Some feature ideas requesting feedback
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Ander (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Wasn't that this way in Dark Age of Camelot? When you were near a fire you had not logout timer? I'm pretty sure something like this was in one of the many MMOs I've played. -
Change Deer Stands from Military to Farm Loot
Lukio (DayZ) replied to walrus2517's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The very first time I found an AK or something like that in a hunting stand I'm a bit surprised as well. My first thought was "This is really odd to find military weapons in a hunting stand!" Then I thought about all those Rednecks who buy AR-15 rifles to go hunting some deer from the highway and then its not that far from being realisitc. Every country has their own little Redneck population and I'm sure its not much different in Chernarus :-D On top of that you could argue that some poor military chap died up there on the lookout for infected or something like that (as some hunting stands are actually guard towers). So imo - yes its kind of weird to find military grade loot in those stands and on the other hand no its ok to find it, just because maybe you are lucky and find one nice thing. Its not like the Barracks or Tents where military weapons are abundant. -

I really like the idea regarding the fireplace, giving it more value than just cooking something. A fireplace out in the real world automatically gives you safety against animals, provides you warmth and generally is something people like to be close to, basically the fireplace and radio towers just symbolize two different sheltered areas. The radio tower itself is kind of strange in comparison. Instead of the high night visibility of the fireplace you instead have a generator (probably making noise) + a highly visible daylight structure - if its anywhere near the smaller radio towers like that one just behind Chernogorsk. Maybe add some blinking red light on its top, then I'd be ok with it. Also if the fireplace provides a no-login zone of 100m, I'd expect a radio tower to easily cover 1500-3000m - similar to CB radio. Generally I think this is a good approach to enabling player (fireplace) /team based (radio tower) safe zones. As far as I understood, you'd always be spawned to the borders of the radiotower / fireplace covering the area you first wanted to spawn in. Your spawn wouldn't move from one covered area to the next on and on until you spawn way outside of the map. -
Hmm did you try cluster tin-canning them? Those shiny cans seem to preoccupy the infected and spur them into higher philosophical thinking about their own existence and the gaia theory. If you, a long time player so it seems, have difficulties getting equipped right at the beginning, I think the difficulty / aggroing is fine, maybe needs a bit tweaking, but the prospect of having to restart from zero needs to be something you really dislike. Up till now most people have been too comfortable with dying imo.

Its simple enough to get rid of infected aggro, it may not necessary be fun though. To me it seems that after playing only 9 hours you are still making some mistakes. There are enough weapons available in the game. Once you know where to go and what to look for it should be no problem to acquire a weapon (not necessarily a gun!!!) within 5-10 minutes. I believe enabling different ways of communicating and better group play is already on the Day Z roadmap. In Alpha stage there are much more basic things to take care of first. Not all survivors have a story with a happy ending. Dying at random is part of the game. Run to the hills! Run for your lives!

Stranded on a rooftop....
Lukio (DayZ) replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you are on a roof, just throw a road flare or smoke grenade downwards - it'll draw most of them away. -
Is DayZ harder to run than Arma 2 Free?
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Andrew0085's topic in New Player Discussion
Andrew0085 if you have further doubts just post your PC specs and I'm sure its possible to figure out how the game will run on your machine. -
When I've used directional to talk to players, I usually have to get within a closer range. To do this I try to do it so they don't see me immediately. Most encounters usually go like this: "Hey you there at stone/bridge/object with weapon xy, I'm going to approach you. I am friendly. Point your gun above you/lower your rifle and I will not shoot you." *Player looks in all directions, points weapon into direction where he thinks voice came from* (Sometimes accompanied by a frantic "Where are you?") *I repeat myself* *Player goes into crouch and iron sights in my general direction* So now either he moves away, I retreat or deem it necessary to shoot him. Last time this happened was at Balota Airport at dusk, I was prone right between the tree and the bush next to the tower entrance. The player actually walked by me several times before I successfully retreated. The problem with the above tips is that they usually only work on people who are not stupid and are willing to socialize. Unfortunately, I have the feeling that the mod currently is plagued by trigger happy FPS kiddies, raging psychopaths or simply put people so freaked out and paranoid that they always are at the brink to pulling the trigger. Yeah I miss the times where this was a bit different and I think (!) that the community has some kind of self-healing effect, but it takes a while to get to a point where its worthwhile to try to socialize with random players.

Maybe your profile is write protected out of some reason? I saw several ARMA 2 guides that suggest this, maybe you followed one of them and forgot about it ?

What MineZ is Doing Right, and What DayZ Could Learn From It.
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well its not a hidden snipe fest, mmkay? If that is your impression you're doing something wrong. -
This mod reminds me a lot of how Mount & Blade started off. The only difference was that M & B always was a stand alone game, but in the beginning it was really really bad. A team of 2 or 3 people working really hard to make their vision come true. Now, M & B is a full fledged game that even has official addons. This took about 8 or 9 years I'd say So moving from where we are now to a standalone game that will actually get shelf space (virtual or even in a store) will take quite a while. Maybe nowadays it won't take that long because there are lots of 3D engines, tools, libraries and frameworks around that are tailored for gaming. I'd still guess around 2-3 years.

For anyone interested in a different filter or grittier look in DayZ / Arma 2 - the ENB series filters + Fallout New Vegas Enhanced shaders should do the trick. Linkage

What MineZ is Doing Right, and What DayZ Could Learn From It.
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There are several suggestion threads talking about removing certain weapons (high powered rifles for example), displaying nametags within close distance etc. Not sure if the same mechanics for a minecraft mod will work with a mod for a tactical mil-sim game. -

how do i revert back to 1.7.1.5?
Lukio (DayZ) replied to btrizzle's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No, just wait 12-24 hours until the dust from the 1.7.2 update has settled and your favourite servers have updated as well. -
Alpha testers get to test the alpha version, that's enough of an award.
-
I'd be all for this for major updates. Anyways - great to see 1.7.2 out in the wild, thanks to everyone who was involved.

This is an ARMA 2 collision issue that probably will not be fixed as long as DayZ is just a mod. -
This video sums up why the zombies in Dayz are NOT fun in their current state.
Lukio (DayZ) replied to jenson's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Just look at it as a role player, those walls from the buildings in Chernarus, they are just made out of cheap plaster and some thin wood planks. The infected can hit you through it and crash through the walls. The doors are out of cardboard or thin planks. -
Just reconfigure Ironsight to a different mouse button, having them both on right mouse button just sometimes can be confusing. Same with the use key on the left mouse button.
-
The answer is: Yes and no. Yes the basic game is about lots of running around, looking for items and staying away from zombies (and players!). No, the game can be so much more once you got the running around, looking for items and staying away from zombies all figured out.

I just can't wait until I accidentally step in one. Even more though I'll be really dumbfounded where to put one should I find it or be able to disarm it. So many nice places!

Yes he said no classes, but a certain kind of traits/skils - like for example being good at orienteering etc. - so maybe we don't get something like fixed classes but some kind of special area of interest.
