The damn fence clang and horse sounds need to go.

I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting in a house and heard a fence door slam shut outside. Whenever I go out to check it, though, not only is there never a fence door where the sound originated, there's often not even a fence door within 200 meters! How many times have you been sprinting, crouching, or creeping through the woods when you've heard a horse snort, despite the fact that Day Z doesn't actually have horses as a life form in the game? Think about it: have you ever seen a horse in Cheranus, even once? If you're anything like me, that magic invisible horse follows your ass around 24/7. He probably has a fence door tied to his back or something. These sounds don't add immersion, they don't create tense moments of paranoia or give life to an otherwise barren world. They're so obviously out of place that the only function they serve is to remind you exactly how artificial the world you're in is. Twig snaps also get annoying, but those actually make sense and create emotional tension. I'm leaving those alone for now. -
Are custom faces from clients enabled or diabled by default?

I'm making a custom face for my character in Day Z right now (even though it won't see much use, since you can't use custom female faces), and I was wondering how many servers were likely to allow it. To that end, I'm wondering if this option is something you have to enable in the configs somewhere (and probably not prevelant amongst Day Z servers) or something on by default? ...and apparently I can't spell disabled in my titles. Lovely. -
I used to play on NY14 hosted by Africanized Bees, but I haven't seen it around for a good while. When I look up their server IP, it says their name is now US 1589 and that they're hosted by Vipeax. Anyone know what happened? I've searched google and the forums, but haven't found anything about this. http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/209.159.159.134:2314/

Partly as celebration of my 500th post, and partially just to tell the story, I'm releasing part one of my multi-part story on Operation Screaming Thunder. What's that? You'll have to read and find out! I can tell you that it's designed to explain some discrepancies in the Day Z universe, while also providing a bit of good old-fashioned non canon light hearted flavour. I'll update this post until all the parts are in and the story is told. Don't expect too much of me; it's relatively short and fairly ridiculous. Feel free to leave support, criticism, or even just good old hate for the story here, and while I can't take suggestions on the direction of the narrative, I'm very open to ones about its delivery. So here we go, part one of Operation Screaming Thunder! _____“Right this way, gentlemen, it's just beyond this hangar.” beckoned Field Marshall James Bradley, leading his procession down a disused shell that used to house one of the RAF's finest. Everything from his freshly shined boots to his superbly combed mustache beamed enthusiastic energy; this was a man on the verge of triumph. _____“Are you ready to tell us what it is yet, Bradley?” Defense Minister Edward Hawkins asked irritably. “We can only give up so much of our time for this supposed breakthrough, and frankly, all I've seen to justify my cancellations for the day are a bunch of old buildings and some ridiculous claims”. _____“All in good time, sir,” reassured Bradley, ”I guarantee that you'll feel differently about this when we get to the tarmac." _____Prime Minister Charles Saxton strutted along without comment. It had been three years since this base and every one like it had been mothballed with the dismantlement of the RAF. Three years since economic crisis had reduced the Crown to an army and her boats, but only six months since the outbreak that had mocked her actions. _____Europe was slowly losing a battle to contain the infection, and England was stuck ferrying supplies, watching the reports of cases draw slowly closer. All the guns in the world did no good if you couldn't shoot them without getting infected. Their early attempts at neutralizing infected zones via bombardment had proved even more suicidal; the only places concentrations were high enough to target was at the front of the wave, where there were people to draw them out. _____Saxton was in a hole all right, and it was shrinking around him. The acting emergency legislation meant he didn't have to worry about Parliament ousting him from office, but in a few more months he might not have a position to hold, if he was even still alive and sane. It was as he was pondering these thoughts that the group cleared the doors of the hanger, and Prime Minister Saxton found himself wondering who had turned out the lights. _____The whole procession stopped. Its members milled about in varying states of confusion. DM Hawkins polished his glasses, PM Saxton stood there trying to understand what he was seeing, and FM Bradley just stared at them, beaming like child who's just invented the radio a hundred years early. _____There was nothing in front of them. Just a wall of pure black steel that blotted out everything else in their vision. It stretched for what seemed like a mile in either direction, and when you looked up... _____The aides snapped into action with towelettes as Secretary of Defense Jenna Cartwright vomited. She always did have an issue with vertigo. _____“What the hell are we looking at?” asked DM Hawkins, all trace of derision gone from his tone.

My best guess would be to load up an empty mission, set it to permanent thunderstorm, and stand on top of a mountain overnight or something.

I play devil's advocate a lot. Many people say they're open to new information or to being corrected, but for many of them, when they actually get shown that they're wrong, they lash out at others to protect their own egos. There's not always a reason for people's hate. It's often irrational, and if it is, about the only thing you can do is say your piece and walk away. -

No. This game is brutal, it's hard, it's difficult to run, and it's full of glitches. We're not going to lie to you and say it's a magical self-installing cakewalk of sunshine. If this kind of game appeals to you enough, you'll make the choice to buy it. That choice is yours though. It's your money, your game, and your experience; we can't make the decision for you. Do the research, think about it, and make an informed decision. -

So you fucked up throwing a grenade, and are pissed at yourself? Get familiar with the throwing mechanics, it gets pretty easy once you get some experience under your belt. Also, you can break that glass with everything from tin cans to small arms fire. -

Go into your game in the Steam library, right-click it, go to properties, and select Verify Integrity of Game Cache Make sure that you're running the beta executable using the correct path with the correct accompanying files. -

Yeah, fuck everyone who wants to get a vehicle! Having to defend your stuff is so boring. Maybe one day we'll get our tents locked so only we can loot them, and our characters locked so only we can shoot ourselves. -

We already have a disarming friendly emote for people to use. Press the \ key.

I think that if you want to see a squad overwhelmed by zombies, you need to grab some AKMs and a Ural and go drive into a pack. Day Z is about creating your own gameplay, not having it randomly handed to you as pre-generated content.

I am holding an M249 right now. I'm cycling through all my throwables, and there is no "single" firing mode. Furthermore, while I don't expect you to know that semi-automatic firing is the same as a single firing mode (minus the potential question of whether the next round chambers automatically), I do expect you to hear it after I say it twice. Blow me off if you want, but what I'm saying is true. -
Should be able to run all right on low to medium. Your mileage will vary significantly depending on how Day Z and Arma II interact with your particular parts.
