Stupidest thing you've ever done in DayZ?
[email protected] replied to nickpicks56's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I had graduated from flight school 101 and decided to move onto flight school 102; landing in tight places. Takeing the huey I had claimed on one of the servers I played on. The server owners clan was letting me be independent but use thier base, I decided I would go and restock the medical tent. Clans suck when you have members who take but never put back. So I take my huey and go down to berenzino to the hospital. After taking my time with autohover on and all that stuff I line up and land on the roof. I am pretty close to the edge but think nothing of it. So I get out of the helicopet, and fall to the overhange over the entrance of the hospital. my vission is now blurry, every thing is gray, when I look down my sights I'm shaking and I have no medical supplies on me at all. And now one I trust to call for help. So, I roll right over the edge and pass out on the ground. So here I am, right in front of the hospital, passed out, no friends, and zombies all around. I wake up and then relize I need a tin can to get passed the glass. You talk about being stupid, I should have lined up better and avoided that whole situation. -
You completly miss the whole idea of DayZ. It is a simulator which makes stuff as real as possible, and a program created by a soldier who is looking for that in depth imersion. Many of the players are here for that whole aspect, not a CoD experience.

I feel the only reason why people don't like sniper rifles is becuase it is so easy to make a kill. There is no skill needed to make a sniper shot in this game. They plan on adding wind into the game. I feel once that is done, that will make snipers more realisitic and the only people using them will be those with real skill and not every kid and their uncle who know how to put a dot on you. Distance isn't the issue, its the distance invovled when you have wind drift. Every one argues over balance, but the game is based off real life, and there are some peices of equipment out there that are compeltly lagit in being overpowered. But the gamers here don't want that, they want balance, Balane like CoD has, which takes away the whole immersion effect of this being a simiulator of what it is like in real life. Now they are adding wind but taking out .50 cals. So a nurf and balancer at the same time. I'll tell you right now, a sniper in real life on a battle field is truly overpowering, but that is real life. They don't get thier weapons and gear nurfed to make it more balanced for combat. Of course, that sniper is skilled in what he can do, not every one can do that kind of thing. The emphasis here is on real life skill. In this game, I would love the oppertunity to take some thing out from 1k away, but I want it so that if I hit it, it shows I have the skill to do it, and that I just didn't zero on it and then put my cross hair right on top of it. I want to work for that kill, just like in real life. This isn't a personal attack against any one, I am growing tired of a dev team who would rather nurf things for "balance" sake then actuly implement the game engin capabile mechanics to actuly make snipeing more difficult in the first place. That isn't nurfing, that is making it more realistic. I hate getting sniped just as much as the next person, but you don't take .50 cals out becuase every one knows how to put a cross hair over your body. As a Heli Pilot, one thing that kept me on my toes was when I flew into an area where some one might have a .50 cal. Now, I wont have to worry about where I fly. This baby aint going down. I am now in a mobile air tank.

Class Warfare (A Case For Classes)
[email protected] replied to savini's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
As to skills, rocket has said that you will be able to progress in skills, ie mechanic, doctor. The more you use the skill the faster you will be able to fix/bandage things up. As for classes... I don't know, realy right now, the game is limited to what you can do in real life. Can you navigate across the land with only a map at hand with out the waypoint system? I can, but I know how to do it. This game favors those who bring real life experience into the game. If I can't do something, it is iether I don't know how to do it yet, or the game dosn't allow it. I am not limited to not doing something becuase my class dosn't allow it. An example would be when I first started flying helicopters. My first take off was excelent, I got off the ground. I pressed forward and did a nose dive right into the ground. Okay... I leanred something. Second time I did do that, I instead pressed forward but pressed back to level off, and hit the ground with the tail. Okay I leanred something again. Now, I fly well enough that landing a huey on a hospital roof is childs play. I don't think a class system is needed. As most people would choose iether a police offier for the gun, but of this group most would go to the soilder as many players are into PvP and need all the advantage they can get. You have placed thought into this but I would have to disagree with its implimentation. -
Change the Bottle tops to Binos, more beleavable now?

Arma 2 Dayz and Arma 3 Dayz
[email protected] replied to andinster's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
RhinoCrunch on Youtube has a few videos up of him playing arma 3 DayZ, in multiplayer mode. a link to one of them, as of this writing, I think he has 3 or 4 vids. -
I would love to see specific graphics settings locked
[email protected] replied to UVF Reece's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This sounds like a "I have the money and spent it on a dedicated gaming rig. In order to play this game you all need to do the same as well." When I was 20, I could do this, now that I'm 30. There are other things that are of priority. -
.50s gone? Add the Lapua! (with 2 changes)
[email protected] replied to -Gews-'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
So with the .50s out, what are we going to use to stop vehicles? The 50s I felt were there to take out the vehicles, but had a nice side effect of one shot kills. You have one side of the community asking for more realisim which is basicly a one shot kill weapon with all weapons. Then you have the other side crying that they weapons are overpowered. Sure it sucks to get sniped, but with the wind drift supposed to be going in next, those long range snipers are going to be forced to get some real skill, or get closer. -

Took a break from Dayz - Is everyone still running around with AS50'S?

I used to admin for three servers. Each owner had a diffrent way of running things. In this post I'm going to share what experienes I had while admining for both styles. I can't remember every thing I have done as this had been over a number of months. The first Server I admined for. There wasn't much I could realy do. It was a public Hive server and banning any one is near impossible. I didn't have access to any database or any thing to see if people were spawning stuff in or even teleporting. You could kick people but you had to have a good reason for it. But all this lead to was the guy you kicked to bring the rest of his buddies on then a hacker box "care package" being placed on the ground and then every one taking the items out. Now you couldn't prove who hacked it at all, then they would start porting around. Which was, in most instaces, the one hacker, moving his friends around. So in the end there wasn't any thing I could realy do at all to be an effectie admin. This is about when I moved to private hives, back in October of 2012. This server had its own clan and a good amount of players on it. I played on this server for two months. The admins were active but only one admin knew how to fix any thing. Bitching the entire time that the other admins were just being lazy and not realy being an admin. He got tired of being the only guy that could do any thing so he left for another game. At this point, the server started to get overrun with hackers and the server owener flipped his lid and cut the cord to it. So moving onto another server, especialy after doing a Namalusk for a month. A PvP map in my oppinion. I had gone from being a hero to straight up bandit. Which, I think was a good thing as I leanred many tactics on how players react or unt other players. So going to this other server, I went in, found a little bird and was shot down real quick. The server wasn't highly populated, but I was in a little bird. So, upon respawn, I went bandit mode and was taking players out left and right. But I had becoom a server local at this point. Eventualy being asked to take up an admin position as the owner couldn't cover the game 24/7. Since I was a late night player, I could easily take that slot up. This is when I was introduced to a few tools for admining a private server. One was a map that displayed where all the vehicles were on the map, and also showing me where all the players were on the map in real time. Accurate to about 50 meters. This map also leaves a colored line, a diffrent color for each player and vehicle, on where it has moved to. So you can follow a players entire track of where they have been. With time and experience, you can figure out players who are using ESP to get around. Some players are harder then others though to figure out if they are using such a hack. Also this window lets me look into what you have in your inventory and modify if it I want. With out having to bring up the actual database. Being an Admin at this point changes the entire game for you. You wont be playing the game much any more as you will have access to this map and every one knows it. The owner of this server I was admining was a Bandit player. And some how, some way, he could fine you with in 15 minutes of freshly spawning, even if you were up in the woods up north. He claimed he didn't use the map like that but I don't know... I played on this server as an admin for a month before the server owner got tired with the game. The other admin on the server, who was into changing things around decided to create his own server. I went with him as he was a good friend. But to be an admin, I had to be a friendly player. This I didn't have a problem with as I prefered playing Hero any ways. Also, with the drama created from the previous owner and him hunting people down so well. We didn't want a repeat of this. Eventualy, my day was just logging on, finding a place to hide, and then watching the map for players who were doing things suspiciously. We had a few scripts implemented on the server as well, and the one I liked most as an admin was the Observer mode. This allowed me to remote view your character. I could see if you were looking down a scope, or running around. I saw what you saw. Easiest way to see if some one was brining in a hacker box. Since the server was private, there was no way you could use the exscuse. "Oh I spanwed in with this stuff as it is on my hive character." I heard it a lot, but it was BS. Playing the game no longer was an option as you already knew where all the cars were, and where the players were. Even if you turned the player tracker map off, you still knew where the cars were. So I normaly would find a safe place to hide and sit there for hours. Or camp a road for hours with a snipet rifle, wiating to shoot some one out of the drivers seat. Get up and then run to some other road out of the way. Though my favorate kill was on the chernarus map when a ural full of people came driving by and I had satchel charges on the road. Good times, good times. That was a long wait though. For a while, I did the split personality of being in bandit mode or admin mode. One thing I noticed is that the server was a friendly place. Every one knew each other, and 95% of the new players to the server was a script kiddy. They would spawn in, press a button, be fully loaded, then port around the map. That ban list got long real fast. Becuse the server was friendly, the way people played had gotten sloppy. They were not scared of running out iin the open of the air field. So, I let them know I was in bandit mode. I would take all of my gear off me, then gear up all over again at the closest city. Avoiding cars as I knew where they were, but if one was in a road or an obvious place, it was fair game. Gearing up didn't take long at all, as even starting with a lee or a winchester was enough to peg another player. Take his gear, and then keep going from there. The entire play style of the server changed at that point. The server locals would then team up, while the lone wolves avoided the cities all together. Avoiding PvP hotspots. The largest issue with this play style is that I had to annouce I was in bandit mode every 10 minutes so that players wouldn't get caught off guard and claim I was abusing admin rights. I also couldn't do this till at least another admin was on so that they could actuly admin the server. As when I was hunting, I didn't have access to those programs. I had a good reputation already on the server so i didn't get flack from the locals when I did this. One thing I did was when ever I came upon nice items but couldn't carry them with me, I hid the items with the bodies. This way they were lost forever. Once I was killed, the gear was yours. I didn't seek revenge. I was an admin after all, I couldn't let petty stuff ruin the trust the players had in me. Speaking of nice items. The fastest way to flood the server with high end gear is to have the server reset every 3 hours. Even 6 hours is pushing it. I would recomend 12 hour resets but on many servers, this brings perforamce to a crawl in the latter hours before reset. If you have a server with helicopters every where. You players who have nothing better to do but play all day, will, on every server reset, farm. Server resets, they jump in thier helicopter and fly around looking for crashed helies. NVGs, in a 12 hour day of of playing, You can have about 10 pairs of NVGs in stock. AS50s, M107s, rounds, rounds and rounds. It was nuts. Also, when it comes to giving starter weapons. We tried the M9SD with one mag. The resualt was being in cerno, electro, bolota and a few other cities and finding an unlimited amount of m9sd but no rounds. Sure survivabilities goes way up, but it realy does show you how even haveing such a weapon for a fresh spawn is like. "Oh look, I don't need to sneak around any more." Also, fresh spawns became deadly. This promoted a KoS mentatlity on the server so we removed the weapon. Starting load out was a bandage, soda, sardines, pain killers, and a road flare. No flashlight. So, lets review quickly. No Having a server reset sonner then 6 hours. Weapons at start up leads to a PvP orientated server. Vehicles every where makes it easy to camp roads. Being a bandit admin leads to a bunch of drama. Sarter gear should be kept to a minimum. Placing a special vehicle that repwans at a spawn point on every server reset, leads to players camping it to get it first. There are a few others that I know I am missing but can not remember right now. I want to hear what other experiences server admins have had.

Admin Experiences
[email protected] replied to [email protected]'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I'm starting to think I put this in the wrong thread. It looks like this thread is used for advertising private servers and not realy a discussion place. Inception, I know the advantages of a short duration between server resets. Four hours would still be to often in my book. Hoarding and farming of loot from choppers just is abused to the point that after two days of a fresh wipe, every one has NVGs, AS50s and rounds. The last server I admined on had about 20 locals and then about an average of 10 to 20 more players who would pop in and then leave for a week then repeat. Also, how do you avoid the drama invovled when you raid some ones base? Before I even admined, When I did my bandit stuff, I normaly raided a base, took enough stuff that only I could carry then destroy thier base, cars, gear. With the admin map, you know where every ones bases are and people were quick to claim admin abuse. On this last server I was on, the owner had found a way to put an aircraft carrier in. This thing was equiped with a little bird, a mi17, and huey, and a v22. The way it was set up, is that you had to find it, and from the ocean you could geton the carrier by stairs. Also on board was a refuel ural and a repair ural. Also a medical box and then some food. To make it so that hackers couldn't see it on thier map hacks or other programs. The items would reset on every server reset. We initialy thought that people would be rewarded for exploring a part of the map that no one realy cared for, as you had to get to it by boat and couldn't be seen from shore. What this lead to was having to remove the 3 weeks of coding to get it to work in the first place. The hackers never did find it, so that worked. But, it also lead to the guy who found it, to get a group of people together and then turn it into thier base. They would do every thing they could to make sure they were on the carrier before server reset or when they logged out. They were guarenteed a vehicle when they logged back in. Also they had moved every boat to the carrier to make sure no one else could find it. If they died, they just had some one fly out and get them. Also the medical supplies meant they never had to go into town, same with the food. Upon every server reset, they would each take thier own chopper or the v22 and look for heli crashes, ensuring that no one else had a chance at the loot. Now becuase the ship and helis would reset, every thing would be gone when the server came back up. So they had other tents spread around the map that they hoarded all thier gear. As an admin, I could look up in the database for tents, but I never realy cared for doing that. Since they had so many tents when I stumbled upon one of thier stashes, I was quick to destroy it. On this server I was never acused of admin abuse, at least not by the locals. New guys to the server, they would pull that card out in a heart beat if thier poorly placed tent was raided. After two weeks of this group doing thier thing, I had relayed my experiences to the server owner and he decided he would pull the code, even if it sucked with all the time we had put into putting it into the game. -
You might be able to keep a home made silencer stuck to the weapong, But no way in hell could you keep a scope zeroed with duct tape.

Savor cars while they last
[email protected] replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Your topic title makes it sound like they are getting rid of cars forever and therefore is misleading. I have seen no where in any interview or dev note that they were removing cars perminently. What I have seen in interviews is that Rocket isn't ready to implment them becuase they have details to work out. Like "Having a blue door taken from one car and placed on your red car." Why hold the game up for a few months over something that can easily wait? You don't need a car to get around. Cars are a liability any ways. If they don't have cars for a few months, who cares. It took me a month and a half to find my first car when I first started playing DayZ. Even then, after I found it, it was so screwed on parts I didn't even bother with it. LPCs worked fine. Now it is to the point that If i do need a set of wheels, it is the bike any ways. -
84 days. Had a bandit pinned down in the barricks on the north side of the NWAF. I was using a 240 at a pine tree just to the NE of the entrance. He was heckling me from inside the barracks. Died by hearing "Surprise" from his voice then shot in the back. ghoasted... Oh well, what ever makes a bandit more sucessful I guess.

How Will You Play Standalone Without the Mod's Exploits?
[email protected] replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There will always be bandits. But with what I am reading from SA tidbits. Not a lot to go off of though. Is that the enphisis will be placed on survival. And in my experience, where the zombies are a real threat. Players team up more often. I think this kind of mechanic makes it to hard for the CoD players to get thier PvP on. Weapons will be hard to find, zombies will be smarter and more lethal. Instead of taking minutes to gear up, it'll take hours to gear up. Of couse unless you take another player out. But for that to happen, you need to be able to have a weapon of your own. It will cuase other forms of banditry, but many of the CoD style players, I don't think will stay around. -
What Event Turned You Into A Bandit?
[email protected] posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I used to play as a very strict hero. Doing my best not to shot at people, not unless they had a bandit skin, and only if they shot first at me. Back in the day, the private hive I was playing on (active admins keep hackers away) decided they would try out the namalusk map. That first night we were in the bitch black, freezing our asses off, doing our best to fiind clothing and food. Weapons? That stuff was every where. Since many of the players were using snipers, I was using a 240 for suppression fire and squad support. As a Hero I would fill what ever roll was needed and not already taken. So after a night o gatheriing stuff and getting 3 urals a hilux and a UAZ all running, we were all getting tired, so we drove to the closest facility to the west side of the land bridge. As we didn't know the map yet, the other players thought it would be safe. I didn't I was like who is going to the watch vehicles. I was told they were safe and before I knew it, I was the only one still online. Well... I put a whole bunch of work into what I had and the cars as well. I wasn't going to loose them. So i clicmed the latter and then watched for people who were headed to the facillity. I had 400 rounds and basicly a one shot kill weapon. When the first guy logged on eight hours later, I had racked up 17 kills. I was living off coffee and bitched the guy out before I logged off. It was that Namalsk map that made me go Bandit. I don't care what you say, that map is meant for PvP and thats it. Shoot on site. Becuase I had always played as a hero with this group. They had never seen me realy use a sniper rifle. When I came online after sleeping off the Coffee shakes. I picked up a M107 and picking people off normaly with the first shot, even after having to lead them. I quickly was designated as the groups over watch when ever they were in the "hole" or A2. I don't play bandit any more, as other things happend. I started playing DayZ in June of 2012. But one thing I did learn as being a bandit... How to be a better player killer. -
All though, when it comes to clearing a tree, you just pull a Ural over and clear the area.
-
You have rivers going uphill.
-
And here I had started a thread talking about ballistics and weapon reliability. Guess I didn't need a balistics part of that thread. Thank you gews for the research on this. You can already see a diffrence between 5.56 and ruasian 7.62. The AK suck damage wise with thise current set up. Though according to balistics the AKs should be more powerful. I'm not going to argue what DayZ is doing with thier math. Its just nice to see a diffrence between the two rounds. The M4/16s are more damaging. Would explain a few things when I was shot from an auto AK.

Closet Bandit or Loud and Proud?
[email protected] replied to RabidDiabetic's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I trolled in the way that I would loot your body then burry it. If I already have what I nead, I just bury it in a hury and GTFO before I get shot, never saying any thing. I am no longer a bandit, but I still use this approach when I do kill some one. If I wanted to be a troll even more back when I was a bandit. I would loot the body of the good stuff, destroy that stuff, then leave the body there with iwhat ever backpack, and let it work as bait for iether another player, or the guy thinking he could get his stuff back. -
A back up for the server works, set it for every ten minutes just in case you get hit hard. You can go back a little bit and many players will understand the reset if needed. Also you will need to watch it all the time. hackers hit so often, that as an admin you will have little play time on your own server. You will also want a few other admins to help you cover the times slots that you are not online. You will need to watch your server 24/7. Things to watch out for as an admin is hunting other players down, if you are that kind of player. it isn't worth the drama of being acused of using admin powers to hunt players down. Plus you will already have a good idea of where players bases are. The server I admind on, the admins had a special skin. Didn't keep people from shooting at us though. If any thing it made us a target. Admins are not special and should not recieve any special equipment. And if an admin looses his helicopter, the server shouldn't be roled back becuase said admin is butt hurt. I tried diffrent play styles to see what fit me best as I still wanted to play the game. I did the friendly/bandit mode approach. The Friendly thing so that there was a repore with the players of the server, and then the Bandit mode, which was anounced to prevent a care bear server from happening. We had many players on our server that were lone wolfs or team playing friendlies. Which I thought was cool. But beuase there were no bandits around realy, it lacked suspence. People were not playing as if they knew they could die at any moment. So when I went bandit, I had to turn my admin screen off (second monitor) and then start outfrom scratch. I would put every thing down I had and then rekit my self as I stumbled upon stuff. My rule was no vehicles becuase I already knew where they were on the map. If I stumbled upon one though in an obvious area I would blow it up. I tried to remove high end items off the map, like m107s and stuff like that. I wasn't able to do any of this though unless another admin was on. Eventualy I just took the approach of "Okay I'm here. I wont shoot any one and just find a nice place to hide. That way I could be in game and dick around, but never could do any thing becuase as soon as I got into a position where my character could die, a skript kitty was loose on server. That or just camped out a road with a sniper rifle and shot any one who drove/ran by Then run to another location. You will find that real quick, many of your bandits, (not all) are skript kiddies. Hit your server up, hit a script and gear up, then start porting around the map to kill people. You have to constantly check the inventory of players on the server. If you have a server host who also gives you a tracking map, use that to see who are making thier way to vehicles or to where players are. You will learn through experience who is using an ESP hack. Now, when it comes to server resets. I liked every 6 hours as it kept the lag of the server down. But 12 hours is perhaps best as it keeps people from hitting up the helicopters on server reset. We had a taviana map and it was set for every three hours. I so hated that as at every server reset, there was a mad dash for the crashed helies.

The best Dayz tip you have ever heard
[email protected] replied to fyxamatosys's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Never run across an open field. Stay in the tree line as long as possible. And low crawling across an open field just makes you that much easier to be killed. -
As stated before. Private Hives are the way to go now. Many admins take thier server private as it allows them to ban trouble players. Many admins will ban for combat logging, which is something I support. Also private hives will implement scripts that you will not find in a public hive. The one I like is where they take the action timer. Where you shoot a weapon and have to wait 30 seconds before you can log out, and make it so that if you even move, you can't log out till 30 seconds later. This prevents players from logging out to reset the zombies. Though one down fall to private hives is that oyu have to fiind a server with admins you can respect. There are admins out there who will abuse the position.
