  1. The base itself (from a programing perspective) would not PHYSICALLY be a part of the map. it would be an entirely separate cell that you load into, with the environment rendered by the server (hence the limited number of layouts), and the equipment/items (as well as the base's access location) attached to your character the same way your character and his items are attached to the hive. As to the problem of dying and running back to your base to resupply, your base data gets wiped on death, just like the rest of your character data. The new guy you spawn as wouldn't know about the hidden cache, after all...
  2. 500 different locations. Only 40 players on a server. Odds don't favor it. Besides which, if you ARENT in the server, then someone goes to the same spot you use, YOUR base wont be there. Only if you are IN the server will your base be there. But if someone else ALSO built a base there, it still wont matter. If they aren't in the server, neither is their base. But if BOTH players are in the same server, at the same time, with a base in the same location, IT STILL WONT MATTER. Why? Because when you enter your base, you are loading into a separate cell. So you will ONLY ever see your own base, not someone else's. This is why I suggested limiting the variety of the layout for underground bases to no more the 4 or 5 different possibilities. Would save on the stress to the servers, I suspect.
  3. Was running around in the hills behind Bolota. Passed the airfield by, then came down out of the hills near a lone gas station with a couple of train cars parked on the tracks nearby. Climbed into one of them to hide out for a moment to stop and assess my gear and what not, before logging out for a bit (had some stuff to do). Just before I was about to log out, this is what happened: I heard a zombie scream, followed by an M4 shot. both sounded very nearby. I waited for about 30 seconds, pointing my pistol at the opening of the train car. didn't hear anything else. I decided that I didn't have time for a long standoff (assuming the nearby shooter even knew I was there). Since I had things to do, and nothing else had happened for a few moments, I logged out. After taking care of my business, I came back, picked a new server, and logged in to find myself a fresh spawn with none of my gear.....WHAT??? Im really disappointed. I KNOW that I didn't get shot. I MIGHT have been shot AT, but I wasn't hit... Now I have to start all over getting myself kitted out again before I can go hunting....which is fine and all, but I JUST got done doing that for the last 2 days. And now all that hard work is gone for what? A bug? A combat logging punishment mechanic (if that's the case, that's not so bad. I would gladly accept this mechanic, even if it DID sorta screw me over)? I don't know. All I know for sure is that it wasn't a legitimate kill from another player. I was still alive and HEALTHY (yes, had that status) when I logged out. I was really well equipped too. was REALLY looking forward to hunting. All I had to do was scout out a good hide (which is what I was doing before I logged) and wait for my prey....Now I have to start fresh. NOTE: This isn't a wine thread. Im frustrated that I have to start over, but it is what it is, I guess. and I guess what it is, is an alpha state game... Just wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar...
  4. *facepalm.... Oh my god. Gews you are right. After messing around in my inventory, I pulled up the options menu to play around with a few settings. I might have accidently moved the volume slider, causing me to hear the gunshot, after which I panicked, backing out of the menus to pull up my pistol.... good lord...
  5. I think that may not be an entirely fair judgment, on your part Delta... I NEEDED to be somewhere, yet I still waited for a few moments. And I only logged out after not hearing ANYTHING for another 30 seconds. Its not like I panic quit the moment he shot. I didnt have time for a prolonged stand off. Let alone moving 500 meteres away...
  6. but what caused it? the fact that combat occurred near me (the shooter may not have even been shooting ME. He might have been killing the zed I heard nearby). So what, anytime you get aggroed by or even NEAR another player and you need to log you have to do so for a couple HOURS?

    Coastal vs Northern Population Trends

^ This. I am a US Marine, and I know how to land nav. Shoot an azimuth, etc. But, in favor of those who DONT know how to land nav with a map and compass: It all sounds and looks (Looks? I dunno whatever) like gibberish until you learn it. Then its all SOOOOO easy. Total common sense. AND it would be helpful (and more realistic) if it were possible to use a map and compass simultaneously, like in arma 2,3, and the dayz mod.
  8. Soooo yeah. DayZ PvE? I won. How? I started my journey next to a barn in a town called "Kamysho-somethingorother". I was thirsty, so I ran down to a well to drink my fill. Then I turned, put the coast to my back, and since that moment I have not once seen the ocean. After 2 days of cautious sneaking and exploring everywhere, from the far west, to the northern wastelands, to the far east.....then back to the west and back again east (you get the idea), I managed to find everything I needed to survive: TTsKo pants and shirt Jungle boots Press Vest Ballistic Helmet Gas Mask Black work gloves Rocket Aviators (All Pristine) Hunting Backpack Full Medkit Storage Box Ammo Box Fire Axe FNx45 w/ 2 mags and red dot. Also 40 extra rounds in ammo can. Moisin w/ bayonet, PU Scope, and close to 100 extra rounds in ammo can. Can opener 2 (pristine) bags of rice Several assorted canned goods. Full Water Bottle (Canteen type, not the cheap plastic one) ((Purified)) 3 water purification tabs. Full bottle of spray disinfectant. Healthy status Oh yeah. And a FULL MAP, w/ Compass. (no server hopping, never joined a server with fewer than 10 people, except for one occasion when I played w/ a friend) So what now? Should I just run into the trees up in the northern wastes and sit down with a nice copy of "War and Peace"? Run around and look for more loot I don't need? Sure, I guess I could go find me some pristine defibs, a walkie talkie, or a cooking pot. But those items serve no purpose. And by the time they do, this character would get killed or wiped anyway..... So whats left? I think its time to go hunting....and I don't mean rabbits. As a side note, I would really like to see a new book added to the loot tables: "Deadliest Game".

    I won DayZ PvE....Now what?

I tried the friendly route once already: I put a backpack in my backpack, filled the extra with food and a purified water bottle, and gave it to a fresh spawn at Kamy. He thanked me, and when I advised him to get off the coast, he replied "well im just trying to get to balota". He waved, I face-palmed (btw, THAT needs to be a gesture in-game), he left and probably got my food stolen and bleach sprayed in his eyes. the second guy I tried to help took the storage box full of food (consumable without a can opener or screwdriver or whatever) and a bottle of water, put it in his hands, and ran straight at me, swinging it at my head. I killed him and took my stuff back. The last guy I tried to help begged me to kill him instead. I did. So I guess I DID help SOMEONE.... Nah. Id rather go hunting. But im a sportsman. I don't catch and release my fish, but I don't keep the babies either..... *edit: Just to be clear, I do not mean to imply that surviving isn't fun. Had some tense moments. But once you reach a certain point....

    M4 / Mosin zero different?

I find the moisin w/ PU scope to be reliably accurate up to 300 meters. probably more, but haven't found a zombie I could see from 400 yet. When I do, ill try it out. M4? I find THAT to be reliably accurate up to a range of about....10 feet.
  11. "The military and the police both spend millions of dollars to provide ongoing training to their members so they can instill a shoot first, think about consequences later reaction." I stopped reading your post right about 3 or 4 words after the conclusion of that sentence op. I LITTERALLY did a double take and had to reread that sentence to make sure it said what I thought it did. Its just about the DUMBEST thing I have EVER heard someone say about the military/law enforcement. Clearly spoken out of pure RAW IGNORANCE. You could have called military members idiots for blindly serving the wishes of a corrupt government, and I would have said "That is an opinion. And whats more, I can actually RESPECT it. Clearly, he has learned things, formed an opinion, and made a stance." But no. Your comment is obviously made in ignorance. And had it not been, I would be very offended, on behalf of my fellow service members in my own countries' military, and the honorable warriors of other militaries as well, AND for law enforcement officers everywhere. THEM especially. Nobody puts their asses on the line more often than police officers, who have some of the strictest ROE to be seen anywhere. So, because you are clearly IGNORANT, I am not offended. I would suggest THINKING in the future, before letting words fly forth willy nilly from your suck hole. -with respect, CPL Thomas A. Morse, USMC. Hon. Discharged.

    Do you ever server hop?

I server hoped quite a bit initially, and to farm loot. But not to gear up and hunt bambies. Or bandits. Or ANYONE for that matter. I did it as a learning/testing experience. I learned quite a bit: what types of loot spawn and where and with what frequency. What buildings have multiple floors, and to stay away from the walls in those buildings for fear of clipping through them and falling to my death. General exploration. But after all that, I'm just playing the game now. Once I get to that point where I consider myself "kitted out" it ceases to be about exploration and PVE (not enough to do in that area, atm), and becomes more about interaction with other players. Weather that means killing them, helping them, or helping them and THEN killing them, depending on my mood. I generally try to play a friendly character, but friendly also doesn't mean STUPID. If I find you as a fresh spawn, I WILL give you food and water, but I will ALSO do it with my gun in your face.
  13. So there I am, slowly moving through the southernmost military base, searching through the ruins for what few leavings might be there, left behind by server hoppers. Cautiously creeping about, checking my corners (no 3PP for me. I play for reals), alert and on edge. My speakers are up full blast for ambience (and so I can hear footsteps, gunshots etc. clearly). When suddenly, my heart nearly stops. Over my speakers an extremely loud voice proudly proclaims.... "MUCINEX!!!! WHEN MUCUS GETS YOU DOWN KICK IT OUT WITH MUUUUCINEX!!!!" A chill runs down my spine, adrenaline pumps, and my immediate panic reaction is to dive to the ground and start scanning for that miserable troll playing advertisements over his coms.... of course, 30 seconds into the add I realize that nobody is around. Then it hits me. I find a (relatively) safe spot, Alt Tab, and sure enough, my Dayz Standalone Chernarus map, which is open in my web browser, is playing an advertisement for Mucinex in the top right corner. I closed it. And now, while playing, I will never again have that page open in the background. The End....
  14. what the hell is that? oh ok. its a private clan thing. give me a minute. I need a smoke break. Then I gotta join and log in and validate my E-mail and all that. Prolly be there in about 15 mics.
  15. its sooo f-ing terrifying for about 3 seconds. Then you feel stupid as hell... Then when you come back from the Alt-Tab, you are somehow unconscious. Exiting the game and joining another server results in a character wipe. Sigh... oh well. I guess ill start fresh. Anyone interested in teaming up? I got a mic...
  16. another thing that I find funny: an ammo box takes up 4 inventory slots. A THREE HUDRED ROUND AMMO BOX. Now, if you know anything about ammo boxes, you know that these ones are not very big compared to, say, a 50. cal can. But with only 4 inventory slots, this means that you can effectively store one....in your jeans pocket. Now, these ammo cans may not be the largest ammo cans out there, but if you have ever seen one, you would know that you CANNOT fit it into your jeans pocket. I find it hilarious to imagine some guy running around with a 300 rnd ammo box shoved in their pants. "Hey man. Whatcha gonna do with all that junk? All that junk up in your trunks?"
  17. lol. "packception" my favorite part of this? is the fact that you can put the yellow boxes inside another box. even tho they are the same "size".
  18. DISCLAIMER: This post is not a complaint of the game's current state. I am aware of its Alpha status. The following is my recommendation for how I, PERSONALLY, would like the final product to function. I acknowledge the possibility of being alone in my opinion. I DO NOT however acknowledge the possibility of being WRONG in my position. I think that player spawns should not be limited to only a few specific locations. Players SHOULD spawn in at one of over 300 possible random locations, none of which would be within a mile of a military base. This would encourage exploration and DISCOURAGE mass player suicides, mass bum rushes to Balota airfield, and mass spawn camping bambi hunters (nothing against killing bambis or anything, but there's a line that shouldn't be crossed. camping Kamyshovo waiting for a bambi to spawn so you can shoot him the moment he appears is wrong). If EVERY spawn location was a shitty place to be, it would be better overall for the entire game experience, I think. As for loot, food and clothing and other essentials should essentially stay the same, but slightly harder to find: fairly evenly scattered about, and plenty to be found if you are resourceful. But as for weapons and ammo, they should be far rarer. I have server hoped quite a bit to farm loot. Believe it or not, I did it for testing purposes (not to gear up and hunt bambis, but to see what loot spawns and where, and to test for rarity of items. Its amazing. In one 30 minute session I found an untold number of guns, attachments, ammo, TTsKo clothes, helmets, etc., THREE walkie talkies, THREE of those yellow storage boxes, and 4, yes, FOUR blood test kits. Along with plenty of food, water bottles, can openers, etc. And that was three characters ago. My current one is also fully kitted out after a day, and HE didn't even hop servers). One sweep of the NW airfield after a fresh server restart will reveal TONS guns, TONS AND TONS of ammo, and everything thing else you could want. And I mean EVERYTHING (except maybe maps). The only items I have found to actually be fairly rare are maps to a lesser extent, and combat vests. Not the Load Bearing vests, but the ones that look like flak jackets. I have only found 3 of them (overall, not in the one session), and none of them were in decent condition. Military loot, frankly, should be like this: Clothing/helmets/vests (military grade): rare, but not exceedingly so. Good chance of finding at a military base. (Flak vests should continue to be one of the rarest finds). Weapons (guns): Pistols: FNx45; Rare, but not exceedingly so. good chance of finding one or two somewhere at NWA. Magnum; Rare, but not exceedingly so. Best chance of finding them in houses or in cities (left behind by law enforcement officials or by private owners Rifles: Mosin (or other hunting style rifles/shotguns): Rare, but not exceedingly so. Best chance to find them in isolated (not in towns or cities) houses or farm locales (left behind by private owners that lived out in the boonies, and thus needed a hunting rifle for hunting or protection from hostile wildlife) M4 (or other MILspec guns): EXCEEDINGLY rare, but not to the point of near impossibility. Best chance of finding one would be at a military base, but good luck. . BEST chance at finding one at all would be at a random spawn in the wilderness (ie crashed heli, abandoned military tent, or other random server event). Currently, these things are FAR too common. I once found TEN of them at balota alone, while server hoping an empty server. Attachments: Rare, in all cases. But not exceedingly so. (includes magazines) AMMO: And here we have the most important issue of all. This stuff is EVERYWHERE. Even without server hoping, I have had NO problem finding enough ammo to fill an entire ammo can and then some, acquiring enough for my M4, my FNx45, AND my magnum to supply myself and an entire platoon. This stuff needs to be HARD AS HELL to find. If, for example, you get lucky and find a SINGLE pistol round under the bed in some house, then it must be your birthday. It should be so rare, that even carrying a gun is a toss up: "Do I take this thing, which takes up 4 inventory slots, and hope I find some bullets, or leave it to make more room for food". As an extension, give us the ability to chamber a single round into our guns, without the need for a magazine. This stuff should not be lying around like the apocalypse happened yesterday and without transition. Like one day everyone woke up a zombie except for a few people. It should be more like, say: "it happened a year ago, and most of the ammo got shot up. Yesterday I found a bullet after searching for hours. Now I have the drop on another player, and I want to kill him and take what is his and make it mine. Do I shoot him? Potentially wasting my bullet if I miss, or if it doesn't kill him? What if it DOES, but he has a friend nearby? I'll give away my position, alert the zeds, tell everyone within 500 meters that something is going down here....shit. Im sweating bullets just THINKING about it. Too bad that's not literal..." Does anyone else see what Im getting at here? We should have to f-ing SCROUNGE to find a bullet! Check every nook and cranny! In order of rarity, starting with the most common (organized by weapon type, NOT caliber): Shotgun shells: Most common round. Good chance that one or two will spawn inside a small village. Pistol rounds: Rare. Best chance to find them in military bases or inside cities (very rare in small towns). Hunting Rifle rounds: Very rare. Best chance is to find them in isolated houses or farm locales. MilSpec Rifle rounds: Exceedingly rare. You might, for example find 5 of them after searching every square inch of every building at NW Airfield. Oh, and one more thing. As a person that has lived on a military base, I can tell you that you would NEVER find the guns that easily. Soldiers don't just leave their piece lying on their rack when they step out of the barracks to head over to the post exchange to buy a pack of smokes, m'kay? Them things are locked up TIGHT inside an armory. I should NOT be able to just find one lying on the floor next to some dead soldier's bunk. Thinking about it realistically, if an apocalypse occurred, and killed most of the soldiers on the base instantly or even just very quickly, most of the guns you WOULD find lying around would be pistols, found at the base entry points on the bodies of the MP's......just sayin.
  19. Actually, I DO know a thing or too about guns. Yes, a revolver and a pistol are not the same thing, but they DO fall under the same category (handguns). Lets not debate semantics here. As to the rarity of the revolver, I think it would more likely be found in one of the large cities such as cherno, elektro, or berez, because in MY imagination, I see that being a weapon issued to law enforcement officials. You pretty much agreed with me on the point of the mosin NOT being "milspec". I WILL however agree that the FNx45 might be a military weapon, such as the ones found on the bodies of MP's I mentioned earlier. As to the rarity of ammunition, I disagree. Shot shells should be the most common and easiest to find. Even during the ammunition shortage that hit the states recently, shot shells were easy to come by. Shelves were packed with the things even when it was hard to even find 22 rounds. 9mm, 308, 223 (556), 30-06? NOTHING. but 12 and 20 guage? tons of it. Don't forget that this isn't JUST about realism, but about balancing also. It is FAR FAR too easy to find guns. I don't propose they go so far as to make them non-existent, but as it is now, they are WAY to common. Try it for yourself. Go to NWAF on an empty server that has reset recently. The amount of guns you will find is REDICULOUS. You will find enough weapons and ammo to supply an entire platoon. I GUARENTEE IT. Perhaps guns shouldn't be made to be "TOO" rare. After all, its not as if they get used up. But bullets? THEY at least need to be far less common. And, just to reiterate: Yes, I REALLY do know a thing or two about firearms. I belong to one of the worlds biggest gun clubs. I own two myself. I've shot more calibers and types than I care to list. And I'm a pretty decent shot too (mainly with rifles, not so much with pistols), although that is besides the point.

    dry clean socks

an excellent idea. I was thinking of something along those lines as well. Say, your feet get wet and stay wet for too long. You begin to develop foot rot. If left unchecked, could lead to reduced movement speed as your feet fall apart. eventually leading to infection, sickness, and possibly death (would take a looong time to get to that point). To alleviate the symptoms, one would need antibiotics at the infection stage, and prevention could be achieved with foot powder... Edit: Beans to you, op.
