    Which is better?

I agree about the crowbar. I was happy as hell when I found on and went to try it out on the next Zed. WTF...the range felt shorter than even the fists - I had do basically kiss that damn Undead before my whacks touched it...and then it did as much as hitting it with fists: Crack it over his had...he falls....and gets up again...and again...and again. Meh. So, in short: Crowbar = useless at the moment.

    Infection killing you?

Really strange: I got infected by drinking unboiled water on the weekend. Allright, could be worse, so I walked coughing and with 6k blood through the world. But then I logged in yesterday again - and right from the start my blood was in the red, so maybe only one quarter left...and it kept dropping to the point where my vision got blurry and I heard my heart beat and started shaking. And no, I was not bleeding. So I wolfed down two cooked steaks, three cans of beans, a box of painkillers and bandaged me, useless or not. Well, allright, the vision got clear again, and the blood went halfway up again....but then it started dropping again to about 1/4 of the full gauge....so I logged out before dropping dead in the wilderness for unknown reasons. Anyone an idea why this happened? Bug? Or did I miss something that can kill you without you even noticing? Or did they increase the symptoms of infection over night from "pain in the ass" to "Ha-ha, I kill you"?

    Infection killing you?

Yes, I know it SHOULD stop at 6k....but apparently it doesn't....anyone else notice this? And about antibiotics...I spent half the weekend going through all residentials and hospitals - apparently it is easier to find aliens... BTW: Public servers (changing servers does NOT heal you), not private ones.

    improved hunger and thirst SA

Too complicated, if you ask me. Sure, dropping dead immediately after 60 minutes without food or water is ridiculous But on the other hand, running through the woods for hours without some nourishment should be punished in some way, maybe reduced strength with melee weapons, reduced movement speed or shaking while aiming. So, the issue of not eating or drinking enough can be addressed in a somewhat easy and half-realistic way without the need of a complicated nutrition system.

Any tips for new players ?

Start on servers with low population. For a newbie, the Zeds are enough to handle....no need to encounter other players. I know because, I'm doing it exactly the same way now, and am still alive after 12 hours of play (and six of those with an infection from an unboiled water bottle...duh...). Furthermore: For raiding towns, I found servers where it is mooinlit night much easier than in broad daylight - Zeds can't see sh** at night.
  6. Hi there - I just got two newbie questions about spawning of Zeds and loot piles: 1.) Are Zombies spawning near the player at an increased rate when he is near points of interest? Let me explain: I was checking out the fire station at the factory north of Elektro. From afar I only saw one Zed lurking about. Fine, so I snuck by him and collected all there was in the fire station (only crap again...) I also went up the tower for the loot there and looked out of the windows. HOLY CRAP! There was almost a dozen Zombies converging on the fire station from all directions! So, after grabbing all the junk there, I barely fled into the hills with a full train of Zeds behind me... Where the hell did they all come from? 2.) Do loot piles in buildings re-spawn? And how long does it take? So, could I have stayed in the fire station for some time and collected some (hopefully better) stuff again? Or does an area have to be empty? Thanks!

Spawning of Zombies and loot piles

Ah, allright, thanks...by searching for "farming" I came to this: So just holing up in a place won't help. But with that huge hoard spawning around, leaving for 2 minutes and 50 meters will be difficult...
  9. I didn't go through 400+ pages, so I just spill my guts: Why are there not more melee weapons, especially improvised ones? I mean: Before I get eaten alive because I have nothing more than my fists, I'd pick up a rock, a piece of scrap metal or I would even tear a board off a wooden fence to defend against the occasional zombie in real life. Sure, a piece of wood is nothing compared to a sharp hatchet, but it COULD keep you alive in a tight spot. And if that is not possible, why not give the zombie a good kick or a solid swing - hell, THEY use their bare hands on you, so why can't we? No one asks for Mike-Tyson-punches that gib the Z at the first hit, but inflicting SOME damage you are not completely helpless would be more realistic and less frustrating.
  10. Sorry if this may sound stupid, but: I started out on DayZ only a couple of days ago, but this one seriously troubles me, and I'd love to know if it is just my bad luck or common: My usual cause of death is Bleeding. Spawning freshly, having no weapon and by mistake alerting a zombie and not being able to loose him - or being suprised while lying prone, you get attacked. Happens, all right - is it just my bad luck or is the chance for catching a bleeding right from the first attack somewhere between 50 and 80%? It happened like that in my last dozen lifes - one swipe and I'm bleeding. And with only one bandage, the second attack (after running away from the first) is usually fatal. So, is it only me or is bleeding (and bleeding to death? I thought, bleeding stops at 2000 blood?) way too "powerfull" (catching a bleeding and not being able to stop it) and the main aspect of killing new players who haven't been able to loot a hospital etc.?

    Usual cause of death: Bleeding

Thanks for your replies so far, though I knew most of it already because I dug through several Beginners Guides before even logging in the first time. But reading and being able to follow the hints are two pair of shoes. I don't know, maybe the server I play on is bugged, but in the 10 hours I played now, I haven't found a single bandage (next to the one you start with), or a single morphine injector and not a single firearm. All I found so far was a hatchet (and that thing misses most of the times despite the zombie hitting you), some soda cans, some ammo, and a lot of trash like toilet paper and razors - but that's it - and I went through many buildings in Elektro as well (empty server, only me one or two other friendly players) - nothing usefull, and neither on the zombies I killed with the hatchet. Apparently, I really have bad luck in the game. :(
