Turning off the black thing in Night Vision ?
mercules replied to mbelholm's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Not a bug, it's a feature. That is like saying, "I want a button that just nukes all the zombies and teleports the guns and ammo within 2 klicks into my Ural." This is working as it should no matter how you personally think it should work. If you don't like it don't play the game or make YOUR server daytime 24/7 and you never have to worry about it. -
When I go it alone in Vanilla DayZ. First thing I do is figure out where the nearest Industrial loot spawn is in either an out of the way spot or on the outskirts of a city is. I go through them fairly quick and my main goal is a hatchet. I won't pass up guns/food/water or even a Jerry Can, but that is my first goal. From there I head away from the coast and start to hit every deer stand that is not overlooking a major hot spot. If you need a backpack a place like one of the castles can actually be easier to loot than a grocery store but it is still a quick in and out sort of thing. I tend to stick more to the East than the West when alone simply because Stary and the NW airfield are huge PVP areas and the only water around is close to them. Hidden in the woods to the east is water and a lot of lonely lesser loot spawns that are easier to sneak into and loot for single players. In Stary, Cherno, Elektro, and NWAF you really should have backup. Meat is your friend. Stick somewhere near water, a forest, and a Deer Stand. You can often find animals in the fields near deer stands and once you have a Hatchet(industrial), Matches(deer stand), and Hunting Knife(deer stand) you are set up for food and Water Bottles also drop in the Deer Stand so in short order you should have what you need to survive. Always boil the water and cook the meat and your chance of infection should be very low. From there you can strike out further and further from your "base" of operations.

I don't know about that. Here is a video showing a Baboon and a Chimpanzee. We are more closely related to the chimps which are apes and notice how the baboon tries to bite but the chimp swings. While apes do grapple and bite our general nature is to strike and swing our arms. The "infected" tend to react in very primitive ways. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERwZwaOUyjs So, yes the swinging and striking should remain the main attacks for infected. Notice though, that they have added knock-down attacks to their arsenal and once you are knocked down then the biting and gouging. This seems to fit with limited behaviour. The main reason old school zombies grab on and bite is because of the image of flesh eating and hungry undead. Cannibalism is shocking and so monstrous zombies such as Romero style ones were depicted as craving flesh. With that primary focus on shoving something into your mouth to bite it off and swallow of course you get grappling and biting as your primary attacks. The "zombies" in DayZ are based off "Rage" zombies which do not seek to feed but instead lash out at anything and everything around them except other infected(Yeah I don't get that last part either). If they bite it is to rip someone open and for the most part they smash, hit, tackle, beat, pound, crush... you get the picture.

Turning off the black thing in Night Vision ?
mercules replied to mbelholm's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Notice the "Black Thing" making your field of view on your main screen into nothing but a circle. That is ALL you can see and why your other screens go black. You can see only straight ahead in that little circle because that is all the goggles show you. Working as intended, don't use them and have a wide field of view or use them and see clearly but only in that narrow circle. -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
mercules replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
First Person Perspective with the head bob settings turned off is exactly the same as Third Person Perspective except you can't see around objects without sticking your head around them. I don't think he is being a douche or inconsiderate just explaining to them that their issue is not with 1st PP but with Head Bob which can be disabled. Ergo, their issue isn't relevant to the discussion at hand. -
Deer Stands - the risk reward for them is a very good ratio. I'm not talking about Balota but the ones out away from everything else. I'll end up detouring for them. Typically when I spawn I'll head for a shed or industrial spawn and once I have a hatchet get out of town. I then hit the woods and pick up my other sundries from Deer Stands. They offer Maps, Matches, Hunting Knives, food & drink, Water Bottles, a Variety of guns & ammo, Antibiotics, Painkillers, Bandages, Morphine, and a bit more. Everything you need to survive OTHER than a Hatchet and better backpack. Once geared up I tend to hit them for the chance of extra ammo or a Machete, spare water bottle, and such. Sometimes you can just let the Zombies wander away from them other times you have to deal with 1 maybe 2 with no other zombies nearby so you can pop them both from range, run in, and frequently find something useful. There are enough out in the wilds you can avoid most other players instead of trying to loot a firehall for a military gun and getting sniped.

Night of the Living Dead zombies would be even less of a threat than current DayZ zombies. Sure, we would have to headshot them but they would move so slowly we could easily do so. I like the choice of 28 Days Later or Quarantine style zombies where the zombies are not really dead but infected. They are faster and more of a danger and they do tend to strike and smash more than bite. I like that they run at us when alerted and I kill them as quietly as I can from a distance to avoid them running at me because they are NotLD speed when just wandering around and easy to take out, even in large groups. It's when that group is alerted and running at you, that you decide you had better switch to full auto or run like crazy and those moments can get wild.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
mercules replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When I was first introduced to DayZ I think I played it the way it was intended to be played, and not how I eventually came to play it. For the most part I stuck to first person perspective and worked within that because DayZ was, in my opinion at the time, supposed to be immersive, a simulation, and a survival game. The server we played on also had no crosshairs and a full day night schedule that they switched around so it was sometimes night when I was playing. Those first few weeks had me seriously enjoy the game. Back then Zombies made me nervous. I could hear them all around me but I couldn't always pinpoint their location. Something happened though, and I started to play in 3rd person. I think it was dealing with people who were on servers that allowed it. 3rd person became default and Zombies lost the little bit of fear they generated. I could now use 3rd person to see them around corners or over obstacles without agroing them. I could see when one ran up behind me and didn't have to look over my shoulder to make sure. It didn't matter that the mod I was playing had stances for peeking around corners because I could just see everything with 3rd person and the minimal movement of the "peek" stance didn't alter that view hardly at all so it was never used where as before I used it all the time. The game lost a lot for me. Day/Night is the same way. My friend had mostly played on a server where the admins just switched to day any time they felt like it so it never really got dark. We then played on a server and ended up with it being full night, overcast, and after the moon had set. He couldn't see a foot in front of his face. I introduced him to the beauty of weapons with flashlights, glowsticks, and most importantly, Road Flares. We had some vehicles and using them at night was much more difficult. Night pickup with a helicopter? Not so easy. With a road flare tossed out to illuminate the landing zone? Much easier, but it ALSO gave away your position in a big way as did turning on the spotlights and headlights on vehicles. It adds a lot, just like first person perspective. -
Does the Video card you plugged the cable into support sound? That would be where I would start before wondering if it is a setting in a game.

What do you do when you already looted everything?
mercules replied to Meteo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You could gather more gear and leave things in tents near spawn points. Things geared up players wouldn't care about but Bambi would love. Matches, Hatchet, Knife, Water Bottle, Map, and Compass. -
Alt-F4 is a Windows command. That means it is fairly high level. The person running it would have to be a Local Admin on the machine for the software to override the Windows default. Now, most people will be playing this on their own computer so they will be Admins Buuuuuuuuuut... Windows Vista/7/8 all run programs by default as User and not Admin so the software wouldn't gain permission to override the Alt-F4 command unless the person told Windows to "Run As Admin". This means many people would have a way to get around it, while the honest people who don't do this already would be the only ones running it correctly.

Melee Weapon Quick Switch Help/Advice
mercules replied to r4z0r49's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
1. Is fine, but has all the annoyance of swapping weapons just extended a bit. 2. Is bad. If it had a delay that would be fine even if it didn't do the animation. 2 seconds without being able to fire or melee would keep it from being abused.
