So I don't know about anyone else here, but I'm pretty confident that I can step off a height of five feet and land without collapsing in a heap and falling unconcious. I understand the dynamic of the damage system in use, but really, either it needs to be improved or things such as fall damage need to be reassessed.

I keep myself going with objectives. First objective was to reach Olsha where my brother was living before the outbreak. I'm not there yet and it's been keeping me busy along the route. I'm living like a survivor, following the treeline and staying away from roads but going into villages and towns when neccessary. Ideally, I want to find someone that's willing to play the role of my brother and we can organise it between ourselves for him to be there when I arrive. From there, we're going to head to the coast and try to find a boat to escape to an island, but chances of finding a boat? So from there we'll be looking to head back inland to set up a camp somewhere. Make your own objectives and don't play Day Z. Live it.

I've only been at Day Z for a week now, but already I've sussed out this game. You want to move into a town and ransack it for loot? You better be prepared to sit and watch that town for twenty minutes or more to make sure there isn't someone already in there hiding or waiting to pounce. You want to move to the next village? Get the map out, plot a route that makes good use of the ground and natural cover and take an obscure approach. Stop to check your rear for signs of being tailed. You want to go into a building that you're not 100% happy is deserted? Throw a grenade in, distract the enemy or panic him into breaking out. If I do anything in this game that takes me less than five minutes to do, I fully expect to die as a result of my tardy actions. I've so far managed to play for six hours and I'm only at Starry, having gone directly north from the beach and visiting the western most villages on route. My kit is pretty basic but I have a crossbow and two bolts which I put to good, silent use. My objective? Reach Oshla, I think it's called. This isn't a game about gear, or about deathmatch or about killing other players. This is a game about surviving.

How do you class that as a legitimate log off? He logged off having been shot and as he said himself, possibly deprived someone of a kill. If you are going to log off, you need to ask yourself this: "Am I logging off because of a sudden occurrence in Day Z which has adversely affected my character? Would I still be playing if this hadn't occurred? Am I adhereing to the spirit of the game?" Although the OP is obviously a good guy, his log-off wasn't legitimate in that sense. -

I was about to let rip at your log-off attitude, but actually, you redeemed yourself well there and I applaud your integrity. Well done. Another few hundred more like you and this game would be a lot better. -
I look at it like this: When I started playing DayZ it was because I thought I was going to enter a world of survival-horror based around so many of my favourite zombie films, where I'd be sitting in a cold sweat with a trickle of wee running down my leg as I tried to survive. I got that feeling, but it lasted all of a couple of days before I switched on to how easy it is to survive. The only time I've papped myself since was when I turned a corner and found myself staring into the eyes of a zombie. More zombies spread out over the map and not just in the cities, with better reactions and greater line-of-sight detection would make the game harder and encourage more teaming up. The only reason there is such a rampant bandit issue is because you can survive on your own. Once that possibility is removed, then you're going to need to be friendly to live.

So it's definitely an issue, nay problem, that no-one can deny. I cannot think of any other game where you can move between servers and alter your position on one to benefit you in another. I actually can't. Anyone? So it is a bad idea. We've seen the problems it can cause both in your own perceived safety (Inside a building you've got secured, etc) and in PvP outings against more than one person where one hops server, changes position to your location and hops back to take you in the rear (arfarf), not to mention the equipment farming going on. The only current argument for having server hopping exist is because of the flux of some servers - it's good to know you can go to any server if your 'home' one is down or struggling. Ideally, it's a feature that needs to be removed, or at the very least, restricted to one hop a day. Thoughts, comments?

Tonic, how do you plan on alerting forum members of the security breach?

That's a well-made point OP. If there has been a security breach and the first reaction was to shut-down the Forum and rollback, you've lost the emails of those people that joined since the last backup and you've lost the means to inform them. Sure, you can make a post on the Forum and website, but what happens if you're away with other commitments / don't check the website that often? You've now got a compromised account which whilst no longer in existence here at DayZ, could be used to gain access elsewhere if you have poor password standards. Partial blame on you for having poor password standards, majority blame on the Day Z website admin for not approaching the breach in a mature and thought out manner. I saw the message put up whilst the Forum was down - very childish. -

There also needs to be more spawn points around the map and away from coastal areas. Why are we all spawning on the beaches? What's the story behind it? What's the point behind it? Why aren't we starting in a house, our house, with nothing but what we have in our house, setting off to find out what the hell is going on? Yes, it is an Alpha, but at the same time, there are some basic things which could have been implemented better to reduce a lot of problems and hopefully will be as development goes on. The first thing they need to do in my opinion is get a grip of this website and forum. That's something that can easily be fixed. -
Side chat is disabled in the new updates. The plans are to have you use Voice chat at 80m and Direct comms at 20m. If people weren't such dicks, they would say that instead of laughing.

I've only been playing DayZ for a day or two, so yes, very much a 'noob', however we all were once. The one thing I've realised pretty quickly is that the sandbox style means that unless you're happy just surviving, it's going to get flat pretty quickly on your own and I will be on my own because of work and the limited time I get to play. So thinking back over all the survival books and films I've ever enjoyed, I've started fresh with a new objective. My brother lives in Olsha. Have they survived? I've no idea. I need to get back there to find out. (I've started in Kamenka). I've got to go cross-country, the beaches are too dangerous from what I've seen and heard already. It's going to be a hard journey, I just hope they've managed to hold out....... Day Z - How do you play yours?

Funnily enough, the game isn't really about 'zombie survival'. It's just about 'survival'. If you look at the Walking Dead series, zombies are just a side-part of that compared to the human drama. This catches it quite well. You may get fed up with various connection issues and whatnot, but the game itself is great. I do recommend finding a friend though. I'm on my lonesome and it gets a bit, well, lonely.
