For me, being a relatively new player in DayZ, but having consumed a good helping of tutorial videos, I think I've robbed myself of the intended experience (of mystery) - but, I like to use the simpler weapons and it increases the danger level for me.

I like the simple things, like when it is night time, and you don't have ANYTHING to navigate with toolwise so you use the in-game signposts, landmarks and knowing the clouds move East, and you end up exactly where you intended to go.

Lucid Dreams about DayZ and How They Adapt
JeffDetroit posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I remember a story I heard on National Public Radio about a scientist who was studying dreaming and how he could increase the chances for lucid dreams by having his test subjects play a virtual reality game of skiing down a mountain slope. These dreams were of "you" actively manipulating/participating in your own dream, as if you were running your very own virtual reality game in your own head instead of on your computer. The test subjects played the semi-realistic skiing game for hours, then, they would go to sleep. They would begin to dream about... skiing or skiing-like things and the scientist asked them to keep a journal about what their dreams were about. It turns out that initially, they would be dreaming of themselves skiing down the mountain, as if they were really doing it, and making actual choices in their dreams about how they moved. Then, the dreams, after a time, adapted, transformed via other specific associations in the brain, some people were sledding down the mountain, others were dreaming of falling from tremendous heights, still more, that they were being chased. So, my question to you is: "Having played this zombie apocalypse virtual reality game for long stretches of time, many of us just before going to sleep, have you had lucid dreams about being in the game? And what choices occurred in your DayZ dream, what was different? -
Lucid Dreams about DayZ and How They Adapt
JeffDetroit replied to JeffDetroit's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
@RabidDiabetic: and that's exactly what I was saying, how the dreams transform/personalize. I guess it was good that your fiancee wasn't watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the time! After a while of practicing lucid dreaming, you can eventually play more selectively "in the game, in your dream" Unfortunately, I'm about as bad a shot in my dreams as I am in-game! (but at least there's no Battle-Eye) -

You guys described great dream sequences. I think it helps (for dreams) if you're kinda trespassing into your normal sleep span. I was on for a while in Planet F8L, from 10:30p.m. to about 2a.m. (I know, I'm a lightweight...) and it was a really good session, stopped suddenly by my wife walking into the room furious that I woke her up after I was apparently shouting "Friendly Friendly" to f8lerror (the Admin) who surprised me at the NW Airfield. Sheepishly excusing myself from the game with abort, I hightailed it directly to bed and was quickly asleep. The next thing I know, I'm right back at the NW Airfield (but now in my dream) and I'm proning all over the place and there's zombies, those monkey hopping fu+kers (hate those most of all), all around me and I know they're seeing me and I can't stand up to run, I'm still proning like mad. Suddenly I'm nudged awake by my wife, it is now like 4a.m. and she says my "Jimmy-Legs" are waking her up and I'm murmuring "Friendly" in my sleep! She said, for her sake (and mine!) that I shouldn't have those late night gaming sessions unless I want a pillow over my face! -
Green Mountain! Shhhhh. We're not supposed to talk about Gre...... (ack!)

Am I the only person that really doesn't care for 'base building'?
JeffDetroit replied to Target Practice (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think that if there was a little personalization (low level) it'd be fun to be able to "find a spray can" and (go into tagging mode) be able to put up your own markings, warnings, clan-sign. I know this could be a data/bandwidth problem if there were 5,000 individually spraypainted graphics that had to be "broadcasted" but perhaps there could be a 1 per player limit (your previous spray painted tag would delete upon making a new one). Then folks could "decorate" their bandit house, their base, or even "post" an in-game message, warning, or threat on a wall in Cherno. -

I was struggling to get through that narrow upper door of the lighthouse, ran "too far" and right off the lighthouse catwalk. Heck, I just wanted the view!

Where do I hide all these vehicles!
JeffDetroit replied to RabidDiabetic's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Best way to hide your vehicles? In the middle of the NW Airfield, with a satchel charge armed and ready to blow - and about 10 minutes of waiting time in the trees. (evil snicker) -
Guns confuse me. Plus there's that whole running out of ammo thing. That's why I like the axe. (after I reload it, of course)

Did I type "clams" ? I meant "clans" - though, having clams in DayZ would be delicious! -

Great topic question. DayZ satisfies many different peoples urges in many different ways. Some players want PvP experiences; some want tribal associations in clans, groups etc, others want to just explore and observe; still others want a quest like base building; many just want that zombie survival experience. There are a million different reasons we each have for participating and if all of these things (for the most part) do occur in the same game/mod without jeopardizing other player's needs, then you're basically having a more representative simulator that satisfies everyone. Just like the real world, in a sense, some of us like to join a fraternity/sorority(clans); some like to support a local sports team(tribes); some want a huge house and yard(base building) etc - and they may or may not have those things in real life but in-game they can satisfy those needs. While a person may not like base building because they feel it promotes hoarding of loot and gives an unfair advantage to some players who can respawn and re-gear easily; hoarding is a real thing (thinking about those survivalists on the reality show "Preppers") and a player who is anti-base building is playing the role of a real life person who simply got "caught in the zombie apocalypse unaware and non-supplied" Nobody said the game is about fairness - it is about personal choices for survival: hoarders, clams, lone-wolfs, bandits, heroes - it is all good in a game-world where everything has gone to hell. -
Optimising DayZ for low end pc

Big pants, sunglasses and "adopt" a golden retreiver from the local dog-pound. It's simple, make a quickie harness out of duct tape, put on the dark sunglasses, then walk into your local Best Buy and when nobody is looking... shove one of those fancy shmantzy gaming laptops right in your pants! Then amble right out of the store. Problem = Solved! JeffDetroit -Jackson Correctional Facility Doing 10-15 Years for larceny -
Diary Entry: I decided to go up to Green Mountain. I heard that if you use a car battery, you can fry the control panel on the level with the locked hatch and open it up. Bet there's a bunch of good loot up there. Bringing my camera to take photos of my success. See yah suckers...

DO ADMINS PI$$ YOU OFF??!!
JeffDetroit replied to SaraMichelle's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Sara, do you get attacked by cans of beverages often? You might want to consider wearing a helmet while you're at work, you know, for safety reasons! This looks like a really fun hunt. See you Saturday! -
Typically, the "textbook" says logging out in an unpopulated locale, like in a tree, beside town, is the basic spot. But I like the opportunity for surprising myself and/or another player by aborting/logging out in a busy PvP location. If you get on to a typically popular server, at an off time, and navigate to a hot-spot to log-off, then during the peak times you're bound to have a fun Shazzam! moment. Logging Out at the top of the tower at Green Mountain.

DayZ Graphics Settings Tutorial - Should help new & existing players see clearer
JeffDetroit replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
Useful tutorial, even if you're not a sniper because squeezing out more frames-per-second is important to everyone! -
@trexeth: I thought, and was hoping, you'd end that last sentence as "...I ask him to place weapon on the ground, and when he does it, I SHOOT HIM!“ While laughing in direct chat. No, of course we'd never do that... ...ahem...

"can't be bothered to trek North" - but surely you're using the Tardis?! (it came on the latest mod)

This is starting to look like one of those "Mad Libs" books I'd fill in the blanks with as a kid. Personally, for storytelling, I prefer to use the Sixth person. His name is Moe and he lives in a treestump (next to the tent).
