.380 ACP Coming To DayZ! [Torchia Reddit]
Chaingunfighter replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
Probably, in a realistic scenario you wouldn't even find M4A1s. They do exist everywhere and they're certainly acceptable for the game, but the chances of actually finding one would be slim . And you're right, from a realism standpoint you'd probably (and I say this with caution) be better off with 5.45x39mm, but from a gameplay standpoint you can do much, much more with 7.62x51mm. (Assuming you still want guns that fire the correct calibers) There are plenty of 5.45x39 equivalents in 5.56 or 7.62x39, but you'd be much more hard pressed to find a 5.56 M60, or M14, or FN FAL, or G3, or M240, or HK-417, or PSG-1, or whatever. (Yes, I know there are some things like the Ruger Mini-14 for an M14 and SA-58 Compact for an FN FAL, but they're far different from their respective guns than per say an AK-101 from an AK-74M) -

Not necessarily what I'm saying, but I'm just trying to point out that there's no need for 5.45x39mm in order to have the same kinds of guns. I mean, an AK-102 isn't a western gun, but it still uses 5.56x45mm. I wouldn't be opposed to having that in-game as a high-end AK. Or they could do the AK-104, which is 7.62x39mm. Still an eastern weapon, just not firing 5.45x39mm. My point is that we don't need 5.45x39mm to have intermediate-cartridge rifles & light machine guns, because there are equivalents in other calibers. -

It's hardly used in any civilian weapons in general. There are a few civilian guns, like the SSG-82 and a couple of AR-15 variants, but most of them are military weapons. Even then, it's heavily limited; AK-74 series, AN-94 & AK-12, RPK-74 series, and the TAR-21. TAR-21s exist in 5.56x45mm, most AK-74 variants have 5.56x45mm or 7.62x39mm equivalents, as do RPKs, and the AN-94/AK-12 are not something we really need in DayZ (they aren't even that popular in Russia.) -

He wasn't responding directly to you, as far as I'm aware. There are direct quotations for that, as you know. wrong. It's common knowledge that there are a good number of people on the forums who would love to have every caliber imaginable, but the devs have already said that they're not going to do that. So now we are trying to make compromises so we can still get some semblance of what we'd like to be in the game. Fighting back and just yelling: "NO 545x39 SHOULD BE IN THE GAME" isn't going to further our argument at this point. Maybe at a future time they'll reconsider, but it's not worth it to try and assume so. -

Design the bullet off of that 7.62x54mmR, and do what Katana67 suggested; call it "Rimmed", or something like that. If people are still getting confused at that point, all of the blame goes on them. It'd be pretty easy to differentiate, unlike something around "9x19mm" and "9x18mm", which look the same if you don't look close enough or read over it too quickly. Edit: Apparently the forum decided to post this as another post instead of adding it as an edit to my previous post.... Ugh. Honestly, I think we can live without 5.45x39mm. It's somewhat difficult to suggest not adding the AK-74M, especially considering they already made a model for it and everything, but it definitely would not be necessary. For the sake of limiting calibers, it's probably something that isn't needed. There aren't a whole lot of 5.45x39mm guns (it's hardly used in any civilian weapons), and almost every 5.45x39mm gun has a variant in 7.62x39mm. AKS-74U? AKMSU. AK-74M? AK-103/104. RPK-74? RPK-47 and RPD. If you really wanted to get into the semantics of things, you could simply Add wooden furniture attachments to an AK-100 rifle. There, now you have your AK-74. -

To separate them, they could re-color the 7.62x54mmR ammunition to a bronze/brass mixed color while leaving the 7.62x39mm as the steel-gray casing and 7.62x51mm as the pure-brass color. -

Or relatively useless modularity. I'm not opposed to them making it so you can add folding stocks & different receivers so long as they don't give you a super advantage. Adding things like Eotechs, laser pointers, flashlights, foregrips, and all that jazz should probably be left to high-tiered weapons. The GP-25 should work fine with the base AKM & AK-74, though, because it's probably going to be rare enough itself. While we're on topic (and also to take this discussion slightly elsewhere), I wouldn't be opposed to seeing one of these babies spawn as like 1% of all AKMs or something, as an easter egg; These things, as dumb (and badass) as they are, are much more common than I'd like to believe. Half of the pictures I've ever seen of weapons confiscated from Iraq and Afghanistan have a few gold (or just shiny metallic-plated) AKs in them. I don't want any of the "spray-painted gold camo" shit that's done in most video games, just have it be one of those odd but cool rarities, like the Engraved 1911. -

A modernized AK variant wouldn't bother me so much. That's really not that extreme based on what you see today, although I'd rather see a production-run modern AK rather than one made up of attachments on the shell of an old rifle. Having an AK-104 and AK-107 wouldn't kill me so much as long as they were rare, that way people could have a way to use their spare 5.45x39mm or 7.62x39mm ammo alongside the western optics, but they'd have to do some extra looking. -

Chaingunfighter replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I'll admit that the attachments are a bit too common at the moment, but I see nothing wrong with having the railed handguard for the AKM. I mean, they do exist, and a lot of militaries employ them nowadays, because most people now realize how effective optics are on a weapon. The AKM is nowhere close to the M4A1 on modularity, the only advantage having the rails do is letting you put a flashlight and bipod on it. And it's not like all of that is available to the AK right off the bat, you need to find the special parts for it. The M4A1 can accept almost all of its attachments right out of the box. I'd definitely call the SKS basic in terms of attachments. The bayonet is just removed to give something for people to look for. The PU scope isn't compatible with your run of the mill SKS without special modification, but it can be done, much easier than adding the LRS to the mosin can. It's honestly not that bad. -

Well, that's what I was trying to say (I'm not very good with words when I'm trying to type something up quickly, as I edit my posts frequently). 7.62x51mm could be reserved completely for the generally high-performance military weapons while 7.62x54mmR would tend to be set for lower-end weapons. Most of the game's battle rifles, DMRs, sniper rifles, and GPMGs would be limited to 7.62x51mm. You could have stuff like the SVT-40, SVD, and PKM, but I doubt the SVT-40 would stand up well to an FN FAL, the SVD an M21, or a PKM and M240. Also, unlike the Mosin, these guns still require magazines, so there's nothing wrong with having them be the few oddballs that aren't in strictly military calibers. -

If they wanted to do an M16A2 I'd honestly prefer they do the M16A4. That way we'd have multiple uses for most of the dedicated M4A1 parts, except for the handguards. Part of me also wants them to just do an M16A1 or M16A2 so that we don't have MAGPUL M16s everywhere. I guess they could just do an M16A1 < M16A4 & M4A1 system. M4A1 & M16A4 are rare, and have their distinctive advantages (M4A1 is great for CQB and has the most customization, while the M16A4 is still pretty customizable, more accurate, and fires in bursts), and the M16A1 is somewhat common, but comparably inaccurate and unreliable (not hollywood-style reliable, though) I can stand by an RK-95, but I don't really see the point of an AK-74P when you have an AK-74M coming. It's essentially just two different kinds of polymer AKs. Granted, if they make the handguards & stocks interchangeable, then they can have both variations, but I'd want wood first, because I want my classic AKS-74 paratrooper rifle. M4A1 and M249 (M4 especially) are used so much because they're staple U.S. military guns, and most modern shooters are built around the US military in some way. Nothing really wrong with that, as most FPS games are made in the US anyway. And even the ones that aren't still usually feature it just because of how iconic it is. -

I'm not saying I like the fact that we have to make a choice, but I just don't see the reasoning for limiting 5.56x45mm over 7.62x51mm. 7.62x54mmR isn't supposed to be distinctly civilian, but 7.62x51mm is supposed to be distinctly military. The functionality of most NATO assault rifles is the same. G36, L85, M4A1, M16, you name it. They're all going to perform essentially the same. There are plenty of obvious differences, but in the end it's not game changing (a soldier with a G36 will probably do just as fine with an M4A1 assuming equal levels of training) That's why I feel that 5.56x45mm can be the more mixed cartridge than 7.62x51mm, because you're not losing out on as much by doing so. I wouldn't complain about them moving the CZ-527 to 7.62x39mm, though, because there is even less differentiation in 7.62x39mm firearms, and there are other applicable 5.56x45mm civilian rifles. -

They haven't actually confirmed it, but they probably will make it given their statements. But If you're hoping for some super powerful end-game pistol, the Makarov is not what you're looking for. It's 8 round capacity (not sure about the .380 variant), super compact and low stopping power. However, it's a very reliable handgun, so if that ever becomes an important factor, the Makarov will be a pretty good choice. It's what the pistol you used to start out with in the mod was, although it hopefully won't be as horrible (it took 3 magazines before to kill someone, but that was because of the bad blood system). I'd definitely take an FNX-45 over a Makarov any day, ammunition issues aside. But once the game starts to become balanced after the weapons list is expanded upon more and the game is in its later stages, the FNX-45 and .45 ammo in general will most likely be very limited. You'll have to rely on guns like the Makarov more often. Shotguns could use some work, I'll admit, but we're getting a pump-action MP-133 soon and there will probably be that Remington 870 they showed off a while ago at some point. -

The TAR-21 isn't actually that bad of a weapon, it's found in quite a few places. In fact, it's actually used by Ukraine, Georgia, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, all of which are relatively close to where Chernarus would be situated. I'd rather see an M16A1/A2 and Galil first, as they're much more widespread, but it's not the worst weapon to have (it also uses STANAG magazines, unlike the Galil and AUG, which are my other two top contenders for a non-AR 5.56x45mm assault rifle) -

I really hope they do 7.62x54mmR at some point. It would make a good way to separate the majority of "civilian/former military weapons" from the essentially exclusive military calibers. Obviously some inevitable discrepancies will occur, like the SVD & PKM, but most of the 7.62x54mmR guns could be civilian type (like the Mosin & SVT-40). That way, you could make 7.62x51mm an essentially dedicated military cartridge. The LongHorn would have to be changed, but no .308 Contenders exist anyway, so there's no real problem in doing that. And you wouldn't suffer any problems by doing so. An M700 could either be changed to 5.56x45mm or simply be added as an M24. You could have the M14, FN FAL, G3A3, SR-25, M60, M240, and everything you wanted! 5.56x45mm is where problems might arise, but there's much less overall variation in .223 types of guns than .308 guns. You'd really be going from a few bolt-action/semi-automatic rifles and assault rifles to an M249, whereas 7.62x51mm would be going from a break-action pistol, to bolt-action rifles, to semi-automatic battle rifles, to sniper rifles, to general purpose machine guns of both western and eastern types. -

Yeah, I'm aware that 7.62x51mm isn't an intermediate round, but a lot of guns like the G3A3 or FN FAL, which have select-fire capability, have been or still are used in the same roles as intermediate cartridge-based rifles like the AKM or M4A1. It was also worth mentioning because it's already in-game, unlike some other ammunition. Sorry for the bit of confusion. I actually hope we can get .44 Magnum so that we have some truly powerful sidearms besides the LongHorn, but I don't know how people would feel about it. But the real question is; how would you feel if they added a Sig Sauer P226 and gave it .357 Magnum instead of .357 SIG? Forget that, I dumbed out for a second and forgot that the P226 is also a 9x19mm pistol. Oops. Yeah, and then if they wanted, the Greasegun and MAC-10 could be the other two .45 ACP SMGs you could find. The Greasegun would be manageable, but fire incredibly slowly, and be questionably reliable. The MAC-10, on the other hand, is going to shoot very fast, but also spray everywhere (alongside awful recoil). I say that as though I want them to tier weapons, though; I don't. I'm fine with as many weapons as the devs want to have so long as they aren't completely game breaking (like an M202 FLASH) or are super out of place (like an XM8) -

All of the weapons are exciting. I can't really explain it, but it's just so satisfying knowing that there'll be some guns in the game and you'll be able to find them. Also, I'd count on guns like the P1 being of the more common guns later on. There's no real point in adding something like an M2HB, DShK, or NSV at this point, as we have no vehicles to mount them on. We might get tripods that we can carry around and set up, but that's still a long way off if it ever happens. If you're talking about things like a PKM or M60, then yes, I agree, we should get some. But they won't be (and shouldn't be) added until loot centralization occurs, so that they can be regulated and you won't be seeing Rambo everywhere. -

Chaingunfighter replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
Well, they're probably going to do the .380 Makarov variant anyway, but I don't see why having multiple similar pistols is going to do any harm. It doesn't really bother me so much that they're choosing a less common variant that does exist. I mean, you'd probably find more P-38s than P-1s, but they're essentially the same thing so I'm not complaining. It would just irk me more if they made the Makarov a 9x19mm variant, I would have a problem with that. I'd say we have assault rifle calibers pretty well covered. 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, and 7.62x51mm are what you typically see. The only other ones I can think of off the top of my head are 7.97x33mm, but that's only used in the StG-44, and 6.5mm. Something like .30-06, .243, or .300 WM as a dedicated hunting cartridge would be nice, though. I'd also like .338 for the "high-caliber sniper rifle" ammunition type, as I wouldn't have anything against an AWM or AWP (nor do I really care if they do an M107, but they show no interest in doing so). There are probably a plethora of reasons as to why they chose .380 ACP over 9x18mm. Most 9x18mm guns have variants in .380 ACP, but there are plenty more guns that utilize .380 than 9x18mm, and more types too (9x18mm only exists in handguns and submachine-guns, while .380 is a little more diverse) 9x18mm is also pretty close to 9x19mm in many aspects, while .380 ACP is pretty distinguishable (the ballistic data between 9x18 and 9x19 are fairly different, but the names are super close) I guess the UMP-45 wouldn't be too bad, but it'd have to be one of the more high-end weapons, which I could actually support. The fact that it easily accepts many attachments and is a powerful and good design would make it a great "end-game SMG" to have, considering calibers already in-game. It's also reasonably well-used around now, as many of the people wanted .40 or .45 caliber variants of the MP5 used this instead after they found that the MP5/10 and MP5/40 were horrible. I could also go for an FN P90 because of how unique 5.7x28mm is as a caliber, but it's hardly used in any weapons, so forget that. My true end-game weapon would be a Kriss Vector, but people would flip if the devs added that and I have no real argument for it, other than; "Dude, it's cool". -

Chaingunfighter replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
What's with the "confirmed?" bit? "we're adding .380 auto" seems pretty concise to me. It's honestly a fine compromise to me because we can still get the Makarov and pretty much any other 9x18mm firearm, as well as the iconic Vz64 Skorpion and Walther PPK :) (James Bond all the way) I'd rather see the MAC-10 than the MAC-11, though, as there aren't a whole lot of .45 SMGs that would be fun to have (A UMP-45? No thanks. I could settle for a Greasegun, but the superspeed MAC-10 is something worth having) Still, if they wanted to expand on the .380 bit, they could do both, but I think the Micro Uzi would be a better choice for a sub-compact SMG. Something I really want to see is the CZ-83, I think that would be an awesome handgun to have. Fits the setting & lore (because some CZ weapons [or CZ copies] are Chernarussian in the DayZ timeline) and balances out the small size of the Makarov with the large scale of most normal pistols. -
"no-one else uses the Galil" It's another one of those weapons like the G3A3 and FN FAL that shows up occasionally in guerrilla arms and combat alongside the countless AK variants. Not to the same extent as the former two, but you're more likely to see it than quite a lot of other guns.
-
Germany hardly uses the G3 anymore, and when they do, its mainly as a second line weapon. You'd be more likely to find it in the bases and camps scattered around, which is probably what it should do if they add it. The M1014 is not exclusive, either, being used by the US, UK, and by quite a few others (The 'actual' M1014 is only used by the U.S., everywhere else uses the Benelli M4 Super 90 designation) Also, you'd be unlikely to find multinational weapons in one helicopters, typically UN groups from one country stick together. You probably wouldn't find L85s in a German UN helicopter, for instance. SG-552 and AUG would be cool, but I think a Galil and M16A2/A1/A4 would make more sense. Not saying you couldn't have all of them, but there'd be no point in having 5 different 5.56x45mm rifles that performed essentially the same. I'd say keep the AUG, Galil, and M16, and scrap the L85 and SG-552.
-
It's definitely unconventional, but Bohemia's always worked that way, to an extent. The reasoning behind engine focus is so they can allow a greater amount of and depth to mechanics. I mean, they really didn't need to make the standalone on a new engine if they were just going to add new features. Yeah, they've been focusing on building the engine up, but that's so many of the future elements work well. Working physics and ragdoll simulation, pathfinding, 64bit servers, and all of the optimization they've been doing are necessary for enhanced systems and newer things like vehicles or AI. Again, it's not the conventional model, but to deny the progress they've made because they didn't do it as it's usually done isn't a fair statement. Keep in mind that the "play the game in alpha stages" is also a relatively new model of gaming, so you're getting feedback during the major development stages in addition to the game release. It's going to heavily influence your development schedule. That's why we're getting things like Cowboy Hats or MP5Ks in between updates, because they already have the full staff at work. I'm not saying I support this kind of development layout, but they've made fairly good progress with it thus far, even if it is in engine achievements rather than mechanic achievements, so it's not worth worrying about.
-
It's a generalized assessment, it doesn't mean that the devs aren't allowed to fix smaller bugs when they get the chance to. Killing on sight isn't exploiting or an issue with the game, it's a "problem" (not really) with the mentality of players, so you can't really make a plan for dealing with something that's always going to be there. Server hopping & ghosting are exploits, but you're assuming that these side effects were anticipated right from the get go. Remember that the mod didn't have a lot of public hive servers around, so hopping to another server to get loot would put you right back at square one, most of the time. That, and loot was much more abundant and less in depth in the mod, so it wasn't really necessary. Ghosting is another issue altogether, but they've brought forth some ways of trying to solve it. It's not perfect, but they've done a good job of making sure that people who try to ghost or combat log can't do so with absolute simplicity but people who are legitimately logging in or out aren't punished. You've also got to understand that rocket isn't exactly the "over-confident" kind of developer that you tend to see. He's an awesome guy and he's got awesome ideas, but he doesn't try to put them forth in the same ways that other people do. When relating to features, you've also got to remember that they want to support modding in the long run, so they have to make decisions on what should be a base game feature and what could probably wait until someone else makes it themselves. Progress has been good in the 6 month span the standalone has been out.

They make longer barrels for the higher caliber variants, but I guess if you wanted to, you could choose the smallest barrel.
