How about a new idea. When you are hit and bleeding. It leaves a blood trail. So if a zombie happens across the trail then they will start to follow the trail. Unless you stop the bleeding which would then stop the trail at the point that you healed the wound. Also, the idea of if you die by a zombie attack, then you rise as a zombie with all gear that player had minus what was held in hands. Or you could go the resident evil route, and if you die anyway then you rise, unless you were killed because of head trauma i.e. 50 cal. bullet threw the brain. Just thoughts!
