  1. Then let them cheat or hack! They won't have access to the hive anyway. And as already said, they could get the server files already, right now! Do you even know how the hive or servers in general work?
  2. In my scenario, there would be no need to police applicants. Private servers should still not be able to access the central hive, because that's where Rocket does his development and tests. Adding a local database would enable another set of useful possibilities, though. - better performance due to less hive load and also much faster access to the local DB (if done right - see edonovan's post) - private servers for: people just playing their way / people that really want to contribute to the project Furthermore, the serverfiles are already circulating around the interwebs and everyone not too stupid can get a hold of them. Anyone who want's to have his own server can do so already. Is that legal? Not so, but that's not going to stop "every tom". Going open and creating two sets of hive files could solve that. One for local DB access only, the other for full hive (and maybe local DB?) access. That'll at least stop "every tom" from using the to-be-kept-secret server files.
  3. And that's exactly where your performance problems originate. Hundreds of servers - thousands of players - millions of queries per second. Updating the character table every time a player moved a few meters? This just begs to crush performance. You know why i know. Maybe it would be time to be a little more open minded. Pulling a one-man show might feel nice, but going semi-open might actually help the project. I could tell you so much about what i've found out working with the little gem you built. //edit One idea i had was to give every server it's own temporary local DB. Protect it as you wish. Only upon player disconnect, you relocate the data to your central DB (now that's a hive!) and clear the temporary DB of all according player data. The next server the same player connects to fetches his data from the central hive and also stores it temporarily. You'd only have to solve the possible race conditions that might occur by players switching servers very fast. Yes, i actually worked with it instead of just playing or trying to pull a con/scam/ip fraud or whatever you like to call it. That's my understanding of a public test version. I surely could help, but thanks to your damn policy i can't and won't.

    Script kicks

I've had this happen to me on my own, regular ArmA2 OA server, too. Joined the session to test settings and got kicked for the same reason. I do not know if BE got an update lately - can't remember the version number :/
  5. Just like you guys asked for permission to participate in the alpha test before downloading the mod? Oh wait, you didn't, because it is fkin public! If you want to keep something under, let's say, NDA, then you have to tell the people! Don't just assume they know.
  6. The whole discussion about EULAs and so on only came up, because none of us really know what we're allowed to do and what's better left untouched. I'm going to be honest with you right now: As a matter of fact i am hosting a DayZ server. Not hive connected, but utilizing a local database that i made all by myself. I did that, because all the rules that can be found on the forum only address requirements for official servers. There is no explicit word on not being allowed to host a server on your own and even the required files are publicly available. I did not crack or reverse engineer anything. All files are unaltered and in their original state. So i went ahead and created the server to have a place for me and my friends to play, without having to go though the hour long pain of finding a non glitching, desyncing, slow server. It is even public so that every other player gets the benefit and I inform them in the MOTD about it not being an official server. Now to the point: I'll be willingly taking it offline if you tell me to do so. Just one word, and away it goes. If this happens everyone else will know that private non-hive servers are not welcome.

    kronzky SP conversion

@rocket I'd really like to have a talk with you about non-hive servers. I'm pretty sure though, you won't be answering any posts on this subject. If i'm wrong, PM me. I really might be able to contribute to the project.

    kronzky SP conversion

I fully understand why they asked him to take his conversion offline. The mod itself is not his own creation, so he has no right to modify or distribute it. What i'm asking myself right now: is hosting a non-dev-approved server also "illegal"? The mod itself is downloadable as we all know. Even the server files can be found all over the place and are stored on unsecured, public webspace (google anyone?). There is, or was, even a thread on this board that linked directly to those files. All one would be missing is the database, but even that can be replicated in a matter of hours. So please, put up a EULA and tighten your security if you do not want anyone apart from approved hosts on your team. Going after your customers that might have recently bought ArmA2 just for playing DayZ would be foul. Even more, if playing on "official" servers is near to impossible at the moment.
  9. Taking that into mind, i have to say that you are absolutely right. Getting blacklisted for fking up the time is a real dealbreaker.
  10. Yeah, might. Which noone knows until having tried it.
  11. I have found a nice little tool that might come in handy for all you serveradmins/-hosters. http://xxxxxxx I have especially those admins in mind, that are running more than one server instance and maybe want every single one to have a different day/night cycle. EDIT: Link be gone for good

    Debug Monitor [HELP]

Graphic options: reduce the GUI size to "very small" and restart the game. That'll fix it Moving or disabling is impossible as to now though
