I'm always the same character no matter what profile I chose. I thought this depends on the game copy.

Tell me your stupidest death stories...
Ken Bean replied to Matteh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I used to play on a private hive server which was a very friendly one, most were nice to each other, so I teamed up quite a lot. This worked pretty well for a few weeks, until a cheater went mad, broke everyone’s legs and somehow screwed up the server in a way no one was able to join after that. So I started on another server an still was in friendly mode. I ran into Cherno, found an alice pack, some water, food, a map and a hatchet and just was upon leaving as I saw that house I just wanted to check. Okay, I stood up, run to that house, turned around and chopped the horde of Zeds that was behind me. I crouched into the room to the right an saw this survivor dude looting a pile of merely half interesting gear. His back was turned to me, he couldn't see me. So I just stood a bit nearby a few seconds without thinking any bad. Then the guy turned around and immediately switched to panic mode. He started chopping me and my character started screaming and bleeding and I thought, “Shit, well, should I type sth friendly? Maybe running away? Aww, I don't lose any super rare gear. It doesn't really matter. I'm just at the start. As he is. He probably just stops chopping soon. Because he realizes, I don't do anything. Not defending myself. Not even stepping aside.”. This were the last thoughts of my character. He didn't stop, panic mode was stronger, I died. But I couldn't be really sad about it. I respawned once more in Cherno, this time on the other site of the town. I run to my dead cold body, which still was there, as I left it, completely unlooted. The survivor was gone. He already left the crime scene. I had the feeling that he was very sorry. Maybe he felt like he made a very bad decission. So I grabbed my stuff, left Cherno and this was the beginning of a 25 day life, until it ended driving my tractor against a hay roll because I was gaping out of the window on my left, instead of the direction I drove. -
I just have a different user name on each web site I sign up. Maybe I like to be a mysterious stranger? Maybe not. Anyway, names are different opportunities, aren't they?

Hero Skin Still Blurry (with BAF)
Ken Bean replied to Statik (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
If you have the Steam-Copy, start Steam as Admin, start all the Arma 2 entries, BAF or PMC will be activated. As long as they are not activated, the game uses the low res light versions. -
Some actually are female.
-
Probably maybe. The engine leads my personal weird bug hit list.

It's okay in single player games. Event though, I wouldn't recomment it blindly, since Cheater will most likely get used to it. A game should stay challenging. Anyway, sometimes it's plain fun to play a little around with the console and having fun with cheats. Some single player games can easily get screwed up by cheating, e.g. Fallout New Vegas, so you should have at least a clue what you are doing. I for my self use to play around from time to time. But most of the time I just need console commands to test a mod ingame. (That's what a console actually is made for. I also never continue a cheated game. I always save it before cheating around, close the game after I did and continue the uncheated save after. This has become a habit. I also cant stand mods where you just get a god mode like over powered weapon.) In multi player games, it is a no go in my opinion. Because of the impact to other player. It can be kind of trolling to ruin other peoples game and it's just plain unfair. (They also ruin the game for them selfes. Playing a game as it was ought to, is the more challenging and therefore rewarding way.) If you cheat an advantage in a single player game, no one cares. Online just is the very wrong place. Having dedicated cheater server, where everyone knows that cheats might be allowed, would be another thing.

Pay attention to the stickies in the trouble shooting forums. Edit Oh, your question has already been answered in that other thread.

Hey there, what TCP and UDP Ports do I need to open to allow DayZ and DayZ Commander for outgoing traffic? I'd need to know the ports as a client, not for a server. I already searched for the respective ports but just found server configurations. Thanks in advance.
-
Turning off the firewall is kind of the worst thing one can do. There's no real safety at all though, even with firewall. But I wouldn't let all my ports open. There are lots of people driving around an scanning networks for easy victims. I also don't like to have many programs calling home for whatever reason. This is the main reason why I set it so strict. Allowing all TCP and UDP ports for the Arma2OA.exe for outgoing traffic works and should be save enough though. I just started to define the ports. Yep, I'm aware that if someone really would want to brake in, probably would succeed anyway. But would you like to let your door open to anyone? Opportunity makes a thief.
-
Thanks for the reply. I'm using the Windows 8 default firewall which is configured to block every incoming or outgoing traffic as long it is not defined in a allowed rule. There's no router to configure since I'm online with an umts stick. (Yep, very high ping, but somehow works. ^^)

(SA) Military weapons are getting rarer, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be lots of guns to choose from.
Ken Bean replied to colekern's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm starting to wonder if I'm "hardcore" enough for the game. I see loads of threads where people request to make certain loot a lot more rare. In my opinion, this is not sth I want, since I once found a Bison-Gun and before I got used to it, I had to throw it away since I didn't found any ammo. So whats the point in making things "really rare"? Do you want to find a lot of throw away stuff? agreed I'd like to vote for more dfferent items. So that you have to use your brain, what you want to take with you and what not. A good mixture of rare and frequent items with a a very broad variety of different usage would be cool. Don't see me to enjoy finding empty tin cans only. -
Making those items really rare just increases their value. So finding an AS50 then would be even more a death sentence. Don't you find it on heli crash sites only anyway? They clearly are not that frequent. And then you'll have to consider that even if you found a heli crash site, you only have a low chance to find an AS50. Maybe this varies from server to server though, maybe you just got one which spawns those weapons a lot, but there shouldn't be much weapons like this in the game. If there are that many, then the reason probably is that every cheater wants to spawn with one. They are most likely not all 100% legit founds. ;) I found only one within two months on a heli crash site by the way and I imediately lost it since I thought it would be save in a tent, which was just a plain stupid idea.

DayZ StandAlone Wallpaper 1920x1080
Ken Bean replied to ProfessorShanks (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
Whats up with that? Have there been manipulated images? -
Good point. I don't think they are going to implement it as a radio though. Well, lets see.
-
The idea is good, but this probably is not going to happen since most music out there is copy righted. You'd need to pay collecting societies like the GEMA (it's a german organization but other countries have similar as well. maybe not as greedy once though) if you power the server and play their music. Yes, that's odd, but unfortunately this is how it works.
-
Certain? Since mine got destroyed as I tried to place it in a rock. But not immediately though.
-
In my experience there is no way to really store your gear. I may play for round about two months and already lost at least 5 tents because the respective servers went down. I also lost loads of stuff because of disappearing, like putting a weapon to the ground, which just happen to vanish 2 seconds later. Twice I also lost the entire content of a filled tent because it flattened. One time I accidentally came too close with my bike (it was just a matter of a few cm) and the other time the tent was just a bit misplaced into a rock, which obviously caused the tent to be destroyed a few days later. Not to mention that I had a horrible accident with my tractor and a hay bale. The detonation cost my life and the entire storage. So in order to keep something save, I don't know what to do. ^^ But I would appreciate it if in the stand alone would care more about your gear.

DE 853 official hive server hosted by BoeseAlteMaenner
Ken Bean posted a topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
On Saturday 13th April 17:05 MEZ (= UTC+1) On this server hosted by BoeseAlteMaenner, IP 85.114.153.150:10600 I got spawn killed on an empty world space by hacker. They port you to a certain spot, waiting for you. Its a hive server and I lost lots of nice gear. Even a NVG and a GPS. These folks were on the server: http://www.loaditup...._t88bgknhvn.png I joined again and they killed me a second time, but now I have video proof. :-) Edit Just to make perfect assholes out of them selfes, they even hid all bodies, so all the stuff they couln't take with them is lost. Edit2 They probably work in a team of 3. Andy may lurk in the lobby if someone is joining the game and Hunk305 und Eddy305 may take them out. This is just a guess, I don't know who shot me. -

The same happened on DE 1008 IP: 85.114.153.27:10600 Looks exactly the same. I don't get it, it's just way too lame. They ruin other peoples game and of cause their own as well. Maybe it would be a good turn, to make bodies unlootable for everyone but his legit spiritual owner. Yep, that's lame but not as half as lame as being killed by cheater/hacker/scriptkiddies. -

Ken Bean replied to Ken Bean's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Here's a snipped of the Video: Sorry for sound and video issues. @e47 Yep, seems to be pretty similar. Currently there are some joining who just get shot. Others seems to survive. So my guess is, they gear up. One is lurking, two are shooting survivor and some, who belong to the gang, successfully spawn there, don't get shot, and equip themselves. They kind of "farm" the player. -
Hi folks, several installation gides out there most of the time suggest to install the latest beta patch from here: http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php If I do so, my DayZ install usually is labeled to be "out of date" in DayZ Commander even though my version number is at least 2 versions higher than said to be required there or than the versions which are running on servers. So I'd like to know your opinion. Is it save to update to the latest beta patch (103419) or should I stick with the most common used build, which is 102591 at the moment? Thanks and best regards, sincerely with best wishes, yours truly Ken Bean

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I wanted to know.

Mine are low as well. Not sure if this is very unusual. Probably not. Your specs look pretty okay to me. Maybe your RAM is a little low clocked and your graphics card is an older one. Your core i5 should be good (4 Cores, 4 Threads, turbo up to 3,2 GHz) but the cpu takes DDR3-1066/1333 RAM. I'd go for 1333 MHz or higher. Even though, higher frequencies are not used by the cpu. With 665MHz you are definitively wasting speed. Someone else may tell you more. You also can have a look here, if you want: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com Edit Their optimum recommendation is CPU: Intel Core i5 or AMD Athlon Phenom X4 or faster RAM: 2 GB OS: Windows 7 Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 or ATI Radeon HD 5770 or faster with Shader Model 3 and 896 MB VRAM DirectX version: DirectX 9.0c Free Disk Space: 20 GB So, you are in. But consider to get a faster RAM. Maybe it's just a Bios setting? I didn't find any information regarding the motherboard. So I don't know what RAM frequencies it supports...
