We'd shut down all windows, hang drapes from the inside. Set up candles, matches in every room, fill the bathtub with water as personal reservoir, make an itinerary of all food, protective clothing, items usable for personal defense, go to the parking, siphon all gas from the vehicles left over into jerry cans & scavenge all apartments for tools, provisions, weapons, devices and anything that will work for barricading. Next I'd prep a car for doing scavenging runs, maybe refit the windows with chipboard or something, tear out all unnecessary seats/ interior. Throw in additional empty jerry cans. From there on I'd make my way to gas stations, weapons/outdoor shops and the local small supermarket. I'd map all blocked routes/streets and later fortify those blockades to create a perimiter around my house. Furthermore I would try to aqcuire CB/communication equipment and as many how-to books as possible (How to weld, how to repair engines etc.) These would probably be my first steps into survival. Until I haven't secured our own apartment / house I would engage everyone else as possible threat. -
How often are characters saved exactly?

The server maybe wasn't connected to the hive? There are some server admins who think its cool to not have the server connect to the hive to prevent server hopping / ghosting etc. While these user exploits ( as defined by Rocket) are deterred by this, your character does not get saved onto the official hive. Probably after restarting the server lost all player data from its local character database. My 2 cents (a bit OT): Personally I am pretty annoyed about all the fragmentation going on just with this mod itself for 100 servers found there are 30 different flavours with different settings, versions, beta versions and own modifications (side chat, vehicles etc.). This is typical for ARMA 2 servers and has always annoyed me that almost every server has its own strange mod settings, mod-modifications and versions running. To top that off the integrated Gamespy server browser is a piece of shit.and external server browsers are very slow when refreshing / updating. -
Well then why don't you look at modding the Chernarus map, see how it works to change a dummy house into enterable house, maybe make a Max script or something to generate default interiors for the different model types etc.? Like this I think you could contribute. Imo Rocket already said in an interview that removing the dummy buildings and replacing them is something that isn't out of reach but there are other priorities, yet that the dummy buildings in Chernarus disturb him as well.

What do users do that only have a hatchet or crowbar? If something like this is implemented, it would have to work with all available weapons. On top of that if you have it only working for firearms, you probably would need two different animations for pistols and for rifles. Sounds like something that would be put in during beta as its a fluff feature.

20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon

It probably doesn't rally matter if you have a weapon at start or not if you are completely new to the mod, because you will just simply die a lot until you get a foothold and know your way around. Its normal to die several times when you are completely new, its part of the game and its the most elementary skill you have to gain to be able to find other loot that will help you survive. Everyone who has been playing for a while went through this, we all had multiple failed attempts at surviving. Players have died at start with or without 1911/Makarovs in their hands. -

Please. Its not about destroying the game. Its about profiteering from the information and knowing the exact whereabouts of a possibly very well equipped survivor or someone who is trying to scavenge the same area as you were intending to go to or someone who you just simply dislike. They actually are showing off their position, their equipment, their intentions etc.. Its all about "Look at me!". Same with many "Lets play" videos. Except that a Stream is in real-time and players who dislke it can interact or interfere with the streamer to their liking. -

The biggest problem is that ARMA 2 servers running DayZ mods are (out of necessity) public servers. Since a while its well known in the ARMA 2 community that most public servers usually have some weird hacks going on due to the way ARMA 2 is open to scripts & mods. Almost all clan/squad servers are locked down, usually with additional addons or tools running that lock the server down even more and notify if any hacks were used or even blocks them (e.g.DooACS).. -

I like the video, first of all it just show how awesome the game can be when you play with others as a team that cooperates, secondly it proves one thing very very nicely. There is no safe place on the map. Even if you try hiding the vehicle at a very remote position in your opinion there is always a chance someone else stumbles upon it. Thanks for the video and I also would like to say that the admin handled the email from the guy in a decent way. -
What do you think about non-hive servers?

Non-hive servers are basically to DayZ what freeshards are to an MMOG. Usually initiated by a tight knit sub-community that wants to define a game by their own standards or rules and is not content with playing on official servers. Whatever the reasons, non-hive/freeshard servers are not helping with developing a game, they are like little bubbles seperated from the normal community, statistics, data, security measures and licensing control. -

Not sure how ARMA 2 engine works in this way, but technically in a network game, the more players / objects you see, the more information the server has to deliver. So if you have a player who has a sight range of 6 km, the server will have to calculate all information this player-client would have to display. If you would look into Cherno and 7 people are running around in the street and 2 guys are on some roofs, then all this information would have to be communicated from the server to the client. Position, velocity, equipment etc. If all these players can see 6km the server first also would have to calculate which player can see what.and then synchronize all the information that is sent out to the players so they all receive this information up date during the same time window (frame). Although a server does not display frames, it does usually have some kind of timeframe for each action in the game coupled to the network traffic and needs to keep everything synchronized. Thus you technically have some kind of time-frame-rate-per-second. The more information the server has to calculate, process & synchronize between multiple clients and keep up to date, the more processing power is necessary and the lower the update rate creating what some people call low server FPS or commonly known as server side lag. Also a factor not to ignore is that in DayZ infected are calculated on a peer-to-peer basis. The AI runs locally, but the client communicates its AI actions to all other clients in proximity so that everyone in the end sees the same or similar actions as on the client handling the AI.

Nope killing a player that can run wherever he wants just because he hasn't found a weapon yet isn't spawn killing, its killing an unarmed player, thats all. Some people (quite few I'd say imo) desire to kill unarmed players, others do not (me included); that's just the way it is. Some people like bananas, others oranges. There is no "point" to make about it. The irony.

Generally - griefers exist everywhere, even in non sandbox games. "Spawnkilling" in Day Z really isn't really spawn killing is it now - it seems you've never been really spawn killed in other games. Spawn points are random and I've never met a player that shot me the instant my character was in the game and just moved 1m. Maybe I ran out on the street or close to the town and got killed there, but not at spawn. Destroying people's experience is another thing that is really vague. If two players meet, each one has a different wish how he wants to experience the game, but both do not know of the other's experience wish, so how would this be avoidable? Basically any interaction with another player means that at least one person's experience gets altered.

I'd say if you have so little blood (700) that you get knocked out all the time plus the broken legs and have no help, just go for it and do a last man standing thing.

Select Drop from Toolbelt, it gets placed into your primary weapon slot. Should you have a primary weapon, I'd advise to stow that away in your inventory first. Once you have the hatchet in your hands, "reload it", then you'll be able to attack with it. -

There is lots of hype and people looking for some kind of salvation from the generic dribble current fps games have become. I think even if the hype decreases, DayZ has enough of a foundation of fans to keep going for a while. On top of that, this mod is quite unique within the Games industry and is bound to regularly be mentioned or get some cover. Imo there are no right and wrong people, as much as there is no right or wrong way to play this mod. There are people who like this mod and will stick with it and others that jump ship as soon as something else interests them. The only one who would have reason to be really disappointed would be Rocket himself; I'm pretty sure whatever happens, this mod has proven so much that his base idea is great that it cannot turn into disappointment. Everything else is up to the players playing the mod (and eventually game), what they make out of it. -

Bandicam also displays the FPS for you if you don't like Fraps. The integrated benchmarks will give you a rough estimate as well. I usually have around 38 - 54 FPS (depends which benchmark) and I in DayZ I have around 45.

Just disable respawning for 5 minutes once you've logged in and your character is loaded in the game. For people who land in the dev forest or plains or some foresaken (in their opinion) place, they still can respawn after 5 minutes.
