    Reaction On Dying

Depends on the situation. Relieved, if I've lived too long and get to start again. Pissed off with myself if I die in a firefight I should have won. Furious if I die to a server hopper logging in behind me. Sad when my character is eaten by the Hive God. The day I don't feel anything if I lose a character in DayZ, is the day I quit the game.

    Today's Pending Update.

Server hopping until you find what you want is not playing the game. This is a scavenging game often called a hiking simulator. Exploring around looking for loot is exactly what the game is about. The loot spawning mechanics need work, yes, but I'd rather have a system that encourages you to move like now than something you can just camp for loot, like loot piling in the mod. And there's only 6 spots if you count the entirety of NWAF as one. The distance from the south barracks to the Bashnya jail is longer than Vybor base to south barracks, so I would personally count it as three sites: South barracks, Eastern barracks/ATC, and military camp/Bashnya.

    Today's Pending Update.

Why not? You are playing a game with a huge map, but don't want to use most of it. Anyway, if you want military spawns you should be on the western side of the map. There you have maybe 8 groups of military buildings, each no more than 2.5km from the other. Go there instead of hopping.

    Today's Pending Update.

People are missing the quickly part of the patch notes. Switching servers once or twice in a play session due to lag, lack of loot or joining friends is unlikely to have much of a penalty. Joining 10 servers in 30 minutes is.

    Is less zombies actually more?

Yes, I completely understand what you mean. In the mod, zombies were a constant, something you expected and just adapted to. They became boring after a while. In standalone, you never know if there's going to be a zombie or not, and sometimes I've been surprised by one I had not seen. It would be really good if, once they add more (and respawning!) zombies, they could make them more clustered and random. So there's a good chance an isolated building or even a small town will be empty. But then there's a group of ten zombies in the next one. Or a horde chilling out in one side of the city while the other is clear. Make the zombies an unknown element, not just part of the landscape.

    Stealth anti server hop?

Did you loot your backpack from a corpse, by any chance?

Combat failure/tips: Learning the hard way

Assuming you had a escape route, you should have used it when you ran out of bullets. The surprise element is gone by then, and you are not going to win a straight firefight with an M4 with a Mosin. Retreat, relocate, maybe come back from a different direction.

    Corpses and Mirrored Inventory Items

Yes, this has happened to me, with a fireaxe and with a backpack. I think my backpack I looted off my own corpse is haunted, because this morning it had items I'm sure I had dropped last night, and a box of 7.62 ammo I don't remember picking up. Maybe there's another guy out there who also looted my corpse.

The reduction of loot in militarised zones

The funny thing is M4's are not rare now. Since the patch, with no server hopping (but some server restarts, and some time on a night server), my group has seen 3 M4's, 1 mosin (well, 2 if you count the one that vanished as I painted it), and exactly zero shotguns. One of the M4s was at the berezino school and other at the boat, so it's not like we are hitting military buildings only.

Maybe nerf the healing a little?

The whole blood and health mechanic feels wrong to me, for this kind of game. I'd rather keep it regen the way it is, or maybe easier, but add more meaningful wounds. Our characters shrug off gunshots like they are nothing. Get shot by a 30 cal? Just bandage, maybe pop some painkillers and good to go. This is stupid. Wounds should take a while to heal and require attention in the meantime. Regarding the healthy status, has anyone gained it since the patch? My usual method of rice and water has failed me since the last update and the "rebalancing" of stomach capacity.
  11. If this is the same as Arma2, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, that's wrong. At a distance, the engine renders grass as a flat surface above the ground, so people crouching through the grass appear to sink into the ground. DayZ backpacks, however, tend to stick out of the grass anyway.
  12. First of all, the hardcore and regular servers are on different subhives now. Regular has your old characters (rolled back a few days), while it seems hardcore got a brand new hive. Additionally, from my testing last night, I think some hardcore servers were not connecting to the hive properly. One of them gave me my old character, still connected to the regular hive, then went offline. Others gave me random new spawn points. Later I started getting the same location in different hardcore servers, started playing, and sure enough, it was saved to the others. I suspect the issue with characters not saving is a server configuration problem more than a patch problem. But it would be nice for a dev to acknowledge that issue, as well as the rollback. If it's expected, then it's normal for alpha, but if it caught the devs by surprise, they probably should do something about it.
  13. My character has been reverted to its version of last saturday night. No big deal, but I want to make sure it's intended. Others on reddit are reporting the same. Also, hardcore/regular servers appear to still be on the same hive. I logged on one, moved, jumped to the other, and I was in my new position.

    Steam name gone, character gone

Me, and a bunch of other people, just logged on to characters a few days old. Something weird just happened to the hive.

    Should this be called fun?

I agree the game is ultimately about PVP, but right now we are missing the reasons to PVP. There's no chance to hoard stuff, no bases or cars to defend or attack. No conflict generators except the simple joy of PVP. Anyway, the only thing that makes DayZ PVP so awesome is that it takes so long to respawn and regear. DayZ mod ruined all shooters for me. Sure, I can jump on deathmatch and it's kinda fun, but if I die I'll just respawn and lose nothing. No adrenaline. In DayZ, just spotting a player makes my heart jump. Trying to sneak up on someone, I have to fight every instinct that tells me to turn away and run. Winning a firefight is exhilarating, while the "You are dead" screen leaves me angry and sullen. That kind of emotional reaction, good or bad, is what keeps drawing me back to DayZ and its PVP in particular. You may think that the boring parts are not worth your time. Maybe you would prefer a deathmatch game with instant respawn. There's nothing wrong with that. Some peope enjoy slot machines, while others play high stakes poker.
  16. I got in last night. First spawn was in Three Valleys at night. Ran to Msta (hard to do at night, but managed it), but it was already looted. Then some guy killed me with a shovel. Second spawn was in Elektro. I went west towards Cherno (since it's always empty in the stable build). Every building along the way was looted, including the supermarkets in the apartments to the north. That's where I gave up and went to bed with my character starving. Just tried again, and the servers had reset, found some food, but overall it seems there's less loot spawning.
  17. I usually get a solid black monitor on night servers, making it unplayable. But two days ago, the server I was in restarted, and when it came back it was nightime, with a nearly full moon high above me. I could see clearly for miles. So the moon makes a huge difference, it's just not always out.
  18. I agree with you on starlight, but the full moon in DayZ is too bright. With the moon out, it's like playing in daytime, but without colors. Even with a full moon, IRL, I find it very hard to focus on details from far away.
  19. Steam just auto downgraded me back to 0.30.114008, even tho I have experimental beta enabled. Did the update get pulled, or are they just tired of people trying to connect to internal testing servers?
  20. Coding-wise? Are you crazy? They already have code for "can of beans + can opener = open can of beans". That exact same code can be used for "Spray paint + mosin = painted mosin". At most you need to account for ammo and attachments. Code that keeps a character in the server after the player disconnects is far more complex and risky. It has to keep the character connected to the player's hive profile, even when the player is off the server, to start with.
  21. After recovering our stolen Ural, as well as an ATV, a few friends flipped over the ATV. Well, ATV on its side, big truck next to it, the solution was obvious:

    Sniper rifles

Shooting a scoped rifle at something far away is EASY. Especially if you get any kind of support under the gun (bipod, etc). Anyone can do well after a bit of practice. Shooting through iron sights at a moving target 30m away with your life in inmediate danger is HARD. Most people would die on their first try. Please remove all pistols and non-sniper rifles from the game. It's unrealistic and no civilian would be able to use them.
  23. Honestly, I don't see the ghillie as such a huge advantage over camo. The ghillie is sightly too bright so it only really works when prone. With camo, you can crouch with your back to a tree and be close to invisible from a distance. Do the same in ghillie, and you are bright green on dark green background. Let us change the colour of civilian clothes a bit (paint, dyes, or even just putting dirt on it), and it will all be more reasonable.

    Need Help Locating Tower!

Vysota hill, just north of Cherno?
  25. A century of competition pistol shooting would disagree with that. The two-handed grip is something relatively recent. Before that, proper shooting technique only used one hand, and in the Olympics competitions, it still does. Obviously, with only the strong hand involved, so no dual wielding.
