  1. Hi guys, Firstly I know that this is not a system spec issue. I'm at work so can't get a DXDIAG but I run an i7 .2.8ghz, 6GB DDR and a GTX 560 - Usually I play on max settings and get very good FPS. Last night on an Epoch server I was playing on, my screen started getting dark whilst I was driving, I thought it was cloudy skies or something but it kept fading more and more until I got total black screen, I could still see my menu when I hit escape. My wife was sat behind me on her laptop and she confirmed it was still daytime, so I relogged and the problem went, it then happened again about 30 minutes later, exactly the same. A slow fade into black which took I guess 20 seconds or so, and then I relogged and it was fine. This is the first time I have ever had some kind of graphical issue with DayZ, I don't see how this can be system related so would really appreciate any feedback you might have. *Also, I should note the first time this happened was after about an hour of normal gameplay. All my vitals were fine, or at least above 80%, my PC was not overheating and this isn't a symptom of what I would expect to see if it were. I thought it was some new feature like I was infected, so just in case I took all of the medical items, and still nothing. Weird it faded my gameplay screen and UI but not the menus? I launch via SIX and as far as I know everything client side is up to date,. Many thanks,

Screen randomly fading into complete black.

Thank you so much! That would make perfect sense as we were on our way back from gathering supplies and my inventory and backpack were totally full. I didn't even realise this had been implemented, will have to be mindful of what I'm carrying next time.
  3. Well, my first in game experience in SA will likely be the same as it always is on any server I play with the current mod. 1: Find a quiet weapon 2: Regroup with the Mrs who hopefully hasn't spawned on the opposite side of the map :P 3: Gather Food, Drink, Medical supplies and start searching for a tent 4: Find a vehicle, head north(ish) and build a camp. I recently found a lovely little village that has everything you need and as far as I can tell, isn't that well travelled so I'm hoping it will still exist with the same facilities in the SA.

    Is this banditry?

I wouldn't feel bad, personally I would have said "ok I'l leave your gear on your body, come get it" and then hidden it.
  5. I have no problem dropping my gun and my sidearm. More fool you if you miss the spare in my backpack.

    A Noobie's Impression and comments

Although I did read your whole post you nearly lost me with this opening statement. You absolutely cannot compare the two and I say that as someone who played wow for seven years. Yes they are both online but that's where the similarities end. That aside, my best advice if you want to "learn" DayZ is to hop on a low pop server, learn the ropes, learn the best way to survive alone before getting a group, get some looting routes and learn the map. You shouldn't be dying from thirst or hunger, let alone the cold. Did you have matches and a hatchet? Did you know you can make a fire to keep warm? I'm not asking that in a patronising way, I died myself from dehydration on an epoch server last night (yeah yeah inb4 noob comments), my own fault for not carrying enough drinks and getting stuck out in the wilderness but i consider that the worst way to die as it is easily avoided if one prepares. Which I didn't. In any case I hope you don't quit on the game just yet, it can be very rewarding, but also incredibly cruel. It sure isn't for everyone. I'm not sure that "giving up until the standalone is released" is the best option, by all accounts the standalone is going to be a lot harder.

    Greatest Success (Thus Far)

I don't understand why 3 people all had to conveniently "check their maps"... why, in case they get lost running through town? Calling bullshit on this one. Mad skills though if it was true man, mad skills...

    Pimp my Bandit

M4A1 CCO-SD twinned with an M14 in backpack, or if I'm gearing up and don't have my gun of choice then it's the M16A2 all the way, it's an easy gun to get hold of and I've used iron sights so long I can get headshots from a pretty good distance. No side arm, extra bandages. (With the CCO-SD and 10+ Stanag mags there really is no point in a sidearm at all) Smokes - Always packing two of these, can save your butt in a pinch, also flares are very useful on a night time server while avoiding players with NVGs, if you're being chased into a building for example, drop one in the stairwell before hiding in the opposite corner, it can cause a distraction or potentially blind them long enough for you to do your thing.

Berezino: The Best City in all of Chernarus?

Berezino is great, I'm usually camping there for people like you.

Backpacks are found in various places, they seem easy to get in Supermarkets and firestations but at the Barracks you tend to find larger ones, Czech Backpacks, Coyote Packs, in the towns I would expect you to find Alice packs and Czech pouches. I have never had the backpack glitch with weapons, I always have an assault rifle and sniper and frequently switch between the two, it works with the hatchet as well if you have it equiped you can switch to the gun in your bag. (This works for me on my current server and previous ones, it may not work for you I have no idea if it's dependent on the DayZ version - if it used to be a bug that has been patched etc) One thing to be careful of, if you find a bigger bag on the floor, transfer your current bag contents into it before picking it up, when you drop your equipped bag it may vanish. Had this happen to me a few times. Oh and just one random tip which has helped me a lot - I always carry a smoke grenade, you can select it by pushing F, when you throw it it attracts zombies, this is really useful for losing aggro or getting them away from a building you want to enter. Just bare in mind its a giant signal to other players that you are there.

    is there a way to...

Before you jump into server hosting look up http://www.dayzpriv.com/ they do a 3 day free trial and are a legitimate company with great support and it is SO easy to import mission files and ammend the PBO. I gave them a shot before I eventually went with http://dayz.st/ as their control panel is nicer, but the caveat is their support is not so great and they are a bit more expensive and now I don't use either. I am not affiliated with either of those companies, just sharing my experience for OP.

Just throwing this out there, but have you tried joining a low pop server? (Like really low pop, 5 people or so) It should be quiet enough to learn the ropes and maybe easy for you to get a group. When I started playing I jumped straight into a server with 48/50 players and got my ass handed to me repeatedly. Sounds to me like you are experiencing the same thing. Heck you could even join an empty server, just load up Six or Commander and sort the servers by player number in ascending order.

Currently worth buying Arma 2 to play DayZ?

Well it's your call, that's IF the standalone is released in a few weeks. Standalone won't be the same game, it wont have all the maps that the current mod has, it wont have some of the features that the different servers have. I'm just saying that in my opinion, it's worth getting, I will probably still be playing the mod alongside the standalone for this reason, it's nice having the variety of being able to play Lingor, Namalsk, Tavi, Fusion etc etc £8.50 is a bargain for what you get,

Currently worth buying Arma 2 to play DayZ?

To answer your question OP, yes it is worth buying. Two main reasons, number 1 is to get some practice in, get used to the mechanics, SA will be a bit different but it's the same engine so some things are bound to be similar. Get as much practice in with as many different types of guns as you can, heck just learn how to survive without having to rely on dangerous runs to the big cities. There is SO much you can learn by playing now which will no doubt benefit you when the SA is released, plus you could actually be having fun NOW instead of waiting. Secondly, there are so many different maps and servers available, you can find straight up spawn with everything PVP crazy servers, survival based, carebear PVE servers, base building etc etc. You should give yourself a chance to experience it all before SA comes along, there is a lot of fun to be had and some of these great servers will close when people rush to the standalone, it would be a shame to miss out on it. Just my 2 cents. oh and aside from the mod, ARMA is a great game on its own anyway.

    Infections

Would like to know what server you're on, I stopped reading because fuckfuckfuck but I have no issue finding medical supplies at all. There are other places to go if the hospitals are empty.

How to stop kill on sight mentality.

Personally I think a lot of Bandits are born through boredom. I'm playing on an Epoch server and due to the trade / grind for gold for better weapons, gear etc a lot of the time would-be bandits are off making gold, yes I realise they can just kill you and take your hard earned moneys but it works both ways and the risk vs reward of killing someone for potential junk when you could have earned a few 10z bars in half hours farming mean I would expect to see less KOS (at least until bases, camps etc are established) Just my 2 cents and think it bollocks if you will, but IMO just having more tasks and direction would help a lot.

Tents should reset when you die.

I don't see how stockpiling gear for "another character" is any different from using a high level crafter to craft gear for a low level alt in most online games. Heck is it any different from saving something to pass on to anyone in real life? I understand to a degree the point about insta-gearing fresh spawns, but if person X has put in the hours to get the gear I don't see an issue with it. FWIW I dont stockpile too much, it stings too bad when it goes missing. But things like a map, sidearm, food and meds are just being prepared and if you dont choose to play that way, so be it. It never hurts to have a backup supply though. And the realism argument is moot. A weapons cache in real life would not vanish if the owner died.

    Top 10 DayZ mod maps?

After playing them all the only one I have felt like going back to is Fusion, the community on the whole seems pretty decent.

    My "butthurt" post

DMR noobs are annoying as hell. The most frustrating thing that's happened to me is an admin giving away my base location and hidden heli. "Hey guis theres a heli stashed at X location herpa derpa" .......why do you think its hidden you cock. If you're an admin you should play by the rules on your server just as you expect everyone else to.

    Hello! I'm new and a noob -

Get Six Launcher or DayZ Commander. Either of those will save you ballache getting the game patched and working. of the two I find Commander more stable and easier to use, but Six Launcher has access to different addons like rmod... Horses for courses really. I have them both and use either one depending on the situation.

Should there be rewards for surviving a long time?

The problem with the hero skin, is people can get it too easily. The Mrs and myself both got it in under a week just playing normally and healing each other. Some people can get it even easier by exploiting the system (Which I do not agree with at all) The humanity / Reward system is flawed and too open to exploit, in view of that I rather like the idea of obtaining a new skin based on number of days survived because that can't really be manipulated unless you hide in the wilderness forever, and where's the fun in that. Like someone previously mentioned, perhaps that "survivalist" skin would mean food decreases at a lower rate. Just subtle benefits that are not game breaking. I guess the main issue would lie in the coding.
  23. Sounds interesting, I'll come check it out tonight and if it's as nice and welcoming as you are making out, then you will have two new players.
  24. It's not just you OP. I wouldn't say I ever have to walk away from the game, and I don't give a rats ass about losing my gear, but when I'm in a tight spot and someone is trying to take me out, sometimes the adrenaline get's me so much I can feel the pulse in my neck... and that is why I continue to play. No other game has ever got me so worked up. I've been playing daily for about 5 months now. and I still get a buzz from a decent fire fight.

Should there be rewards for surviving a long time?

Having a reward for surviving longer wouldn't be a deterrent for KOS. Do you think it would make bandits less likely to shoot you? On the contrary, any bandit worth his salt can get enough gear in about 20 mins (depending on server and spawn location). If anything knowing you can stop someone spawning with gear would make that kill even more sweet, and give people more reason to rage. "I only need to survive one more day to keep my axe" BOOM "Not this week son" Stupid idea. If you are surviving more than a week, you have a camp, you have a a hidden cache of weapons, so when you die you can instantly gear up again (providing nobody finds your camp) THAT is the reward for surviving in my opinion.
