First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
mercules replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Wait a second. You understand that the way TPV is being used is not how it was intended for the game and might be broken, but that is okay because it is a personal preference? :D I could do a glorious slippery slope about hacks not being what the developers are intending and breaking the rules but that is okay because they are a personal preference... Hmmm... I kinda just did but I admitted it was not a valid argument. Here is the thing. when you play the game in a way not intended by the developer of the game you are using an exploit, it is broken, and is no longer a "preference" and now in the realm of being an ass to others. Yes, anyone can do it and probably should if they want to have a fair chance but it does change the nature of the game and possible ruin an experience for everyone. It has been pointed out in this thread multiple times how TPV allows people to camp an area and shoot others safely and easily. It has been pointed out how much easier it is to avoid zombie agro in TPV and how that lowers the difficulty of the game by at least a tiny amount. Yes people prefer EASIER, people preferred starting with a pistol but that went away despite that preference because it was not good for the game. Hiding in safety with full view of what is going on is not good for the game, that exploit needs to go away even if TPV sticks around. -

Except it isn't really personal preference. Several of us have pointed out the exploits available in TPV, Rocket has admitted TPV is being used in a way that was not intended to the point he is going to change it, a game broken by a bad mechanic is not a good thing for anyone. It's not just, "My way is better." there are actual problems with using TPV in this type of game. By removing the worst of the exploits I think Mr. Hall is going in the right direction while still keeping it around. I don't hink TPV fans will be utilizing it all that much because it isn't going to make the game any easier than FPV anymore. Broken mechanics are broken mechanics, not a "preference". -
Item damage in Dayz SA looks dumb...

Yeah, I mean when I chop things with my ax it stays sharp and useful and I never have to sharpen it.... oh wait. -

Exactly what view do you think you are using when you go into Iron Sights? Hint: It isn't TPV. ;) So it if was TPV ~ONLY~ you wouldn't have Iron Sights. -
Item damage in Dayz SA looks dumb...
mercules replied to scaramoosh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Um... it's not feature creep. Not everyone works on the same part of the code. So we should just have Bill sit around and watch netflix all day while waiting for Bob to finish the network bubble that is actually what they are waiting on to release SA? Instead we could pay Bill to code the inventory system, or have John work on new textures... nah... pay them to sit and do nothing while we wait for the important stuff. -
Probably Breaking Point if it is off the coast of Elektro. I now he played Breaking Point for a bit. Ignore meat pie, he seems to be ignorant of the fact that just getting out of the chopper will trigger some loot spawns, doing a quick circuit will trigger the rest and by the time you circle back through all the areas the loot has spawned.

Does anyone even remember what DayZ is?
mercules replied to Xianyu's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, actually you did. You see stating that we are the reason DayZ will never amount to anything is an indirect way to say we are wrong. The great thing is, we are not wrong. Games can succeed without having to give instant gratification. http://www.penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/when-difficult-is-fun -
I really hope Rocket doesn't allow modding for SA.
mercules replied to billyangstadt's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
With the good, comes the bad. I've seen some great little additions in mods. Things like the ability to load a bicycle into a car/truck don't change the general theme or difficulty of DayZ while still adding something to the game. The effect is very minor. It means you can quickly transport yourself and maybe tires and such around and fix up a car and then load your trusty bicycle into it so you don't have to decide between something that you will need to gas up and maintain or handy efficient transport that can't carry others or extra gear. It doesn't alter your chances of finding a car/bike or make either more powerful. Those are awesome mods, that just add something a little extra to the game without changing the flow of it. At the opposite end we have armored military vehicles and in turn guns that can blow said vehicles up and will insta kill people. We also have mods where you spawn in with gear you would normally need to work for and I am not talking about pistols but NVG(which I have never worn although I owned a pair briefly once), DMR, and a Ghillie. They really turn DayZ into something not DayZ. -
Why you need DayZ standalone argue points.

I'm trying to think of ONE zombie apocalypse game that even comes close to Vanilla DayZ mode much less surpasses it. -
You don't understand germs, do you. When a player is infected he is not infected with the virus that is causing the Zeds to be Zeds. Our player is not that way because they are IMMMUNE to that particular virus(which must be airborne given the number of Zeds). also, antibiotics do not cure viruses, antivirals do. antibiotics cure bacterial infections. You can get infections from the water with things like Dysentery. You can get infections from cuts and scrapes and end up with Gangrene from Clostridium which is about everywhere in nature. You can end up with Strep which can become Pneumonia or Bronchitis if not taken care of with antibiotics and is life threatening at that point. Not all infections would make you cough but the game mechanic is more to let you know you need a course of antibiotics all the ones I mentioned can be fatal if left untreated. All the Zeds are infected with a virus but I assume the "Infected" zeds are probably more disgusting and unclean than usual, teeming with bacteria. Maybe they are gangrenous themselves or have a form of leprosy(which is caused by a bacteria).

While others have said it a bit harsher they are speaking the truth. Not all games are meant for all people. If Vanilla DayZ is not rewarding enough that you would have to find something else to play, then find something else to play. One of my friends LOVES Kerbal Space Program but the other one played the demo and sees that it is not his sort of game. Because of that he does not play that game. He doesn't ask for someone to come in and mod the game so that he can do a perfect moon shot without planning. The difficulty of the game is the point of that game and the gathering of items, dying and losing everything, and then starting all over with nothing is a big part of DayZ. It is actually what defines DayZ and the experience around DayZ. -
Actually it is only fun when I have a chance of maybe surviving the experience. I spawned in Solnichny a couple weeks back and hit some barns and industrial areas looking for even a hatchet so I could kill a zombie if I had to. I found some food, some drink, a couple bandages that I ended up using because of the zombies that seemed to get lucky that day and make me bleed every single time they hit me. there was so much shooting going on in that town I left it and headed up the road towards Dolina hoping to pick up SOMETHING along the way that could take down a zombie. No gun, very little food and water, only a bandage and no painkiller even I start getting shot at. Not even a Lee Enfield but a full auto gun being sprayed at me. Something Stanag by the sound of it. I evaded the fire, crossed the road to the South side and tried to just get clear. More auto fire hitting the trees. Must have been two clips total emptied before they hit me enough to break my leg and finally were able to kill me. For what? I used the last bandage and ate the last of my food to stay healthy enough to keep ahead of them and they still hunted someone without even a backpack much less a weapon or ammo down. Way to waste two clips of Stanag for no apparent reason. It wasn't exciting or fun, it was a very "facepalm" moment. This would be why I tend to try and hunt bandits instead especially those KoSing Bambies.

It was one of them, but I wouldn't say THE most influential video game ever. Probably the most successful coin-op game ever though. -
All games are very poorly optimized these days. I swear developers look at what the latest computers are capable of, build for something one step back from that, and then go, "Eh, good enough." I remember the old days where they had nothing to work with and tried to cram as much as they could into the least amount of resources they could. ;)

mercules replied to AP_Norris's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think what a LOT of people are missing about DayZ SA is that when the Alpha becomes available it WILL have a lot less "Features" than any of the mods including the current Vanilla version. Yeah, it is going to be primitive compared to them. This is really a "Duh!" moment though and the reason I say that is because instead of working on features they are working on Framework. Think of building a house. Other people are taking ARMA II/III and the DayZ mod as it exists and are making some pretty amazing houses out of it. They have the breakfast nook, the reading room, the new deck, a family room with an entertainment center, and all that. DayZ SA by comparison has a pretty bare kitchen, doesn't have a deck at all yet, and the entertainment center is only a TV and Blueray player right now. HOWEVER, he has been spending more time building a new foundation. The Mod is stuck peicing on new rooms and reorganizing the space to be different things. The SA doesn't have an indoor swimming pool yet but the foundation was built in a way it can have one. That is what he has been spending his team's time on, all these new structures and foundations that will let him surpass the Mods in big ways. Many people can't see that because right now we have a structure that doesn't have siding or windows yet and is mostly a box with a roof and almost complete walls. They won't know that instead of drilling holes in the walls and floor to include cable/LAN access the walls have all the wires buit in before the drywalling and just need to be hooked up to a proper router when that day comes. They no have idea why an object based inventory structure is so much better than what the Mod is basically stuck with. Sure you can update some of it so it functions similarly to SA for portions of it, but without the other pieces it won't be able to do the item degradation portion or maybe not as well. It might not handle containers inside containers as well. I'm not sure how ARMA III handles items and inventory but if it hasn't changed a lot even those mods of the mods might not handle such things. They have not built FEATURES in full because they have built potential for all new features and expanding existing features. They will be behind the Mods right now, but they are building for the future not tomorrow. -

I disagree... I think what you call "really good quality" would have been crap by my standards. I'm not a hipster but I still often prefer things that the "masses" don't always get. Had they watered down Firefly to appeal to the masses it still wouldn't have gotten 10 years and it wouldn't be as good as it was. Watering down games is, in my opinion, the same sort of thing. Water it down for the masses and you have something that might as well be the other games BUILT for the masses but with slightly less appeal for either the masses or a core group of niche players. At that point it really has no place as it isn't watered down enough for the masses to love it and isn't niche fitting enough to build up a loyal following. -

Ah, but just because Rocket stated how things will be, that doesn't remove the discussion. I think people need to go back and read the OP and watch the video again. Aside from SmashT's additions the topic was really a debate about the merits of FPV versus TPV and about Dslyecxi's arguments for playing in FPV. While this was also a discussion about changing the norm for SA, which is not going to happen, it was ALWAYS a discussion of the benefits of playing in FPV. -

Maybe, but I watch all of Firefly and Serenity at least once a year. It is very unlikely I would have bought the disks and recommended them to friends if it had gone the, "Well we have to have X so we can get more people watching. In other words I am really glad I got all the quality Firefly had to offer instead of a water-downed to appeal to the masses version that might have had more episodes. http://www.kongregate.com/games/briderider/fps-man Yeah, it takes Pac Man from a boring sad little game to a challenge where you can't plan out a route, see the ghost that will be closing on you and re-route easier, or see if one of the 2 ghosts behind you split off to cut off any turns you might make. In other words it becomes challenging and fun and almost spooky having to try and spot ghosts while gathering up the dots. -------------------------- Look guys, SA is going to alter both FPV and TPV. It looks like it is going to make FPV more appealing to play in and remove the TPV exploits or at least the most egregious ones. I'm good with that. -
YES! I always boil water unless I am desperate. As far as I can if you fill 3 water bottles from a pond and 1 from a well the game can't tell the difference between them they are all just "Water Bottle". So there is a chance of infection from any plain old "Water Bottle" and you only get rid of that chance if it is "Water Bottle (Boiled)". I think it checks the chance when you drink so it really doesn't care about the source of the water.

It looks like that intensity is supposed to be a part of the game. I think it works better in FPV. That is all. -

See, and that is where I am going to disagree with you. I see DayZ as a survival horror game and I believe FPV best fits that because the best way to bring about the horror element is to limit people's perspectives. This would be why horror movies tend towards dark setting with tons of shadows or flashing lights and billowing smoke/steam that makes it hard to see. This would be why they tend to go into narrow close shots in many horror movies that if not the character's exact point of view are often limited by their position. http://vimeo.com/53743444 Go to 5:00 and see how the very tight shot on Ripley even when we are in 3rd person doesn't show the area around her much. Notice how they keep switching into her perspective and how that builds tension? I can't find a short cut of that scene right off hand while at work but I think that view demonstrates how things get intense when the view is limited. -
You use more water if on foot than food. In a vehicle it is the other way around. I tend to carry 2 of one and 3 of the other depending on how I am traveling, but that also only happens when I have a stockpile somewhere. With no stockpile I tend to hold onto about 4 of each AT LEAST and will always pick it up if I have empty space because I can simply dump it or use it if I find something else I need to pick up.
