Where are the Remains/Bodies? Wheres the horror? To be added?
mercules replied to Turk (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
He was being sarcastic. The point is that what you are asking for is in the "finishing touches" catagory of game design. Obviously horror elements are not going to work if they are static and always there. Point in fact is the fact that you do not once mentions the static ones that already exist like the smears of blood and scratches that are around the world showing where struggles have taken place. I am simply saying that it is very unlikely to find any mention of these things because it is unlikely the developers are thinking on these terms yet. "Severed Limbs" is not a requirement for the game to function it is atmosphere. It gets added in towards the end of development. Esepcially if it is going to be dynamic and I believe the only way for these things to offer the propper feel is for them to be dynamic. You don't want your players to go, "Oh I found it in the house where the guy hung himself." "Is that past the severed arm on the corner or is it the one before you get to the pile of instestines? In other words I think you are asking about this a little too early because.. you know.. Alpha. -
This too... if you don't have a Quad Core the game tends to run poorly.

Wow... Okay... I have played on 100+ ping servers but my connection hasn't always been stable to them. It sounds like you are picking the lowest one and still over 100. BTW, BI doesn't host these servers. These servers are rented by individuals like yourself and myself from providers scattered across the world. So ranting at BI will get you absolutely nowhere. If EVERY server on your list is over 100+ ping and spikes regularly then either they are too far away from you or your connection to the internet is not stable enough to play the game. If it is the former you could try renting a server closer to you yourself but they are expensive or wait and see if anyone sets one up. Otherwise it is a matter of dealing with your ISP or personal network and fixing whatever is slowing you down there. BTW, a 20MB download means very little. It means you can download files speedily but most of those have limited upload speed and games like DayZ are a two way street where what matters is the slowest point. You could have a really low upload speed and so have nothing happening because of that. It also doesn't mean the connection is stable and not dropping packets. If your connection is dropping packets then it ends up like this. "Suzy was a very #### girl. She spent her days ##### for a friend." and your computer has to send the request again sometimes to get "Suzy #### a very lonely girl. She spent her days #### for a ####." if it is really bad. Actually the computer is asking for "What was the firth word you sent?" and getting back "Lonely" and plugging it into the sentence, so to speak, but you can see how that would make the game run like crap and crash when the server and game are going back and forth each asking what the other is doing right now.

It isn't all friendly but it is decidedly more friendly than the non-Hardcore. I've run into several people and done the, "Friendly... I'm just passing through." and we have gone our separate ways. I've been too wary to trade. I did run into one guy who did NOT respond to me and so I flipped around and put buildings between us. I think I missed his friend while glancing over my shoulder to see if he was still behind me because I heard shots and got the "You are Dead" screen. They wouldn't even talk to me while they were drinking my soda and eating my rice not to mention reloading from my ammo. I could hear it all. If I had had a gun to go with all that ammo, I might not have tried to run for it. :)

I have to ask, "What is considered "Low Ping" by you?" A few weeks back my friend was looking for a server to join and I went, "I don't see any with a low ping for me. What do you see?" He replied most of his list had a low ping. We are on different ISPs but both go out from this state on the same backbone so it shouldn't be THAT much difference for us. So I was like, "What? I've got nothing under 60." and he was like, "What? No, it's all about 80 but that is a low ping." To which I came back with, "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? 30 is a low ping and 60 is tolerable." He came back with "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?"

Today we met a guy playing for the first time
mercules replied to thelonewarrior's topic in General Discussion
Don't you know you ROBBED him of becoming a cynical and jaded douchebag. You totally ruined his miserable experience that should have taught him to hate everyone else in the game with such a white hot passion that he refuses someone offering him a spare can opener and runs at them with a pipe wrench screaming, "How dare you look down on me! I'm better than you, seeeeeee. *swish* *swish* *whack*" Okay, all kidding aside, awesome. You just set someone up to likely be wary of others but not totally closed off to future interactions that don't involve an exchange of bullets at hypersonic speeds. -
I did read your post. I also happen to know the bandwidth for WoW and GW2 is minimal compared to the bandwidth for DayZ:SA and that lag is much less of an issue in most MMOs unless you happen to be a healer. ;)So you could be playing WoW just fine with what most people playing a FPS would consider a shit connection. Finding a stable server should take you about 5 minutes. Here is what you do. Search in the server area and filter by ping. When you see one that has a ping under 40 keep refreshing that one and see if it spikes up over 70, if it does... don't join it. Continue until you find one that doesn't spike hugely for you, join that one. Since it seems to be "all servers" you are having an issue with we should look for a common cause. Let me see... what is the one thing that doesn't change. All the servers are in different data centers in different cities hosted by different companies... so... the common thing... would be... You and your connection to the internet. You have proven to yourself that it isn't the servers since they all don't work and they are all different so it has to be the one thing you haven't changed. Okay, I suppose it could be your computer but I'm leaning towards a bad connection with a lot of dropped packets which would be less likely to interfere with something like WoW and GW2.
-
That doesn't mean the issue is in any way the Developer's problem. It sounds like you have either a crappy internet connection and/or are connecting to the worst servers with the highest ping. While I do get kicked out of the game more often in the SA than in the Mod I have a really easy work around for it. I find a server with a better and more consistent ping and log into that and the problem goes away OR I check my connection to my ISP and see if my Modem/Router needs a reboot to clear up some issue on my end.

This, except I have a TrackIR. I keep finding myself trying to look over my shoulder by twisting my head a bit to the right or look up and down by moving my head. Playing other games you get used to hitting reload fairly often as it simply tops off the clip in your gun and is always a good idea. Even in the Mod it is not a good idea and in SA you can find yourself reloading a 60 round mag you had taken 3 shots from with a 20 round mag. Doh!

I suppose I will never understand why some people get pleasure out of torturing others... and I have below average empathy. Maybe that is it, I just don't care enough to waste the time and effort trying to hurt them to no good effect.
-
I have about 7 in my history but I really only play on 2 of them. Basically I tried a bunch of servers until I found the two most stable for me and those are the two I log into. Typically I only log into the one unless something is going on with it then I join the other one.

Did you bother to check the Known Issues area? In other words maybe follow the link in my signature?

Very nice find.

No, we do things wrong, we just look around for answers, find them, and go back to playing.

Last night had stuff, this morning new spawn. What?

The misogyny is strong with this one. Actually that is sexist on two levels. One that women need to be naked to have value and second that men are brainless idiots led by their penis even when the female is pixels. -
Where are the Remains/Bodies? Wheres the horror? To be added?
mercules replied to Turk (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Really, because Quarentine and 28 Days Later are exactly the type of zombie I tend to think of first because, baring the super fast infection rate, they are the most likely to actually occur. The dead rising up has so many issues with it that it is in the zone of Science-Fantasy while infected living "zombies" are at least in the realm of Science-Fiction. I see you really don't understand the point. The development at this stage is such they are more focussed on getting systems working and models made for items than in putting in immersive horror features. They have already done a pass on the map since the Mod's map and made it look a lot more rundown and like some things actually happened there. There are streaks of blood in all kinds of buildings and many other things. However, we can't provide you with them having talked about adding those elements you want in because the game is an ALPHA and they haven'g gotten around to the trivial bullshit yet as they are working on core mechanics and models. -
Have you ever killed your friend/teamkilled by accident
mercules replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
In the SA, not yet. In the Mod, tons of times. I once backed over a friend with an SUV. I asked, "Are you in?" and he replied, "Yeah... just a sec." The pause was too long and when I heard "Yeah..." I gunned it in reverse not knowing he was accessing the gear in the vehicle and crouching back there. I have shot friendlies who incorrectly told me their location. I have been shot for the same reason. I have shot someone while trying to apply a blood bag, bandage, or trying to access their backpack. Probably the funniest was a miscommunication on a chopper pick up. My friend thought I was going to hover then take off right away and I thought he wanted me to land. I crushed him beneath a skid as he attempted to jump in. -
So ya food and hunger is pretty messed up.
mercules replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
So... you still don't understand food and drink in the game. When you start the game you are literally starving. As in, "I haven't eaten in more than a week and feel weak." starving. You can change that by eating and eating. In addition you do not understand Real Life good and drink. Soda DOES hydrate you. This myth has got to die someday. Caffeine is a diuretic but it is a very mild one. It makes you urinate, but considering the dose of caffeine you get in those 12oz of fluid you are still hydrating. Now, 12oz of a caffeinated pop is not as hydrating as 12oz of water but it is never, ever, ever, going to dehydrate you. On top of that not all pop in the game has caffeine in it. For example Spite, which is the game world equivalent of Sprite... no caffeine, nothing to dehydrate you, Sugar, CO2, Water. -
Will there be a reward system for characters that survive?
mercules replied to sav112g's topic in General Discussion
Part of the issue with the game is that the character itself has no value so "survival" means literally nothing. If you die close to where you spawn or have friends that can grab your gear there is literally no downfall to dying. In the Mod this lead to things like people suiciding to become healthy again then running back to their body or friends who had their gear. When storage is added in like a tent or underground base then your character really will have no value as you can stockpile spare gear and/or dump your gear, die, and get it all back. This is why many of us who have experienced that in the Mod believe the character needs some sort of reason to live longer other than, "I did this." some reward for surviving X active game hours or for actions you have taken during this life. -
Techincally this IS a new map. While the rough layout of many things is the same, the North has changed a great deal.

so i had a blast so far but this is killing my fun
mercules replied to brumey's topic in General Discussion
As I was trying to point out: Given the nature and location of the connection it seems unlikely that the disconnect was anything but intentional. Random disconnects rarely happen when you are in a very good position to have cover and fire as soon as you log in inside a building where some of the best loot in the game spawns. 1. People who end up randomly disconnected in buildings often end up in walls and floors. 2. People who end up randomly disconnected typically are somewhere between point A and point B with point B being where their client last saw them and point A being where the server last saw them. By the time you get the message that you haven't received anything from the server you are usually further along. This makes it very unlikely they just happened to be in a corner and/or in cover. 3. After a random disconnect people typically hop right back in. They don't typically wait 10-30 minutes and have someone else wander into the area, especially if they know they disconnected in a random location in a very dangerous area. So any reasonable person could make and educated summation that people who are logging into a server in cover behind some bunk beds or behind where and open door would cover them probably didn't randomly disconnect especially when you were just in that location and didn't see anyone nearby 3 minutes ago. ;) -
What is your point? "lol, it's driving in traffic guys..." "lol, it's interacting with other human beings guys..." "lol, it's eating guys..." All of this is part of life. It's part of the journey. It's fine if we decide to discuss our journey and enjoy the discussion which is also part of the journey. If you don't want to discuss it, don't. ;)

Irony.... Pointing out insults mean they ran out of points to debate, then insulting them.
-
There is a lot of debate on that particular issue. It is not an actual fact but one side of a debate.

so i had a blast so far but this is killing my fun

I am attempting to point out the ridiculousness of, "Well, they might have accidentally disconnected there. " to you by pointing out how they spawned back in. I don't know about you, but when the game kicks me I sometimes have to run around a bit to figure out where I even am and check my inventory as sometimes things I picked up several minutes ago, or food I ate several minutes back didn't register. It is possible that all the people I have personally seen log into Barracks/Jails accidentally did so, but very improbable. So yes I feel perfectly justified in calling them a server hopper. You are correct, some people might possibly get disconnected there. If so I haven't seen one that looks as though that was the case... ever. I have, however, seen a large number of players who have logged in in such locations more heavily geared than one trip to such a location will typically get you in very specific spots with good fields of fire. Yes, I will leap to the most logical conclusion that I have yet to see someone accidentally disconnect in those locations while still knowing it is theoretically possible they could.
