How do you enter town safely as a lone wolf?
mercules replied to Donair's topic in New Player Discussion
This... If you spawn near one of the big ones you might as well make a quick run through and hope. You do this as a fresh spawn because, what do you have to lose? If you are already pretty geared up don't go to Cherno/Elektro/Balota alone. Hit the smaller towns/deer stands/castles. You are less likely to run into snipers in such places although you might run into other people. -
Well, the "Rage" virus in "28 Days Later" is based off Ebola. The Infected eventually starved to death 60 days later. There is a leap of faith we have to make. The infection from "Quarentine" was an engineered version of Rabies and we never did get to see the long term results of it since both movies took place in less than 24 hours. Rabies however creates Hydrophobia and so "Rabid Zombies" would likely die of dehydration in a few days.

Rabies has "flu like symptoms". Here is a video of a man with rabies in the last stages of the disease: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEKpZzUpO4E

I really hate this zombe chain knock out and they do so much damage
mercules replied to TheWizard14's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Actually, it sounds like the bandit had a bunch of zombie agro thus the shots coming from him. Our OP then shot the bandit removing him as a possible agro source and creating a brand new one with all the noise he made. The zombies that were agro'd then switched to the OP who was apparently unaware of them. In other words he got tunnel vision as soon as he saw the other player. This happens to the best of us, but most of us realize it and blame our own stupidity when we die because of it. -

A Heart for the Lonewolfs (Health system discussion!)
mercules replied to m.cab's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So you are saying there is a reason not to shoot everyone you see? This will not do... we need to stomp out any reason to actually play with other people. :P -
I'm of mixed opinion on these. Some are really bad, some are okay. I like Vanilla, but there are times I want to do something else. This would be why I am currently running an Epoch server. I want to build a base but I don't want it to be player housing that you can't break into like Origins, I want it to be destructible given enough effort, but still want to be able to "secure" it. In other words I want the placement and planning to count. This isn't a horrible thing that pulls it too far away from DayZ. Yes, I can stockpile things and they can be locked away but really a Base Base becomes a target and a place for people to camp. It adds a different element to the whole game without pulling it too far afield. Well, and friggin cinderblocks are hard to loot with the Real Weight system in place. You put a bunch of effort into building a base, get a small bit of security from it and then need to work on maintaining it. Things like Breaking Point where they put more guns in and simply bumped up the zombies to try and compensate and then threw in a few buggy things like Bloodsuckers just don't capture DayZ very well. There was just too much loot and having to kill 20 zombies at a helicopter crash didn't mean a thing when you could find a couple vehicles with 50 cal machine guns on them or blaze away with a DMR based battle rifle and find an ammo box at nearly every crash site with 10 DMR mags in it. The Helo crashes were so common that you could spawn the zombies from one while looting another. Tons of loot at Devil's castle, extra barracks, NEAF more loot than NWAF on vanilla. It was just way to easy to gear up and that made it dull. There are mods that add to vanilla. Auto Refuel isn't a horrible thing and saves you minutes of tedium filling jerry cans and emptying them. Depending on the script it can take almost as long as using multiple jerry cans for most vehicles. My friend was trying out new servers and hopped on one all inocent. I joined him and while we were trying to meet up he found himself a MORTAR in a deerstand. I want to know who hunts with a mortar? :)

With this new Choose Spawn feature, Dayz Turned into CoD
mercules replied to TheWizard14's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I do not have a rough idea of where I am. I see the little text come up and see Kamenka. I glance left and right and now know if I am on the West or East side of it and where to go from there. Same thing for each city I can spawn near. I can narrow down my spawn point on an external map to about 10 meters by only moving 10 meters to get a look around. All this has done is allowed me to start somewhere NEAR a certain town, the point is still random. I don't want a game that is quick and easy, but the other thing I don't want is to have an hour and a half to spend online playing with a friend and to spend that whole hour and a half just running to a location where we can meet up and gathering a tiny bit of food and drink and maybe a weapon on the way there. Yes on a busy server it can take that long to meet up as you will often run into some bandit that spawned near you who got to the pistol/hatchet/Enfield first. So now you get to run from a different area and the meet up spot is now further away than before. The number of time I have spawned in Kamenka and my friend in Elektro, we have run to meet in Nadezhino and then maybe move on to Zub from there. I get past Bor and hitting the deerstands on the way get shot with an M16/M4/AK looted from Balota and then end up at Three Rivers. Now my friend has to spin around and start heading back in the opposite direction to meet me and a half hour of play time is pretty much wasted. The game is a lot more interesting and fun with others and pretty boring alone. -

With this new Choose Spawn feature, Dayz Turned into CoD
mercules replied to TheWizard14's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Technically you already know exactly where you are unless you purposefully look away when the game tells you where you spawned. That hint and a quick scan will tell nearly anyone where they are precisely on the map. What it does do is allow myself and 2-3 other friends hop onto a server and log in for the first time and all be at the same location instead of one in Kamenka and one in Solnichny with the third and fourth in Prigorodky wondering if they should head West, East, or just go North to meet up with the others. -
DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?
mercules replied to neosky5k's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
One might argue that those are not "DayZ Players" despite the fact they are playing DayZ. ;) Even without NVGs my group of friends, while not preferring to play at night don't insist on a daylight server but will log into night ones. We also avoid the "500+ vehicles", "Gunz-Gunz-Gunz", and "donate for a starter pack" servers. -
How to make a Huey unflyable... srsly, how?
mercules replied to FuckNut's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've done it with a Huey and left the engine orange but usable, no glass left in the thing though. :) Never bothered to try with the Mi-17 that thing is a pig WITH a tail rotor. -
No one wants to nerf the guns. They want a different set of equipment that is non-lethal. Some of us are working on or have Hero skins. We are working hard not to kill people and help others out but are stymied by the fact that some of the non-friendlies will be people without bandit skins and we would really like a means to deal with them. I would run around with a tranq gun and a pistol. Pistol to clean out zombies, tranq to deal with unruely players that I don't want to outright kill. My friends would have more lethal solutions and we would work together to clear out threats with the appropriate amount of lethality. I wouldn't risk having nothing but a non-lethal gun but I don't have to risk that because I have friends and a pistol. I played in Breaking Point where you start off with a Tazer as your weapon. Three shots and while they won't kill a zombie or player they will stun them long enough for you to get away. That thing has saved my life in the past and meant I didn't have to kill someone I didn't want to. I later found the upgraded tazer with three shots per clip so I was carrying around 12 tazer charges. It worked pretty well as a sidearm and something like that in Vanilla DayZ wouldn't be wanted by many people but would be fun for others.

Yes, I get that. I've also mentioned it several times in other threads that when the game is too simple people get what they need and then go, "What's next?" and the default for many is to shoot other players. I've pointed out that third person view makes avoiding zombies trivial and looting easier getting people to that state sooner. I've pointed out that 24/7 servers with no night time where the risk is increased and players slowed down have allowed them to get to the point they have what they need and go, "What's next?". Oddly enough players tend to flock to those easier settings thus getting to the "What's next?" quicker. So yes, it is players fault. They see a goal of owning the best gun and NVGs and take whatever quick route they can to that goal, hit that goal, and then are stuck with, "What's next?" and moving on to shooting others which is still easier than trying to help others or befriend others. So again, players want to take the easy route and then complain that it is the GAME'S fault they are at what they see as the end of it with nothing to do.

Does anyone else think the tractor is hilarious?
mercules replied to Jex's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No it doesn't. If I could get a second person on the bicycle or at least store a few items on it, I would use that vehicle all the time. It goes about as fast as most other vehicles off road, decent enough on road, is quiet and small letting you get in and out of places quickly and easily. Only bad part is zombies seem to agro on bicycles faster than they do on things like cars. The fact that it takes no gas is perfect since you can cut cross country without worrying about where your next fuel stop is. -
DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?
mercules replied to neosky5k's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Except you are lacking any evidence he stated it was a stupid feature. I looked for a bit but decided I didn't need to since I wasn't the one trying to use what he stated as an argument. I don't need to search out your evidence backing your claims and until you do it will be ignored as valid. -
I see you missed the link to the seller of tranquilizer guns. They are working on encouraging farmers to use that equipment for more difficult animals to work with. If you have a huge ill tempered bull you are keeping around for breeding purposes but you need to do some work on it, say it tore up it's leg and needs some stitches, tranq-ing it from a distance seems a lot more reasonable than trying to approach a possibly violent animal in pain. I mean we find all kinds of shotguns and rifles in barns, even crossbows. A tranq-gun wouldn't be unreasonable.

mercules replied to TheWizard14's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Why are people who don't enjoy KoS complaining? Don't spawn in Elektro/Cherno/Balota choose one of the other locations since the majority of the CoD wanna-be play will be happening around those other three you can now avoid it by going elsewhere. -
Not to be insulting, but did you happen to not have a Hunting Knife at the time?

DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?
mercules replied to neosky5k's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When stand alone is released the Mod is history. Till then it is DayZ and relevant to the discussion. Now, to humor you, I have not seen where Dean stated he was changing the light level for the SA and it is possible I missed it. could you point me to the quote or a video with a timestamp for the statement? -
What an awesome argument loaded with supporting statements as to how you came to that conclusion. I am totally convinced.

Far NE corner of the map? Across the bay? :P

Does anyone else think the tractor is hilarious?
mercules replied to Jex's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think maybe they fixed ATVs and no one is brave enough to try them. I haven't found them tippy in a while. I know Tractors go red pretty easily, but I don't make it a habit of hitting things in any vehicle so I typically avoid that issue, especially since Tractors are good off road and I can avoid narrow lanes between buildings with debris blocking up the way. :) It does mow down Zeds pretty well. I was once able to loot a couple deerstands because I rode up to them in the tractor and ran the zombies over. Needless to say I was hoping for a weapon of some sort in one of them. Finally got a machete. :) -
DayZ Community afraid of the Dark?
mercules replied to neosky5k's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's not really subjective, there is a valid objective discussion going on about night time on the Mod. Why are we talking about the Mod? Because that is what we are playing and what is actually relevant today. Notice the topic didn't say, "Will people play during the nighttime on the SA?". Heck YOU spent several pages having a reasonable discussion about the mod. Suddenly though you only care about something we are not even able to accurately judge because I don't think either of us have had a chance to play SA at night with all the loot and crafting enabled? The topic was not about what WILL be but what currently is and why players don't play in the dark. You started out that way and I have to agree with some of the conclusions you came to but a few of your premises are just flawed such as people actually seeing in the absence of light and how much light is available on a moonless overcast night away from a city's light pollution, then suddenly you want to switch topics. A suspicious man might think you have lost faith in your other argument but can't admit you are wrong and so what to shift over to something you think you can be more right about. -
My actions break down like this when I spot other players. My team outnumbers the players I have spotted - notify others and keep an eye on the one I have spotted until they have eyes on them. Once they have eyes I switch to scanning for other possible hotiles. My team is fewer than the other players I have spotted - notify team and prepare to lay down covering fire while they exfiltrate the area. Vehicle incoming on my team - Notify team, have them take cover, try to keep eyes on vehicle and determine how many potential hostile are in it. Bandit Skin - Overrides above, notify team, try to spot other hostiles while finding my shot on visible target. Survivor skin - Normal protocols watch for suspicious actions like laying down on the hospital/firetower. Try to determine weapon and threat level. If acting hostile and carrying high threat weapon shoot first. If carrying say a shotgun/pistol, wait but keep eyes on them. Hero skin - Little more trust here, notify team and let them reach out and make contact with hero. Watch for other hostiles. If I get approached while on overwatch or running around alone: 1. Skin? Bandit = Shoot/Hack 2. Hero = communicate... that doesn't mean trust them, just initiate communication and be slightly wary 3. Survivor = observe, if they spot me try to make quick friendly contact but don't hesitate if they make threatening gestures to fire. Running right at me with a hatchet out is probably not a good idea. My friend had to inform someone of that after I blasted them... as the guy lay on the ground bleeding out. We bandaged him, blood bagged him, and then dropped Morphine in a loot pile in a nearby barn and got out of there while he crawled to it.
