Very easily, some of us have years of experience anticipating game releases and watching development teams either miss dates or presenting an unfinished product just to make such dates that we have come to understand that a release date isn't a solid date or actually relevant to when the software will actually be done. We also realize that a release data on a very unfinished alpha is kinda silly. Some of us work in the software publishing business and have seen the process in action and understand that it is more common for those dates to get pushed back than from them to be met and so already know that it will get done when it gets done. Now a very generous late release date to give them more time than they will ever need falls under the principle you are quoting and so is a bad idea, as is one that causes them to cram things together haphazard or publish late. So really the "win" scenario for them is, "Be patient and we will release it as soon as we think it is ready."

This is why they will be wrapped in Concrete Walls. I suppose I should have mentioned a Locked door. :) -
Servers with 3rd person disabled
mercules replied to petermann2's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I will probably switch my Epoch Server over to 1st person once we get the core of our base built. Right now it is 3rd person because it is nearly impossible to line up things properly in FPV only. It is based in Chicago though, so that might not work for you ping-wise. -
I think you are confusing an External Release Date with not having any sort of deadlines. I am certain internally they have each laid out what will be completed before the next time they compile the code and attempt to stick to those. What is happening though is they are not telling us because frankly we really don't need to know.

DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?
mercules replied to neosky5k's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The ignorance of simple biology astounds me. First people think anti-biotics will cure viral infections now they think animals see exactly the same as humans. I'm dumbfounded. My 11-year-old knows this stuff. There is light out there, but human eyes can only do so much. The reason many animals operate at night is because they have specifically evolved to be nocturnal and operate in light conditions that would leave a human blind. In addition while we can adapt to the light and see well enough to move around in extremely dim light we can no longer focus. Cones which detect color are densely packed in the focal area of our retina which allows us very clear color vision in normal light conditions. This area has fewer rods. As we have less and less light the Cones stop being able to function but the Rods still can for a while. The issue is that as I said, the focal area does not have as many Rods. So sometimes you can see something in the dark out of the corner of your eye but when you look at it directly you can no longer see it because there are not enough Rods in the focal area to process it. So night vision is really good at detecting motion but not very good for precise things. It would be great if they could capture that in a video game. Oh, and again this is not a bad design feature for a "HORROR ZOMBIE SURVIVAL SIM". Running around in the dark wondering if you are going to die seems like a really good thing for that game. -

What an awesome argument and/or discussion. It ranks up there with: "Is too!" "Na uh!" "Is too!" "Na uh!" "Is too!" "Na uh!" "Is too!" "Na uh!" "Is too!" "Na uh!" "Is too!" "Na uh!" -

No, I understand it. The issue is not the game where the developers have given people plenty of tools, Flashlights, weapons with flashlights on them, NV Scopes, NV Goggles, Flares, Campfires, various Glow Sticks with different range, Full Moon nearly always. The issue is the players giving up without trying. The game gives you the tools and is a lot of fun if you actually use them instead of just pronouncing the game broken and deciding it is too hard. At night Zed risk goes down but Player risk goes up. Looting out of the way towns is excellent at night but you always run the risk that you will run into other players and give your position away with too much light or not notice the other player with too little light. Harder does not equal a problem or broken, it equals lazy or clueless players seeking easier solutions and labeling it broken. -

Sorry, autocorrect changed "cheating" to "checking" on me. I was basically saying that anyone who thought it was "Hunt for Antibiotics" needed to learn how to play the game. -
Why wouldn't it? Not like you can't turn the game off or playing the game wasn't voluntary. Add in a EULA line or two and they would be golden.

mercules replied to timedance's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well, there were actually people who played and managed to figure out how to survive without checking, but that means you have to actually play the game and not throw up your hands in defeat. -
Off Topic, don't multi-post across multiple threads.

The thing is you are incorrect, some of us enjoy playing in the dark and think the rest of you are just a little to whiny about it. So your "nobody" is actually, "Not me." and your "Bad Gameplay Decision" issue is actually "I'm afraid of the dark so I cower instead of learning how to play. " issue. -
dayz epoch deployable motorbike
mercules replied to sincerecorn's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's not a Epoch mod feature. I've been slowly customizing an Epoch server for what my groups wants, adding AI around Trader cities, trying to add in a logistics system, and some other simple things. Deployable Motor bikes are not in the base mod or I wouldn't be giving myself headaches trying to get it to work and not break my server. -
How to make a Huey unflyable... srsly, how?
mercules replied to FuckNut's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Depending on the chopper it isn't all that hard. I grabbed a Little Bird less than a week ago from an area which had no tail rotor function. Take off straight up spinning until you get enough height and then rock it out and you can get enough control to fly around. Landing is the hard part. You need a clear and flat area, bring it in fast and bleed speed at the last second. Usually you come down hard enough you damage other things but if you can get it away from a contested area to an area where maybe you have supplies to repair it that rough landing can be worth it. -

I am going to build several Sheds which hold a good deal of gear for the less important things, wrap them in concrete walls with a locked door. That way I can have a lot of storage for a lot cheaper than multiple safes. I will still have safes for a few choice pieces of gear. -
It happens and it sucks. 6 tents in one area was somewhat asking for it. For a lot of fun, grab what is really important to you then advertise the location of your camp to the server on a busy night. Make sure you are like, "I found a ton of tents at:" It should create some chaos and your gear did something.

DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?

Yes, we are able to feel their environment. I get that. In fact I know what you are talking about. I can wander down a hallway and sense door openings I pass. I still can't sense objects at 200 meters which I can do with vision. We don't trip over small branches in DayZ and fall on our faces. That takes care of the sensing our surroundings. You do NOT know where you step. Go walk around in a dark woods at night, you run a large risk of spraining an ankle if not worse. In a dark house where you have been and know the layout, you have some idea, but not in the woods. Even in pitch black in DayZ we can run full bore and only have a small risk of running down a steep hill and breaking a leg. No tripping and such. Get over that. You have heard the phrase, "So dark I couldn't see my hand in front of my face."? That comes from something, that being that without light you can't see. In fact in low light that many animals can see in Humans lack enough Rods to absorb enough light to make out much at night. What they can make out is often very low resolution due to where the rods are located in our eyes and them needing enough light stimulation to fire and notify our brains. I get the feeling you really haven't been out in the wilderness on a rainy night with no moon and no local lighting. -
Ugh! Why bother playing. I play Epoch too but I kill cows, cook the meat, and try not to eat it unless I'm starving because traders will give me two silver for 6 steaks. If you just start out with enough to completely gear up with the best equipment as well as a gun... what is the point?

When it is partially cloudy and stars out you can see pretty well, about what you would see in a location without much light pollution and semi cloudy skies. If the moon is out and bright, even an overcast night can have a general glow that is enough to see by. When the moon is not out, and it is overcast, which means the sky is completely covered in clouds, it is black and dark where there is no light pollution. Now, where most people live these days there is so much light pollution that the night never really is all that dark and cloudy nights can actually be brighter from reflected light pollution. Get out in the hinterlands, not just out of town, but out in the empty parts of the world and you will see how dark night can get. Most of Chernarus is lacking lights and so you would have to get pretty far away from everything to be able to compare and see how accurate it is. Then again most of us don't go out into that dark without a light anylonger and would have no idea. -

RTFM Read The F'n Manual That is the short answer. The long answer is: Do an extensive search for the logistics mods for ARMA II and figure out how to implement them into your private Epoch server by reading and learning instead of asking pointless questions. -
You mean like "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later" the movies the Zeds in DayZ are based off of? What they have is a variant of the Ebola Virus engineered into the "Rage" virus. Still a virus. This isn't "Night of the Comet" radioactive dust zombies, Romero zombies, Resident Evil zombies, or the horrible "Return of the Living Dead" zombies. Heck, these are not even "I Zombie" zombies. It's okay if you don't understand modern medicine or that disease is not caused by "evil spirits" but actually microscopic organisms that enter the body and might be bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic in nature and that the treatment off all of them requires different means. It's okay if you don't get that antibiotics don't cure the common cold or flu. Just admit it.

Will Dayz SA spend a year of development not fixing the two main issues from Dayz?

What the hell are you doing to your poor computer? My computer is just slightly less powerful than yours without a SSD and I get 40 FPS steadily and go up to 50-60 in empty areas. -

Why exactly are all you people talking about playing in the pitch black? I have heard people say things like, "Crap! Nothing but flares." or "Empty tin cans and Glow Sticks? This sucks." Yeah, it isn't like finding another clip for your gun but it isn't trash if you actually challenge yourself and play at night. A carried Blue Chemlight will let you see your immediate surroundings and won't be overtly noticeable at range. At best until close you see a blue point.Once really close it is all but impossible to miss the bright glowing person. You are at disadvantage against someone with NVGs but that makes sense since you can find blue chemlights everywhere and NVGs are pretty rare. G17 has a flashlight attached which is excellent for quick peeks when in cover like a dark interior and if you don't mind using a shotgun the Remington 870 can work like this as well. "But someone might be watching me with NVGs and shoot me while I skulk around." Um, yeah, that is true but that is also the point. Stick to cover so you don't get sniped, keep the engagement ranges low by sticking to crowded areas and you can whip out a flare or with the guns I mentioned above flick on the flashlight and blind those people, as long as they are close. With big towns I will sometimes throw some flares out the side of the town to attract zombies that way and also put a light barrier between me and anyone shooting into town. Honestly, some of the people who won't play at night... They give you all the tools to get around at night. If you are scared of dying you shouldn't be playing DayZ. -
Something tells me someone is playing on an Epoch server. :)
