why do people have difficulties starting w/o weapons
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Tikka (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Well I just died because somehow a zombie was right in front of me when I logged in near Vybor and now I had to start new without any weapon (for the first time). It was very awkward at first - also night time. I didn't use the flashlight because I have no clue if infected react. Finally I found the construction site in cherno. Found some stuff to eat and drink. Some shotgun shells, no gun though. After searching for 30 minutes I moved on to Cherno, hit some residentials. Again food, painkillers etc. no gun, just some ammo and a hatchet. Equipped hatchet, not sure if its any good, but better than nothing, right? So I moved into Cherno, hit the pub on the East. Found a backpack, food, ammo. On my way out down the stairs in crouch I somehow fell. Broken bones. I crawled to the hospital with infected everywhere. Found the meds, used morphine, took the rest. Crouch-Walked out of Cherno and hit one last residential and found a Makarov, ammo and bandages. Yay. Then I crouch walked out, moved north. Stepped on a road that I saw too late. Two soundbars. 3 Zombies killed me instantly. I think I killed one before I got unconscious and had to watch the hourglass slowly creeping along while my life was going away very fast. All in all it took me about 70 minutes to find a weapon, maybe I had bad luck as I've been having with loot all the time (best weapon up till now was an M4/G7 I think). The only dice I have is that it will now be even harder to convince my buddies to give it a try. Because in the beginning you get killed a lot even if you can sometimes defend yourself, there is a point of progress. Now there is no experience gain, there isn't a learning curve, more like a learning block because you die very, very easily. For someone starting DayZ its just another variable that shortens the period where he can learn how to survive. No orientation, no idea what to do, nothing to point at zombies. Yes its an anti-game, now more than ever before - and from my point of view not recommendable to someone new. -

How to find out where you are without map?
Lukio (DayZ) replied to despair (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Roads, powerlines, large rocks, ponds or even distinctive buildings (castles or radio tower) usually will give you a good indiation of where you are. You may want to go into the armory and fly around Chernarus with a chopper, like this you'll be able to ID most towns & areas before you can even see the signs. On top of that if there are some extreme height variations you could also be able to recognize where you are by the height lines. -
Reasons to huddle around a campfire..
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Redrick (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Have humanity go a bit the longer you sit at a campfire with at least 1 other player. It would in essence reflect the whole huddling, gazing, storytelling experience. -

Good stuff, thanks for the high frequency updates!

Clunky & user unfriendly file management of ARMA II and Gamespy browser rearing their ugly heads.

The calm down thread ( current 1.7.1)
Lukio (DayZ) replied to dissaifer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Currently for me the greatest "anti-game" part of 1.7.1 is trying to get this thing running at all, the latest beta patch has somehow seriously borked my Steam Install. Maybe running an alpha mod on a beta version isn't the best idea after all. The game/mod version fragmentation happening is also something that needs to be taken care of, even things like difficulty level and 3rd person/crosshair should be unified across all servers. Unfortunately ARMA II still has no integrated updater or version management. Also Gamespy Browser is the worst. I seriously hope it will not be a part of ARMA III. -
[How To] ArmA 2: CO + Steam Tracking and Overlay with Beta Patch
Lukio (DayZ) replied to xcryonic's topic in New Player Discussion
o.O This is like some Linux manual file or sth. I hope Steam won't give me a VAC ban for messing around with the game like that. Anyway thanks, I'll give it a shot. Update: Well now the game is running but something is really borked. Some servers that have 93825 required won't allow me to join, others that have 93825 let me join but no zombies/loot. I guess I'll have to wait until all this beta nonsense is over, currently the available DayZ servers are extremely fragmented between DayZ version, ARMA II beta versions and general settings. This is one of the gripes I've had with ARMA II again and again - game/mod fragmentation. -
[How To] ArmA 2: CO + Steam Tracking and Overlay with Beta Patch
Lukio (DayZ) replied to xcryonic's topic in New Player Discussion
Since the newest beta 93825 the game will throw various errors, either some "Can not find CAMisc_x_y files", "Missing xy.config" or "Error creating Direct 3D graphical engine".. Using Steam version, launch parameters are: -beta=Expansion\beta;ca;Expansion\beta\Expansion -mod=@DayZ;ca -cpucount=6 -exThreads=7 -nosplash -world=Chernarus I start the game by launching "ARMA II: Combined Operations". Steam is launched in Administrator world. Both the beta .exe and .dll have been copied over into the main directory. I know these errors are not directly related to DayZ but to the underlying beast which is named ARMA II, anyone have ideas how to get this fixed? -
Super Realistic (Since Difficult=Realistic here)
Lukio (DayZ) replied to ProphetMatt's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The current average lifetime is 32 minutes. People seem to be dying a lot as it is now, so no. Might also put more strain on the servers or master database. -
Forum moderators and a decent set of rules?

Are you suggesting that food should just replenish the hunger status? Just asking because for me "Health = Blood Level + Hunger+ Thirst + Temperature". Personally I'd prefer uncooked food to give much less blood than cooked food, but disconnecting it from the blood level is a bit too much. I'd rather see food have a weaker effect (1/4th of current) on blood level and add in water having the same small effect on blood level.

Thank you everyone in the Dayz Dev Team for this update, I like the direction in which this mod is moving.

Some random dudes who woke up on a beach grab some scrap metal, gas, a rotor part and whatnot, then McGuyver up a totalled heli - of course its prone to have fuel leaks and other malfunctions! ;-D -

That's why i dont play in night servers.
Lukio (DayZ) replied to kissa3's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Possibly the server went into normal (EU time) because players on weekend are able to play during the day and it would suck if it would be night time all day. Just the same reason they have UTC-10 or whatever during the week. -

Dayz as an AntiGame (wall of text warning).
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Strategos (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I am generally with the OP. Just two things are disturbing me: 1) Day/Nighttime conundrum. Yes night is a very different factor in the game and makes it much scarier, but ONLY being able to experience the game at night isn't that great either, so i can understand people hopping on time-shift servers to enjoy some virtual rays of light. Its not always "breaking (non-existant) rules". 2) The best thing about this mod is that it has no defined end game, the only endgame that remains is player interaction. Maybe the endgame needs more functionality or structure, but there shouldn't be any new content or goals to achieve. Players are smart and will figure out for themselves what they want to make of it. -
Campfire mechanic - 'Fire Gazing'
Lukio (DayZ) replied to l mandrake's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Campfire stuff: 1. Matches / Lighter available in every second household / church (All those candles!) 2.Eating raw canned food = +50 blood / cooked canned food = +250 blood 3. Sitting (sit animation) near fireplace with another player gives +50 humanity every 5 minutes. Basis for more use of campfires: Culturally fire has always been important. It can provide safety from wild animals, give you warmth and the ability to cook food has brought a leap in human evolution. Fire of course has always been a threat as well, it makes enemies aware of your position, it can burn you and lay waste to your home. DayZ related: I do get that in an emergency situation you'd eat raw beans and other food, but over a longer period of time this would not be favourable to your health and you'd want to eventually find a way to eat cooked food. Generally making a fire to cook provisions you scavenged should be more common in an outdoor survival scenario and it should give you a small humanity boost if other players gather round to tell some tales about their adventures and possibly trade some items they found. Of course making the decision to cook your food exposes you to a larger risk from being spotted by bandits (and of course the zeds). All in all it would automatically get a player into a predicament on how he wants to consume his provisions in this dire world, which I find very fitting for the general theme of this mod. -
Please don't hate on me when you read this
Lukio (DayZ) replied to Piripon's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Current gen Consoles are not capable of handling such large terrains as Chernarus, you'd have to implement some kind of zoning or terrain streaming, as employed by many MMOs, but still a console would choke on the size of the world it has to display. -
One of the few multiplayer games that had great support for colour blind people was DAoC. It employed different characters like $ # % for poison, disease and stun (I don't remember exatcly) as well as + and - to indicate the approximate difficulty of enemies. Anyway how it could work in DayZ is having some kind of text indicator next to the icons: For the health meter for example: Full health: +++ Medium health: +/- Bad health: ---- Maybe it would be simpler to integrate a text based colour blind system, not graphical.

Agreed tentactle the OP is a bit broadly defined. If I remember from Fallout there were these robots flying around in the air, playing PSAs & music, you could receive music on your PIP thing as well. Probably this is more like what the OP means? Maybe randomly spawn a radio sound source in some of the not-enterable building, just for atmosphere, have it play some sound bit every 10-15 minutes. Personally it got on my nerves in Fallout, but thats just me I guess.

equpment\inventory system like in "Jagged Alliance 2, mod 1.13"
Lukio (DayZ) replied to vran113's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm not entirely sure, but as you are referring to Jagged Alliance, I dimly remember you being to be able to carry toolboxes, large medikits etc. in your backpack (and in your left hand while holding a sidearm in your right). I think the current inventory system is ok, you basically have a side pouch where you store your sidearm ammo and bandages, the rest goes into your front pouches and for everything else you have the backpack. The specialized backpacks you are suggesting reads to me like some part of ACE mods, where you have different backpacks for certain roles or things like wire cutters take away your backpack slot. -
- Before animals are introduced as companions, there should first be away to actually have a grouping / friend function i.e better socialize with other players. - That whole "Quest" to get a companion sounds like some WoW thing or something - currently does not seem fitting for the DayZ environment. - There are tons of dog huts around Chernarus (farm buildings) - why not randomly find a malnourished, leashed dog and just free him? - Dogs should only be useful for hunting / retrieving animals silently, as they are animals zeds ignore them anyway - Dogs should only be able to regain health by eating raw meat
