lol currently I'm right in the area of Zelenogorsk and Green Mountain... After reading this thread I realise I should probably get the hell away from there...

Something should be done about damage you can take
James Hawke replied to Kal_Zakath's topic in General Discussion
For me it's more the damage that some of my gear takes and less the damage that I take... I had a zombie attack me once who ruined my backpack. Half of the stuff in the backpack was ruined too now, including a machete and a protective case. In the protective case there was now ruined cans of food. I mean seriously, how the hell does a zombie manage to ruin canned food in a protective case in a backpack??? -
I had learned that lesson in the mod. If you randomly help someone against zombies, they will try and help themselves to your gear. Zombies are rare enough - if someone manages to have a tail of four of them... he kinda had it coming...

Game starts in ducked resolution 300x 420 etc.
James Hawke replied to Ganjamaster's topic in Troubleshooting
I believe you should try and uninstall/reinstall the game completely... -
I'm playing DayZ fine on Win8.1, 64bit, also with an i7quad and a GT740M. Never had problems with that particular game, really.

#1: Social interaction will get you killed. #2: If it holds an edge, you can open a can with it. #3: If you can see the zombie's face, the zombie can see you. Distance doesn't matter. #4: Going to an airfield, a military camp or a large city is suicidal, but suit yourself. #5: You don't want to run with fresh spawns unless you know them personally.

I'm hearing those sounds as well. While at first they drove me pretty mad, it is easy to distinguish most of them from the real thing. Zombie noises that are cut off are nothing 90% of the time. A real zombie will make the whole noise. The can opening as well, you only hear it opening but you don't hear someone drinking - ergo, nobody there. It's another thing with the tinkling sound though, I think it sounds like it does when I pick up loose ammo but I'm not sure if I could actually hear it if someone else did that.

You look like a smurf. What do you expect on gaining by dressing like that? KOS players will kill you regardless of what you look like, and walking around like a blue christmas tree only makes you that much easier to spot...

You hear someone say, "Hello?"
James Hawke replied to Death By Crowbar's topic in New Player Discussion
I'm the one who knocks... uh... who says "Hello" :P Did that yesterday... I was in an empty town, some of the doors were open so I figured, someone was here but is long gone... well he wasn't. Last house I planned on going through I sat in the entrance when I heard the revealing pop of a soda can in the adjacent room. All I had, really, was my axe. But I guessed he was alone and just tried my luck so I said "Hello?". A few seconds later he came out with his M4 drawn but luckily he didn't shoot. He didn't say anything at first so I just kept talking "Don't worry, I'm friendly. Do you have anything to trade?" He still didn't shoot and even lowered his gun, which was nice. We talked a bit, back and forth, from his accent I'd say he was French. He asked me whether I had 5.56 ammo - I only had an M4 but no bullets or mags for it so I declined and asked him in turn whether he had .22 ammo for my Amphibia. He declined, so in the end he ended up giving me the splint that I needed for my fracture (I'd been trying to find sticks but couldn't find any) and gave him a scope for that. K. Thanks. Bye. Have fun. Gone. Went well ^^ -
I was hopelessly lost once despite having a compass, a map and a friggin' castle ruin to go by. I was on top of the castle tower, looking around for familiar sights to doublecheck them with the map... I couldn't find a damn thing. Hell I didn't even know WHICH castle ruin it was that I was in. Mountains and valleys everywhere. From where I came I assumed I could be somewhere near the NWAF. Turns out, I was closer to Chernogorsk than anywhere else, on the ruin near Vishnoye and Mogilevka... I had no clue how I got there... My navigation skills suck xD

Hello Everyone-Unfair Deaths Anyone?
James Hawke replied to flamegunner3457's topic in New Player Discussion
Yeah, I suppose that's what happened. But if you can't avoid getting hit at all, it seems pretty unfair that a happily bugging-out npc has a good chance to kill you with one blow to wherever the server thinks he's aiming at. If he happens to face me, I can't avoid him due to superhuman perception, if I aggro him I can't lose him because he's faster than me and can hit me while on high-speed pursuit, if I try to fight him while moving myself I can't hit him properly, if I stand still he won't stand still either but rather stand behind me, ass facing me, hitting in the other direction and still doing damage to me. -
It is possible to sneak past any zombie, if he's facing the other way. If he's facing your way, you aggro him. Even if the only reason you just happen to even recognise him is that you are watching him through your binoculars. He could be on the moon for pity's sake - If he faces you, he sees you.

Well I do hope they polish the zombie AI and movement properly before introducing more of them. I just had to kill ten of them with a wrench just to get out of the first town after spawning. And I'm not exactly a conspicuous player.

Hello Everyone-Unfair Deaths Anyone?
James Hawke replied to flamegunner3457's topic in New Player Discussion
I'm not sure if this is an "unfair" death, but I think so...: I just lost my longest surviving character. Finally made it to the NW Airfield, approaching it from the north (I think) trying to get into the military camp. I was quite wary, hoping there were no other players around and as far as I could see, there were none. At least nowhere close to me. I hate the zombie AI. Some ignore you completely, some can see you lying on the ground in the forest picking your nose half a mile away. I don't get it. Anyway, of course there were some zeds in the camp. Heard one scream and got beat up some before I could finally hit him in the head. Bandaged myself quickly, ate all my stuff to get my blood back up, what little I had lost of it. The next one ignored me, I could just sneak up on him, one hit and he was down. So now I got ready to enter the first tent. I couldn't see any more zeds nearby so I thought, go. I never ran, I never even stood up, I just snuck into the tent. Now I hear a zombie screaming again, okay, no big deal, he saw me through the wall or heard my beard grow or whatever they do, so I tried to get out my axe to finish him off but as quickly as I heard him scream, he was right behind me, just swung at me once and I was dead instantly before I could even have one hit at him. I HATE the zombies... -
Why do you shoot unarmed players?
James Hawke replied to maninthewall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I never shoot unarmed people. Actually I barely ever shoot at all. I walk around with a hatchet to off zombies silently. But I gave up helping people I don't know. I saw a guy running away from a group of zombies, obviously unarmed and just spawned. I had a hatchet so I asked him to wait a second so I could finish them off for him. He thanked me, asked me to follow him and the next chance he found his own hatchet he rammed it into my back. Never. Again. I didn't even have anything with me except starting loadout and the hatchet. Now I just tend to sneak and observe. If I see a player, armed or unarmed, I just watch him out of some bush until I'm positive he moved on. I was shot at several times though while unarmed. Most recent was actually the most screwed-up. My friend and me were standing in a forest with two jeeps we happened to find shortly before. I heard a helicopter so I told him to wait until it passed. Which it did. Then it turned around and opened fire. My friend was shot, I took one car and drove. That helicopter, with at least three or four people on it, followed me, shot down the car until I had to leave it, crawling away bleeding. They still chased me but apparently had problems finding me. They even dropped one or two guys to hunt me down on foot. So there I was, armed with a hatchet, blood next to nothing, seeing next to nothing and ultimately logging out. And I don't see this as combat logging. This was no combat. This was a freakin' manhunt. Not funny.
