    The Lone-Wolf playstyle

Now I understand the fun of having a group of guys to play with and using organised tactics to be as effective as possible but ever since I first set up the DayZ mod for Arma 2 I've ALWAYS gone solo. Back when hunting and cooking your own meat was possible I would get some beans and cokes off the coast than gtfo inland where I would hang between Stary Sobor and Novy Sobor. Always alone I would play extended sessions just scouting a heavily trafficked area (South-East of NWAF) and occasionally engage targets with either the AKM if one 1 adversary or the M16 SD (the silencer perfect for remaining undetected and confusing enemy groups as they either logged or went down. Always opening fire from a forest with minimum 200 yards. I could hunt to keep my blood up and was a happy camper. I find that playing alone and stalking others for 20-30 minutes is fun, forces me to use tactics and above-all heightens the tension and survival horror-vibes I love from DayZ. Staying alive for as long as possible is my objective, beyond getting the best loot (SKS over M4 or Mosin all day!). Mugging people has been a fucking amazing and totally unique gaming experience, it's one thing robbing someone when you're with a group but when you have a guy handcuffed and you're going through his shit ultra tense because no one has your back. Generally, I avoid others but for the fun of it sometimes I shoot a round right next to a guy and watch him run for cover and try to figure out wtf is going on. ehehehe!! With the standalone I've been doing pretty much the same thing, with my gun of choice being the SKS and (I hope) the .22 LR sporter when it get's buffed. Who else plays like me and what are some tips or stories you have to share? Only real minus is that getting KOS'd sucks.. USE THE MIC!!! TL;DR Who plays Lone-Wolf only? Are you friendly, KOS or a mix of both? Any stories or tactics to share?
  2. When the Sporter .22 (aka Ruger 10/22) was added I was thrilled cuz it's really one of the best and most practical survival guns in the world. I found the 25 round magazine and was happily going about my business near Stary Sober and a Mosin round landed right near from the hill over-looking the military tents. A shoot-out took place between me and 2 guys with an M4 and a Mosin. Now I landed at least 7-9 shots into the M4 guy cuz he was closer and it didn't do shit!! I ended up taking down the M4 guy with a 1911 before getting shot by the guy carrying the Mosin which I couldn't find till it was too late. On YouTube theres a video where a guy puts like 2 mags into a bandit and it fails to even knock the other guy unconscious! The video's pretty funny, the guy with the .22 ends up having to use an axe to win the fight. So this takes me to my main point. Everyone has this misconception that the .22 LR cartridge is weak and doesn't do shit but that's total crap! With good shot placement you can take down anything south of a bear with a Ruger 10/22 (Sporter .22). I really hope that this gun gets better damage stats cuz with a silencer it would really suit the lone-wolf playstyle. Perfect for taking down zombies unnoticed but capable if you run into trouble. Now I don't want this gun to be as powerful as a Mosin, SKS etc. but as it is today it's just ridiculous, even at close range its useless.

Why is the Sporter .22 so underpowered?

I know about 1 headshot 4/5 bodyshot's for Zombies but in PVP it's totally useless, as other's have said bum-rushing with an axe is more effective. I imagine myself playing my usual lone-wolf style, hunting small game with my 10/22 and stalking other's to see what they're up to and perhaps sticking them up if I need something or for the pure entertainment (ALWAYS use mics people!). So this rifle with a silencer would be exactly what I need, as I stated: lurking around and able to put up a fight if necessary. Low profile, plentiful ammo and that chilling "puff" of a .22 LR just really appeals to me.

Why is the Sporter .22 so underpowered?

Yea this is exactly what should be done. Red Orchestra 2 does this really well, shots to different parts of bodies and tanks have different effects (assuming they're not instantly lethal). For those that think I didn't hit the guy, look up Sporter .22 on youtube and theres video evidence of someone getting shot like a dozen times and not even going down. It's just a great gun IRL and has huge potential in the game so I hope it's fixed before it's forgotten about and the gun becomes a joke -.-

Just now gave the 1911 a chance...

I found an engraved 1911 in the shipwreck on the very NE part of the map. Tons of ammo but just like my sporter .22 no goddamn magazine!! So I trundled west to NEAF where I met 2 other friendlies who hooked me up with some ammo for my M4 and we were just chatting when BAM a mosin shot cracks the wall opposite the window we're close to. We're in the ATC and decide that we're gonna stake it out and see who this PoS KOS bastard is. The 3 of us take up positions, one in the stairs facing the entry, one on 1st floor aiming out with his scoped mosin and me going to the top because I had binoculars and would be able to spot for the group. As I crawl up the beautiful sight of a magazine (FUCKING RARE IN THE STANDALONE ATM), I crawl towards it and jizz my pants when I realise its an 1911 Mag! Happy as can be I take up positions with my M4 and see that they have 2 dudes South of the Air Field and another 2 making their way towards us from the hangars. A 15 minute firefight ensues with multiple revivals and just all that heart pumping DayZ PvP action we love! The gunbattle is raging and we lose our man covering the door and the whole building is surrounded so it's just me and my mate vs 4 heavily armed bandits. The thought of logging off crosses my mind but the excitement of the situation took the better of me and I decided to see it to the end. My buddy is doing his best with a revolver and mosin but he let someone run into the building *under* the stairs he's on (idk if this makes sense), he asks me to come help him. This is where things start going bad.. My M4 had about 23 shots left and that was it so I was tense as fuck. We actually manage to dispatch 2 guys from our position in the stairs so all that remain are the under-the-stairs guy and the other dude I spotted earlier. This is when 2 major fuck-ups happen at once: A. My buddy gets shot in the leg and the only morphine we have is with our friend from earlier who died at the bottom of the stairs. and B. IM OUT OF M4 AMMO FUUUUUU So I decide that the only way we're gonna win this is if I go get that morphine + ammo from our fallen comrade. I pull out the sexy engraved 1911, slid in my fresh mag and rush under the stairs. The guy is still there, prone and totally shocked that I just ran right past him. BAM 1 headshot and he stops moving, 2 to make sure and damn he's dead! Fuckin great gun! So I fix up my last remaining buddy and get some ammo for my M4 and set about getting this last fucker. After observing around us we decided he had either logged off or was waiting right around a corner. So we slowly inch out the building, advancing one by one while the other gives us covering fire. Nothing!! So at this point we're thrilled, awesome gun battle ends in victory even though we were outnumbered. And then some FUCKING ASSHOLE shows up with no pack or kit, just a fucking SKS and manages to mow us down without any warning. Fucking rained on my parade! TL;DR Best moment in DayZ standalone so far. The 1911 is a GREAT sidearm and KoS noobs can fuckin suck when its without warning and in total silence.. really ruined the whole moment.. Though the gun battle was epic!
  6. I had a silenced M16 with 7 mags, a G17, GPS, Rangefinder, ALICE filled with meat and all I could ever wish for when I found a car! Totally awesome right? aAlready fixed and filled with gas, I took it for a joyride only to plow into a roadblock, get thrown out the window shield, and bleed to death because I was unconscious and couldn't apply a bandage...

    Performance on MacBook Pro retina

You can def run it at 1080p and med/high settings, but crank it up to native res and it will melt the hardware xD
  8. Nice! Must have been satisfying to not pussy out and see your characters fate. Though I would have at least done something! Run the fuck away and try to make them miss, or pull a seconday or a hatchet and at least go down in glory and take one with you ;)

Bandits NEED to be recognized again!

I agree with Banditery I agree that being a bandit is a valid way too survive, but currently being a bandit is the ONLY way to interact with other people. With some kind of identification, you can identify who are natural born killers and want to kill others in the sense of a pre-meditated murder with a motive (be it loot or entertainment, security) AND the people that shoot on sight with deathmatch reactions simply because they don't want to get shot and killed. If you choose to be a bandit, then others should be able to tell. This is clearly not an apocalypse simulator, its a mod for a video game, therefor there should be mechanics that promote the game itself. Some choose cooperation or killing others, the current system makes the latter almost 100% unviable, it forces people to shoot on a hunch instead of a motive, which in my opinion ruins the game for alot of people. If you want to be bandit, that's perfectly fine, but at least have the courtesy of letting people who dont be able to identify themselves as peaceful.
  10. I spent an hour crawling to the Electro Hospital for morphine, barrel rolling my way through zombies and knee-capping some asshole who tried to kill me with a hatchet. Finally made it too the sweet morphine and patched myself up, only to have THE FUCKING GLASS SPAWN BACK. Now for those of you that don't know, you can't break the glass from inside.. So my options are now reduced too: 1. Giving up and respawning fresh (that would be too easy :P) 2. Waiting for some dude to come bust open the glass from outside and attempting to shoot my way out. 3. Some helpful denizen of the forums to PM me and arrange a rescue, I wasted 3 mags of M4 on the glass before realizing it was futile, I will trade whatever you desire for my escape!

Weapon of choice: pros and cons

AKM Pro's- Insanely powerful, a single well placed shot will incapacitate your target 90% of the time. It breaks bones and takes out 8k blood minimum if it doesn't kill you :D. Ammo is plentiful, accurate at 200-300 meters (which is the range you'll want to be engaging your enemies at with this gun) and of course, zeroing. Cons- THE SOUND, this thing is not quite in Enfield territory but if you accidently happen to hold the mouse down too long and instead of a quick semi auto round you send off an automatic burst, I either move INSTANTLY because they know where I am, regardless if I know if my target is dead or not. Zombies will come at you and its generally just a super loud gun, not a good looting gun, this gun is for medium range PVP out at NWA or around the country side.

    Incapacitation.

I agree, all too often I'll shoot someone I had the drop on, only to realize their loot sucks and don't take anything. I genuinely feel bad when this is the case as I don't shoot people for fun but for their loot.. A mechanic where you could rob people would add a layer of tension (the possibility of the victim running for it/resisting) while not ruining everyones day. Robbing people could exist in todays game, imagine someone is hidden with their scopes trained on someone, over direct chat they let the victim know their life is in danger and to put down their gun and face north. The bandit would cautiously move up and take what he wanted, shooting the person if the thiefing went sour.

Will ARMA 2 be the seed of DayZ's destruction?

What separates DayZ's PVP from anything else is the persistence. The fact that you build your character's life over days of searching and being careful makes each life much more valuable then any other multiplayer. The constant threat of being killed and having to start over makes me play completely differently then any other competitive online shooter.
  14. I like to silently watch as people loot the military tents in Stary Sobor, watching them get new guns and what not. I follow them a little ways out of the city so my AKM shots wont be noted by other players or zombies. 1 round usually does the trick (AKM is powerful as hell). Basically I let others do the dangerous looting stuff and right as they think their loot run was a success and are relieved, I put them down. The other day I was coming up to Stary when I saw 2 guys looting, long story short I killed the first then had a tense firefight with the other, I flanked him silently and used a grenade to take'em out. Zombies everywhere but pretty sweet :D

    AKM vs AK 74 Kobra

I love my AKM for the following reasons: Plentiful ammo, I currently have 9 Mags and im constantly running into more, a trip to stary sobor, Balota or a couple dear stands will net you at least a couple mags. The sights give you much better peripheral vision then the Kobra or even the M16 Acog, all the fancy ironsights just take up valuable visibility in a firefight. The stopping power, I stalked a group of 4 guys until I had a good chance, I downed 2 of them instantly with 3 bullets then took my time popping the 2 sprinting away in panic. Simply put, 1 round from any range below 300 meters will fuck up the target, unless the Mp5 or Winchester which are more unreliable when it comes to 1 hit kills.

Any stories you feel bad about?

10 minutes ago I was about to go into Stary to look for some ammo for the AKM, I was scoping out the place before I went in and saw 2 guys moving through the tents, covering each others backs and being decently professional. One of them had a scoped M14 and the other an AKM, I waited till the m14 stood still and put a few rounds in'em from about 300 meters, sadly I missed the first guy but I followed up with a confirmed kill with the other guy. I had lost track of the sniper so I waited for visual contact, after about 10 minutes, I figured the guy was waiting for me to go loot his friends corpse so I circled around the hill to the north of the military base and sure enough, the dude was prone in some bushes scanning where I had been previously. Put a couple rounds in his back and took some survival equipment I had been desperately searching for (WHERE ARE THE MAAAAAATCHES!?!) and a decent silenced M9 to replace my PDW. It was a deeply satisfying kill as the game rewarded my decision to use binoculars and scope the tents out instead of just going in without any tactical awareness. Hitting targets 300 meters away is also much more satisfying then shooting some dude at point blank whilst sprinting through the map with 0 recoil. And finally the idea to think about what the other human player was thinking and countering him :) All the tension was multiplied by the removal of global chat and telling you who disconnects and who is killed, during the murders I had no idea if the guy was even dead or if his friend had disconnected. I can only imagine the guys reaction "Its cool dude, when this bastard comes to loot your stuff, he won't imagine I hid myself and he'll receive a bullet to the brain" .... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

    Being unlucky(or stupid)

I had a silenced M4 with 5 mags, glock with flashlight and a GPS, only to find a car someone had left behind fully repaired and go on a joy ride only to crash it into a wall and bleed to death :(

This game is really hard now

I find that staying too long on the coast is the best way to die, just head to the closest loot spawn once your life starts, get whatever you can, then head inland. Theres no point in staying in Cherno or server hopping at Balota just to get everything, places like Stary Sobor and Berezina have loot and a lower concentration of griefers and death matchers, there still very risky, but you have less of a chance of turning a corner and seeing some dude sprinting down the street with 30 zombies on his tail and getting shot in the face. The point of the game is NOT to get everything you need on the coast then go inland, its to survive. The most essential item you can get early on is a compass, then work towards getting gear to cook your own food, then worry about everything else.
  19. I had a silenced M4 with a red dot sight, I like to go prone in the hills overlooking the military camp at Stary Sobor, I wait and wait until someone comes to loot, then its just a matter of waiting for my prey to loot all the tents and then recieve 3 silenced bullets.
  20. frenchy789

    Your stupidest death

Might have been an M4 or something similar (not a gun nut like alot of people on the forums) but it looked like that style of American assault rifle. It only took mags with SD at the end and all shot were silences, pretty much the greatest gun ever :(

    Social Engineering and DayZ!

Today I was in the big red warehouse next to the military camp at Stary, this dude asked for friendlys in Stary and of course I said yes, I proposed we loot the tents together and we "agreed" to meet at the far side of the tents. Waited a minute then proceeded to shoot him to shreds while he waited for me to come. Felt bad but then again if your willing to walk out into the open and reveal your position on side channel then you deserve to get shot.
  22. I was on a hill overlooking Stary Sobor, waiting for a poor soul to loot the tents for me when some dude asked on chat if their were any friendlies. I said yes, for about 10 minutes I pretended to be on the eastern part of the city and we "agreed" to meet in the warehouse and loot the tents together, he was talking about how he couldn't just trust me and wanted me to go out first. I casually asked him what he could see to get an idea of where he was, I proned around for a bit then found him not 30 meters from where I had originally been. I popped him in the back about 3-4 times with my M16 and looted some meat and a G17 with 8 mags :D

    Play Dead

Its an interesting idea but it breaks down because people will definitively abuse it.

    My Best Story of Banditry

Im normally not a bandit until the endgame where you have everything to survive alone, i tend to avoid other players but this happened like 15 minutes ago and it was summary of what I love about day z. I found a map and compass in Cherno after spawn and took some time to navigate towards green mountain as I have yet to explore the south western part of the map. Im going up the mountains when 2 gunshots land close as hell to me. Someones seen my and wants me dead. I go prone and maneuver slowly behind cover and make my way around where the shots came from and made it into the base at Green Mountain, I climbed the tower and scanned from the top for a solid 5 minutes for the guy, I finally spot him crouching around the base, following exactly the path I took. I aim my ak and shoot him twice, he goes for cover and a brief firefight ensues. My trusty AK 47 does the job and I land 4 or 5 shots directly into him and he crumples to the ground, immesnly satisfying. We played a game of cat and mouse for a solid 15 minutes, both knowing we were close to each other but not knowing exactly where. Ended up getting a GPS, range finder and M16 with a red dot with 4 mags to replace my AK with a single mag. Simply amazing! Never felt the same kind of intensity in any other game, the fact that you can die from a single bullet makes the actual combat thrilling and satisfying.
