Watch the movie that the Zeds in DayZ are based off of, "28 Days Later". Then watch the second movie 28 Weeks Later where a single infected person basically wipes out the newly established civilization that is moving back into Britian by infecting others and it moves through the population in a few hours. Do you honestly believe it wouldn't? As you like to point out Dean Hall stated he would like to introduce these features. Not he would like it to be like... but stated that he would like to make it so that if you don't eat enough variety then you could have complications and even die. Check out Scurvy some time. It is amazing what a lack of vitamin C can do. 1-3 months and you can start having issues healing from injury. That could be a serious issue in an apocalypse. I look at the food in my pantry,my wife and I tend to do things like buy canned goods or pasta when they are on sale and buy more than what we need for that week then use it up as we go along and it isn't on sale, right now I could probably live for a month off that food and the great thing about the Zeds is they won't be eating their food. We have vitamins and things like mandarin oranges so we probably wouldn't have to worry but if you look at the food in DayZ Vanilla none of it contains vitamin C other than the trace amounts in Mountain Dew. We need to assume DayZ is a bit accelerated on time as sneakers won't wear out in a couple days of running unless you are treating them extremely poorly, and you don't need a beefsteak every few hours. Assume your character lives for a week and we are talking about a month's time. If during that time you haven't consumed anything with Vitamin C in it then there is a small chance of gaining the Scurvy status. Go another week and we are talking a much higher chance. By a third week you should start to bleed a bit more from hits and not get as much health back when you do get treatment. It would add something beyond, "I have 8 Beefsteaks, I'll just ignore cans of food." Might make something like "Vitamins" a good find for those that hope to exist for a while while those that just want to get back to Cherno and PvP will probably ignore them. There is PLENTY of food all around you. I don't think you realize how much food your corner gas station like SA, Holiday, 7/11, PDQ, and such contain. Within 10 miles of my apartment I can count 4 grocery stores, 45+ restaurants, 5 gas stations. Yes people would make runs on food and water, if they had time, but given the speed of infection going on in 28 Days Later series they really won't have a ton of time to stockpile. My major concern would be ammo. I don't stock much for my shotgun and there is a ton of potential Zeds all around me.

Would that be because they haven't done all the zombie changes yet? That in the videos posted so far they have done 0% of the zombie updates?

Um... they did in SA. ????

I think you need to read the articles. Like the very first one I linked there. Take note of the line of text that reads: Those are diseases that can happen even when you have enough food to eat but don't eat the right things. That would be the point of pointing them out... wouldn't it. Do people die of these diseases alone? Let's see, reading what I linked again would tell us: Oh! Look at that! Death from not having vitamin C. Only been known about since... well, recorded history. You just don't understand that having enough to eat ISN"T enough alone. You also have to have certain things in your diet or you will either become incapacitated like going blind from Xerophthalmia or partially immobilized from Scurvy, or even die. Both of those affect HEALTHY adults who end up on a diet that lacks certain vitamins. You know, like eating nothing but cans of beans for months on end. You don't need to have a lack of food to die. Lack of proper diet is enough and they have already talked about adding that part in.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)

Ah, I see... so your "logical" conclusion is that people actually like TPV better but then feel embarrassed and so lie about their preference. Have you ever heard of a "Circumstantial Ad Hominem" it is where someone states that other people's argument is invalid because they are only stating that because it is in their own interest to say so. You are approaching this form of fallacious argument by trying to say people actually prefer to play on TPV servers but state they don't because of self interest in appearing hardcore. Your arguments have been laughable. "Well, people play on TPV so they must like it." AKA "Ad Hominem Tu Quoque" fallacy. Note that bold part. We can state we would prefer to play FPV and not play FPV and still retain that preference. Why we don't play on those servers has no bearing on what we want to play. In fact if I were to come out and say, "I would prefer to play in FPV but TPV is just so much easier." I would still have every right to lobby for the SA to be only FPV. How many people know beyond a doubt that they should make something healthy and cheaper for dinner but still decided to just order a pizza because it is easier if not better? Thousands of them. In fact I think delivery pizza shops only remain in business because in general the populous is lazy. ;) So what I actually choose to do when it comes to play does not invalidate any arguments about how I think FPV would improve the game and claiming otherwise is just arguing poorly. -

Zeds agro based on seeing and hearing you. Ignore hearing because neither mode changes how much noise you make. In FPV you can not see a Zed if it doesn't have at least a chance of seeing you. This is not true for TPV. In that view you can see Zeds around corners and they can not see you. Ergo, Zeds have a greater chance of agroing against FPV players who have to actually risk agro to see the Zeds. You keep stating that it isn't different but having to expose yourself to view and agro to view the zeds and where they are going HAS to cause more cases of agro. Logic dictates that. TPV able to view zeds and determine where they are going and facing with 0% chance of aggro or FPV where you have at least a chance of aggro from being seen. This is a very basic concept, any positive number is greater than 0. -

It goes beyond campers as I have stated numerous times in this thread. They are the most egregious exploit but not the only. Zombies don't get TPV making it really unfair against them. Sure they are NPCs but if Mr. Hall wants the focus to be on zombies and not just on other players removing the ability to exploit your view and see them without risking them seeing you is just as bad. Risk vrs Reward. Knowledge is power, it is important. In a game like this where one mistake can lead to death and having to start over knowing what is around and making informed decisions is key. TPV lets you gain a large amount of knowledge for very little risk. It violently skews Risk vrs Reward in the direction of very little risk. Frankly it dumbs the game down. This is not only an opinion, but an opinion based off of thought and valid arguments. -

Yeah it is an opinion. What is your point? Oh wait, do you think that opinions are never wrong? :D -
VIRUS! No known antibiotic can cure ANY virus. Antibiotics cure Bacterial infections... like the ones you get from cuts and scrapes... Eating contaminated food... drinking contaminated water.

Fact: Developer stated there were exploits in TPV. Not an opinion of mine even though I agree. -
You were wrong because you didn't know how to read the code. Just admit it and move on before you embarrass yourself.

You forgot that it sometimes turns into, "Whoever ends up between two players gets shot." since the outside players can keep a piece of cover while watching for the other one to move and can tell when the inside one is not looking their way so they can risk sticking enough out to shoot. Without TPV they would still have a slight advantage but they would have to risk putting eyes on the middle player and might miss his moving or not realize he has a gun pointing right at the spot they are going to peek from. :) ARMA II has a pretty hand "lean" feature that works wonderfully. I miss it in other games. -
How do I say this nicely... "You are wrong." Example of someone who gets enough food but not enough of the right food... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwashiorkor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scurvy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xerophthalmia

It is more the optic systems that do it for me. I like the CCO and ACOG systems and so guns with those are preferred.

Which is them being in the same boat. Friends and associates as well as other players insist on going with the easier route and eventually we follow suit to join them. If you were looking for the possibility of encountering other players would you join a server with 2 people or one with 12? Server populations tend to have critical mass so that once one goes over 5 people start joining it, once it passes 20 more and more flock to it. Since it is common to find 5 people who want to play a slightly easier version of the game than it is to find 5 that want to play a slightly harder version that means a lot. -

The issue is that as long as there is an easy route and and a harder route the majority of the people will pick easy. The fact that they will then complain when things get boring or too easy is just ironic icing on the cake. TPV is just easier to play in, not more realistic or making up for a lack of awareness in FPV, it lets you look around corners without exposing yourself and makes the game easier against zombies. It makes it harder against camping players, but I don't think that balances out in the right way. The player base being divided IS the issue. If I played alone it wouldn't be that much of an issue for me, but I have friends and they want the easier route and so to play with them I have to go to the easy route and play where the exploits are allowed and make use of them and lower my enjoyment of the game. -
You CAN survive for months by eating bananas and drinking water, but you are going to have some issues that will come with it. I'm not describing first world issues I am describing THIRD WORLD issues. You probably don't realize how much food is stocked up around people and how much of it is actually "non-perishable". We are not talking about 20 years from the outbreak but more like a month or two after it. There should be cans and boxes of food especially if the infection spread fast so that people didn't have a ton of time to eat what was stocked.

No, it's still a 1% chance but you can be that lucky/unlucky since every event happens in isolation from other events.
-
You are falling into what is called "Gambler's Fallacy". This is the belief that statistics have any bearing on the outcome of a random event. While it is unlikely that if you rolled a die that you might roll a 1 ten times in a roll and it is statistically unlikely, it is not impossible for it to happen. Each random event happens with it's own chance not based upon any preceding events. In other words, "With each hit there is a 1% chance no matter how many times prior that 1% happened."

How is finding ingredients and crafting a meal unauthentic? How is drinking nothing but soda being bad for you unauthentic? Things like Soup will give you calories and fluid back, lots of calories and some fluid. Things like soda will give you lots of fluid and some calories. This is more authentic.

Item damage in Dayz SA looks dumb...
mercules replied to scaramoosh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes, but he didn't need feedback on what he already knew and admitted right then and there, "I might have to play with the numbers a bit, but you get the concept." It wasn't a presentation on how it was going to stay. It was a presentation that showed they had added the feature to the game and what it would do with an admission that it hadn't been tweaked at all. Shoes degrade. They degrade faster in poor conditions with heavy use. You should be really happy that shoes magically resize themselves and you don't have to wander around trying to find a pair that is your size. Clothes are no longer just decoration or camo, they have other functions. Notice there were raincoats in a recent video. He can set raincoats and heavier clothing to slow down heat loss. Clothing items contain storage. They are gear as much as cosmetics now, which is what it should be. On top of that gear wearing out means you no longer have the idea that you can get X, Y, Z and then go off into the woods and survive forever which does get dull and then translate into "Maybe I'll go shoot someone." and now when shooting someone can ruin the gear they have you can no longer just gear up by letting others take the risks and shooting them as the leave Cherno. So now you might actually have to play DayZ and search for gear. -
One of the things he mentioned was that your diet was going to become important. Eat nothing but beans and you might end up sick from lack of protein. Eat nothing but beef steak and over time you will develop issues from an all protein diet. Drink tons of soda and no water and maybe you suffer from something like diabetes. So grabbing 4 cans of something won't be good enough. If you watch the gameplay there is flour and other things which in combo with the crafting system means we will probably have recipes for making different foods. So instead of looking for another can of beans you might be looking for something citric so you can avoid scurvy.

Maybe you should read the Wiki for Epoch. It's probably a server setting so either play on a different server or if you own it go figure the settings out, they have a section on configuring that sort of thing. In other words, RtFM.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)

When you say FPS are you talking about team deathmatch with random spawn points or deathmatch FPS games or something with actual tactics? Playing BF3 on the large conquest maps with limited vehicle spawns means you often have to stay hidden. Back when I played Battlefield: Vietnam and played on the VC side of things there were times where my sniper rifle was iron sights and I had things like Bouncing Betties. I once held a point pretty much by myself against 4 or 5 assaulting at a time and helicopters because of stealth. I was able to deal with a few coming up and when things got overwhelming I faded into hiding, only picked off people looking the wrong way, and retook the point once they moved on. Stealth can be VERY important in FPS. Mechwarrior Online, keeping in cover until you have flanked is incredibly important. So important one of the most useful items in the game is a seismic sensor that lets you see close range movement on your radar even behind obstacles. If your target can't see you, they can't shoot you. One of the most important things in a FPS.
