Dayz was once described as a social experiment...
mercules replied to Karmaterror's topic in General Discussion
Actually history shows the very opposite by the very fact that you are currently sitting in what I would assume to be a safe place wasting time on posting to an internet forum instead of foraging for food. Society reasserts itself. Rules change but mankind wants organization and cooperation deep down or they wouldn't continue to restructure themselves into societies over and over again. There are very brief revolutions where blood and chaos rule, but those go away and a new society rises. -

Online game with no "consequence" for your actions. Of course people are jerks. In reality shooting everyone you see would be ridiculous as you would shoot the very person you will someday need to help you. My computer knowledge will be less useful without power and internet. My first responder skills however could save someone's life. I can fire and maintain a gun but I doubt I could do reloads without the tools I've used in the past and even then I'd need a refresher course. I have some basic training in self defense including with weapons. However, while I could maybe give a car a break job, change oil and plugs, fix flats I couldn't get an engine up and running or strip it apart. I wouldn't know what I could salvage from one vehicle to get a different model working, but I know people who could and shooting them would plainly be stupid if I could work with them. Lone wolves would quickly die in the apocalypse since they wouldn't have anyone to take a watch while they sleep or find medicine if they fell too ill to forage for themselves. They can't all have the knowledge they need to cover all situations. Multiple eyes and ears have multiple chances to notice danger and can help each other if something does happen. A second person with a gun can move and flank while one provides covering fire. Some might say you can only trust those you already know, but you got to know that person at some point and time in your life and you can meet new people and they can earn that trust, but not if you shoot them on sight. -
Oddly enough if the code doesn't exist to do something then the player will never be able to do it. So what the developers want the game to be can very much influence what it is more than the consumer. Sure the game might go under if the consumer doesn't like that change, but the ultimate power as to what the game becomes is the developer. You can pretend all you want that end users can influence the code... but they can't. "End Game" is a nebulous concept that doesn't really exist in a sandbox. Even in mods of the mod where you can build semi-secure bases and have high end weapons you don't see an "Endgame" as all of that can go away in an instant and you can literally be starting over from scratch. Hell, half the fun is starting over from scratch and I frequently switch servers when I get too settled in. The developer image and goal is what the developers are going to code towards. Player requests can change that goal but I hate to tell you this, for every person saying PVP is the focus and only thing to worry about in DayZ there is one stating the opposite. So it will always probably be some form of a mix... ...still that will allow you to go on thinking PVP is the most important thing in the game to focus on and do so and others can focus on other areas so nothing really has changed.

Runs at 60 FPS out in the empty spaces. As I close in on towns I get down to 35-40 at the lowest but I can frequently get close to 50 if there isn't too much going on even in small cities. I built this rig for MWO, another game that is CPU intensive avoiding AMD CPUs knowing they were an issue from various benchmarks. Since I had a chance to throw in more RAM than needed I did so that the system can grow.

How do you veterans start a fresh spawn? ( dayZ SA)
mercules replied to killbot420's topic in New Player Discussion
What I have found is that the buildings that everyone heads for first are typically looted. With the new loot respawn that might be less of an issue but still I find the less often checked often have the items I am after. I hit the common places I find hats, pants, shoes, and rotten fruit. When I hit the, "Nothin' good spawns there." that is when I tend to find various handguns and such. I mean you can find Mosin, SKS, and Blaze in a barn and barns are frequently on the outskirts of cities or alone in a field which means you can sneak into and loot them quickly without agroing a bunch of zombies. Like others have said, get inland to the less traveled cities. For zombies try and find a Hoe or axe and then it is a matter of learning how to melee them. -

Better log out of the forums, you might accidentally get some information you didn't "earn" in game. -
I have 16 GB of Ram on my computer, why wouldn't I? Ram is cheap. If I was doing video editing I'd probably drop another 16 into it.

Don't use AMD CPUs. I know of several games that run poorly on AMD CPUs, all of them require more CPU power than GPU.

As I stated, every survivor you see in Chernarus arrived AFTER the outbreak. So your "survivors still alive because dey had ammo in der guns" is 0. I get how viruses work, I've done some minor research into them over the years because I find it slightly fascinating. Grew up in a medical family and was reading through my mom's medical journals and books when I was 11-12(?) then was in advanced biology classes in highschool and started out as a biology major in college. I later decided to go into computers but kept an interest in biology, zoology, and especially virology. We were speaking of viruses that create zombie like conditions and of those the vast majority are presented as being spread by contact with bodily fluids. I don't see how Walking Dead supports your point. If anything it proves mine. Rick survives by dumb luck, his door was never breached and he came out of his coma. He then gears up by running into another survivor and going to the police station where the weapons are under lock and key and the mags are not really IN the gun because law enforcement doesn't store them that way.
-
You did assume. You are assuming some people survived because they had noticed something going on and had time to arm themselves and thus survived. You are not realizing how much dumb luck might have come into play. Also from the "background" of DayZ the survivors are both immune to the virus and not from Chernarus itself. So looking around, do you see anyone still left who is not infected? No, they all left. So anyone who was alive and as you assume had a weapon with mag in it, left before we got there. To address the next point, there are a lot of people who would attribute reports of riots and civil unrest to being just that and NOT the zombie apocalypse. Many rational people would scoff at the idea of zeds and eating people and chalk it up to sensationalism. So then if it is airborne they might go to sleep with their doors locked and wake up with their loved one choking the life out of them Most movies do NOT have airborne sources. 28 Days Later - Body Fluid transfer even a single drop of blood into a cut can infect you Romero movies - bite transfer Quarantine - Body Fluids again Resident Evil - although the initial "release" of it was airborne once it dispersed it could only be spread by bites/Body Fluids after that. World War Z - Bite/Scratches mostly bites. The Walking Dead - Apparently Airborne which is dangerous as any "dead" person may come back to life. Typically viral zombies mean bloodborne and body fluid vectors.

From my understanding the tent will stay there, but anything you put in it will be gone.
-
Two problems with that. 1. You are assuming that people had warning. 2. You are assuming that the situation was clear as to what was happening and that they believed it. As to #1. In another thread we are discussing the logical evolution of the zeds and apocalypse. Most of us agree it was probably very fast spreading and thus likely airborn. If it was then that person or someone more susceptible in their household fell ill and turned before they knew they would need the gun and it was simply never taken out.

The UAZ replaced Soviet GAZ and the Jeeps that the Soviets had and were using. The design is similar and it fills the same role as the American Jeep and British Landrover. The design is remarkably similar to Jeeps as well. UAZ: http://data3.primeportal.net/trucks/egor_kalmykov/uaz-469_1/images/uaz-469_1_04_of_93.jpg Jeep: http://cj3b.info/Photos/Netherlands/RNLAFCJ3BAmbulanceVanderveen.jpg So back on topic, you can find mags for pistols in the Jeep looking UAZ wrecks that are everywhere. One could make a joke that those actually are Jeep wrecks and the more easily maintained UAZ are still on the road driving around. I can very easily see many scenarios where a gun and clip are not together. For one thing typically they are not stored together. My friends don't keep a full mag in the gun but have it filled and separate so that when they need it they can simply slap it in. It's likely that people who got their mag into their guns and had extras made it out of the area while those who dropped it, didn't reach it, or had too few are now wandering around. It's possible they had an empty gun in one hand and the mag in the other when attacked and they went in two different directions. So if you are finding stored guns, the mags are not typically in them. If you are finding dropped guns, it may have been dropped because the person using it ran out of mags or was attacked while reloading. Not all of us practice speed loading on a regular basis.

Who here believes that the new CryEngine that is coming out has no code in common with CryEngine 1? This is the forth generation of CryEngine. Also Ubisoft uses a heavily modified version of CryEngine for at least one of their games, that is CryEngine 1 if I remember correctly. They call it something completely different although I can't remember what it was. I can't think of a single developer I have talked to who throws the whole code base out and starts from scratch. Instead they typically take certain packages and modify up from there or take their existing software and go through it with a scalpel replacing he parts that no longer function how they want them to. Then they wrap it up in a new package and that is that. Techincally Dean should have stated DayZ would be moving to a "DIFFERENT" engine, one based off of ToH but heavily modified and that they would be swapping it out one module at a time. New, Modified, or whatever, it is different and will hopefully do what they need it to do to make DayZ better. BTW, take a look at Steam Stats. DayZ SA is in the top 10 of games played right now and it is up there with finished and polished games.

DayZ Zombies, an attempt to diagnose the zed condition
mercules replied to Death By Crowbar's topic in General Discussion
What? Expecting someone to know how to correctly communicate in a forum? Wait, doesn't forum mean a place to discuss things, to communicate? I believe it does Other Barry. So does this mean someone should probably put some effort into knowing how to communicate their thoughts? Yes, I believe is does Other Barry. -
Shall I show you what you are doing wrong? It's a logical fallacy. The fallacy of the undistributed middle occurs when the term that links the two premises is never distributed. In this example, distribution is marked in boldface: All Z is B All y is B Therefore, all y is Z B is the common term between the two premises (the middle term) but is never distributed, so this syllogism is invalid. In other words, there are parts of authenticity that do not equate to realistic and vise-versa even in this context. Crafting a bow from ash is authentic, it is not however, realistic. You must find an in game material that relates to real world material used to make a bow, but the process and even the material itself is not truly realistic. Using the above example a valid distribution would be: All Y is B All B is Z Therefore, all Y is Z.

Need is not a colloquial term that relates to want. It is a term thrown about by those with an overblown sense of entitlement on a regular basis and I could see how they could consider the two the same since they tend to assume every little whim they have must be fulfilled. Someone states they need chocolate. I then assume they are diabetic with low sugar and need the quick boost, or maybe have a migraine and need a small dose of caffeine. Those are actual "needs". If chocolate is not available I might help them find a substitute like a soda pop which can have much the same effects. I might ask what their particular need for that is so I can give them orange juice for the sugar or coffee for the caffeine. If they go, "Oh well I just felt like some chocolate." then that was a "want" not a "need". Yes I am a pedantic ass, but you don't "need" anything in a GAME you want it.

See... I think they can but they have been told often enough that they can't that they come to believe it. Just like if you tell a kid they are worthless over and over they will often end up feeling that way the majority of the time. We are definitely coded by genetics in a certain way, but on top of that we have a society that feeds into some of those things and tell young men, "You don't cry you make others cry." and "Even good boys want sex, but good girls don't." Which is wrong on both accounts. Basically I'm glad my daughter is growing up with good role models out there and I can help her wander through the morass of teenage life by (hopefully) being the type of dad she can talk to openly. -

Take a look at the thread and the fact that we are critiquing female models but no such thing has happened on this forum for the male models. Look at the comments about how they wouldn't get laid until people got desperate... as if that is the value that a woman has, can you sleep with her. The point of the guy with the sign is to point out that not only women are feminists. Men need to be feminists too because we are constantly told we are apparently hormone driven idiots who don't have control over our own thought processes, among other things. Look, the genders are not that same, but there is so much gender bias in the world that needs to go away and it starts by educating idiots that feminist is not synonymous with, "Can't get laid" or "hates men." -
He didn't, I've pointed out how the two words have very different meanings despite your insistence otherwise. "No in this case they mean the same." except they don't and never did. Which is why people are not using them to mean the same thing. People like Dean. It's not our fault you can't grasp that concept.

You realize the scenario you just listed is probably the least common form of rape, right? Basically the best way to stop rape is for people to stop raping each other. Since the most common is men raping women or men then it's kinda obvious that men have the ability to stop it. However in the U.S., at least, we have a culture that blames women for being raped instead of the rapists... which is why he is carrying the sign. But this is off topic. On topic some of us really hate that people don't really comment or care about how "handsome" male models are but female models are instantly judged by how "beautiful" they are. Still part of that weird culture that has misogynist views towards women and exactly why feminism is important. -
