    Good ol' running up hills

Hey, why don't you crybabies go get a bunch of random shit and put it in a bag, and strap an axe to your back and carry a large rifle up the Appalachian trail for 8 miles and see if you can keep a heavy sprint going the entire time. The game is supposed to present a somewhat realistic scenario. Just be thankful you don't get forced motion blur from stamina drain like in some other games.

    The KOS conundrum, problem/solution.

The problem with KoS is that I am basically forced to do it by crazy care bears who just turbo run towards me yelling "FRIENDLYFRIENDLYFRLNENSD" and who violate my space against my wishes. If you're annoying, I don't care at all if you're friendly. I am going to do the thing that makes you go away from me.

    The golf analogy

DayZ is a bit like the game of golf, in that it is mostly a competition with yourself, while also being very much a competition with others in a large playing field. Like golf, DayZ can be incredibly boring at times and always takes a really long time to progress through the game. A single critical error is enough to lose either game. Both golf and DayZ are notable for their unique brands of color commentary. Peace and quiet is highly valued in both games, and distracting chatter and background noise can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Both games have "hackers," and the differences in meaning are negligible. Sniping a target from 1km and getting a hole in one produce roughly the same effect. That is, reverse downward fist pump of victory. And finally, in DayZ sometimes you go up to a player and call "friendly." In golf sometimes you pick the wrong club.

I haven't seen a single person for days..

I ran into a five man squad at NWAF - my first player encounter there. It was a lot of high intensity action at about 300-400m. I wounded at least 3 of them in the fire fight, two of them badly, but can confirm no kills. I was counter flanked when I made my way around the hangars to get a shot on the ATC tower. If I had switched to my Mosin at some point, I might have prevailed but maybe not :D
  6. I hear State of Decay is a great game for pussies who want to sing kumbaya or merely loot houses by themselves. EDIT: In all seriousness though, that game freaked me out, man. There is such a thing as too friendly.

Playing this game as an FPS is the worst.

Yep first person sucks balls pretty hard. This is perhaps the only reason I play in third person to begin with in both the mod and standalone, regardless of camera tricks.

    Players, communicte more please.

I am not a sucker as you suggest with this topic. If I have the advantage then sure I will call out if I feel like risking it all for some fun and laughs. But normally I am not anywhere near other players and if I see one by surprise they are getting perforated without hesitation. I've been at this too long to be all idealistic and shit. Someone is getting shot in a situation and if I have a gun available I am going to do my best to be the one who lives.

    Dead Drops

I had an idea for some sort of random dead drops to occur in place of or in addition to stuff like heli crashes. Step 1: Unique one of a kind note is spawned on server restart in a completely random location. Step 2: When player finds note, one must go to the six digit coordinates written on the map. Step 3: A dead drop package is found either at random or by the player holding the coordinates. It would not contain a massive amount of loot, but the random loot inside would all be in pristine condition with high chances for stuff that's useful together (pistol + ammo, assorted attachments, etc) Balance: The authenticity of such notes should always be questionable. Hostile players can give false coordinates to ambush locations. Anyone finding such a note would have to plan carefully to check the location by the next restart. I think it might not be a good fit for the kind of DayZ is going to be, much like the heli crashes may not be. But I think it was a good general idea worth sharing!
  10. "WHICH FUCKING GUY ARE YOU?!" "The guy in the orange raincoat!" "Okay, awesome I won't shoot you then!"

    How bad is DayZ's community?

There are two communities traditionally, and three communities now. The first community is the vanilla DayZ community. They love the mod as is and want to keep the standalone game a pure survival experience. The second community is the latter day DayZ mod community. These are the guys that KoS on Teamspeak with their squad on the 10000000 vehicle AS50 server. They want to make DayZ standalone less of a really unique and well balanced survivor simulation and more of a really sub par team deathmatch Call of Duty type thing. The newest community is the Standalone nubs who are still kind of getting used to the game, and base their ideas of what the game should be like off the bitter arguing of the two groups above.
  13. OP the needs of your friend shouldn't have any influence over game design. It is up to you to teach him whatever it is you know and up to him to decide if he can handle the learning curve. Don't bring me, the rest of the community and the game into it.
  14. You seem to think there is some point of view involved. Like this is one of those Obi-Wan Kenobi rationalizations. Let me clear it up for you. KoS is always okay. Combat logging is never okay. And there really frankly is not a lot of room for interpretation.
  15. Disagreeing with KoS is not an excuse for combat logging.
  16. Hello and welcome! I am writing this today out of concern for the game I love so much, as well as concern for some of the newer players among us now who might not be fully up to speed with the fact that DayZ has been a thing for a while now and already has a core set of pillars that set it apart from most other games that currently exist. I want to keep this short, so I will get to the point. If you make a topic about (off the top of my head) achievements and leaderboards and adding any other sort of assorted mechanics to the game that have a disruptive effect on immersion, you are forgiven. But that does not mean many of us vets are not facepalming and collectively groaning at the idea. Think of it like going to Japan. In Japan, you have to take your shoes off all over the place. If you are from another country and forget at some point, you will be forgiven. But still, the natives are going to jab at you and shake their heads in private. So please, before you make a topic complaining about running for 40 minutes, you need to realize that running for 40 minutes is a lot of what DayZ has been about for over a year now. And that is not going to change. So just...give the game some time before making huge suggestions that don't address immediate problems and bugs. And please take this in the spirit with which it is given. I am worried that the early state of this game makes it hard for DayZ to reveal itself to a new player. I think there are possibly many things that are not a part of DayZ that are mistaken for missing features to the uninitiated. We all read the disclaimer, but not everyone played the mod first. This is just my two cents. You can take or leave it. I just know I don't want any features or mechanics that add "strings" to the DayZ experience. And since I know such features are not likely to be implemented, I do not care to sift through so many such topics about them. -Dr. Z

Zombies should have MUCH more HP than humans

Right now they are like Mr. X from RE2 except when they walk through walls the walls give zero fucks.
  23. There was a devblog pre alpha where Dean ate some beans and pooped an empty can. He remarked on how his character pooped the can, and seemed to take pride in the mechanic for pooping cans. So why do we not poop cans? Does this functionality completely ravage the server? I want answers. Now.
