First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Vicco replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If the game has good "body awareness" 1P is fine. DayZ doesn't. Not that it's a big deal, until it hampers movement in tight spots. I appreciate "immersion," but that translates differently for different people. I don't miss "immersion" when in 3P. Same game. Just play a little differently. Games are always about adjusting to their demands. Without 3P, unless other changes are made, DayZ is clunky and unrealistic. The other changes would be the ability to climb and peek over walls. Crawl into hidey holes. Climb trees. You know. REAL LIFE. Here's a question for the "realism/immersion" advocates. Why do you get magna-vision, about 3-4 times better than the human eye, by right-clicking the mouse? Do you want that removed? Maybe you do. I like it myself, But it sure as hell isn't "realistic." No problem for me rolling with it. -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Vicco replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'll never buy the "realism" argument. DayZ was, is, and will always be a game to me. I've played on 1P only servers. The biggest difference with DayZ is you easily get stuck in doorways and other tight spots. Didn't seem realistic to me at all. Really bad "body awareness." So 3P works better for me. The big advantage with 3P is for snipers on rooftops looking over parapet walls. Of course since DayZ isn't realistic enough to provide any well-concealed sniper nests, that can be looked at as a "realism" trade-off. A lesser advantage is scoping out a building before entering. Not a big deal at all. Leaning in to peek in 1P has a high success rate. It's just another way to get an angle. But these are well known methods used in 3P, and so are the defenses. Caution, listening for footsteps, etc. Everything else is basically a wash. The vid showing one guy looking at another player over a wall fails to mention the other guy can do the same, and actually had the advantage of seeing the approach if he was on his toes. Another wash. It really gets down to personal preference. There's 1P servers out there for those who like that. -
Haven't tried no-PvP servers. And haven't played much on PvP servers for that matter. Since I was lone-wolfing, the only experience I had with PvP was getting spawn killed a couple times. I just started playing a couple months ago, then "the infection" with 1.7.7.1 descended. I quit playing public servers because of that. From the beginning I installed DayZCC, so me and my partner could roam and practice. That's what we play now, but I handle the infection with plenty of anti-biotics in the loadout. He joined public servers too, but really got pissed at the infection. Not PvP, just infection. I didn't like not worrying about PvP, so I added SARGE AI without telling him. Next best thing, or better, depending on how you view it. He got killed by the AI pretty quick, and told me to change the server password. Thought other players got in. I had to tell him, of course. We've played quite a bit, building one base on the south coast, and another at NW airfield. Scattered choppers at other spawn points. Got killed quite a few times by the AI, but we're now getting the best of them. We needed better weapons. I can adjust AI if they get too easy. Basic difference from public servers is no "stranger interaction." AI don't talk, they just KOS. And all the toys are ours. So anybody with a decent rig can install DayZCC for Chernarus. Free. The previous version can run other maps with DayZ 1.7.6.1. Namalsk, Taviana, etc. But of course no "stranger interaction," which to some is a very important part of DayZ. Personally, I don't miss killing guys, such as a poster here named KoS. That's a lot easier than dealing with a squad of AI trying to flank you, and I'm not subjected to inane side chat text or direct comms from 10-year olds. I think no-PvP can get boring pretty quick. Me and my partner like having the AI after us. We're looking forward to rejoining public servers when the infection gets dealt with. If ever.

Besides what the other guys say, get your landmarks, terminology and directions straight. I've seen plenty of teams talking apples and oranges. "I'm on the north side of the orange house." "What orange house? You mean the red one?" "I'm at the south wall of the barn." "Yeah, me too. But I saw you duck behind the north wall of the SHED." Stuff like that.

Shosho gave a tip in one of his vids on how he has his chopper waiting for him when he comes back after logging out. Parks it way out in the wilds, has a main rotor on him, and shoots out the chopper main rotor before he logs out. Makes sense, but I don't know how practical that is. His main deal is making vids.

Pretty Much Ignoring Stand-Alone - Anybody Else?
Vicco posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Still enjoying vanilla DayZ. Don't much care about stand-alone talk. Sure, I'm looking forward to trying it. But even with game releases with announced release dates, I don't spend much time thinking about them. Time passes at its own pace. Besides that, I saw Rocket demo the game not too long ago at that convention, Las Vegas I think. Really looked far off to me. "We're working on this." We're working on that." That was said about every aspect of the demo. Along with "We're planning on this, we're planning on that." Nothing wrong with that, and it's his job to hype it, and try to get it right. But it sure looked a far way off. At the same time I see guys here saying stuff like "next week," and generally pissing their pants in anticipation. Seems crazy to me. But hey, I'm not knocking it. Adds to the "excitement" I guess. So, do you think all the stand-alone talk is mostly guys who are bored with Dayz, or just guys who get more excited about a "future" game than I do? An actual release date - or even a date range - might get me more excited about it. As it is, it just seems like fantasy-land to me. That's why I generally ignore it. -
Nope. I don't accept it. I simply quit playing vanilla servers. Easy.

The real problem here is infection. Most people don't like it, for a number of reasons. 1. Lack of sufficient cure. 2. Glitching zeds. 3. The infection algorithms are flawed. I've been infected many times by "non-viral" zeds who glitched from 10 feet away, whacked me, and infected me. The axe is OP, and easy to master. You can stand inside any hospital and practice on the zeds outside all day long. It's useful inside where you have some room to maneuver. But you'll get infected. Then play the "eat meat" game until you die. A Winchester, even drawing more zeds to you, is a safer way to prevent infection. Of course for PvP it can draw other players. Still probably more safe than worrying about zeds infecting you and being distracted from noticing other players. Some people like the hell out of infection. I have no problem with that. Not me, and not many others. I put many hours into it. Didn't like it. Nobody even makes YT vids of vanilla any more. They were tailing off doing other mods anyway. There are multiple ways to make zeds a threat without infection. Double the hit cost. Double bleeding rate. Or anti-biotics less rare. Many, many ways. I walked away from public vanilla. Still love the vanilla game, but only play it on my own server, where I control the AB loadout. So everybody can play what they want. And express their own opinions. It is what it is.

Think you have to run Arma2 and OA from Steam first, to "register" them. That's what I did. As was said, Commander is best for keeping mods updated.

Most of the suggestions for reducing KoS
Vicco replied to Antjenks's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It does add to the discussion, I like Bunyun well enough. Good talker. But remember it's just talk. Here's an "early" Bunyun DayZ vid. Watch him go to town with KOS. It's always been a KOS game - from the beginning - for those who want to KOS. If it seems there's little friendly player interaction, it's because those players who wanted to do that left the game or changed their style after getting KOSed or back-stabbed one too many times. You can only control yourself as far as KOS. Bunyun didn't, or maybe he did. Racked up 10 murders pretty fast. Seemed to enjoy KOSing unarmed survivors. Except for his ideas about an entirely different game, the rest of his talk is basically bullshit. In that vid he's playing on a non-vanilla server, doing PvP. That's all fine. But he has no "credibility" talking about KOS or anything else in vanilla DayZ. It's just talk. This vid shows how he actually ACTED in the "good ole days." The ONLY thing that can reduce KOS frequency is game mechanic penalties. But nobody agrees how to do that, and the devs apparently like it as it is. There are pretty easy ways for the devs to do it, some mentioned in this thread, but they don't. Doesn't matter to me. It's fun to talk about it though. -
Pretty Much Ignoring Stand-Alone - Anybody Else?
Vicco replied to Vicco's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, agree with all that. Just never saw such "fervor" about a game before. I really think DayZ people are a different bunch. Great people. Except the ones who shoot me. They can go get fucked. -
Most of the suggestions for reducing KoS
Vicco replied to Antjenks's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How you explain the magic "respawning" of gear and PEOPLE?" Zeds teleporting 10 feet through solid walls? You best leave "magic" alone. That argument doesn't work. Just be honest and say, "I don't like it." And like I said, you get what the devs want you to have. It's a game. -
Most of the suggestions for reducing KoS
Vicco replied to Antjenks's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So make gear disappear upon death by murder. Murderers won't get squat. They'll still KOS, but won't have the "gear" excuse. Death by zed could be excluded from that, or not. As many here are always saying, "Don't get attached to your gear." Also, the devs could have 20 zeds spawn near a killer. His location is exactly known to the game. That could also reduce KOS. It's all very easy to do. Very simple, much more so than the new "infection." But that's not what the devs want. I don't know why it isn't obvious to everybody. They devs like it exactly how it is. -
This really happened. Me and 3 recently met "mates" sitting around a campfire just north of Balota. It was black out, no moon. We were all pretty green. One guy was recording for YT, so we were basically doing salutes, sitdowns, and side-to-sides. Good times. Oh yeah. We all had either a Winchester, Lee, or double barrel, and were Skyped up. A creepy voice came on direct from the darkness. "I seeee youuu." One of my mates said "Sit tight. I'll get him." Said he knew the direction from his 250 dollar headset. He crouched off into the darkness with his Winchester to flank him. After a while he said he the stalker was probably gone, and he was headed back to the campfire. Then he said "I think I see him!" The mate to my right said "There he is!" and opened up with his Lee. He killed our Winchester headphone guy, who cussed and logged out. Me and the guy recording the YT vid went to strip the gear from the headphone guy, who was right near the edge of the campfire light. As we started this, the mate near the campfire said "I hear something! Over here!" Me and the YT guy saw movement at the same time just behind the guy who had heard it. We both opened up, him with a Lee and me with a Winchester. But our guy was in the way, and we killed him. He cussed, and logged out. A pig ran through the campsite. That was what we heard and what me and the YT guy were shooting at. Not sure which of us killed the guy, but it wasn't me. Then we heard the voice in direct again, "I seeee youuu." The YT guy said "Fuck him. He's probably not armed. I'll get this gear." He went back to looting the headphone guy's stuff. I decided to put out the fire because it gave our stalker an advantage. Should have told the YT guy, but hey, we all make mistakes. As I'm about to click on "Put out the fire," the YT guy yells, "There he is! By the fire!" and breaks my legs with his Lee. I returned fire with my Winchester, and I'm pretty sure I got him, but I died pretty quick, so I'm not sure. I logged off, and deleted all 3 of those guys from Skype. Went solo. Still wondering if pigs can talk. I think so.

That's it. The higher pop servers are the least likely to close shop. Nothing is for sure in DayZ.

Difficulty spotting players/positioning based on gunshots
Vicco replied to PooPoo's topic in New Player Discussion
Surround sound and a decent directional headset makes a world of difference. I use a Corsair Vengeance 1500 headset. Though I like my old 15 buck stereo headset better for some reasons, it gives no idea of direction. The Corsair does that pretty well. It'll turn my head in the right direction. Then it's visual. If the shooter isn't moving, and well concealed, puffs of smoke are the big tell-tale. Surround sound and good headset might not be perfect, but it's a big jump in the right direction. In real life it's not always easy to pin down sound sources. Echoes, walls redirecting sound, etc. Seems the game might emulate that too, but I don't know. -
Me and my partner were in Cherno on the same lightly populated vanilla 1.7.7.1 server we always play on now. Just me and him. We check the south hospital, run around a little to the tents across the street and back to the hospital, to get a loot spawn, and score an anti-biotic and a couple blood bags. First anti-biotic we found in maybe 30 hours of game play, and the first in a hospital. Run back across to the tents, and find 2 anti-biotics spawned there in the closest big tent. Banner day. Reach the last small tent, and there's not one, not two, but THREE DMR's on the floor. We'd only found one in the same 30 hours. He was carrying an axe, and I had an M9SD. I told him I'd keep my Winchester, because it's my favorite for killing zeds. But I still had no ammo for it. He said, "Cover me, and I'll get 2 DMR's." He had to shuffle out some stuff from his backpack to fit the second one. A couple zeds walk in, and I get the first one, but the second one got close to him as I reloaded. He starts blasting it with the DMR he picked up. I swear, within 5 seconds there's 20 zeds coming in the door. He blasts a couple with the DMR, runs out of ammo, tries to take out his axe, and starts cussing as he gets knocked down. My M9SD runs out of the 3 mags I had, and I get knocked down. We're both bleeding heavily and infected. Could hardly see the doorway for all the zeds in that small tent with us. He got out by cussing a lot, and ran back to the hospital, shouting "Fuck, I'm dead. Fuck, I'm dead." I keep dancing, making breaks for the doorway. Think I was civil, just saying "Shit!" when I'd get knocked down. I was mostly wondering where I'd respawn, to be honest. Saw a space of light and went for it, got knocked down in the doorway, then up and clear, ran to the hospital. We bandaged, took antis and blood bagged each other. Don't know how we survived that. Both empty of blood and infected. But neither of us ever passed out. He was dazed, and said "We got to go back and get them DMR's. I didn't get any." I told him he had one on his back, and an empty G17 in his hand. I slapped his face, and said "Snap out of it soldier!" He was wearing camo. That's why I said that. He regained his composure, and we axed the zeds by the hospital, and snuck back to the tent. One of the DMR's had despawned, but we got the second one. So there's a big element of randomness in anti-biotic and DMR spawns. Looks like passing out is random too. But probably nothing random about what happens when you blast away with a DMR in Cherno. Nothing new there really, but an example how things can come together in one small place. And how you should never give up even when it looks REAL bad. Unless you're infected and have no antis. Then you should just commit suicide IMO. Anyway, there are 8 million stories in DayZ. This was one of them.

Anyone interested in going back to 1.7.6.1?
Vicco replied to Writhe (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Agree with everything you've said. I just won't play vanilla 1.7.7.1 public servers any more. Only play my own server, where I include plenty of anti-biotics in the loadout. Playing on my own server does little to help "the community." Still love the game, and appreciate the 1.7.7.1 changes, except for the infection. Infection just terribly slows down the game. Also replaces "excitement" with "depression." I suspect it also turns many others away before they get much of a start. There are a multitude of simple ways to make zeds a more serious threat than they were. More zeds spawning, more damage on hits, more bleeding., etc.,etc. Different means of curing infection. Gee, any of that would be more interesting and challenging than a death sentence. Like you. I care enough about the game to keep bitching about what I find unacceptable. But when there was no response to the many complaints about infection, I quit playing the public game soon enough. I expect my bitching won't last too long either. It's not in my hands, but I still control my feet, and will walk away when I want to. -
Why does crap like this exist?
Vicco replied to OfficerRaymond's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Tripe is tripe, and not worth talking about IMO. But speaking of text side chat itself, I've seen some while watching a YT vid that is the best part of the vid. And the video maker had no role in it. Sometimes a transition/cut occurs, and I find myself saying, "Damn, why are you cutting out the best part of your video?" -
Server OFF due to the amount of servers there are, Use this as a TIP and don't get one untill standalone/another map comesout
Vicco replied to nL.Jason's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Hey, you tried. It was all in the timing. Good luck with future endeavors. -
Yup. I quit playing on public vanilla servers. My partner is an excellent axe man, but he got tired of getting infected. And nearly always dying from the infection. "Excellent axe man" is my subjective opinion of his skills. He's a very good and long time gamer. But I'm sure he's NOWHERE near as good as the SUPREME axe men I see replying to you. My God they are good. Of course they don't mind endlessly watching zombie patterns, crawling around in the dirt, and spending 15 minutes to loot a barn to score that excellent flare. My partner just won't play this kind of game. Me either. And being Gods, these SUPREME axe men never have a viral glitch and infect them just before they strike with the axe, or after they strike with the axe, or teleport from outside of axe range to infect them. Axe Gods suffer no such indignities. Me and my partner have no issue with this. We are mere mortals, and accept that Gods get treated differently. So the Gods have their game, and we have ours, on my own vanilla server. Well, the loadout isn't vanilla. We spawn with a 24 slot Coyote. With 24 anti-biotics. Infection problem solved. We don't use many anti-biotics, because as you suggest, we now disdain the axe. It just gets you infected. Since we have all the anti-biotics we need, we spend our time searching for ammo. Ammo to kill zeds. We kill them in the open, leaving zed corpses scattered everywhere we go. We lure them into buildings and mow them down, filling rooms with their finally dead bodies. It's rare they get close enough to infect us. And it's fun doing it. Zeds are abominations. Not to be avoided, but to be killed whenever seen. That's what REAL MEN do in the so-called "zombie apocalypse." They take back their world from the mindless, filthy zombies, and procreate to repopulate the world with their own kind. Doesn't have to be in that exact order either. (Will Rocket implement fucking in the stand-alone? I mean, a zombie apocalypse won't stop that, right? Just a question for those always talking about "immersion.") The only time we're particularly careful around zeds is when we are running low on ammo and collecting more ammo to kill more zeds, and to kill the random AI bandits we encounter. The AI bandits are much more dangerous than the zeds, just as bandits were on public servers with the "old" DayZ. DayZ is for everybody. Some have fun playing as we do. Others enjoy crawling around in the dirt trying to avoid infection. I say live and let live. You can find 1.7.6 version servers, so go for that. Or any non-vanilla mod. One with a lot of vehicles could work, because vehicles are excellent protection from infection, and good for killing zeds. You are far from alone in not enjoying the current vanilla mod. Hardly anybody has made YT vids with it. Those who tried didn't last long before dying from infection. They could do it, but nobody would watch it, as it would be excrutiatingly boring. Some like it as it is. They make their own arguments.

Have you ever seen anything like this?
Vicco replied to jubeidok's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Could be I'm missing some head shots. I get a little nervous around infected, even with all my anti-biotics. I'll try turning on FRAPS so I can confirm. Sure seems I've pumped almost a magazine of M9SD into an infected's head before he goes down. Maybe he keeps hitting after he's already dead? Maybe M9SD takes more than one head shot? Anyway, I'll test and look at it as a "learning experience." Could save a lot of ammo if you're right. -

Vicco replied to jubeidok's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Glitches you say? I just took down an infected with an AK, point blank range. All center body shots, belly to chest. Took about 20 rounds. Also taken as many as 6 head shots to bring one down. No big deal. It was on my own vanilla server, and we have about 100 anti-biotics stashed. I set the loadout to spawn with a 24 slot Coyote containing 24 anti-biotics. So infection is a non-issue. Vanilla 1.7.7.1 anti-biotic spawn is sparse. We've found 3-4 in about 30 hours of play, with a lot of loot farming. Luck plays in big time. Grocery and hospital are the only places we've found them, so far. -

I only looked for "official" DayZ servers, which is the only thing I played. Ping of 150. Got about 160. Origins about 850. But I don't know what "official" means with Origins. You're right about number of servers. Unticking the "official" box gets +1300 DayZ. Still looks to be more players on Origins from what I see. Halfway down the DayZ list the servers are empty. As I said, I never played Origins. I hope the stand-alone does well.
