DayZ Epoch has turned what was Vanilla into the best multiplayer tactical survival game on the market; DayZ Epoch http://dayzepoch.com is a modification of DayZ set in a future time after the Great Infection.. Just check it out. The only thing it can't do is fix the zombie pathing, but that is off-set with the very broad value of greater player-influenced game-play mechanics and dynamic missions, building, crafting, trading, etc.

I dont play Vanilla anymore since it really doesn't have the breadth and depth of sand in the sandbox, but playing on an advanced server with a host of addons has what the OP has suggested already. DayZ Epoch is set in a future time after the Great Infection. Humanity is slowly returning to the wasteland, industrious survivors have begun to join together in small groups and rebuild society. Small camps of merchants have started to pop up to do business with survivors who collect goods from the wasted remnants of civilization. Wholesalers have landed on the shores offering imported goods to aid the rebuilding effort. Dynamic missions exist (Cargo Plane crash, Bandit Supply run to intercept, etc.) that the competitive and fortunate can accomplish, while infection still remain and rogue bandits still roam the countryside preying on unsuspecting survivors. Base-building, amonst other things, is one of the favorite features.

I don't go through steam at all anymore, so as mentioned before, depending on your access-route to servers, I too use DayZ Commander http://www.dayzcommander.com/

If there are no options on the scroll-wheel, try hitting space-bar to place, otherwise, something might be blocking it.

And depending on vanilla vs other mods, OP, some Admins, like on our Epoch server, do make it so that we have a very broad and deep range of mods & addons, but can also adjust the rarity and quantity of items so the play environment doesn't become too easy at all, but makes for a more long-term experience. So rarity and frequency will vary from server to server, especially factoriing the number of players on the server.

Play on a server that has decent randonly generated missions, and ammo becomes a non-issue. Period.

Its not lag, but zombie pathing. Zombies clip through walls and doors on every server, because the code isnt optimized, not to mention that zombies become sprinting maniacs as soon as they see you. its been this way since DayZ was available, and only the small dev team can address it.

Yea...we're still chilling on US186. Thanks to those of you that have submitted apps. If you want some safety with a mature group to play with that doesn't tolerate combat loggers, and who are active in game-play, look us up.

As mentioned. Be aware of where the buildings are that you can run into. Do that, then the zombies walk as they enter, and you can kill them or evade them more easily.
