You know what sucks? (post your best dayz FML stories here)
dunkhan replied to tearran's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Find AKS 74. Get hit by zombie. Notice you have no bandages left. Run deep into the woods so no one will find your corpse. Run 80% of the way back. Get knocked unconscious first hit by a zombie and die again. Run 99.9% of the way back (nw airfield, so pretty far). Breathe a sigh of relief as the place you died comes into sight... You have not received a message in 10 seconds... Server restart. Edit: Oh and today I slaughtered 50% of the group I was in because they were hiding in an unexpected spot. That also sucked. -
Newbies, please put things in perspective...
dunkhan replied to griffinz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh man, now all the newbies are going to start clamouring for attack choppers and main battle tanks. -
Seeing myself on my own map (with GPS)
dunkhan replied to sashimi (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There was already a thread for this. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1607 It is not a glitch or hack it is a server setting. -
We need a solution to server restarts!
dunkhan replied to james2464's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What I find funny is when people who bought arma just for this mod ragequit. I heard this guy on side chat saying he was going to ask for his money back. Everyone laughed at him. I am not saying you shouldnt buy arma to play this mod. Arma is great, and not just for this mod, there are lots of great mods, and the vanilla game is excellent too. But if you are going to shell out money for a game so you can play a mod that is in alpha... at least check if you are really going to like it first. Reading the forum will tell you everything that players do and don't like about it. It is in alpha so bugs are guaranteed. Let's have less complaining. The devs clearly plan to make tents and vehicles work or they wouldn't have put them in at all so this complaint is totally redundant. If it is that important to you play a finished game until this one is done. You may also consider offering help to the devs in terms of work (I seem to remember they mentioned wanting 3d artists) or money. Who knows if you send them enough cash they might even make your personal pet peeves a priority. -
Can someone who knows this game well confirm wether this is a server side issue? If there is something I can do on my end about this that would be great.

There shouldn't be any pvp-free trading post region!
dunkhan replied to survivalist's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I am all for there being a trading post, and it should be administered by players within the current game rules. In fact next time I die I plan to have a go at setting one up. Someone mentioned wanting tools implemented for this, to be honest I cant think of anything. Maybe lockable doors but I can see as many problems caused by that as it solves. Anyone got any concrete suggestions? -
List of servers with nameplates on?
dunkhan replied to Intigo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes sorry everyone, I have since learned I was wrong. Still my false assumption was caused by the fact that most server admins that create veteran servers also turn the names off, so it is still good rule of thumb for checking. I find your last line a little sarcastic however. I have played on about 20 different servers. Perhaps if there were one or two that did not conform to this rule it is because I was not observant enough not because I haven't been on enough servers. -
Why this mod is the best thing to happen to PC gaming
dunkhan replied to jagdfalke@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh wow I remember air traffic controller, that was so great back in the day. I remember hearing it was designed as a simulation to test/train real life tin pushers but I don't know if that is true. Once again though for me Dwarf fortress is the real innovation behind minecraft, minecraft merely made it accessible to a much wider audience. Dayz is truly great, the only real zombie game ever made, I hope my pedantic post earlier didn't give the impression I feel any other way. Now all we need is a decent fantasy RPG and I will be in paradise. -
Why this mod is the best thing to happen to PC gaming
dunkhan replied to jagdfalke@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I disagree, even if you insert the word recently in that statement (I don't want to get into pong, tetris and the invention of computers in the first place). I would put Dwarf Fortress at number one if recent means the last decade, Dayz probably comes in around 6. This is only a projection though and may be subject to change. It is hard to guess what changes will result from something like this, as the results show very gradually and Dayz is very new -
Seconded. What server admin turned that on, it is stupid. Mostly you can only see yourself but even that ruins the entire navigation challenge in the game. Making compass and gps totally useless items. It seems servers are getting dumbed down all over. It used to be about 50/50 veteran vs regular and now it is more like 20/80. Note also this is not the same as the map hacking that was mentioned in an earlier thread, I have experienced both and this only shows very close players and the markers are blue instead of red.

List of servers with nameplates on?
dunkhan replied to Intigo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You can tell if a server has name tags on. There is a box when you select it that says 'Regular' or 'Veteran'. Regular = on veteran = off. While we are on the subject can we tell the people hosting the servers named US hardcore 1 and US hardcore 2 that they either have to change the name to US softcore x or make them veteran? Regular is not hardcore. Thanks. -
It seems there are less and less bandits to be seen on the servers, my guess is because they have learned to hide well and because griefing is fundamentally boring and unfullfilling. I would make a case for removing bandit skins again to make it more exciting. Disclaimer: I am not a bandit, I do not murder, I just crave danger and excitiment.

3rd Person View, why I support it, and why it should stay in game
dunkhan replied to tearran's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't have a problem with 3rd person mode. I hate to use it myself but I don't care if others do. The problem is that 3rd person is only on for regular mode servers, and regular mode also has nametags that pop up when you mouse over someone. This is not ok. On the other hand if we can get third person without the name tags I would be very much in favour, as I think 3rd person is the reason so many people play the regular servers and I would like to see the population return to the veteran servers. 3rd person is not cheating, name tags are cheating. Edit: I don't know why people hate head bob so much, it feels immersive and realistic to me. I know computer nerds don't get out much let alone run (I know I don't), but the human head is not gyrostabilised. When you run irl your view jumps around and it is harder to see details or detect movement. -
Short answer no. Long answer maybe. It is a feature that if you disconnect while in danger you are supposed to spawn unconscious (that is what the timer is, you will stand up and be fine if no one kills you while it is counting down). I have seen this happen at times when it probably shouldn't so it may be a bit buggy, but it is nothing to worry about. I once passed out on the train tracks after the bandit bug hit me, and some kindly soul came and dragged me off the tracks into the grass. I thought it was hilarious and also very cool.

Are people more hostile, or friendly?
dunkhan replied to A27_StarWolf's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Your question is flawed. A comparative needs something to compare with, ie are people more hostile than X. I can see two possible interpretations: Either you mean are people more hostile in dayz than they would be in real life, or you mean are there more hostile people in dayz than freindly people. I would answer both with a no. Zombie apocalypse is not friendly to the psyche, and especially in countries like the US where a lot of people have guns, you would expect a significant number of survivors to lose it and go ape shit. I can't predict such a hypothetical with any accuracy but I believe there are regions in the world where the proportion of murderers would roughly correspond to the average dayz server. There are definitely more friendlies than murderers on the servers, it is just that you notice the murderers more as the friendlies are hiding in the bushes and the murderers are shooting you in the face. One good bandit can kill dozens or even scores of players in a few hours, and under the hail of bullets it is easy to believe the whole server is out to get you, but they are not. I estimate about 10-30% bandits, depending on the server and the time of day. Server admins can probably give you more accurate numbers. The stats page is at just over 10% bandits although that doesn't take activeness into account. -
I love to pvp, but not for the emotional rush of griefing. I do it for the challenge and the test of skill. I love that there are psycho griefers on the server because it makes it way more exciting and tense, but I would never want to be one. Griefing is actually one of the most boring things you can do in dayz. You sit on a hill or rooftop near cherno or elektro and just pop noobs running along the street with a sniper. Yawn, it's like those popcap games for 'casual gamers' where you just have to click on objects that appear on your screen. Not what I bought a gaming rig for. When I pvp I target bandits only because A) they are usually able to defend themselves and or hide, making it a challenge, and B) shooting someone in the face counts as implicit consent to be shot in the face by others and pvp, like sex, should be between consenting adults. I do also enjoy roleplaying the good old 'shield of hope' character (to use a fallout karma rank) just because that is what most fiction has instilled in me as the way to be. I would also love to roleplay an evil bastard sometimes, but so few games support that and ones that do are already overrun with them to the point of it being an evil villains convention.

I hate pay to win too, but as someone who can rarely afford to buy new games, I would prefer an ethical microtransactions model. This means you can buy things like character clothing, camo paint for your DMR, a nice hat, colour options for flares... things that don't effect gameplay at all. Basically I like the idea that people with a lot of money support the development costs and people with very little also get to join in.

Another thing, the mod is most easily installed with the six updater https://dev-heaven.net/projects/six-arma-updater/files
-
Once again arma 2 free IS enough to run dayz (with AO of course). I don't know why so many people keep saying you need the full version. Check your facts before posting, you might have cost this guy money. Edit: yes max you still need arrowhead
-
You need arma 2 and arma operation arrowhead. OR you need combined operation (which is both in one package)

"why do people find fun in ruining everyone's time? I dont get it..." It is a sign of emotional impairment. I have worked with special needs children and you see similar behaviour there. Whether it is hurting yourself or others, or even simply strong tasting food or bright colours, the basic need is for stimulation and people require it like a hunger. Griefing is just an aspect of this, people feel an emotional and social connection when they are causing emotions in others. Try not to hate them too much, it is usually not something they have control over. Often it stems from environment, upbringing or genetics.
-
Actually arma 2 free does work with the mod. I bought a copy of OA a while back and when this mod was out I got arma free to test. Works great.
-
Ok here is a suggestion, every time this happens we should take a screenshot of the whole map and post it here. This might help identify the players who are doing it. I realise you can change your name in arma but at least we will know what names they are currently using.
-
I have seen this too. I have established that when it occurs everyone can see everyone. It also seems to turn off and on although I am not sure about that one. I joined a server and carefully checked that this was not happening, and then later it happened again. This is a major problem imo and needs to be fixed.

This is the second time I have heard the word carebear in relation to this game today. I don't think it applies. A carebear is someone who avoids pvp in an online game and restricts themselves to pve. In Dayz the dangers of interacting with other players is one of the primary things that make the game exciting. It is also impossible to avoid. The people you are referring to are either roleplaying good guys for the challenge and immersion, or they are new players that don't know how to pvp properly. I love pvp, the reason I usually opt to help other players rather than kill them is because it is more scary and exciting, and also because it increases my immersion in the whole atmosphere of horror survival. Sitting in a sniper nest and popping babies on the beach is not challenging or exciting. It is just downright boring. I don't think that being a trigger happy thrill killer is the 'only correct' way of playing this game which is what the word carebear implies. Don't get me wrong, I don't want the bandits to leave. If they did the game would become boring. I am even partially in favour of removing the bandit outfit altogether so psychos can't be identified. I just have a problem with being talked down to by people who are basically taking the least challenging aspect of the game and making it their entire experience. If you want to man up and try a real challenge try building a functioning squad from complete strangers without killing or being killed by any player, and getting them all good enough gear to be a power in the game. Or you could just brag about how you killed the guy on the beach that was trying to work out the hotkey for chat so he could ask how to open his backpack.
