Steak and Potatoes definitely has some good tales to tell. Plus, he will bake you some fresh cookies to eat while you listen to him. -
Every Day Items Turned Into Useful Things
JeffDetroit replied to Mullraugh's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I understand where you're going with this, but you have to be careful about keeping a game "playable" without bogging it down with too many details. Though, yes, it is a simulation, it simulates the physical properties of projectile and organic motion first and foremost while encompassing a small subset of utility activity (like boiling water in an empty tin can to sterilize it). But if you introduce thousands of new utility actions that can challenge the fluid playability of the game. I don't think folks want to go through the steps needed to craft every little item, nor do they want to encounter and analyze every object in a thousand nooks and crevaces of a house. I do like that lootable items can be found in more places in a house (under a bed or in a cabinet) in the SA, but when you start going McGuyver on crafting a C130 out if paperclips and cheesecloth, I feel it would slow the game down too much. -
Ummm, are you saying that you have "friends" who are using a pirated copy of Arma2, and that you want to report them to some authority? Errrr.... try "The A-Team"?

Wow Gews, that was a very thorough analysis. I never realized the important nuances of these weapons. The variable damage done at different distances is a new one for me. Cool and useful information laid out clearly.

I'm cooking up a good one for today. It's even making me pee my own pants. Which is problemmatic as I'm at work.

Yeah, it sounds a bit crazy, but I like the minimalist challenge of just using my cellphone's touch screen. I use my "outdated" Samsung Galaxy-S, along with: SketchBook (for the initial drawing) - it's like Adobe Acrobat with lots of filters, layering, translucence PicSay Pro (for "ploids") little extra bits like sweat-droplets, shading Comic StripIt Pro (to pull in the individual cells (typically 6) and add the text bubbles and text POWS and such) Document Scanner (this converts the Comic Strip It 6 panel into a .pdf) DropBox (I plunk the .pdf into this Cloud Database so I can get a tiny-link for posting in the DayZ Forum) Yes, I could use my desktop's primo graphic software, drawing tablets, etc but then I'd be limited to drawing at home. With the cellphone, you lose a little on the quality, but you can keep drawing wherever you may be. I was making some panels from the dentist chair last week (while waiting for the novacaine to kick in); or in the car (while waiting for the 100 car freight train to pass).

Daisy... good idea! Nah, you're not too late - I laid out the idea for today's strip and am halfway through the drawing of it on my phone. But, I'm also at work (litigation research) so sometimes my paying job gets preference over my fun stuff. Boo! But rest assured, it will be posted soon. Jeff

Planet F8L Is starting *fresh*
JeffDetroit replied to SaraMichelle's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
The re-set server has sprinkled the vehicles and loot all over the map. It is like Christmas and Chanukah for lone wolf strolling. Though, I prefer to Pee Wee Herman it around the map (on a bike) for its ease in stealth and hiding it. Too bad you can't camouflage a military humvee with the fishing boat skin, it'd NEVER be taken! -

Too bad you can't shoot from the PBX while it's in motion! (I'm thinking of those "Deathrace 2000" films) Perhaps the Boating Regatta Race can have some tasks... Like you deploy from Kamenka, have to pilot your PBX to Skalisty Island (past the snipers) where you have to pick up another person... Then to Berezino to pick up a 3rd person... then make it back to Kamenka with at least 1 person in your PBX alive... Extra points if 2 or 3 people are still alive in your PBX. -
Buy Arma2 set or wait for the standalone?
JeffDetroit replied to switchblade10's topic in New Player Discussion
Actually, I'm not going to buy the DayZ Standalone until verson 8 comes out. That's when we'll be in holographic rooms, wearing sensory-tactile feedback suits and shit... (literally...shit... spread all over the feedback suit). Short answer: Buy everything you can afford, immediately! -
My first time playing in a long time, this is what i am greeted with...
JeffDetroit replied to Tweakie's topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
Yes, the Mod has changed to "Drunken-DayZ" where all of the survivors have flashbacks and think they're either flying or swimming in the sea. The mod plays much better if you're high at the time... -
Episode 18 - Nooby McNoob and Man's Best Friend: http://db.tt/nHk5L0lI Attention! Nooby's dog needs a name. Give me a suggestion and I'll roll one of my old dungeon and dragon's dies to pick one off the list and use the name in the comic! Yeah, curse words are allowed. I'll roll it Thursday morning.

No really, I can totally see a boat race. -
Don't get me wrong, I love using my TrackIR 5 in DayZ, who doesn't? Yah get to "look around" with your IRL head movements. What's tah hate? For those not in the know, TrackIR is basically a webcam on your monitor that is monitoring where 3 little reflectors are (mounted on a baseball cap you wear) in space OR sees a trio of infrared lights on a totally fragile plastic "tree" that's clamped to your headphones. The software works it's spatial math, and Boom, it translates your head movements in-game. (Shhh, everyone is asleep now) So, I'm wearing my TrackIR "tree" on my headphones, running through some apocalyptic town (that looks like a current day Detroit) being chased by zombies (of course!) with my axe (bc that's how I roll) and as I'm looking around my TrackIR ain't track'n MY head. Who knows, it may be tracking my dogs head for all I know, but I'm running in-game with the viewpoint from my shoes (which by this time are coated in virtual urine) while the Zeds are bitch-slapp'n me, and I'm thinking if I just wasted $150 and am I gonna have to revert to my Num-pad for lookie-loos. You are Dead. Okay, time to see what the F happened with my nerd-toy. Apparently, the software somehow switched monitoring for the infra-red tree device I use, to the uber-nerd cap n' reflector system, throwing the whole tracking system temporarily into the toilet. Now that I wasted a good 3 minutes of your life (sorry) you can return to the 25 minute "Server Loading Screen" for your next DayZ session.

TrackIR 5 - the hat that got me killed
JeffDetroit replied to JeffDetroit's topic in New Player Discussion
@Elias: There are some Track-IR profiles online that you can download to get started. And then tweak them a bit to your own degrees. I like how you can "gradually" lean, and incrementally zoom as opposed to the keyboard's Zoom all the way, look exactly left etc. I'm not sure if there is an advantage or not to the uber-gamer, but for a Noob like me, it makes things quite natural for looking around corners; while going up and down ladders; and standing up in tents (kidding). -

We should have a boat regatta racing event. Participating players start off on Kamenka in PBXes, and have to get up to Berezino in the fastest time, while other players are lined up along the coastline, with sniper rifles picking players off. -

TrackIR 5 - the hat that got me killed
JeffDetroit replied to JeffDetroit's topic in New Player Discussion
I have been enjoying my Track IR 5 with DsyZ for a while and I've found it to be a seamless experience. When DayZ is loading, and I'm waiting for the 1st-Person interaction with the Track IR to "kick in" it sort of feels like that scene in Avatar where the "soldiers" are syncing with their blue-bodied counterparts. Yes, while I could just use the keyboard for head movement, I find it very natural to simply move my head slightly to have an in-game synchronized viewpoint.
