The exact spot where Pobeda was is now occupied by a sector of Novodmitrovosk, so I doubt we'll see it reinstated there, but hopefully in some other location we can have it. There are very few bodies of water left, and unlike new towns or cities, they can put the dam in the middle of the wilderness without urbanizing it, something the devs have done a bit too much of, I may add. (I love the new towns & whatnot, I just wish they didn't have to be at the expense of so much wilderness. Here's to hoping they find a way to add "map jumping" or whatever, because expanding the map beyond the boundaries is not possible)

That's very interesting information, and yes, pure ballistics would actually make the 5.56x45mm M855A1 round more effective. However, the DayZ ballistics system is not as advanced and it's based on a per damage basis, and 7.62x39mm has a higher damage per bullet. I hope we get a better ballistic system down the road, because environmental factors and velocity are not important at the moment (I believe velocity exists, but it has very limited effect on anything but travel distance and drop) The M4A1 should be a better weapon in most respects, but gameplay wise it's much worse, even if many of them are unintended or bugs. Hopefully regular maintenance and relaibility become a factor, to the point that the AKM is at least noticeably better, in that regard. Now, it's obviously massively overplayed that AK series of rifles are nearly invincible and that AR-15/M16 platforms cannot fire a single shot without jamming. The jamming problems only dramatically affected the XM16E1 and M16, but were essentially solved with the M16A1 and are no longer prevalent with M16A2 type rifles. Hell, even the original AK-47 rifles were replaced rather quickly because they weren't as reliable as they were thought to be and they were also much more expensive than the AKM, which is what you tend to see nowadays. Granted, regular maintenance is still a factor, but that's mainly a result in different military doctrine, where the U.S. military places a lot more emphasis on caring for your firearm, while the old Eastern Bloc doctrine was to get as much use out of your weapon as possible and have more weapons readily available. And you can have a can of beans for that informative post, too :) -
In a country like Chernarus, almost every civilian would be using long guns. The IZH-43, SKS, and Mosin are good examples of typical guns you see in that kind of setting. In fact, there'd be a good deal who had AKMs stashed away, many more people with select-fire weapons than in the US, but that's not done for balance reasons. A few people might have handguns & revolvers like the TT-33, Makarov, Nagant M1895, and CZ-75, but they would still tend to be people who lived in an area like Chernogorsk, Elektrozavodsk, or Novodmitrovosk, rather than the farming villages. The US would be pretty different in some areas. Most of the built up areas on the east coast or west coast would be heavily limited to handguns, and plenty of the big midwestern cities would be similar. But head out into the country of even a state like Pennsylvania, and you've got people who own 15 shotguns & rifles. Hell, I live ~45 minutes from Philadelphia and you can buy shotguns from the nearby Walmart. However, there are no handgun dealers for a considerable distance outside of where I live. The only places you could truly go and see people relying solely on handguns would be cities like Los Angeles or New York, which superbly restrict firearm ownership. Otherwise, pretty much anyone who survived would have their hands on something bigger at that point. That's a weird problem you see in most games today. They call any instance that you're not aiming down the sights "hip-firing", even though it's incredibly obvious through both first person and looking at other characters that its just regular shouldered firing, and they don't even change animations when you aim down the sights. It's probably just an excuse to make firing without the sights inaccurate and pointless, though.

I believe he's talking about it ingame, which is correct. The M4A1's dispersion makes it basically worthless for anything other than close range, and the AKM can outmatch it in pretty much every other respect; more common ammo, more powerful rounds, a higher capacity magazine, and a longer ranged scope. The only real reason to hold onto an M4A1 at the moment is if you prefer the specialized optics, like the ACOG. Otherwise, you're just keeping it because you're waiting for more of the attachments to work (suppressors, bayonets, etc.) We'll start to see some combat difference once they both work, as the AKM has no suppressor or bayonet. -
The Community's List of Suggested Weapons for Dayz Standalone (Version: 1.29)
Chaingunfighter replied to alexeistukov's topic in Suggestions
The TAR-21 is actually used all over the place, including quite a few Eastern european countries, like Georgia. Plus, it would be efficient to add, as it uses STANAG magazines that are already in game, rather than the AUG, which has its own magazines. Chris Torchia, the lead artist, has given a "probably" to the Steyr AUG, because he and Dean, as well as many of the other developers, like the gun. It's not too out of place either, since many of them have ended up across Europe just as the TAR-21. Oh, I definitely agree, melee could use vast improvements. However, those kinds of changes are mainly system based and not content based. Plus, we already know that the devs are working on improving it, unlike guns, which we aren't exactly sure about. People tend to care about individual content rather than the overall system once its been implemented. When we get more info on the changes to the melee system, discussion will fire up. As I've mentioned above, the developers have expressed interest in the AUG, as even Dean himself likes it. There's a good chance that we'll see the AUG at some point, so the Austrians will have a gun to be proud of in DayZ. AKM & M4A1 are already ingame. AK-105, AN-94, and AK-12 are unlikely because they're 5.45x39mm and the devs don't seem to want to add 5.45. Even then, the AK-12 is a prototype weapon that wasn't adopted into any notable service, so it'd be a pretty big stretch to add it. The VSS Vintorez, 9A-91, SR-3, AK-9 and OTs-14 would be cool, if they add 9x39mm at some point. The VSK-94 is almost exactly like the VSS, so there's no real reason to add it save aesthetics. Bizon can work because there are .380 Variants and that's being added soon. -
The Community's List of Suggested Weapons for Dayz Standalone (Version: 1.29)
Chaingunfighter replied to alexeistukov's topic in Suggestions
Right, because the M16 is as unrealistic as a Chauchat..... Doubt it, you see M16A1s and M16A2s all the times in global conflicts, they're used by all sorts of nations, even Eastern European ones. Plus, Chernarus was invaded and occupied by a USMC force, so even guns like the M16A4 or M14 are plausible, because they're still used to an extent in the USMC (M16A4 as the service rifle, M14s as a limited DMR role) Melee type combat was not ever an intended feature of the Virtual Reality engine used by ArmA and DayZ. Optimizations will surely come in the future, as a new physics system is working its way in and the general weapon operation is changing. People like their guns more than they do melee weapons, because guns are long-term weapons whereas melee weapons (besides the fireaxe and hatchet) are usually utilized as temporary weapons or defensive backups. Loot rarity will probably put melee weapons on top later on, but during the testing phase firearms will run rampant. Besides that, there are already plenty of melee weapons in the game. Sure, we could always use more, but they've added plenty, and they outnumber guns by far. Guns tend to make more of an individual impact than a melee weapon. You could just as easily say; "Do we really need a trench knife or the sledgehammer?" -

The M4A1 isn't really that high-tier of a weapon (and with current dispersion the AKM is 200,000,000x better), so I don't see a need to limit it to just helicopter crashsites. They should be reserved for the game's future best weapons, like high-tech GPMGs, LMGs, and rarer types of weapons. A good example would be the Steyr AUG A1, which Chris Torchia & Dean have expressed interest in adding. It's got a built-in optic and is a bullpup, foreign rifle that has its own magazines, so it would be perfect to be a crashsite only weapon, as there wouldn't be too many attachments for it. The M4A1 has many attachments, so it'd be better if it were just a rarer regular military spawn. If the M4A1 has to be limited, then they should at least add an M16A1/M16A2 so we can have a basic 5.56x45mm rifle with relatively normal access. -
If you die in DayZ, you deserved it
Chaingunfighter replied to TheMachine's topic in General Discussion
It's hardly any different, as much of an extreme analogy as it is. I mean, in both cases, the person was doing something they felt posed little risk to them (approaching someone/going to work) and they were killed as the result of a deliberate action (murder/terrorist attack). It's an extreme example, I know, but its hard to really blame someone when they couldn't have known any better. To say that everyone who dies because of another player is their fault is either making an obvious statement (they made the choice to do what they do) or taking it too far (its their fault because they exist) -
I think we sort of misunderstood the central hive thing..
Chaingunfighter replied to Irish.'s topic in General Discussion
Meh, arbitrarily limiting the loot spawns on even private hives would limit the potential of quite a few different custom experiences. I think the whole idea of the centralized loot system is that it applies to the public hive, not private ones. Private hives are a long way off anyway, so the centralization will have a large early effect. Even though servers like "1000 cars, spawn with full gear" get annoying to see sometimes, how far are you willing to limit modification before it just gets to a point that you shouldn't have mods to begin with. Maybe it would be interesting to have only grenade launchers spawn, with an extreme amount of zombies. Sure, it wouldn't be a hardcore survival mode, but it would definitely be fun to play around with. Besides, allowing these kinds of servers would push everyone who simply plays to deathmatch or PvP onto them, so I'd say its for the best to allow as much modding potential as possible. -

What exactly was the point of this thread? Thank you, Sir Captain Obvious VII, for pointing out that when someone makes a mistake, it's their fault. I could never have guessed. But no, it is not necessarily one's fault for choosing to interact with someone who ends up killing them. At that point it's like saying; "It's your fault you got killed because you were inside World Trade Center 1 when the plane hit." -
9mm damage is vastly improved over the mod's, although it's still pretty low. The CR75 and P1 are very capable of killing people, so the MP5K will certainly get the job done.
-
Could have both, don't see why not. The only problem could be balance issues since lever-action rifles are never magazine loaded, but the Winchesters could be made rarer, or 7.62x54mmR could, or something. .357 guns will almost definitely be rare, though. Yeah, it's just that they'd need to add .303 British in order to accommodate for it, and there aren't that many other guns (or good ones) to add for it.
-
Yes, .30-06 is one of the world's most popular hunting rounds, and its used in quite a lot of guns. Plus, its used in few military weapons nowadays so it could be limited to a civilian leveled list while 7.62x51mm could be an exclusively military round and 7.62x54mmR could be the mixed round which was less common than .30-06 but more common than 7.62x51. You'd have to suspend some of your disbelief since 7.62x54R would probably still be more common than even .30-06 in real life, but if you want to have civilian weapons like the Mosin & SVT-40 and military weapons like the SVD & PKM then you'll have to sacrifice a little bit of realism.

How would you combat player suicide?
Chaingunfighter replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
But it can happen, especially because of spawn camping. And that does happen. It could be hard to theoretically be spawn killed twice, but dying shortly after spawn is always a possibility, and 30 minutes is quite a long time. I'm not saying it would ever be an issue, but it's not really solving anything and could punish people who had died unintentionally, however rare. That's why I just say leave it as it is. I see no problem with people committing suicide, so I guess that's where the argument ends, because we both see the issue inherently differently. -
I like the idea of holding onto grenades with the pin pulled, or maybe just letting them down without throwing them. Grenades as duds are also an idea I like, not only would you bluff for them, but you'd also throw a grenade quickly thinking you would be able to save yourself, only to realize that it doesn't go off. Fish aren't actual objects in the game world, they're just generated after using fishing rods. Plus, tossing a grenade in the water would likely disturb the fish and they'd move away from it, not to mention the reduced effectiveness of the blast considering the pressure of the water. You could probably catch a few fish by doing this, but you'd also be able to shoot them with guns and spear them with melee weapons, so it'd be better that they become actual animals in the game world first, that way any means of killing could be used on them.

Balota is in a completely different place, so probably not. It's possible they'll modify it later on, maybe moving some of the tents to a new base or campsite, but otherwise the place remains the same so far. I sort of like the idea of Balota remaining a small, military airstrip while the NEAF will be the civilian airport and the NWAF will remain the same. I wouldn't mind if they gave the NWAF its own buildings, like larger hangars made for jet airliners and maybe a small terminal building. That way each place was truly a unique location and had different buildings to explore, and there would only be one of the original air traffic control towers.

Dean isn't responsible for every change that's made to the game. And it's not like the other devs are godlike, either. He provides a hand in the changes and procures ideas, but in the end he's mostly a figurehead. Sort of like the emperor for a lot of Japanese history, he was always the leading figure, but he didn't actually have that much power post 12th century. Or you could take a more relevant example; Notch, from Minecraft. He created Minecraft much in the same way as Dean; as a small project with relatively little support that eventually grew in extreme popularity and gained a large team with massive attention fairly quickly. However, Notch later handed over the project once development was pretty far ahead. It's what tends to happen when small projects that were never intended to grow large end up doing so. The creators and lead are usually the ambitious type who know they aren't fit for leading a big idea forward, and they hand it over to someone who can. This doesn't always happen and I'm not even saying it happens the majority of the time, but it does happen a lot. I wouldn't say that Dean has done a bad job decision making, regardless.

How would you combat player suicide?
Chaingunfighter replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Or, just allow more manipulation to bodies and keep spawning the same. Honestly if you fail to hide a body and someone gets their stuff back, then they deserve it, even if it's unrealistic. I can't really support a spawn timer because it would get too annoying at times and I see no reason to limit people from playing just because they've been killed. I mean, it gets to a point where you just have to question whether people suiciding is that much of a problem for you. I don't think it's enough to warrant changing anything. -
The only country that's relatively close to where Chernarus would be located is Turkey. Greece, Denmark, Italy, Norway, and Germany had them for periods of time, but not many would've made it to Eastern Europe. If they added .30-06 as a dedicated high-caliber civilian/hunting round, I could see the M1 Garand being added as a higher-end civilian battle rifle. In fact, it would actually work very well, considering it plays out much differently than most other battle rifles you see. Instead of holding 10/20 rounds and being magazine-loaded, it's a clip/hand loaded rifle and only holds 8 rounds. The big advantage to it would be similar to the SKS; you've got the capability of similar rifles without the need of a new magazine at the cost of limited customization and lower capacity (I'd be okay if the Garand had no attachments, since the scoped variants weren't very popular). Plus, it's super iconic and also has that unforgettable *Ding!* sound when you run out of ammo. The SVT-40 would be the other "high grade" civilian battle rifle. It's got more ammunition capacity and can use the PU scope, but you need a magazine first. I actually like this idea now, I think that's what the devs should do.

How would you combat player suicide?
Chaingunfighter replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Well, having bodies disappear in a 10 minute span is probably a better solution anyway, because it still reduces strain but also reduces people going back to their corpses. It may not be very realistic, but if they somehow took enough weight off of the servers so that we could have bodies stick around for longer, then you'd see more people running back to their corpses. There's no real perfect solution to it, even though I think it would be more realistic if we could have longer lasting bodies, as right now it's pretty easy to tell when something has gone on recently simply by the presence of a body, as it was created within the last 10 minutes. Servers are getting optimization updates that should be able to handle the strain of more stuff. In fact, it'll be able to hold a lot more than just a few extra bodies; more zombies, more loot (that also respawns), persistent objects, more players, and just general more content on the map, like newer or expanded areas -
How would you combat player suicide?
Chaingunfighter replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
I don't really see the issue here, and honestly, these bodies aren't putting that much strain on the server. I'd say the best solution would just be to increase the number of spawn points. Not necessarily to make them random across the map, but increasing the number so that its possible for you to spawn practically anywhere within the intended zones. That way you can kill yourself as much as you'd like and you won't be penalized in the instance that you get spawncamped or legitimately die within a short time after you spawn, but you'll also likely be killing yourself so much to the point that you'd be better off just running to where your friends were. This would also help alleviate running back to your corpses, as you'd still be dealing with the same issue of; is it worth trying over and over again to kill myself until I get close enough? Sure, some people would get lucky, and it wouldn't stop anything, but it's also one of the only ways to limit it without penalizing people who play legitimately. Because let's be honest, new players can be killed very quickly after spawning, and camping of spawns does happen. The instances are rare, but it's still better to be fair to everyone when it comes to preventing exploits. Not that this is an issue anyway, but I'd still like to see the number of spawns increased regardless of whether "fixing suicide" is something the devs want to do. That's why you make it random only along the coast, and only in the zones on the coast that the devs want (i.e., not the far west or far north). Meaning you could theoretically respawn five feet from where your last spawn was, or kilometers away. Fully-randomized spawns are a bad idea, though, because you'd have some people spawning in the middle of nowhere while others could spawn right next to the NWAF barracks. The problems with that are obvious. -
They're used by middle eastern insurgents, but not really Eastern European countries. Most of them have modernized to the point that bolt-action rifles are only used for ceremonial or sniper purposes at this point. Almost any bolt-action rifle you'd see with insurgents in a place like Chernarus would be a Mosin, and then the rest would be a variety of civilian hunting rifles, like CZs, KAR-98ks, or even Sporterized Lee-Enfields, as I suggested. I'm not saying you couldn't find one, it's not that bad of a choice to put in, but it's chambered in .303 British, and it's not that good of a choice to warrant making a new caliber just to have it. There are better rifles they could do than the Enfield, honestly. The only real reason that I can see them wanting one is for mod nostalgia, but other than that it's got better alternatives. And yes, there are 7.62x54mmR Winchesters. The Winchester 1895 I mentioned was sent to Russia for wartime use chambered in 7.62x54mmR. However, it was not very popular and most of them were never used, or saw very limited combat. However, they make more sense than most lever actions, and are chambered in a round that's more realistic than something like .45-70, so that's why they'd be a better choice than most. Lever-actions aren't really needed for the game, as they were never hugely popular outside of the U.S. to begin with, but some of the devs have expressed interest and I'm never going to complain about new content. The ironsights on the mosin aren't the best, but it's not supposed to be a high-end weapon. The fact that you can put the PU Scope and LRS on it are definitely the devs being nice, because normally these require specialized mounts to work, even though it is possible in real life (I'm not complaining that you can.) As the game goes on, optics for the mosin will probably be very rare and you'll have to rely on the ironsights or move onto a better weapon, which is really what you'd want to do in real life. The only thing that would keep me using a Mosin post-apocalypse is reliability and ease of repairing, as they were meant to be cheap but able to go through hell and still work. The mosin really shouldn't be able to contest with something like an AKM late game, as the AKM outclasses it in pretty much every respect. In the US, yes. In Eastern European countries, no.
-
That was because the game was trying to simulate bolt-action fire without actually having animations for it. If the creators of Operation Arrowhead opted for a Mosin instead, they would've probably had the same outcome. I always preferred the CZ-550 over it, though. The gun was nearly impossible to find, which I liked and hated at the same time, because it should've been one of the game's most common weapons but it also had a good sense of how some guns need to be really rare. You really had to pick your shots with it, because ammunition was even rarer than the Enfield's, it held fewer rounds, and had no ironsights. But it was a great scoped weapon to use in most instances. The only reason it become so overshadowed is because grabbing hold of military weapons and ammo was much easier, and the sound for all of the civilian guns was screwed up (seriously, they picked the quietest sounds for the Winchester and it attracted zombies from very far away) I hope the CZ-527 lives up to the CZ-550, of course they could add a CZ-550 later on in addition to it. I just hope I get to see more people using it, because I've seen plenty of people making use of the "lower-end" weapons in the Standalone.

Six Upcoming Developments That Will Change DayZ for the Better - Loot Rarity (wait, whaat?)
Chaingunfighter replied to darkgritty's topic in General Discussion
Sure, you might not get to see it right away, but I doubt they're going to be limiting it to only 10 items during the testing phase. It will probably be significantly higher than that, it's just exaggerated pointing out that farming items will be much more difficult considering eventually they'll stop spawning and you'll have to go around and kill people. Also, private hives? I doubt loot limits will apply to custom servers, as much as I hate the "1,000 cars & helis, spawn with full gear" types of servers, I don't think restricting people from playing them is the right thing to do. Plus, many of the fun mods had different loot restrictions that weren't necessarily just maxing out spawning of everything, but made junk loot for instance spawn everywhere and weapons spawn almost nowhere. And mods like Battle Royale had changes to loot spawns, but were absolutely awesome to play with, especially considering the huge map and all of DayZ's game factors. I actually felt extremely immersed playing those types of matches, because even though there was plenty of loot and stuff, you had to be the first to grab it, and could never be sure if you would run into someone. Also, in the end, only one person was allowed to live, regardless of alliances. -
The Mosin was probably included as the "replacement" for the Lee-Enfield, although I say probably as they're likely going to have many more weapons than the mod did by the final release, and many of them will be similar in performance. It's possible we'll get a Winchester 1895 or some other gun, though, because one of the artists, Chris Torchia, has expressed interest in having at least one lever action rifle in the game at some point. I doubt it'll be the 1866, though, as .45-70 is really only used in lever-action rifles, so it's pretty pointless to have in DayZ. The Lee-Enfield is also unlikely, because it's a .303 British firearm, and that was also used almost exclusively in British pre-war era weapons, most of which you would never find in an environment like Chernarus. There are better firearms to choose from. Sporterized Lee-Enfields are always a possibility, because they were civilian-designed and used .308/7.62x51mm NATO and were also much more popular. I can still see plenty of rifles before them, but it could easily be added as a nod to the mod, no pun intended.
