Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.
Dagwood replied to Ham_Sandwich27's topic in General Discussion
Hopefully, with the need to boil water, at least the thirst aspect of the nutrition system will be a bit more involved. I think cooked food speeding up the healing process or even just bringing up your core temperature would also improve gameplay. If the devs want to keep the "cod peasants" happy, I think the thing to do would be to allow us to continue drinking soda and cold canned food like we can now, but also reward the players that choose to take better care of their character. I think this could be accomplished with higher shock cap when you eat and drink healthier, or maybe faster health/blood regeneration. That way, the people who don't have the patience to spend 5 minutes an hour on cooking/boiling/cleaning don't necessarily have to, but the players that do will be better off for it and not feel like they're wasting time. -

So if people think the hunger and thirst system is.... Over-bearing, what would they suggest as far as balancing? Food being even more rare and hunger and thirst setting in at a slower rate? In my opinion, slowing time down like this would mean also slowing down healing time, the time it takes to eat, the time it takes to regain stamina, the time it takes to open cans, etc, etc. Thinking before you speak is a great way to avoid being hypocritical. -
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I tgought they removed the ability to do this. As far as I know, all cargo pants and jackets take up at least 4 slots in your inventory now. If I am wrong, please let me know.

Several people here have claimed to have checked multiple villages and starved to death before finding the supplies they need. I'm curious as to whether these villages are strung along the east coast or are interior towns. If they are the former, I think you deserve your early grave. Every newspawn starts on the coast and you think that you're going to be able to find anything there? Insane. But, if in fact the interior towns are lacking in sufficient supplies on experimental (I know this is not the case on stable), there MIGHT be some need for tweaking before it hits stable. If any of you played the mod around the 1.8 mark, you will remember when the infection rate was jacked way up (25% chance from bloody zombies). This, coupled with the low spawn rate of antibiotics, enraged players like the OP. "What do you mean I have to struggle to survive until I find antibiotics!!!? Waah just let me roam and kill unhindered!!" But, within a few short weeks, everyone learned how to cope and the whiners moved onto the next topic to whine about. Food and warm clothing scarcity is one of those whiner buzz topics. It increases difficulty but doesn't give instant gratification like KOS does. I wouldn't get worked up over posts like this. Honestly the OP is just embarrassing himself by refusing to admit that he needs more practice and experience to become proficient at dayz. -
Put dayz on my new comp, can't get "Double tap W" to run fast anymore !?!

Go into your key bindings and assign it to turbo or fast-forward or something. I always have to try one or two different assignments before I get it right. -

If surviving as a fresh spawn was nearly guaranteed, why even incorporate it into the game at all? Why not just spawn us with matches and a splitting axe and a pistol? And if that is the experience you are looking for, I would suggest trying arma 3 breaking point. I played it recently and it's a lot of fun. But, it is not the "anti-game" that Rocket promised us. Think about it: if every asshole that was confronted with zombies and life after electricity could cope and equip himself to survive long term, why the fuck did chernarus or even the rest of society collapse? And if you're not finding adequate food and supplies to survive, learn from your mistakes!!! Don't just come to the forums and claim the game is in some way flawed. "Failed the exam: science should be rewritten so I can pass the exam!" I see this logic everyday on these forums and it saddens me that these whiny brats are our future. When confronted with a challenge, they expect the challenge to be removed. I pray to Rocket and the other gods that the development team is as disappointed in these whiners as I am, and that their demands for an easier game go unanswered. -
The problem is that everyone is hungry for the best items as well as desiring pvp. The harder it is to find uber gear, the more punishing it is when you die to pvp. What they don't realize, is that creating that relationship between rare gear and "permadeath" is the main source of tension in dayz. Without that tension, the game spirals into boring, predictable pvp that stays stagnant. Think of it this way: that AK101 that you spent 3 hours finding is important to you. You don't want to lose it. But at the same time, it gives you an advantage over players with easier to find rifles. So while those top tier players are harder to kill, they have more to lose.

You're saying the server restarted and the crashsite was still there? Or are you saying you logged in after a restart and the crashsite appeared for the first time? I ask because as far as I know, crashsites redeploy to new locations on server restart. This would mean that the crashsite you hit must have undoubtedly been unlooted, and you were just unlucky and found nothing.

Mookie and officer25 have made my dreams finally become a reality. I now possess... an M4 with a red dot sight. Now I can retreat into the fringes and become paranoid again :)
-
The PU and acog are also midrange scopes.

Mookie, I have recently made the switch to regular so that I could trade for one of your coveted M4s should the opportunity arise. For the first time, I possess an item on your want list (sort of). I have two badly damaged pristine cases!... I know you would prefer pristine protector cases, but these two are all I have. But, to make up for the poor repair of these two, I am willing to offer other wares. I have: Blue camo top(p) Mp5 (P) AKM+ 2 drums (not that you would use them, but perhaps in a tent for a future trade) Can opener (P)lol I also have a very well equipped hardcore character. His gear is available as well if you are interested. I know I do not have too much to offer, but I thought I would extend an offer to you anyway. If you are interested in my offer, or would like additional details, send me a PM.

Smersh Vests: Holy grail? + Mi-8 crash sites in general.
Dagwood replied to OmpaLompa's topic in General Discussion
And after you've invested 20+ hours into finding one, what are you going to do with it? Go pvp in the south and east? Continue hitting military bases until somebody gets the drop on you? I'd imagine most Smersh vest owners are too afraid to log in for more than an hour at a time, avoiding towns and mil bases all together. This does create a lot of attachment to your character, (assuming you aren't in a highly organized pvp clan that can just recycle your equipment back to you) which can bring a lot of tension to the game. -
Try and be patient, or make the switch to the mod. The mod has many features that haven't made it to the standalone yet. I wish game development was faster too. But it's like reading a book while it's being written.

Playing without a mic (or when you can't use a mic)
Dagwood replied to Death By Crowbar's topic in General Discussion
Just had kind of an odd idea... What if you role played your character as a mute? You carry a long-winded note around with you explaining that you cannot speak and that having another survivor with you would make handling player confrontation much easier ie an invitation to team up. You'll still have the issue of players not trusting you because you aren't able to announce yourself as being a nonhostile quickly when confronted, but there are ways around this. Cuing your mic in known patterns (think SOS) while you friendly dance or whatever before you hand them the note could work with some survivors. Although your situation definitely makes life harder, I would, if I were you, do my best to tie it into your gameplay in a fun way instead of allowing it to only slow you down in a purely negative way. Good luck! -
Keys need to have the server that they belong on "marked" on them somehow. Otherwise we'll be collecting keys for hidden bases on random servers we'll never find. If you kill an uber geared out guy with a clan name, it would be cool to have the name of his home server marked on his keys that you loot from his corpse. This way you could join that server and start snooping around.

Think about how much gear you're lugging around on the verge of exhaustion. Of course you'd run like a big fatty

How are we supposed to play the game right now?
Dagwood replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
That post was directed at the people who claim that a game millions of people are partaking in every day is unplayable. If you want to share negative feedback about broken features in this alpha, i suggest you mention that you understand what alpha means. And if you or the others you are defending "have better things to do" than do some leg work (watch a fucking w0bO video), why should that affect the learning curve for the people that do feel inclined to actually invest some time into mastering dayz? Dayz is not a casual game. Dayz is not for everyone. Dayz is supposed to be uber hard. Stop using accessibility as an excuse for dumbed down difficulty. -
Smersh vest and M4 will be your most desired, guaranteed

Dagwood replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
I've never played a game where so many people place the blame of their own inability upon the game itself. If other people are able to play the game and enjoy it, despite the difficulty, perhaps you should practice more or do some research online to figure out why they are succeeding where you are failing. It's like struggling to learn algebra and blaming the teacher or the book when the rest of the class is doing just fine. With an attitude like that, you're never going to learn to enjoy a game like dayz. If you want a game that is easily accessible for everyone that picks it up, I suggest you stick to AAA titles. -
Not to mention these are surplus mosins we are firing! I'd be ecstatic about landing a torso shot at even 300 meters with something that worn down.

Don't give them the opportunity to hurt you. Putting your weapon on the ground or even not having it drawn makes you an easy target. Approaching someone as a friendly and as a bandit should be almost identical. "Don't move! I have a rifle pointed at your head. I just want to talk, etc." If they don't comply or make any aggressive moves, you kill them, loot them, and move on. Dying over and over hoping to meet a friendly player is stupid. Keep the situation in control, and don't give them the chance to hurt you. People tend to respect wary survivors much more than the blindly trusting ones.
-
People forget how few military structures there were in the mod. Two barracks on the entire map. TWO BARRACKS ON THE ENTIRE MAP. You don't realize how good you've had it. I can't wait for the river of tears in months to come when pistols with mags are a good find :)

I've been doing this since hunting and cooking were implemented. You won't notice a difference. Now as far as using a bow to accomplish all of this: not my cup of tea. Hunting is too easy at the moment but it was be reworked soon enough.
