Um... You can most certainly beat a zombie to death with your fists. I took down two at once that way. Punch in the head and beat them while they are down. You can also one shot most zombies with an axe, just don't hit them in the arms. You weapons follow an arc so learn where it swings and try to make contact. Zombies also telegraph their attacks although high pings can result in you being hit without noticing it. When they go to swing move and hit them.

I have found like 8 or 9 can openers in the 10 hours I played. They are not that rare.

How can we make a players life more important than his gear?
mercules replied to knawx's topic in General Discussion
Except sometimes your best move is not to play the game. In this case to not engage and simply get out of the area. Actually, most of the time that is your best move in this game... if you are concerned about your life at all. However, you life means nothing. Dying doesn't affect you at all, the only thing it does affect is your gear. So someone having better gear and you having nothings makes certain risky combats more attractive because you can just respawn and hopefully find a shovel fairly fast. So tying an advantage to staying alive for a while helps make not engaging in risky behaviours a more rewarding experience. -
No... KILLING is important to DayZ. Killing On Sight, which means just that, isn't. :) Killing On Sight means, "Player! BAM!" and isn't yet but should be followed with, "Oh... maybe I should have thought about that."

Why are people complaining about KOS like it's a feature issue?
mercules replied to kragz's topic in General Discussion
I translated this as, "I didn't get enough love and attention as a child so now I feel the need to try and make others sad to fill the empty hole inside myself where self worth and respect should be." I read that everytime I see "Delicious Tears" and "Tears Harvested" or something similar. :) -
I'm of the Opinion that KoS will be shorted sight and wasteful....

Okay... We need to stop a moment. A bunch of you are arguing not about KOS but about killing. I will state it again... "Killing On Sight" is not the same as killing. I am not saying people shouldn't kill each other. Okay, do you get that yet? If not read it again. Yes, you should kill someone if you believe they are a threat to you. That is not KOS. You should consider killing someone if they have gear you want. That is not KOS. Killing On Sight is shooting for NO apparent reason. It is, "Shooting someone for the Lulz!" There are so many reasons to shoot someone in the game we do not need KOS. KOS is spotting a newspawn on the coast and just blasting away. KOS is camping a hill with a sniper rifle and just shooting people then never bothering to loot them or otherwise have a real reason to shoot them other than, "Uh, because?" That is starting to happen in game. It leads to the point where we don't even bother pausing and thinking, "should I bother to shoot that guy or not?" The "I don't have any reason too." doesn't even become a thing because you just die from random shooting so now you just do it yourself. Now there is REALLY no reason to ever not shoot anyone since everyone randomly shoots any movement they see. I am not against killing in game. You are supposed to consider and actually kill other players in this game. Players are supposed to be a threat to others. However, I am totally against useless killing. Killing someone 850m away from you who is headed away from you. Why? Totaly moronic. Now you have likely altered other players you are in the area. But people do it. -

Yes, kills can be logged with a pen, good for you knowing how to count. However, this game doesn't do that for you automatically while literally hundreds of other games do. Think about that. This game wasn't built with kill count in mind. I think it is obvious that Kill Count is not part of this game's intent. So obvious in fact the comment didn't even merit a response. No really. I am aware of Maslow. However... I am willing to bet that those with beans and water and a nice warm hoody, who have the gun for security... have moved past those needs onto the more enlightened ones. Ergo Maslow doesn't even come into KoS. Why? Because KILLING ON SIGHT has nothing to do with Maslow. I am NOT talking about securing your personal area, finding food and shelter. I am talking about the mentality of "Oh, player! BAM!" which is KOS. Not, "Oh, that guy has a bigger backpack which would allow me to carry more things. I might want to consider tracking him and killing him." that is not KOS. KOS is counter to Maslow's theories because you are not taking the best route to securing your needs. Instead you are shooting when you might not want to. I've defined KOS in several threads you are involved in already so you should have picked up on what I was talking about ONE of these times instead of accusing me of using a Red Herring. ;) I'm not exactly sure why you brought up "no respawns" since I never mentioned it. I stated what would happen in RL. I stated there needs to be some sort of consequence to that behavoir or even better a reason to stay alive. You came up with that on your own... which again is why I didn't feel it needed a responce... well that in it falls readily into the Strawman since I didn't say anything of a sort and you kinda made it my argument all on your own, like all the above points. There, I addressed your points that I never talked about to begin with and were part of your strawman so I never had to address in the first place. -

Oddly enough bugs can crop up from shooting at people. ;) -
Saline bag will also get it back up some.

I hate Kill On Site. But I kill people in game and am not a pussy. Good attitude to have, I can see you will go far in life. -

NO! Also, that actually wouldn't do anything. In Epoch bandits camp routes into trader cities or hang out in the cities themselves. There are better ways that might have a chance of working. -

...and this is the point I am trying to make. Killing =/= Killing On Sight. Killing on Sight is literally spotting someone and shooting them. More times than not it is going to be a dumb move. Other survivors will hear you and avoid or come to your location. You might damage the very gear you were looking to loot from the corpse. Now if you are killing people you see just to be an ass, well you are an ass, enjoy life. -

No, knowing I am going to shoot someone is not intense. It is the opposite of intense. There is 0% intensity involved in it. It is an "Oh shit!" moment but that is about it and after a lot of "Oh shit!" moments they all tend to become, "Oh shit... *sigh*" moments really quick. When I meet with someone and extend the "friendly" offer or start a trade with someone I don't know what is going to happen... at all... When I start a firefight or someone else does there are things that will be done or I will die. Sometimes people flank you, but in this game with 3rd person it is basically, drive each other into cover, wait... wait... wait... he got impatient and shoot him. -
Nope! There is nothing permanent from server restarts yet. Implementation is... when it happens.

Weird in games that have a penalty for death I find I don't purposefully pick poorly matched fights not in my favor. I must be doing something wrong. Why? You will want to cut that long hair off as it is a detriment in a close combat fight. She is way too skinny lacking fat reserves so you will be giving her more of the food just to help her survive. Thirdly, everyone knows that in a horror situation people who have sex are the next ones to die. :P -
Not bound to anything by default. It's super secret where to find it... something about keybindings but I didn't tell you that.

*sigh* Kill On Sight =/= Killing. Kill on Sight is literally killing everyone you see for no apparent reason. I have nothing against banditry or killing. I kill people myself. However, there is a subset of people who spot a player and start blasting when there is no benefit to doing so and probably some downfalls. That is KoS, not Bandits. :) -

Ah, I see... you need self-worth and try and fill it by making others feel bad. Issue explained. -

In the game, yes. In real life you shoot someone dead just because you saw them... remember Kill On Sight is what we are talking about... you just killed the pharmacist who knows the code to get into a locked building full of antibiotics. Whoops... now you have an upper respiratory infection slowly killing you.... I know nothing like that is in the game but the game is supposed to eventually get around to being a simulation, not just a death match. Other people have hidden values and the way you find them out is by not... remember what we are talking about... killing them the moment you see them. I get that we form groups outside the game and then hop on and consider everyone else "them" and don't want "them" to hurt "us". But not everyone has a ready made group and while I am not a social person in the least I believe you might find some fun out of actually getting to know some of the people out there instead of just looking at them as an obstacle or victim. Unfortunately that rarely happens when the majority of the population simply blast away upon contact with anyone. At that point extending a greeting is often the last thing you want to do. It's a downward spiral though. I'm not asking you all to stop shooting people. I'm asking you to maybe stop a moment and think about if the game is better where the assumption is that you just shoot everyone or better when maybe, just maybe those other people might not shoot back and so now you might want to actually interact with them. In real life it is rare when a fight happens and one person/side walks away unharmed. Action movies don't follow this reality. ;) So it is in everyone's best interest to avoid a fight in most of those situations. The game doesn't have systems that make that a reality although it is getting better. I can tell you the guys who killed me walked away with some pretty damaged gear and blood they won't be getting back for a good long while. Engagement wasn't their best option. The game really isn't as much fun when EVERY encounter is a firefight. It actually get more tense when it isn't because you never know when it could turn into that. Instead it is, "Oh, there is a player. Yep he is shooting. There... shot him. *yawn*." -
Hmmmm... what specifically lead you to believe that? I am just curious.
-
Well, your best bet is to bug report it. That is first priority. Then check some settings. I know ATOC used to make things vanish in the ARMA 2 mod or at least in some of the mods of the mod. Maybe turn that off?

Well, this is why I think we should be able to pick a couple areas. So I could pick cooking and medical and my friend auto mechanic and gun maintenance. When cars are introduced and say you didn't fix things 100% with something like parts. Well, he could get an extra 1% just for taking the background. More practice will make it take less time and/or will restore just a bit more when he repairs something. You still need to find and loot the parts but he might need a few less to get it to a running state just from that small percentage. In another thread I mentioned someone with cooking having something like their cooked food taking longer to spoil. Not a huge advantage but still useful.

Rocket has mentioned the survival traits as a possible line of thought to follow when they get around to all that. The more you do something the faster you can do it in the future or you get a tiny bump in the results. Cook food a lot and soon your cooked food is a bit more filling. Repair times on vehicles go down the more you fix things. Personally if they go with that approach I would prefer if they gave us a choice of areas and lets us pick 2-3 depending on how many there are where we would improve. It would give not only that life a meaning, but also teaming up with others. Sort of the, "Have Mercules smoke some meat for you, it takes forever to spoil when he smokes it because he has been alive for 40 days and cooking a lot." Then we won't have someone out there farming skill and being better at everything. :)
