  1. Well I hear other games welcome the KOS playstyle and are actually built around it. I know... I didn't know that either I though DayZ was the only place you could shoot people and then yell homophobic slurs at them.
  2. Again... every other single game out there right now that is a FPS is a KOS game. DayZ is striving to be something just a little bit different but it can't when 99% of the player base simply treats it like the other hundreds of games they could go play. BTW, Not Killing On Sight is not the same as never killing. Killing On Sight is killing without any reason or gain, just because. Starting a new thread to discuss it is pointless contribute to those. Just because I don't kill on sight doesn't mean I won't kill and/or kill you without you seeing me. I just won't kill you "just because I like the lolz".
  3. Yes! Exactly. When 99% of the population are raving sociopaths who kill people for no apparent reason then there really isn't any reason not to start everyone off with a gun and just let them deathmatch it out... AKA EVERY OTHER GAME OUT THERE.
  4. That isn't KOS. That is the other thing. :)
  5. Because in that actual situation it would blatantly stupid to wander around blasting people with guns for the lolz? Ah, but you see shooting other players is really nothing new. I've been doing it for longer than some of you have been alive. It's old, it's stale and there are literally hundreds of games that give you that experience. DayZ is one of the few to give you that other option of NOT shooting someone... and actually benefiting from it. :o Nah... instead lets play it like were are playing the other hundreds and everything else that came before them.
  6. I tutored Logics in college... in the 90s. You totally missed my point. Psychotics who kill people for no reason make up a microscopic portion of the population. Several studies have shown around 1% of the U.S. population to have ~tendandcies~ towards sociopathy. So even if we double that number of POSSIBLE psychotics we 1 in 50. On a 40 person server 39 people should not technically be using the excuse, "Well, I am just playing a Sociopath who has no empathy towards others and kills for fun." Less than 1% of the population are sociopaths. So your chance of "spawning in" as a non-sociopath one is over 99% but in DayZ we have it reversed. ;)
  7. You mean explain it again? If you look at the design theory behind this game is was to put people into a situation of survival and then see what they do. Killing other players is an option and always should be. However, killing players as a hobby is a bit annoying for anyone trying to actually play the game based upon it's actual theory. Did I axe a guy with a gun when I ran into him in a house? Damn straight I did because he had a gun, we were in tight quarters and 99% of the player base would get that gun out as quickly as possible and shoot me. Did I talk to him first? No, because of the state of the player base. Were the player base less focused on their "murdery moods" and more on actually surviving then what most likely would have happened is that I would have gotten the hell out of the house and let him know on voice I was leaving the area. He could then judge if this was in fact likely and/or true and maybe cover me to be certain I left and then probably split himself. I've seen that very thing happen. However, when the majority of the player base treats the game like Quake/BF/COD just another blast away at anyone FPS disengaging isn't even an option. The majority of the player base would simply pull the gun and step outside and shoot me. Most of them would pull the gun and step outside to shoot me just because. So now my options are rather limited, kill him or be killed. I've played those games to death. I want something just a bit different where the threat is always there, but not alwasy going to come true. Kill On Sight means just that. You see a player and you shoot them. There is no game based reason and probably several good ones not to shoot them like making noise and getting shot in return.
  8. Check out this thread... http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155771-how-can-we-make-a-players-life-more-important-than-his-gear/ I don't believe in preventing killing at all. I do believe that we need incentives that make shooting random people for no reason less desirable. As it is loosing your character is no big deal. Gearing up because a fairly simple process for most people after and when we finally do have storage items then it really becomes somewhat moot because you have a spare stashed somewhere if you do die. No, there really isn't and literally hundreds of games handle the "shoot at everyone" better than DayZ Mod/SA. It's not challenging, it's boring. There is a reason I don't play BF/CoD style games very often, because they are dull. Good luck with that when 100% of the player base shoots on sight. It's not because people like you exist, it's because the is literally no reason not to risk shooting the other person that wants to trade so you might as well do it and everyone does. We have hundreds of games that want you to shoot everyone you see but only one where you consider NOT shooting someone. So if you really want to shoot everyone you see there is a very good selection to choose from and no one is forcing you to play DayZ. ;)
  9. See.. I disagree with Siberian on a lot of things, but he gets it. Killing is not Killing On Sight.
  10. It actually doesn't become a challenge. I've been playing games that boil down to "Kill the other players." since the early 90's. Deathmatch games where you shoot everyone on sight. There is no longer any challenge related to that game play style for some of us. The challenge comes from other interactions which are not possible when most of the player base treats it like Quake.
  11. Yes, there are issues. One noted one is that when melee weapons connect they don't stop, the animation continues. So it hit somewhere else but the animation continues the swing through the head. This misleads people into going, "I hit the head but it didn't register a hit." No, it hit shoulder and stopped but the animation continued. Look, this isn't an E-Peen thing. What I am trying to say is that just because you are having difficulties hitting things doesn't mean someone didn't get a skilled/lucky shot on your head. You not hitting things doesn't negate the possibility that it COULD happen. Like I said earlier it seems most likely that you were desynced, which means your avatar was standing still. Easy shot at that point but sure I can humor you and he took 10 swings to knock you out while desynced. He swapped the weapon and the game caught up with you being gone and so got nothing else but you log back in with his wrench and unconcious and not where he was because of the desync. You never saw or noticed him because your client never got the message he was around and he left the area when your avatar vanished.
  12. Very true. That is why I think each player should only have a limited number of areas they can improve. So now having someone who can repair a car with less parts than you is a nice thing to have. I know that won't stop preformed groups from killing others but it might make them more inclined to not take risks because Andrew can just run back to his body and loot it while we guard it or we can split up his gear and meet him over at X. Just making it a bit more painful to take a risk and fail will make some people think twice about shooting. Right now, I can get an Axe in about 30 minutes of play so why wouldn't someone try and smack a guy with a gun with an axe? If you die you are only 30 minute behind where you were. Since we don't want to make "gearing up" TOO onerous it seems giving you a better reason to stay alive than, "I might lose my gear." is a good idea. If we value the character less people will risk it.
  13. Yes, I am. Your skill with this game that doesn't function like those other games is probably bad, maybe worse than someone who has never played a more melee based game because you have habits that probably work for them and don't here. I one shot zombies in this game with melee. I knock them to the ground with head shots. You could be more skilled and getting defensive about it and assuming it is the game's fault isn't going to let you learn how this game handles melee.
  14. Which is exactly why were are discussing finding a value to being alive and staying alive. :)
  15. People don't KOS for gear, they Kill for gear. KOS means shooting just because. People who KOS for Lulz will never stop unless it makes it to hard to play the game for them. However, some people who might have shot might rethink it just like you mentioned.

    Knocked unconscious after two punches

Headshot! These will knock you out. Wrenches can do it too but remember melee items don't hit your cursor, they hit where they interset the player model and follow a swing path even if they don't stop when they connect yet. So you might be swinging for head and hitting shoulder on the way up. :)
  17. Ehem... But people will value the work they put into their own character. That means they will be less likely to put themselves at risk to simply chalk up another kill. This becomes even more true when we have places we can stash gear. ;)
  18. ...and people wonder why feminism is still needed.
  19. It doesn't take everyone a couple swings to hit a person and a wrench tot he head will knock you out the first time if you are not wearing some protective gear. You might have desynced before you logged out, he was there and hit your desynced avatar so you never saw him. It was easy to hit because it was just standing there. He took your axe and then your avatar vanished. Taking the axe would swap with his current weapon.

DayZ UI / HUD Photoshoped *UPDATED*

Sans Serif? Are you in *gasp* Marketing?
  21. Right... and I am being pedantic but this won't PREVENT, which is what you stated. It will DISCOURAGE. :) We can't, and don't want to prevent it, but we do want to discourage it. Just getting the terminology right here.
  22. I know right, but I end up having to kill people I would otherwise ignore because some other asshat killed them on the beach as they spawned in for no reason so now they are not inclined to even listen to reason. It's beginning to dictate my playstyle. ;)
  23. You are NEVER going to prevent it from happening. There will always be some asshat who will be willing to lose everything just to try and take someone else down. However, you can make it so he does have the consequence of losing everything. ;)
  24. It's "I'm a friend, you're a friend, and we're all friends..." Contractions - taught in 4th grade. Maybe sooner. ;) Again... I don't thing we all should get along. I think shooting someone who is 800 meters from you headed the other way with no gear is a bit stupid in that it does you no good and puts you at risk. BTW, that is KOS. I am not against killing each other, I am against E-Peen, "Did you see me shoot that guy who was never any threat to me for no other reason than to tell you I killed someone?" and to "Reap Tears". Although they would probably spell it "reep teers".
  25. If you look closely you will notice the iris has teeth. ;)
