Have you ever played on experimental on patch day? There's only 20 servers or so for the entire world, thousands of players who want to try the new patch, and they don't always restart often. Even if there's only 40 (100 tonight) people on the server at one point, there's been several hundred unique players since the server came up. Experimental players are also a bit more experienced, and less inclined to stay on the coast. Anywhere you can think of, someone has thought of before. Anything within starving range of the spawns is gone in the first hour or two. It's incredibly intense, but somewhat frustrating.

I enjoy moonlit night servers, but they are harder and harder to find. Without a moon... I tried to play in one recently, without a flashlight. It was ok at first, because the street lamps in the town worked. But then I went into Piano House, far from the street lamps. I couldn't find the door again. After 5 minutes of bumping around in the dark of that house, I gave up and switched to a day server. Still, the nighttime atmosphere is special, and those who have never tried it don't know what they are missing.

Please Bring Back The Stary Sober Military Tents
Jack Dant replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
The tents are not so much gone as replaced by the military camp 1.4 km to the west. -
Weird, I've found more LR scopes than PU since a few patches ago. I used to find plenty of the in the pubs, but not anymore.

I acknowledged that in my post. But geography does not equal setting. Geography is just the layout of the terrain and towns, not the history, language and culture of the area. If I take a map of British Columbia, change the town names to Russian, and make up a storyline with references to Siberia, you should expect vodka, not maple syrup.

Not even close. Yes, I know the topography is based on Czech Republic. But consider: 1. It's on the sea. The Czech Republic is landlocked. 2. It borders Russia. The Czech Republic is 2 countries away from Russia, and doesn't even border a post-soviet state. 3. Writing is Cyrillic, pointing to a Russian or closely related language. The Czech language uses latin script and is only remotely connected to Russian. 4. If one accepts the Arma2 campaign as part of the setting, it's also a country caught between NATO and Russian influence. I don't think Russia has much of an influence in Czech affairs anymore. From those four points, I'd say it's either a much smaller Ukraine, or a more russianized Georgia.

5 min cooldown for switching servers is way to little
Jack Dant replied to smoq2's topic in General Discussion
The mod had respawning loot, and server hopping was still rampant. And that even tho you could force infinite respawning loot via loot piling. The combination of loot respawn, logout timer and server switch penalty may, but only may, reduce it to reasonable levels. -

Jack Dant replied to smoq2's topic in General Discussion
Yes, because people logging on to empty servers to gear up and then switch to a full server for PVP is exactly what we should be encouraging. -
Not quite, they were unofficially down. For them to be officially down would require some official announcement of the downtime (say on twitter)
-
Well, the forums were down for around 13 hours going by the gap in posts (nothing between 5:40pm yesterday and 7:20am today). In that time, the dev team was tweeting as usual, without a single mention of the forum problem. I fully suspect not one of them looked at the forums in all that time, so they didn't notice. I mean, I understand this forum is full of crap and a nightmare to follow. But it's still the official one.

Daytime servers with a low population. Or, since providers will reset the server time with each restart, learn what time they reset to, and check the time in server list. -
Patch 0.35 coming today, when do we get the patchnotes?
Jack Dant replied to Odahviing's topic in General Discussion
Well, for a change, in experimental the sawed-off takes 4 horizontal slots in a backpack instead of 5, but I'm unsure when this happened. I have barely played 0.34 stable. It's nice, because it now fits in the improvised bikpiks. -
You can already find weapons in several houses (red brick, piano house) and nearly all barns. According to the dayzdb data, which comes directly from gamefiles, the shotgun should spawn in a lot of houses and cars, and in the deer stands that are all over. It doesn't because many of those spawn points are not working at all currently.
-
Loot is currently quite broken, as most houses don't spawn the stuff they are supposed to spawn according to the game files. The result is there's only a handful of good houses worth looting if you are in a hurry. That's bad. But until the loot starts respawning (should be soon according to rocket's twitter), I wouldn't worry too much about the balancing. I have a feeling the current situation is a side effect of having all the loot spawn at once. That probably forces them to not spawn in some places for performance reasons. Personal theory, that one, but it makes sense.

How much authenticity is too much?
Jack Dant replied to LaughingJack (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
That sounds fun ;) Well, if you want to avoid that, you would have to give long-surviving characters some sort of advantage. I still think keeping the healthy status for a while should give you improvements in fitness and disease resistance, once stamina and infections are implemented. And beards, of course. -

Exactly. Getting shot or stabbed is no joke IRL, and would be much worse in a situation without working healthcare. Certainly not as easy as bandaging and eating a lot. -

Look ma! rocket replied to me on reddit! Now that's out of the way... as I mentioned on reddit, I would love some way to model the internal damage of bullets. Something that makes even a not inmediately lethal shot a huge pain in the ass. Internal bleeding comes to mind, where you lose blood slowly for a while, and have to either hope it heals or tranfuse. Globalization, globalization, globalization. You can easily buy a 10/22 or any number of american made .22 semiautos in Europe. I don't see why it would be impossible to find one in Chernarus. Unless you go out for drinks for Miley every week, and you meant unlikely instead of impossible. If so, tell her to stop making an ass of herself. -
Ok. Im pretty sure a single, clear, easily reproducible example would be enough.

People, if you know the exact location, please post it (grid references, screenshots, even a video) to the feedback tracker. The devs can't be asked to test every inch of hill around Elektro.
-
If you think about it, the loot in firestations fits police stations better (handguns, holsters, handcuffs). Since there are no police stations in Chernarus, except for the new town, we can assume the same building houses both.

Is Sniper too powerfull ? how did the mod handle this?
Jack Dant replied to Foolz's topic in New Player Discussion
As I said, in Arma at least people hiding in grass "sink" into the ground. making them harder to see. Not perfect, but not useless either. I think I've seen this effect in DayZ, but I'm not sure. I have never, in the mod or the standalone, been spawn sniped like that before even loading. Have you? And RL snipers don't have specific targets or missions, that's movie stuff. Their jobs are scouting and harassing the enemy. That often means passing on a shot because your intel is more valuable than the kill. And guess what, people used to play like that in DayZ mod. -
Design age is mostly irrelevant to accuracy. Today many custom hunting rifles are made with mauser 98 pattern rifles, be they actual recycled military actions, or newly built ones. And they are as accurate as any modern design. The tolerances, bedding, and barrel wear matter a lot more. Not to mention ammo. The mosin's current accuracy, by the way, seems about right judging by Gews' thread. It's the compensator and bipod increasing accuracy directly instead of recoil and sway that's broken. And rocket has already said that's a temporary thing (for the compensator and I assume the bipod too). But it seems very likely Bohemia will introduce a CZ 550/557 at some point. Czech companies sticking together and all that. Those should be more accurate than the mosin, as they are IRL.

Jack Dant replied to Foolz's topic in New Player Discussion
I have not tested this in DayZ. But in Arma 2/3, at a distance, grass is rendered as an opaque layer on top of the ground. So people laying in the grass at those ranges would to "sink" into the ground through a scope. But backpacks are usually hard to hide. -
If you can do that standing, off hand, with a factory M4, well, you should probably go for the olympics. With a competition rifle you would probably win. And the 7.62x54 has over 3500J (~2600 ft-lb) of muzzle energy, a good 70% more than an M4. But muzzle energy is a very bad measure of stopping power. It places a lot of emphasis on the muzzle velocity, since it depends on its square, making small and fast rounds seem more effective than big and slow ones. Yet, the people who actually need a lot of stopping power, those who hunt animals that don't take kindly to being hunted, they usually go for the opposite. Big slow cartridges, and heavy for caliber bullets inside that. Bullet momentum is a better approximation of stopping power. And you can take it further by including bullet diameter. By those measures, the 7.62x39mm is a good 50% better than the 5.56x45mm. And the mosin miles ahead.
