  1. Not sure if you were being facetious but I'll bite. No I own a public hive server. I was simply experimenting on my personal set of computers. But you know a persistent wasteland server where zombies are not the focus is not a bad idea but that's not for this forum. The experiment/test was to see if some other dynamic introduced (in this case AI) would change how most people would play. In this case very difficult AI with gear presented significant enough challenge that people would band together for a common enemy. The AI provided enough risk (death) and reward (loot) for 'most' players to not view them as OP or annoying. Yes it takes a bit of focus off the zombies but I don't think it hurt the Private Epoch Mod we changed. In the end zombies are what made the world go into shit (provides the back drop) but the real danger is your rivals (real life or AI) competing for the same resources.
  2. When you first play this game the map feels so huge. Once you get use to the map it is very small. The whole map is about the size of a typical city in Canada with a population around 200 000. In other words the map is tiny in the real world. Once you get more than 10 people in the game if you understand the map it feels crowded. Not sure if it would be possible but it would be cool if they could model the game to real life scale. It would show the vastness/loneliness of surviving a holocaust. If and only then you could hide a heli and reasonably expect it to stay hidden long term.
  3. Have you noticed Epoch being very popular lately? People like doing things other than KOSing. Epoch reminds me of Minecraft due to the modular buildings. I've noticed servers setting up invulnerability zones to prevent griefers wrecking people's hard work. I for one would never put the investment if someone could heli suicide and destroy hours of work. Especially since you could easily survive in the game with just a backpack, axe, knife, canteen and matches. The Epoch gaming mode sounds care bearish and isn't my cup of tea but it seems to provide a venue for a lot of current players. On the other hand Vanilla has no permanency that some of the other mods have. If standalone intends to follow the same path as the current vanilla I'm afraid the gaming behavior will be the same. Without too many things to do what is a guy to do with a DMR and 7 mags? By the way I set up a private hive with AI max out with no zombies. Yes it's not the mod that Rocket intended but it allowed me to tinker with the mod. It definitely made the game harder. Didn't survive more than several hours and high value areas you needed to go in 3-4 man squads or you would certainly die. I helped out another server admin and transferred the AI over to his medium pop Epoch server (with Zombies) and players would group up in teams to raid high value areas. They definitely could not farm them as easily.

A light dissertation on Morality in DayZ

Video games such as Dayz show how mean spirited people can be when they view there are no consequences. We can debate if there is too much or too little KOS in the game but I don't think it matters. If we interpret KOS in the game to all types of real life anti-social behavior I would think it is pretty spot on to what life would be like in a shit storm. Would you allow your daughter, sister, girl friend or wife walk alone in this type of world? You wouldn't because you would risk kidnapping, rape or murder. KOS for me is a simplistic representation of how mean spirited and selfish people would be. I always live by the motto: In the modern world strangers are nice because they can afford to do so. It's very rare to see alturistic selflessness. To anyone who says they are nice or good people, I roll my eyes cause I know they will be first person to push away the child to get out of the burning building or take the last seat in the lifeboat.

    Anti-Banditry

My opinion but the only way to reduce KOS is to limit the number of guns. Make them extremely rare with bullets a rarer commodity. However as long as there is a means to KOS people will do it just not so easily. Not that I would want to change it but even Vanilla has military grade weapons everywhere with ample supplies of ammo. With the demographics being mostly male eventually they'll run out of things to do, get bored and start shooting each other.

  9. Early days of US434 several regulars would fix the Mi17 whenever it spawned. They would park it off map 4 kms off and within a day it would get stolen and crashed by a hacker. You ban the hacker, rinse and repeat the next time Russian spawns. Players give up the game and a new group comes in. They experience the same thing, rinse and repeat. Basically high value vehicles have a steal me sign on them. I've noticed a lot of experienced players treat helis as vehicles of opportunity. They don't bother investing the time to fix them but if stumbled upon will take it an use it until crashed or stolen themselves. Most of the time helis seemed to be built by players who have passed noob stage but are not quite grizzled and jaded. They still have optimism that building a heli and keeping it for a long time is still possible.

Tried to jump back into DayZ...

KOS due to mistrust and uncertainty will always be there. Changing game mechanics without directly insuring trust won't change this. I'm not endorsing this but if a two players agree to be friendly then the game simply prevents them from hurting each other. Anything less than that is just fluff. Damage to player gear, crafting and actions that require another players simply does is add depth to the game for players already looking to cooperate. That being said assuming we wanted to reduce KOS the one area I would suggest are camping KOSers. A hill or rooftop camper could care less about game depth changes. The only way to change the behavior is to make the play style so difficult only the die hard will do it. It is already too hard for me, I'd rather have a lobotomy then sit on a hill for 15+ minutes. Here are some examples (some very over the top). Make it dangerous to camp: Zombies will climb up the ladder and kill you on the roof if you fire Combat log puts a AI in case you decide to abort Random monsters (blood sucker or AI) will spawn on top of you if you sit there for too long. It rips the player a new one, puts a death message indicating player douchery and hides all his gear. Anyone willing to still do this sort of play style are true sociopaths and congrats to them. The casual camper will stop doing it. Make it unprofitable to camp (no LOLz): Have all spawn points be equally good locations. Right now there are very few and become high value locations for douchery. That being said I prefer the game to do nothing on the KOS topic. In a world gone to shit it's every person for themselves. Cities would be dangerous with sociopaths and the only people you would trust are your immediate group. Strangers would be either avoided when resources are good or KOS if resources are low. KOS would be the norm. People are only nice because they can afford to be. In a holocaust you can't afford to be and thus pure altruistic moments would be very rare. Hill camping is also realistic. During the wars in former Yugoslavia snipers would shoot down into the city on non-combatants. People would have to risk their lives simply to go to school or to work. In the end KOS will always be there and players who dislike it will constantly complain about. Unless you set up a PvE i.e. carebear mode KOS will be perceived to be rampant. For me I like playing and cooperating with known regulars on the server. Players who have established trust over days, weeks or months. Everyone else are not my equal and they shall not be trusted and will be KOS.

Okay thanks I figured the player logged appropriately after being shot and hit.
  19. In my opinion there is enough food. That's because animals seem rarer and sometimes you can't gut them. Thinking positively it balances out though not intuitively. By the way I'm exclusively on a chip, cake and coke diet. There should be a mal-nutrition patch. :) Scurvies!

    DayZ Mod 1.8 Update

From playing on the test server I noticed very few animals to kill. Unless that was just me or a state of the test server you'll need the food. Zombies didn't infect me but they cause a lot of bleeding. It was a struggle to keep enough blood. It was subtle but difficult to stay healthy.

    I'm screwed

Need to accept death and loss of gear. It's part of the game. The some of the best moments of the game is when you do a real number on some one by doing what that tank thief did to you. However you'll always become the victim yourself and lose everything to someone who is more daring and lucky. Enjoy the rush. The game gets very boring if the lost of gear is gone. I've played both Origins and Epoch and base building is interesting for about a week. Then it's all about robbing the bases that are suppose to be virtually bandit proof. Some of my best gaming moments is on an Origins server were my buds and I were against another clan. Both sides were bandits and there was a strong rivalry. We murdered and stole hours of each other's efforts in good fun. Unfortunately the server went down and the fun had to end.
