First, you need to get a knife.

You have to use your smarts. You're not going to get friends by being nice because they may just kill you. If you are in a position of control, it may be possible to get a tangible proof that you can trust him and he has to get something back so he can trust you. You know, like a cop who has to deal with a hostage taker. This psych stuff isn't so easy but the game shouldn't do that work for you.

Another possibility would make the lockable pack not the default, but a special one you have to find.

We need more real skills (such as actually knowing how to fly a heli or shoot a sniper rifle from a great distance) instead of magically getting abilities from 'reading' a book. Also, this isn't the military or civilian life where you need a special license to fly. Anything goes so if you find a heli, you can just take it and if you don't know what you're doing and just crash, well that's just too bad.

You should never think that just because you killed scores of zombies that you are safe. Real life doesn't come with indicators that pop up. Maybe there's one zombie you overlooked and he's right in back of you... I'm also in favor of having to confirm your kills the old fashioned way (seeing the body yourself) instead of getting a text confirmation from the game.
