The original DayZ mod that sparked the popularity of Arma 2 is pretty much dead. On the other hand, the mods known as Epoch and Overpoch which are just improved versions of Wasteland with zombies are all the rage these days. They probably will be for quite some time, I expect them to still be somewhat populated 6 months down the line. The question is, do you want to play a mod where there are several assault rifles in every barn, MRAPs are a common sight and pretty much everyone has a helicopter?

The standalone is the $30 DayZ you buy on steam, based on the mod. It was made into a game to allow for a lot more possibilities that couldn't happen in a mod.

You just have to move your arma 2 and arrowhead folders into your steam>steamapps>common folder, but I guess it's too late. -
Isn't fear a core instinct? Humans are hard-wired to fear certain things, without even knowing what they are.

I'm pretty sure you can just move them to your steam>steamapps>common folder because they are the exact same regardless of whether they are registered with steam, then launch with steam so it overrides your old CD key with the new steam one. -
I always figured the random noises were just a bug. It makes no sense for me to be hearing random slurping and eating noises when I'm alone in the forest.

Is the DayZ mod that we all know and love officially dead? I can't find a single populated server that isn't some gross deathmatch variation.

What servers are you trying? You must make sure you have the right mods for the right servers, there are different variants of the DayZ mod such as Epoch. -

I never have this problem. Even in the towns infamous for KOS kiddies I easily find a lot of friendly players. To maximize chances of survival, don't instantly expose yourself to every player you see. Talk to them when they can't see you and respond according to their reaction. -

That's weapon sway. If you want to reduce it, stay still and catch your breath before taking aim.

If you would rather be shot on sight than mugged, I don't think this game is for you. Player interaction is part of what makes DayZ awesome, and being robbed is a big part of player interaction. Not to be rude, but perhaps you would rather play something like ArmA 2 wasteland. Same map, all killing.

Your resolution is set really low, I think it says 640x400 rendering resolution, but it says its at 200% so your actual display resolution is 320x200(the exact same as the photo). Try to change the resolution to 1920x1080 or whatever your laptop's screen supports in the config files. Documents > DayZ > DayZ.cfg You want to change Resolution_W and Resolution_H according to your monitor's native resolution.

You probably didn't uninstall the ArmA II config folder your documents. I'm quite sure that it won't cause any harm as it just contains your game settings, profile name, etc.

Most people probably wouldn't be armed with a rifle at all. But this is DayZ, currently a very inaccurate representation of what a zombie apocalypse would be like.
