Should Rocket go sooner rather than later?
mercules replied to banjo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Well, just saying you don't have to join the military or try for MENSA to get your IQ tested. There are online tests but they are untrustworthy so simply finding someone who is qualified to deliver the WAIS is probably the most accurate measurement you will get. -
Should Rocket go sooner rather than later?
mercules replied to banjo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
No, you simply get someone to give you the WAIS, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. I used to support the software that does the recording and scoring of the test. I was tested multiple times as a child and young adult and my parents would not share the results with me until I was an actual adult but the phrase, "You are not working up to your potential." was thrown at me multiple times a year all through school. My highest recorded score was 154 and all of them were over 145. I'm pretty sure the multiple concussions I have suffered(received another one just 2 weeks back) may have lowered it some since then. All IQ measures is your ability to grasp concepts and speed with which you can reason things out. If you are not challenged or exposed to knowledge a high IQ will not be of any use. Me having an IQ over 140 doesn't mean I know more than my friend with a 130 something, or that I can solve an issue better than he can. What it does mean is that given the same base of information and education on a given topic, I might be able to reason out the answer to a problem before he might but again there may be a flash of insight he has or some other experience in his life that allows him to view the problem from a different perspective and solve the issue sooner. It takes intelligence, exposure/education, and drive to make a genius. I have enough of the first two but lack all but the most rudimentary drive to do anything with it. -

Breaking Point was not, free... it's free for us but the code is not released and you can only rent a server from specific server hosts who are affiliated with Breaking Point. Like BP for ARMA II BP for ARMA III seems to have "borrowed" a lot of code from various places, shoehorned it together, and released it. Now this is from someone who had a BP ARMA II server for a long time and played a good deal of it. The difference between BP and SA is that BP is someone taking a stock car and adding on customization kits(not even hand done customizations but kits from someone else) and going, "Look at my new car!" and someone actually manufacturing a new model of a car. Yes SA is still using this suspension that was used on this other model, and this transmission, but they are regearing it for better performance down the road. Right now the car isn't assembled, we are idling it in the garage and going, "Wow, this is really loud and rough sounding." when the exhaust system isn't attached yet. You seem to have proven my point that BP is not further along than SA as the one poster stated. He has been saying the same thing for years despite proof to the contrary. You will not get him to change his mind in one conversation. Just ignore him. -
There are a multiple items that will open a can. Some waste a small amount of food. Typically I find a: Screwdriver Kitchen Knife - that is damaged as I like to keep a nice one around to skin animals Bayonette Axe All these will be damaged by opening cans and will lose some food when you open it. The Can Opener will not be damaged as easily and will not waste food, but they are harder to find.

Do you mean the Anti-Aliasing?

Any option to not lose everything every few minutes?
mercules replied to Tourist (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Survival game. What is the point of a survival game if dying doesn't make you start from scratch? I just wish the characters had some sort of advancement other than gear so when you died it wasn't just a gun you lost, but your ability to start fires with wet wood in the pouring rain and wind in mere seconds, or ability to bandage people up faster. -

I've played Breaking Point. Melee - Worse than the Mod. One axe stroke can drop 10+ zombies. I know this because I had 10+ zombies spawn and run into the barracks I was looting. Killed them all with one chop. You have to have your axe loaded like in the Mod. No real other melee weapons around. Zombies - No threat, the don't notice players, when they do they slowly walk toward them. They are easy to kill, move slowly and wow is the animation horrible on them. Zombies = 0 threat, at least in SA there is a chance the zombies might kill you. If they did in Breaking Point you would never admit it to anyone. They only appear in an area if players are near, just like the Mod, they despawn when players leave. So basically zombies are a flag for, "Player over here." and that is it. Much like the Mod. Guns - Basically the ARMA III guns spawn. Wow, that was hard. Not much work into trying to put interesting guns into the world, Grab something that uses 7.62 x 51mm and find a scope for it. Not hard to find either. I was fully geared in about 3 hours of play including NVGs and GPS. Vehicles - They slapped rusted skins on ARMA III vehicles. You need to fix them up a tiny bit, but rather easily done. Loot Spawns - Horrible. Seriously, they couldn't figure out how to spawn the loot other than having it spawn in containers so you can run PAST a building with a quick glance to the side to look in the door and you know if there is anything to loot. Not like SA where you might miss something even if you ran through the rooms in the house. The containers themselves are a pain since they block movement and are buggy. You can loot farm some spawns incredibly easily as well. What is more I was killed by a loot box. I ran up to a crash site and the box wiggled a bit. I was able to access it despite it's vibrating so I started to swap my stuff into it to put on the bigger backpack and load that up. Got the backpack and went to grab my stuff when the box started to literally fly around in loops. It struck me multiple times doing serious damage each time and finally I died from the damage it did. Interface - The ARMA 3 Breaking Point interface is actually worse than the ARMA 2 interface. It's painful to move things around or to "manage" your storage on your character. Saying it is worse than the mod is saying something too. Maps - their homebrew map is "meh". Clustered military spawns close to each other, crappy cities with no reason to visit them. Kinda like the Mod. Survival/Medical - Bleh... next to nothing involved. Clunky mechanics and very little need to do much of anything to survive. For the most part I think the theme for Breaking Point is "I guess that is good enough." not even with the words, "for now" added in. It just seems like they kludged some really crappy design over Wasteland, patted themselves on the back, and released it. The ONLY thing they did that was even half way decent was the class system. They have a fairly good concept there and executed it in fairly good manner. -

Zombies, interface, survivability
mercules replied to beyondbeliefs's topic in New Player Discussion
The interface isn't ugly. It isn't pretty, but that isn't the same as ugly. It's more "functional" than anything and the game is in Alpha so that is excusable. You should have seen the interface from the Mod. That was ugly and functioned poorly too. As for the rest. My opinion stands. If you don't want gritty authentic survival then why play a game who's opening statement on the first page of their webpage states it is just that. There is no arrogance or malice in that. It's like, "If you don't enjoy watching cars drive around a track, why watch NASCAR?" There are a ton of games that don't worry about bleeding, broken bones, or finding gear. So if you find those parts annoying, go play those games. Obvious, right? -
Zombies, interface, survivability
mercules replied to beyondbeliefs's topic in New Player Discussion
You can outrun zombies easily. If not you can literally box them down with your fists and if you are good(and there is no current desync/lag) you won't even get hit doing it. 1 zombie no issue. 2+ is problematic without a weapon. Which is why I often just run those off. It is huh? Then don't play DayZ. Seriously, this is the main part of DayZ. When you die that character is dead and you have to start over. That is the DayZ experience and it created a new concept in FPS style games. Seriously, if you don't like having to start over and don't like needing to deal with health issues like bleeding, getting sick, broken legs, and more a SURVIVAL game isn't for you. You really don't have a clue. Here is the opening statement for the game. Key words: Gritty Authentic Survival -
It totally holds water. On several occasions you have stated that PVE holds not challenge for "real players" or "elite players" thus stating that if someone holds an opposing view then they are not a real or elite player which is the "No True Scotsman" fallacy in a nutshell. I could have put in a line ---------------------------- to accentuate that I was no longer answering the third question but was continuing on with an thoughts in general, but I assumed people could read and understand English and grasp when topic changes occur.
-
All I see here is an argument for not playing 3rd person servers.
-
You know that I at least do as I stated this was one of the reasons I play this game. When I am in serious trouble, where it is because a zombie got a lucky shot on my and broke my leg and I see three more headed for me, or a player pointed a gun at me I get a rush when my character is about to die. This is where you and I no longer see eye to eye. Most of it is because you bring about a fallacious argument that being "False Dilemma". See, you state that no PVE element will ever be a challenge or be able to challenge a "real player" which then brings in the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. What you fail to understand is that the PVE element can add to the PVP element and the reverse is also true. See when I hit a town and I have a pistol in hand with ammo I know I can use that to clear out the few zombies currently in the town. Even if that noise attracts other zombies I can shoot them as well. Not an issue. So the PVE is as you would say, "No challenge." however, because I also know that there is a chance that another player might be around and a chance that they might not be friendly making noise taking out zombies might not be the best idea. So I slip out an axe and kill a zombie, but then I also don't want to be caught bringing an axe to a gun fight if I do get spotted by an unfriendly player. The PVP and PVE feed off each other. Then again people I meet in the town could be friendly and could be grateful to have a player with a handgun around to clear out zombies faster so we could loot together. Now the PVE can make the PVP more intense as well. There have been times when I have known that shooting will bring three zombies down on me. Those zombies will give away my position even if the player I shoot at wouldn't immediately figure out where the shot came from. So there are times when I avoid shooting because of that or if I do shoot I have to quickly deal with 3 zombies before making sure the target didn't get away. These two things are not exclusive and the PVE helps the PVP be more than a run and gun and the PVP makes the PVE less patterned. Not for me. I take the devs at their word when they say it is a survival based game. I have a goal to survive as long as I can with every single life. So if I get a crappy spawn point I work with it. If I break my leg I drag my butt to the woods and search for kindling or chop some down and make a splint. I enjoy dealing with things like getting sick and having to get myself healthy again and hope they put in more of the medical system. If I hear gunfire in a location where people shouldn't have guns yet I tend to move on out. Gunfire more West I might investigate. The first is typically someone who ran off to get one and then came back to kill people, the second could be anything. I spent some time the other night testing out cooking food, crafting items, and other systems and enjoyed it. I could see hunting and gathering being enjoyable for me but even I will admit it would get boring if that was all there was. Just like I would get bored if shooting at other people is all there was. My only issue is with the mentality that you only run around and gear up to shoot people. To me the game is about survival and you run around and gear up to survive and sometimes shooting people is the way to survive. So... I shoot people when I judge I must. Example, the other night a friend of mine and I went to the small base near Vybor. Server had just reset and the doors were open so I warned him to watch out for people. He went into a barracks and ran into a player, which scared him enough he jumped and his gun went off, but not at the guy. He back peddled out of there and let him know, "Hey, we are friendly. Sorry about that you scared the crap out of me. Um... you going to talk to us?" When the guy was not answering I got ready. I was already in the bushes covering my friend with my Mosin. He backed off to the area I was near and then suddenly a second player appeared just as my friend predicted with a, "We better back off I bet he is calling in a buddy." My friend ended up shooting that guy who had a sportster and I shot the other guy when he went after my friend with a shotgun. Meanwhile my friend was stating, "Hey, we tried to be friendly man." Notice, it still wasn't a KoS situation, we offered them an out but the one guy wouldn't respond and the other tried to sneak up on us and get off a shot. So they both died.

You keep saying this not understanding that the only person you can determine if this is true for is YOU. PVE will hold my attention with the occasional player interaction mixed in. Constant PVP will not hold my attention or the attention of dozens and dozens of players I have personally spoken to about this, if it did we would be playing games more suited to constant PVP.

New patch equals crazy drinking glitch
mercules replied to hothtimeblues's topic in General Discussion
Did you ever notice how when you bandage or do other actions you often crouch (AKA Change Your Stance) if you are not currently crouched? So basically it looks like when the Drink All action is triggered it should trigger the Crouch stance but is instead triggering the Prone stance. -
There were a couple guns that would fire normal ammo through an SD Weapon. I believe the Makrov SD, which isn't in the normal vanilla mod but is in several others would do that. Well, they can't remove all sounds and all sounds are broken. Silencers, on the other hand are very misleading if they don't work. You work to find one, take the risk, put it onto your gun, then sneak up on a group of zombies and "Holy AGRO! Agh... ah... too many zombies!" That is why they removed Silencers, they would mislead a player into doing something they didn't realize was stupid.

I guess when we get to beta we might have an issue then.

Why...........(movement and avatar control)
mercules replied to creativecole's topic in General Discussion
The times when I run into a tree instead of stopping are LAG. Otherwise I am pretty used to the ARMA II and DayZ controls and how they respond. Thus it is no longer a "Conscious" decision. That is what I am trying to say to you. You believe other games have control systems closer to RL because you have played them so long that is how you expect bodies in RL to react... they don't. I don't want to say L2P... but experience makes a difference. -
Why...........(movement and avatar control)
mercules replied to creativecole's topic in General Discussion
However, the reason you perceive clunkiness from button pushes is because of years of video games that ignored momentum having "trained" you that you move in that manner on screen. You are arguing that you want real life but when you play a video game that actually adds weight to the guns and avatar you feel "off" in your movement because previously everything was pressing W moves you forward at X speed, letting W up IMMEDIATELY stopped your movement. That has been the default in most FPS for years and years and your reflexes are trained to that. Now more and more games are adding in a bit of "weight" and momentum and it feels off. DayZ does have some control issues, but not as much as most of you think because some of it seems to be actual weight in your movement that you are not used to and not just lag and the normal issues maneuvering your hitboxes around objects that games have until they are cleaned up. It is an Alpha so you will have a good deal of that yet, but on top of that you have a different movement system that is not binary on/off 10kph or 0 but has acceleration and deceleration. -
ARMA II, the mod, ARMA III, and such all handle Night Vision fine so I can't see any reason this similar engine won't as well.
-
Why...........(movement and avatar control)
mercules replied to creativecole's topic in General Discussion
Yes, the controls are not exact yet and I think you might be on to something with thinking it could be desync or at least the communication with the server. Most of the time though the game responds to my commands exactly as I put them in. Every once in a while I get caught up or overstep but I also only play 1st person. I do use a TrackIR though and so some of my movement is head only and I think that makes everything a bit more smooth for me in that I can snap the avatar's head to the side and then turn the body or focus in and out just by leaning. I can glance down while my gun is pointed up or vise versa. It's possible that is making everything feel more "natural" for me. -
Why...........(movement and avatar control)
mercules replied to creativecole's topic in General Discussion
It's called "momentum" in real life. When I want to start running I don't IMMEDIATELY move forward. My body actually leans into the direction and gravity starts the process as my muscles start to push me in the direction I want to go. There is a reason when preparing to sprint runners lean forward and down, it is so that their legs can push backwards in a strong motion to get their momentum started in the right direction. You also don't stop instantly after running, you end up having to take a few last stops pushing against your current momentum. When turning while running you push hard at an angle that has you leaning into the turn. Run wind-sprints for a bit and tell me you start and stop instantly while running. It's all instinctive so you don't realize how much vectoring your body does to get you moving. -
What is it that makes the fps so bad? Engine? DX9?
mercules replied to Halven (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Not true, most AMD processors are worse than the equivalent Intel. I run an AMD GPU and Intel CPU and it runs the game well but a large number of people complaining about snapshots for framerates turn out to have AMD processors many of those the infamous "octo-cores. -
Which server(s)? Your server maybe? If so it is that the server isn't set up correctly yet and is not sending your data to the main hive properly.
