DayZ Developer blog 26th April, Video from PAX and our latest "building"

Ammo making. I don't know... I love the details that the military simulator uses (bullet drop, hunger/thirst) but when you start to tweak the game to simulate everything, those extreme details might interfere with fluid gameplay. Though, I still think the game designers should allow for survivors to toss banana peels behind them to slip-up the Zeds on your heels. -
I have a love/hate relationship for the background music. It is completely random and non-event triggered, and that does raise the fright/stress value of the game but the music also gets in the way of hearing crucial cue sounds (like the footsteps of a bandit coming up the stairs to kill you). Though, I like the b.g. music for its DayZ feeling. Probably better for non-PvP gameplay.

Love the diagrams Gews. If the survivors were THAT skinny, they would definitely be harder to hit! For getting used to shooting at distances, it does make sense to practice in the Arma2 editor/armory (or on DayZ servers that give you the ranges on tags). I prefer the axe, the range finder is easier to use and it doesn't run out of ammo!

TrackIR 5 - the hat that got me killed
JeffDetroit replied to JeffDetroit's topic in New Player Discussion
To look "behind" (let's say 170°) from front view in-game you are actually turning your nose to point at the left or right edge of your monitor screen (so you're not actually turning your real-life head that much) The software is completely adjustable (so folks with 1-7,000 monitors can set it up for the "degrees of actual motion" that they prefer) and pre-set "profiles" are available for many different games. About "Oculus Rift" - it looks amazing (via You Tube videos) but like others said, "how the heck do you peek down at your keyboard to see the odd button to press?" The unit is strapped to your head covering your whole range of vision! Great for immersion value, but it'd interfere with my actual keyboard interaction (and DayZ has lots and lots of keys to press. By the way, I am left-handed, so to answer a question earlier about why I didn't revert to keypresses for looking - I have re-keybinded all of the keys for lefthanded use (the Num-Pad is now all for character movement, the WASD re-used for other DayZ functions). -
From 500 meters, I see they're carrying a Lee Enfield
JeffDetroit posted a topic in New Player Discussion
I always get a kick out of those You Tube videos from Frankie and JackF and others where they're running around full blast, and spot some survivor through their shaky gun-scope (or even via eyeballing them, and tell us what the person is wielding. Heck, I have a hard enough time seeing the survivor at 100 meters let alone what they're using to kill me! I'm half expecting them to say: "He's carrying Lee Enfield, with 4 rounds in it, and a side arm of a Makatov, and that has 6 rounds in it, and his Czech backpack has 2 cans of beans... AND he's saying this while standing in Berezino, looking through binoculars at the survivor in Balota! -
So I'm in a warehouse, newly spawned, in Kamenka when I see out the upper story's window what appears to be a PBX sitting in the field (!?). I haven't encountered a boat 80 meters inland before so I asked around in Side-Chat about it. Someone said that if I jump in, turn on the engine, it will move, slowly, but it will move. Hmmm. Well, there was a jerrycan in the warehouse which I grabbed for fueling up my new ride and decided, since the field was crawling with Zeds, that, what the hell, I'll run to it, fuel it up fast, and make a clean getaway (from the field... ...in a boat) Yeah... So here I am, making aggro up the wazzu... I fuel the fu%ker, get in, gun the engines (it starts!) Surrounded by Zeds (about 8). Absolutely no movement at all. Of course there wasn't, the frigg'n boat is in the middle of a field! Needless to say, THAT maiden voyage went nowhere. I got out, ran like hell, trailing laughing Zeds behind me like a mad conga line.

@Steak n Potatoes: Too funny! I'm imagining myself sitting in my "S.S. Fail" armed with my axe, challenging all boarders. "Avast ye scalliwags, yer not ginna git me ship less ye pry it from my cold dead fingers" Boom!

Okay, now that we have the Titanic (or whatever you want to name that leviathan) can we please have working flush toilets in the bars? After consuming 35 cans of beans I really have to go! -
Good question. No, while I was sitting in my totally immobile PBX, I was not actually being hit by the chorus group of Zeds around the boat. And yes, I did enjoy the hopeful sounds of the sea that were being "farted" out of the PBX that was obviously trolling me.

Yeah, must have been a tow or scripted. I was so darned excited, too. But these are the funzie moments in DayZ where you're trying something out, possibly putting your character's life in jeopardy, and sure enough, totally goofed up. That's why new spawns are so "dangerous" - literally nothing to lose. Yah want to run through town at night with a flare, why not!

After seeing the fantastic work of "Doctor Dentist" I decided to modify his skins and slap my ugly mug on to use in DayZ/Arma2. https://www.dropbox....troitSkin.jpg?m I haven't tried it out yet but plan to tomorrow. Which brings up the question: "Has anyone else made their own DayZ skins and are they willing to share?" What skins do people have in mind that they'd want to use? I was thinking a face with a red/white series of concentric circles like a target; or perhaps a collection of eyeballs (like a dozen, amassed). Note: no, those aren't my eyes and arms... but that is my bald-spot. Hey, WTF, I never said I was a pin-up!

Yeah, that guy in the middle looks like a refugee from "Blue Man Group" - But there definitely is no mistaking Friendly for Enemy with THOSE colors.

I can definitely appreciate the added realism. Obviously the fog creates a more ominous setting and defiintely more chances for suddenly running up to zombies (let alone other survivors). It also takes away the 100% advantage that the sniper has up in the bushes in the trees 500 meters (or more) away. If the computers won't slow down to a snail's pace because of the additional particle effects, then it is a no-brainer. One of the drawbacks is for new players who lack the knowlege base of the city layout of enterable buildings. The diminished distance that a player can see means lots of stumbling around buildings not knowing if they can be looted. But that would be the case anyway for a new survivor.

Name it the "S.S. Minnow" Isn't it obvious!? -
Hmmm, a name for new spawns other than Bambi or Noob: Czechies (bc they spawn with a nearly empty one); GreenBeaners (kinda like a "greenhorn" but with beans, obviously); BamBams (after The Flintstones, and they shoot off the loudest guns in cities instead of running past Zeds); Flotsam (the stuff that is carried in on top of the waves at the beach (coastal new spawns))
-
Good subject. Even if we can't all agree on the "names" - knowing the various modes of operation is useful. Beyond: bambi, noobs, lone-wolf, bandits, snipers, highwaymen, and squadies, there are: "chicken-blasters" the beginning players who scare easily and fire their entire semi-auto clip into the wildlife; "rooftoppers" who camp up high to check out the city and get popped by snipers; "gear turtles" confused players who take forever to work through their inventory system to load their shit, while sitting out in the open; "tent hounds" players who spend hours tramping through forests looking for other player's tents to raid; "dinner bells" new players who needlessly fire off noisy guns attracting zeds; and "Conga Liners" players who run down the highway out of town with a bunch of aggroed zeds on their tail.

I just looked all over Pusta and I didn't see that gigantic gun anywhere! How many slots does it take up anyhow? 1,000?!

I created a handy collection of keyboard "key labels" that you can cut out and stick on your keyboard (duh) to make it clear what button does what in-game. Does it improve your gameplay? Perhaps, Perhaps not... but it does seem to help me with my new keybinding (I'm left handed) to the numberpad. Oh, and I've supplied you links to the .pdf so you can use it if you want (or not). https://www.dropbox....sforLefties.pdf Some photos: https://www.dropbox....adCloseUp.jpg?m https://www.dropbox....lkeyboard.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.... keyboard.jpg?m

Labels for Keyboard (esp. for Lefties)
JeffDetroit replied to JeffDetroit's topic in New Player Discussion
If anyone wants an edit to the key labels, let me know. The "double-width" horizontal and vertical keys might not work on your particular keyboard layout, if not, let me know which and I can modify them. The white/black ink contrast shows up better (than the regular keyboard) in a dark computer room. -
