  1. Don't worry about it man, it's an honest mistake, especially when you're getting fed up with people actually acting like that.
  2. Haha, no problem. I was making fun of the fact that people always like to get into arguments about weapons, no matter what the context, and whether there's a point or not. Not specifically targeting anyone, just the entire stigma of it, and how people treat their guns :P
  3. I was joking, man. Hence the ":P"
  4. VSS Vintorez (9x39mm): C-10 Canister Rifle (Variety of ammunition): Calico M100 Covenant Carbine: I have thousands more that i could post, but these are 5 that i have come to like. I study every firearm i like, rather it be fake or real. Gonna have to disagree with that Type-51 Carbine there. First of all, it'd require a brand new ammunition type (8.7x60mm caseless radioactive projectiles), and relatively few other guns use it (and all of them perform relatively the same.) Also, the Covenant never landed in Chernarus, only in Africa and some parts of West Europe and North America, so it's unlikely that any carbines would've traveled all the way to a poor post-Soviet state. There may be some, but there just wouldn't be enough to justify adding it. Why add that when you can have the more realistic BR-55HB? It uses far more widely available and utilized ammunition; 9.5x40mm Kurz, and was a mainstay in the UNSC arsenal in 2552, so you'd be far more likely to find one of them. Yeah, the Type-51 is cool, but we're trying to make a realistic game here man, we can't add guns just because they're cool :P. In all seriousness, those are some pretty damned cool weapons, especially the Widley. Technically the Calico you posted is the M900 series, not the M100 (the M100s were the .22LR variants). But oh boy would 100 rounds of .22/9x19 of helical doom and awful ironsights be interesting in DayZ. The VSS Vintorez is probably the only one as an actual candidate to be added, but it's still an awesome weapon.
  5. This is on somewhat of an unrelated question, Alexei, but if you could add any five guns to DayZ, what would they be? (Doesn't matter whether realistic or not, and fictional or not)

    Emotions-Possible KOS Deterrent

And what I'm saying in this regard is that an emotion system will simply not do the job well for the downsides it gives. We'll have to wait and see. But anyone you play DayZ with that aren't friends you've met elsewhere would've been "two randoms interacting" at some point. Increasing the number of possibilities will increase the chance of it happening.I've never once said it will stop it or even alleviate it, hence "Yeah, some people will still take the opportunity to..." In fact, I've argued against people who try and make the point that we should only find 1 bullet a year so you wouldn't use it to kill others. However, rarer ammunition would indeed decrease the amount of senseless deathmatching and player-hunting on the coasts/high value areas, because you are less able to do so, and it's a willed action. Most people that will kill anyone who runs into them will likely continue to do so, but you'll see far less of people sniping or taking out people who are far enough that they can be avoided. Even then, it makes the action of KoS more costly, so it's still a justified move. But it simply does not make sense. You can't tell that someone's "been through shit" or "killed a lot of people" simply by looking at them or being around them. It's much too far a break from reality. In real life post-apocalypse you'd be able to get away with murder far easier, when there's no law and many people have no one looking after them or keeping track of them. So it actually does make sense that people can get away with it, it's a lawless society. If people want to try and hunt down bandits & killers, then let them do that. But don't set up some system that does the work for them.

    Emotions-Possible KOS Deterrent

That's the problem - there is no way that this kind of system could be persistent and unobtrusive, and at the same time remain efficient and not be clunky. KoS and "griefing" need to be alleviated using more subtle and realistic concepts, not strange telepathic communication or ambient music (music was removed for a reason, you know). One of the most important things it to give people a common goal, i.e. have vehicle parts & building materials take up large spaces of inventory, and you encourage people to build a base or restore a car as a team, rather than on their own. Make ammunition, firearms, and weapons in general more rare, and people will be less inclined to use them. Yeah, some people will still take every opportunity they get to shoot at people they see, but you'll have far fewer people "hunting" along the coast and probably see a steady increase in interaction. And, of course, the environment can be made more hostile. Not to the point that everyone is forced to work together and we throw away group competition or lone wolf playstyles, but at least to the point that basic interaction, like trading or actual banditry, is encouraged. You can't "look into someone's path" or accurately assume that "there's something wrong about this guy" with mental projections. Yeah, we all make judgements based on people's appearances and actions (sometimes wrongly so), but that should remain it in DayZ - if some guy looks hostile, you should know not to trust him. Granted, yes, people can deceive, but that's all a part of the fun and realism of the game. You should have to use your own judgement, not some feature that may not even be giving you useful information. And I honestly fail to see how this will alleviate KoS anyway, because typically rampant KoS'ers will kill you anyway. You won't get a chance to interact with them, because they'll just shoot you. Honestly this is only making it worse for more interesting ways of hostile playstyles to come about, not actually deathmatchers or KoS'ers.

Do we really need more towns?

Where Pobeda dam precisely was is now occupied by Novo, probably the most notable new town/city of them all. Also, they actually did re-implement the dam recently, so I don't see what you're whining about.
  9. Chaingunfighter

    Bipod removed?

I believe they are supposed to be able to be folded. The suppressors clearly haven't worked, and the bipod only decreased dispersion, but didn't actually have any effect on recoil when deployed.
  10. Chaingunfighter

    Bipod removed?

Bipods, suppressors, and the buttstocks have all disappeared because they aren't working as they should.
  11. I can stand by that - they really need to decide what kind of foreign involvement they want when deciding to depict guns. The HK-417 itself would (at least to me) be consistent with the "Navy SEAL" weapons (i.e. Amphibia and M4A1), because it's (unofficially) seen some use with them. Then again, if that were the explanation, there'd only be one or two at best, and I find it extremely hard to believe an elite special operations force would be dying left and right in order to leave behind only some of their gear. It could also be in the future, and some foreign participant decided to adopt the HK-417 by the time of DayZ and use it in Chernarus, same with the FNX-45 (which, in ArmA 3's timeline, became a NATO standard sidearm). It's a lousy excuse saying "oh, well in this timeline Chernarus decided to adopt 500 guns and every other country invaded them at the same time for some reason", but that's all there is. The FN FAL seems to be the main battle rifle on the devs' agenda for now (or at least Chris'), and that's definitely one of the more realistic ones. The H&K G3 was also planned, and he's said that he'd be cool with an SVT, so I think we've got battle rifles pretty well sorted out even with just those three. I am quite sad that (likely) no M14 will be added, though.
  12. I'll admit - I only want it because I think it's cool, even though most people would probably just say; "what the fuck is that thing?", because it's so obscure. I'm going to assume you're okay with the SVT-40, though. Would that be any better? (Realistically speaking, not "it looks way too tacticool for DayZ" speaking.)
  13. How about the SIG SG-510 for an interestingly-designed 7.62x51mm battle rifle? Known for being far more accurate than typical mass-produced FAL or G3 rifles, and with a capacity of 20-24-30 rounds, rather than only 20, it'd be a pretty interesting gun to find. These guns are also not known for being modular, so they make up for high accuracy, power, and capacity by essentially remaining the same for the entirety of the game. It's not the most realistic weapon, being that it's only used by Switzerland and a few other small European countries in notable quantity. However, considering that it's a decent-tier battle rifle, it'd probably be a helicopter crashsite weapon anyway, so you could simply argue that Swiss UN troops were among those deployed to Chernarus in midst of the outbreak. Oh, and obviously this;

So... now people get to spawn with gear if they so choose? Seems to me like the bandit perks would be encouraging killing anyway - "not only can you kill everyone you want but we'll give you clothing that's better than standard loot you can find!" Yeah, it's not forcing anyone to wear them, but that isn't the only problem with an emotion/humanity/identification system. No side has better stuff... yes, but acquiring the two is not at all equivalent. Killing 20 players is far easier than finding 20 blood bags/saline kits and administering them. It's also only beneficial to two specific playstyles; people who kill a lot (many players), and medics (a few players) [And not every medic is going to do blood bags]. There are a million other ways that heroes can and do help people, and a million ways bandits can be bandits without directly killing everyone. Then, of course, there are the neutral people, who don't go out of their way to be bandits/kill but also don't make an effort to help others. So with this you really would be encouraging people to kill. How about there are no gamey effects at all based on your playstyle? No random identifiers, no insanity, no message popups or "gut feelings", just your own personal judgment and that person's actions and characteristics. Just as it is in the real world.

Will There Ever be "Epoch" for Standalone?

DayZ Standalone is not at all based off of Epoch, which was one of many of the mod's 'mods'. (though some features of Epoch may have indirectly inspired it) Modding is not currently supported on the DayZ Standalone, and is not expected to be for some time (likely not until release 1.0) However, if the creators so choose, it's very possible that they'll make a variation of Epoch for the Standalone. Epoch is, however, being made into a standalone mod for ArmA 3, vastly improved over ArmA 2's variation (in my opinion). I'd expect that even if Epoch itself is never recreated on the Standalone (though the creators would be fools not to take advantage, DayZ Standalone having been built precisely for this type of gameplay), there will undoubtedly be many mods utilizing similar features. I honestly doubt you'll be let down.
  16. It's the first gun that may come to your mind, but that doesn't at all mean it makes sense. Uzis are used (or have been used) in over 70 countries, including Croatia, Estonia, Poland, Romania, and Turkey, and over 10 million have been produced since 1950, for over 64 years. The TEC-9 was only produced from 1985 to 2001 (with about 250,000 made), never used by a single military or police organization, and not to mention many of them were destroyed in places like California and New York where they were banned by name and it was illegal to have one at all. There are still a good number of them around, but almost all of them are in the US and Mexico, so the only people outside of North America who'd own one would be collectors. The BSP is somewhat realistic, but the problem is, it's an improvised SMG, so there's no consistency in how they're available and there are many differences among variants. There's also the question of whether they'd spawn or be built... in which case you'd need plenty of tools or have to explain why there are so many improvised SMGs around. The Uzi is definitely the most realistic of them, and it's probably one of the most realistic 9x19mm SMGs they can add at all (if not the most realistic) Not saying I don't want either the TEC-9 or BSP, just stating that clearly the Uzi is more realistic.

    Change AK-101 to AK-108

Or they could just add the AK-108 in addition to the AK-101 (assuming they give it the correct magazine) Regardless, AKs are good for now.
  18. Chaingunfighter

    Change AK-101 to AK-108

Because it's not. The AKM is the most common (along with the Chinese Type 56). Original AK-47s were still produced in fairly large numbers, just not to the extent of the AKM, because the AKM was far cheaper. Original AK-47s are still found around today, but typically you see AKMs or one of the many foreign copies, not actual AK-47s. (Top: AK-47 | Bottom: AKM, in game) What would be the point of adding in the AK-47 anyway? It's functionally identical to the AKM and nearly identical in appearance. The only real reason to add it would be for variety, but it's the most pointless kind of variety because it is hardly even noticeably different to a gun already ingame. Granted, at this point I don't think there's any reason to keep the AK-101 (magazine is just a re-textured AK-74 mag), but at least the AK-101 and AK-74 use two separate calibers. If they want another 7.62x39mm AK-looking AR (which they don't at all need), then they could probably do the SA Vz. 58 At least this looks considerably different and functions separately. (It's not even an AK variant at all) Still, the only other actual AK rifle I really care for is the AN-94 Otherwise I think we've got a pretty well fleshed out AK system.

    DayZ Lack of Social Realism

Don't trust anyone. Seriously some of my closest (to the point of IRL) friends have killed me ingame, for dumb reasons or simply to piss me off. Granted I'm not no longer friends with them for it, nor would I say this happens too often when we play seriously, but if you are playing seriously, always put yourself first. No matter what. Talking about it is fine - discussion is something that's always welcome (I don't see anyone really upset that it was even brought up.) The difference is that trying to suggest a forced change in psychological behavior typically does not come across well in a game where "doing what you want" is prevalent. Going about it with things like 30 minute respawn timers for new-spawns also have plenty of downsides. Rule of thumb for any discussion or debate ever, is don't bring forward an idea and expect it to be well received and/or taken seriously. And if you must argue about it, accept that the people you're arguing with are very unlikely to change their mind(s).

Status Report - Week of 27 Oct 14

Yeah, they've made this far more extensive than I even believed we would awhile ago - which is great. Hopefully illness ties in to many other factors - eating too little (or too much) food should increase your chance of risk, and if they want to go in depth, less nutritious food. Illness should affect your shaking when holding weapons/items in your hands, and determine the overall energy level of your character (someone who is 'sick' grows tired at a faster rate). And, of course, people should eventually build up tolerances to diseases, giving you an incentive to keep on going (less likely to get sick.) Likewise, people who get sick too much or use medication too often should have a chance of developing an addiction to it, which can be problematic in of itself.
  21. Chaingunfighter

    Comfort level

While I do agree the food, hydration, and nutrition systems have much to be improved and expanded upon, I honestly believe that the rate at which you can starve/die of dehydration needs to be exaggerated in order to make it an actual gameplay factor. I mean, yes, it takes days in real life whereas it can only be minutes in DayZ, something which will obviously be adjusted, but the game would benefit much more were the hunger systems put as more of a threat to you rather than something you can use to "improve" yourself. Granted, getting more benefits from being full and energized (on 'healthy' foods) is something I can absolutely stand by, just not in a way that replaces the system.
  22. They're similar, but not the same. Arma 3's ACP-C2 DayZ's "1911" The most obvious difference is the cuts on the slide, and of course the texturing. Granted they probably used the same source model and just modified it to create DayZ's (assuming it was made for ArmA 3 originally, which it likely was as it's been present since ArmA 3's own alpha. However, a lot of assets are shared between the teams so it's hard to know for sure) Still, if they did end up doing that, they should probably add the MP-443 and Walther P99, because both are fairly realistic and the assets are already there, so why not? I agree with most of what you'd said. Were they not cool guns/interesting for gameplay, there's no incentive to have them at all. However, at the end of the day we've got to remember that it's a video game, and very few games ever really do the job of realism perfectly. Even other prominent post-apocalyptic Eastern European games like STALKER or the Metro series are full of things that quite clearly should not be there, or at least not exist to the degree that they spawn. Granted, yes, I understand the whole point of debating about it is so that eventually some game (in this case DayZ) will do it right, but it's something to think about. Just don't get hung up about it and all's well (not that you haven't, that statement sort of applies to everyone on all sides of the 'realism vs authenticity vs gameplay vs immersion vs whatever' argument.)

    I hate bambi

There are a billion reasons why you die as a freshspawn, and yes, that includes "being a dick" and running up to geared players. There are, of course, many other reasons you can die - suicide to get a better spawn, starvation/thirst, zombies, bugs/glitches, other freshspawns, or by well-geared players roaming the coast for newspawns. So, yes, it's "unrealistic" that people would run after well-equipped others (not inherently, but for the most part I see the point), but you'd honestly be making the game a million times more frustrating and giving more power to those who hunt fresh spawns. You'd basically be encouraging people to hunt fresh spawns, something already common. Happened to spawn near Berezino? Eliminated by a clan before you could even get to the woods. Now you can wait thirty minutes and hope that it doesn't happen again. No thanks. At this point it's a well accepted risk that wandering near the coast will invariably result in hostile encounters from most other people. It's not like being attacked by fresh spawns is a huge problem, the only cases they'll win is if you were completely negligent, in which case you probably deserved to lose your gear.
  24. That's originally how I felt about the situation - as many guns & calibers as possible, even for guns & calibers with extremely limited variety or that you'd almost never find. However, that's impractical for development. More guns of all kinds are always welcome to me, but I feel like it's a good idea to flesh out the different kinds of guns first, and it's not realistic to expect that (despite how much I'd love it to be) every gun under the sun can/will be added. It's more so arguing on the merits of what should be added first in that respect, because a Saiga would ultimately be better than the SPAS. That isn't saying that it shouldn't be added, just that given limited development resources and time, the Saiga would be more beneficial to the game. I do hope that weapons eventually get expanded on for variety alone, not because of gameplay purposes, but that's not for this stage. Right now we need a good set of variable weapons.
  25. I wouldn't say the AUG or MP5K are inherently bad choices. There aren't a whole lot of bullpup ARs that really see major widespread use around Eastern Europe, it's fairly inconsistent, but among guns like the TAR-21, FN F2000, and Vepr, the AUG is not absent. Plus, seeing what they've discussed, there's a lot they want to do with the AUG, so there's definitely room for other rifles. Likewise, the moshpit that is called the MP5K isn't so much a poor choice, but rather that a full sized variant ala the MP5A2/A3 would have been a better choice. And they did give it the PDW stock, so it's much more believable. The Makarov, Rak, and AK are perfectly fine for the scenario. It's the specific variants that make it odd - the 'AK-101' (not even an AK-101, just a renamed AK-74M), the PM-73 (again, model of a PM-63, renamed), and Makarov IJ-70-17F (Only gun of the three actually originally modeled to be as it is ingame.) And there's nothing to say that the Baikal Makarov is a bad choice, it's just that the PM would've obviously been the more realistic choice. I wouldn't lose sleep over things like this, but that's just me. The Blaze, Derringer, and Rossi are somewhat unique in their own respects. Blaser guns aren't weapons you don't find in Eastern Europe. It's not like the B95 itself is somehow out of place, it's just that the rate at which it spawns is unrealistic for the real variant of the rifle it's supposed to represent. The RG17 and Rossi were clearly done because the devs wanted a lever-action rifle and derringer in the game. There aren't really any guns of those kinds in notable quantity to say those were poor choices compared to other weapons. Under assumed realism, both series of weapons would best be left absent, but in this case it's hard to compare. And the FNX was done simply because it was a new resource at the time and no other pistols existed. Granted, I'm not sure why they didn't choose to add the Walther P99 or MP-443 instead, but that's probably for the same reason all of the other guns exist - the devs thought that they were cool and/or were unique enough in respects to gameplay to warrant them being added. (Also, I don't know about you, but the PM-73 is extremely rare. I've only ever found mags for it, and across the board very few people have used it since it was released.)
