So my friend wanted to find a new game to "hang out" in online. This is who we keep in touch now that we live a bit further from each other. He mentioned he was thinking about DayZ and asked if I would be interested. Well, I had seen DayZ on Ctrl+Alt+Del and watched videos from when it first came out. Yeah I was interested but I was always a bit hesitant to play the game on my own. So he downloaded it and played for a couple days before I got paid and bought ARMA II. He didn't have a great loadout, but he had a gun and I didn't so we worked to meet up. First life I agro'd a zombie and got hit. I finally lost it and was able to bandage myself. Then I got hit again running into a yard with a fence and not being able to hop over it before I got smacked. I bled out while running. Life take two, Agro'd a large mob of zombies and died running into a house hoping for a pistol and finding out it had no other door. Take three, Yes I got a Hatchet! Oh and we are almost in the same town. I am kiling zombies! ......... and I'm unconscious.. they are eating me... Take four we met up despite me spawning even further away. It was night now and we are working slowly through the city crawling and ducking into cover and avoiding zombies. Without gaining agro we finally find me a shotgun. Didn't get a pistol for several weeks but I did get a map and another hatchet. We spend the whole time being paranoid about other players, here distant shots but never see anyone, slowly work our way through a truly dark night, and avoid zombies. It was so much fun. We got lost, found ourselves on the map again, stumbled into a town trying to run through and loot it but with no enterable buildings we just end up pulling a huge mob down on us and running after snatching some food and drink. Back to Cherno since there are now fewer people on and in the firehall I find myself a genuine DMR. I then do overwatch for my friend and a few others that end up joining us. That couple of weeks when the game was fresh was great. We ran into bandits, friends died but I got one with the DMR and my other friends shot a different one with M4A1s they had just looted from Stary. I learn that certain surfaces will break your bones or let you fall through the map and lose your precious DMR and Ghillie suit. :)

Please bring back Pitch Black Nights and Lunar Cycle!!!!

Got a nice little pleasant "Auauaagh!" followed by frantic firing from my friend the other night. Apparently he wasn't aware of one of the zombies until it entered his blue glowstick's light range right in his face. -
Best settings for spotting people

Imagine some people went out and bought computers that can run this game at 60FPS in town with the settings all the way up. ;) -
Whats your ideal server population?
mercules replied to Karmaterror's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Depends on what I am doing. When I am looting alone I prefer <12. With a couple of friends 30+. Hunting bandits 50+. -
Does knowing how to read a topographic map help you?
mercules replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How would a topographical map NOT be helpful? Unless you have the area so memorized you don't need the map at all. -
*facepalm* You wouldn't actually spend 16 gold bars on 120 Stanag clips. It was an example. Look... my first experience with Epoch was thus: I had spawned near Electro and it wasn't terribly busy on the server so I went for it. I hit the hospital, corner store, school, church, and both firehalls. I came away with an AK Kobra and a regular AK for the highlights. I also had decent sized backpack Makrov, and assorted tools. I had antibiotics, a blood bag in case a friend joined me, bunch of painkillers and a single morphine. With the food and drink I hit a few other things and started making my way towards the Trader city Klen. Fill in assorted close calls and mishaps and I had used up the morphine and was down to about 10 shots for the AK. I was at the point where I was clearing zombies with a machete and both guns were in my backpack. I was hacking my way through a couple zombies to check the deerstand near Black Mountain when a zombie broke my leg for the second time that night. I managed to kill him and loot the deerstand but then had to crawl all the way to Klen. I was down to Mystery can of food ate it and was promptly infected. So I was crawling, in the dim light of twilight, infected and cold and just hoping I would get to the traders in time. I managed to make it, had to trade the AK for antibiotics, traded in some extra food for a spare mag for the Kobra. Dumped the Lee Enfield rounds I had for a hatchet which I was missing. Finally I went out, found an animal and killed it and got a bit of blood back. I then vacated the area. Later on I came back and traded some mags for other mags and some medical supplies. That kinda hooked me. On some Epoch servers it is fairly easy to make money. On others not so much. This is like it being easy to find NVGs on a server with extra barracks or customer loot tables compared to Vanilla. On the servers I like to play on vehicles are not EVERYWHERE and so you don't make a ton of money very quickly but you can find a Stanag mag and trade it away for an AK mag or the antibiotics you need. Edit: I almost forgot to mention. Base building is a pretty large money and time sink. You might be able to buy Stanag rounds or an ATV but you will need them because you will want to loot Cinder Blocks to build a base. One wall section takes 2 mortal buckets and 7 cinderblock piles and that is a hell of a lot of weight. So your money ends up being saved up for a vehicle and then things like Plot Poles so people can't just build over your wall or remove your built items, and such.

Yes.. those heavy 1 OUNCE bars. 16 of them make up a pound. We definitely don't carry around a full pound of things in DayZ... ever... Not fully loaded Stanag clips which weigh in about a pound. Yes.. instead of 16 gold bars which can buy 120 Stanag clips I'll just lug around 120 pounds worth of Stanag clips.

If it is on Epoch I am willing to bet it is one of the ones with all kinds of added scripts. My friend found a MORTAR in a deerstand and the server was just so ridiculous I had to try it. All the additional scripts bugged out hatchets, crowbars, and some other toolbelt item you then couldn't pick up... In any case the solution was to not play on that server because you could never pick up a crowbar. Luckily you started with a shotgun so you didn't need an axe to fight off zombies.

Mining for iron silver and GOLD
mercules replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
No, it's just more crafting. Chester_le, check out the Epoch forums instead. You need to find an ore rock which appear in random locations like Helicopter spawns. Then you need to break down the ore and gather up the pieces. Then you will need a fire and full water bottles and you will be able to smelt the ore into whatever metal it is. The Iron can be used to make Scrap Metal(which is used in other crafting) and the silver/gold can be given to traders for goods. Not my favorite addition but it does get people searching around the map for things just like the random supply drops, helicopter crashes, and mass graves. -
You can have multiples. I have an Epoch Server without self blood bag and 1000+ vehicles and such for when we want something to do. We are constructing a base there and the mod really fits my loot whore friend's style of play where he gathers everything. I play Vanilla just because it is fun and difficult. I also play Origins alone because I wanted to try a map I hadn't played on so when no one else is logged on I will sometimes wander over to there and just run around exploring.

So.. you mean barter then... Barter: to trade by exchanging one commodity for another There is a reason currency systems develop in all kinds of cultures because barter systems DON'T WORK.
-
PS. No, the game is called "Left 4 Dead". Oh and... NECROTHREAD!
-
No, no... correct me. I actually WANT to know where there are some in out of the way places. The ones I know of are: In Factory areas - where large numbers of players loot to find parts for cars In Military areas - where large numbers of players loot to find weapons In Cherno - where large numbers of players loot In Elektro - where large numbers of players loot I mean I am typically a deerstand and out of the way barn looter for essentials and might hit a large city at night when the population is low but otherwise avoid them. Vague, "There are a lot more." is all good and fine but a "Check (small town x) sometime, you might be surprised." would be even better. :)

Please bring back Pitch Black Nights and Lunar Cycle!!!!
mercules replied to beavis_5000's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I hate full moon nights. On my private server we introduced a player to DayZ and did so at night. Moon was about a quarter and was out from behind the clouds for about a 1/4 of our play time. We had to use chemlights, flares, weapons with flashlights and such. I really enjoyed playing that way again. With full moon nights most people just turn up the gamma and it's like black and white NVGs... I hate it. -
Yes, but you must admit that most of them are in locations where I would not want to go when low on blood. :) They are in locations I would go into fully healed and well armed... maybe with backup.
-
There are more than 4 spawn locations for blood bags and the medical boxes contain multiples of them when they spawn. They also can spawn at helicopter crashes if you don't want to risk a town.

"all over" is a relative term. I know of a few in Cherno and maybe in Elektro... those are right out for a visit to cook meat. Also some military areas spawn them... but the point is that where there are oil barrels that can be lit there are not only zombies, but players that really like to shoot other players. Lighting an Oil Barrel is a sure way to attract attention and a bullet. I'll stick to my wilderness areas where I can try and quietly deal with small amounts of zombies(sneak past many of them) and mostly avoid other players while I am below 1/2 health. As for the wood, I get that and agree. My issue is that there are times in the game where you are standing in a substantial amount of trees with the "forest" ground cover, basically what looks to qualify but it doesn't qualify. Alternately there are times you can harvest wood with no tree even near you. The qualifying ground sometimes seems a bit arbitrary.
-
My favorite is having raw meat and water bottles I filled with water... a tin can, matches, hatchet, all that... and the game keeps telling me, "You must be in a forest and near a tree to gather firewood." Hey game, dark ground, lots of trees, this big tree right here... how is this not meeting the requirements? :) I guess I'll risk infection, eat and drink, then run over there and see if THAT counts as forest.

Because the people who need to understand this don't go and read those articles? If you don't inject discussions about equality into their everyday lives and thought streams then they just never consider them. Not that you should shove it down their throats at each opportunity, but when the subject comes up even in a round about way you should discuss it. Otherwise some people who would never consider it will never be exposed to it.

I am missing matches currently on my character in Vanilla. The last few runs I have done to find them have included 35+ possible spawn points for matches not including 3 deer stands where the chance of it dropping Matches goes up to slightly over 6%. I've run that path probably 8 times over the last week and have not found matches. However I have 6 bloodbags because raiding a hospital is not all that hard when it's dark and the population is lower. So whoever states "You can eat Beefsteak just as easily." is being a bit obtuse... it's not all that simple.

Will hackers really be subdued in SA? Not likely.
mercules replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The scripts can be written easily... they can't be injected however because the server is going to be all: Server: "Give me an update on what your player is doing." Client: "Well he is accessing his bzrrrrt&^%#*^&% - Spawn Helicopter." Server: *laughing* "Ah... I remember the days I had to listen to you. Those were hilarious days... but seriously what is he doing?" -
Yes, but that isn't a barter system now is it? That is a currency system. Which you JUST stated....

mercules replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Many of the existing hacks... and lag... exists in the DayZ mod because ArmA II updates every client with every thing that changes. My machine doesn't need to know that your character was just given a bloodbag when you are in Berinzino and I am in Cherno. On top of that the mod was open to scripts including ones run client side. With the majority of things running server side you will see a lot less scripts being functional from the client end of things. This whole network bubble they are working on is going to limit what information our client gets so there will be less "ESP" available and a less hooks for scripts to work with. -

So how many Stanag rounds is a can of beans worth? Oh, but we can't divide up the clips in this game so here is 10 cans of beans. Oh you don't have enough inventory for that? ...and 7 cans of beans spew all over the floor. They had to do some sort of monetary system and they didn't want it to be ethereal coins that no one can rob from you. I got attacked by a guy and killed him and he had 2 gold bars in his backpack. Now I have two gold bars in my backpack. I have to lug the damn things around but it gives me a chance to buy something. Barter systems are hard to accurately portray in games as well. To see what I mean you have to simply realize that Glow Sticks, Flares, and NVGs are a lot more valuable when it is night. A bit of a joke but when it is pitch black and you can't see you might be willing to give up a bit more for a pack of Glow Sticks than you would at noon. Same thing with you flashing for food and not having a knife so you can't hunt. Would you trade another player a Stanag clip for a can of sardines? Would it matter if you had an M4 of some sort or had an AK? There is no way the game can track all the barter interactions that could possible take place unless an engine was built to do so. This system lets them decide the relative value of an object and set it at that price so that someone could trade an AK and get 7 Stanag clips and a Morphine.
