(pilot) to the other side to look out the side window and track things I am turned away from so that they can't get a great shot on me while zig-zagging. I will snap back around, shoot, and then snap to protect my center with my arms and sides. I do this while broken running at mechs to make projectile shots miss and rolling my torso back and forth so that lasers don't burn through any particular section but get spread out. This is all happening at 170kph in game and the Commando has quirks to make it turn faster than any other mech so I am really weaving, dodging, twisting, and snapshotting while I play. Here is the point of that anecdote. Once dead teammates can observe things from your cockpit as if looking through your eyes. I have made several teammates ill or given them headaches trying to spectate as me. "I'm sorry Merc, I can't spectate you or I am going to hurl." So I really don't get the motion sickness thing although I rationally know it exists. -

Ah... I don't like to make a puppet dance. I prefer to see it in 1st. I feel like it is more 'me' instead of my puppet. As I feared, overseas and I had to bump my ping filter up to see it. Sorry, I would join it otherwise. :( -

Share the IP or name and if the ping isn't horrible I'll jump on it for sure. My friends are playing on Gents of Novo right now because it's a blast wandering into Novo and hanging out with friendly people as it is a no PVP city for the most part where people set up trading spots and such, but it is 1st/3rd and that is one thing none of us like about it. -

It's not, not really. Are there any 1st person only vanilla servers left? If so do you think they would be a little more challenging? (Probably not as zombies are so easy to avoid in the mod. Run them into a building and pop them when they slowly shuffle toward you.) I know flying a helicopter in 1st is a nice challenge. You really have to retrain yourself. -

This doesn't exist. Why? Because at the end of the day you can never know if someone is watching you. In 1pp they have to at least have a part of their head sticking out of cover to see you. Eh... unlikely. 1pp you at least have to risk some body parts to gather information. It's a tradeoff. You could use concealment like a bush and hope they don't notice you(then again you can't swing the camera around to see how well you are concealed so sometimes it is a guess that is wrong) or hard cover but then you have to peek out a bit and risk getting shot. Either way to have eyes on target you have to expose yourself which means there is a trade-off and knowing when to risk exposure for intel is yet another skill and aspect of combat 3pp skips right over. 1st brings suppression into the mix too. 3rd he can shoot around and into your cover but you just laugh and watch him. In 1st you have a few shots zip past you, a few more, and then you wonder, "Is he waiting or reloading? Can I peek?" In 3pp you can see if he is reloading or ducked into cover or started running away... -

Well, I was pretty sure you missed it the first time since you repeated the exact same fallacy that since something is popular it must be better. ;) I actually think those who don't play 1st person are doing a disservice to themselves and DayZ. I give my wife no end of grief for listening to Nickleback, I'm not going to tell her she can't, but I will happily tell her my opinion as to the quality of that band. Just like I'll let everyone who takes the easy way out that I think they are missing something. The only reason 3pp servers are an issue for me is that like the "Staring Loadout AK/Food/Water/Backpack" servers for the mod I believe it removes some of the challenge and therefore some of the enjoyment of playing a tough game. It's like enabling cheat codes in a 1st person game. Sure it doesn't hurt anyone, but I would advise not using them because it can ruin the game. As long as those servers exist players will take the easy way out. Is it private or public. You will find a lot of the people who enjoy 1pp also tend to hop on private servers, again, better experience, can't server hop for loot and such. And why do you play Vanilla? Because it is more or less challenging than some of the mods? -
If English is not your first language please use Google Translate. Despite it's horrible translations it would at least use real words. If English is your first language... well... most browsers now have spell checkers, please use one. On topic. The solution is private servers. People don't tend to log out in a bad location in a private server. There is no Ghosting to get behind someone and people can't server hop to loot things and end up behind you. If you don't like that aspect, play on Private servers, that is what I do.

Your new one: Hipster would mean I dislike 3rd because it is popular, which is untrue. I dislike it because it has multiple flaws that hurt DayZ gameplay and make it less worthwhile and meaningful. -

Combat in 3pp: 1. Find cover 2. Look over and around cover 3. Shoot other person when you see them leaving cover Boring and Easy. AI in 3pp: 1. Look over cover 2. avoid zombie by watching them and moving when they are not looking since you can see them and they can't see you. Alternately sneak up on animal using cover because you can see them and they can't see you. This alll equates to very boring and easy-mode gaming. -

Say goodbye to you flashlights. (and free batteries)
mercules replied to emuthreat's topic in General Discussion
My keyring has a tiny LED flashlight on it which is actually pretty bright. You can open bottles and cut carboard with your keys. If you are not afraid to work at it you can slowly saw through things with the right keys, I had cut one just for sawing when I worked at a place where I cut keys. ;) I used to always carry a lighter, typically the windproof ones. My car is way worse. I tend to have a duffel or other carrying bag in there, often old clothes in case I go somewhere and need to get dirty. Gloves, boots, and winter gear. In Summer that means a hoody. First aid kit + extra stuff I like to have like a barrier for mouth to mouth, extra gloves, baby diaper(slap it around a limb and pull it tight then use the little sticky tabs to hold it, instant large bandage that doesn't leak), and more. I no longer have the wood axe in there, but there is a large knife, some rope, bungee cords, and a collapsible shovel. If I crashed someone out of the way I could survive for a bit, possibly even hike out of there. -

Listening to Justin Beiber must be an amazing experience then.... Oh wait. Um.... McDonalds must have AMAZING food then.... No? But they have however many trillion served... seems popular. Well Oliva Newton-John's 'Physical' must be the best and most influential piece of music to come out of the 1980s as it was one of the top 100 hits for the '80s, right? -
You what? No, you give an ESTIMATED time that service will be back up. That estimated time is "If things go mostly normal with a few setbacks.". If something bad happens then it will be pushed out, probably with a new estimate on when service will resume. There is no precision to it. You want to leave room for bad things to happen and might be up earlier, but at the same time you don't want to over estimate how long it will take. That is not precise. Per tweets I've seen getting persistence back into .57 is a priority. It will be disabled, but for a good reason and they will be adding it back in. What they are doing is making sure the SPAWNING of items is working correctly. Disabling persistence means that on every restart items will spawn giving them really good data on if the Central Loot is working as intended. See, there are problems with it right now but by disabling persistence they can eliminate one variable and make sure the spawning portion is working correctly. They said something about it close to a month ago.

Yeah, that is the next generation, N key rollover. Hmmmmmm... Looks like some solid products. Too bad they don't make a gaming Keypad, I really like all the extra things under my thumb. Then again it looks like they have a lot of things in development so I'll have to keep an eye on Max Keyboards. :)

How would you feel if 1st person perspective was mandatory?
mercules replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
Except there is nothing you can do to prevent that. No, "Working Harder" can overcome the fact that someone is camping a rooftop unless there happens to be a hill you can climb that has a higher elevation nearby. Of course that still doesn't stop the, "I'm hiding around the corner of the jail out of sight". In addition as I have mentioned multiple times, combat boils down to sitting behind cover using 3rd to watch your opponent's movement. This is a lot easier than having to judge if it is worth sticking some part of your body out to get eyes on your opponent. What if you stay hunkered down and he is moving to flank you and negate your cover? You can't see if he is, but what if he is posted waiting for your head to come out of cover already aiming at your location? You can't sit here, but you can't poke out.... Did he just bounce a round off my cover to force me to stay here while he moves or did he see some portion of me and fire but hit cover instead? Against AI, they don't get a periscope so they become easy to avoid or track. -

I could point to countless studies and psychology that shows that when people work for something they appreciate it more. There is a reason people are playing DayZ which is supposed to be a difficult struggle as opposed to countless other games where you do not have to worry about food, disease, and such and start with gear. Games where ammo falls off AI bodies so you don't have to carefully ration it, and such. If you don't care about the PVP aspect of the game, well 3rd person makes everything easier. You can stalk AI animals who can't see you because you are behind cover that you can look over and around with 3rd person. You can easily avoid zombies in towns in the same way. If you do care about the PVP portion 3rd person ends up boiling it down to hiding in cover watching your opponent hiding in cover. Many viable tactics get thrown out the window like suppression. CQC room clearing is a joke because either they are sitting in a location where they can see a person coming, or you can sweep a room without ever exposing yourself to fire. On top of that being locked into 1st person adds another comparison value to things like Backpacks and Jackets as some end up blocking visibility when you look behind you. In 3rd this never even comes into play and so one whole "feature" of gear balance is ignored. You usually won't see someone in 1st run around with a mountain backpack unless those extra slots REALLY mean a lot to them because it completely blocks vision over your shoulders which you often use in 1st. So it might be opinion but I can use factual evidence to support my opinion just like you are using your sickness as a fact to support your opinion that 3rd is better. I do have to ask though, is it all 1st person games, or just DayZ in 1st? -
Not really Razer has developed a system for what they call "anti-ghosting" that allows 10kro.

The new 3pp camera and FOV Slider
mercules replied to Julianwop (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
No contradiction. The backpack you LIKE doesn't let you see over your shoulder, but you want to see over your shoulder... maybe you shouldn't "like" that one so much. See, that is part of the point. In 3rd person I use the biggest backpack because it is the biggest backpack and holds more crap. In 1st I NEVER use that backpack if I have any other choice because the trade-off of more spaces isn't worth the loss of awareness. See, right there you helped me demonstrate how 1st helps bring more depth to the game. Mountain Backpack is the "best" for space but horrible for view. Drybag and Tortilla have great space but can block a small amount of your view. The Hunting and Improvised don't block your view at all but don't hold as much as some and are not waterproof. See how the one difference gives different items different qualities and makes more than one backpack a solid choice? It's give and take. Ghillie Wrap on your gun can help hide it and you, but can also block LoS in 1st person. Many of my friends no longer craft one because of that. Vehicles are HARD to drive in 1st they really limit your view so you can be ambushed very easily... but in 3rd they actually give you a BETTER view of what is around you than when on foot. No trade-off in 3rd, in first it is a trade-off of armor and speed versus awareness.
