The main thing that is going to determine how well a graphics intensive game runs on your PC is your graphics cards. My computer is comparable to the typical midrange PC bought today, couldn't run the game for shit even on lowest graphics settings and reduced resolution with non-essential processes turned off there was a noticeable delay. Went and bought a new graphics card, HOLY SHIT. Full res, all graphics settings maxed out, no problem. Computers have changed a lot from the old days, most computation intensive graphics work is done on the GPU (back in the days it was usually a RAM issue). If you buy a $1000 computer with a shitty graphics card it's still not going to get good performance.

Rocket listens to player feedback extensively (Something which can easily ruin a game if not done carefully). Many of the people providing feedback are also using exploits. The result is Rocket is getting poor feedback from many players. Some of the people arguing for no guns at spawn will turn around and play the game knowing once they get a gun they will never run out of ammo (because they will just reconnect before emptying clip). Some of the people saying the game is too easy will DC at the first sign of trouble or run North to the airfield every time they die then server hop until they get good gear. If these features were being run as stress tests I would agree these weren't issues, but he's actively taking opinions on gameplay. Opinions based on gameplay full of exploits.
-
I wasn't moaning. People aren't going to give accurate feedback when they basically can't avoid exploiting (that 1/2 empty clip will refill on login whether I want it to or not) or have become so used to exploiting they don't even think twice about it. FYI I'm a software engineering major, but thanks for attempting to explain how software development works, guess we should have Rocket roll back any non-gameplay fixes he's done so far because that's obviously not supposed to be fixed until beta (needless to say this poster doesn't know what he's talking about also there was a whiffed attempt to fix DC to avoid death in this release).

OMG more LLJK goon hacking!!!!!!
nahholmes replied to PiddlePuss's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I love how quickly that thread went from "LOL, trolling DayZ is so fun and simple because Rocket is a retard" to "OMG Rocket just banned everyone who ever ran scripts on DayZ and ARMA2 for life, what a Hitler, we should file a class action lawsuit." LOL -
Way to tell if someone is a bandit
nahholmes replied to lukeido (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Throw all your weapons on the ground while typing "FRIENDLY" repeatedly in caps (Caps are important). If they shoot you they are bandits. -
So.. Have All The Clans/Groups Hid All The Cars Away On Every Server
nahholmes replied to Nickprovs's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Saw a car driving north towards Cherno, found a bike that I couldn't manage to move in the grass, found a tractor with a blown engine and no gas. That's about it though. -
Was the recent change in survivor's motivations affected by the community or Rocket?
nahholmes replied to kilozombie's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11796 My personal take on the situation. Basically IMO there should be a Flag item that you can put down similar to a campfire that will make it impossible for players to spawn on the server within X meters of that spot. This lets player groups do things like occupy a castle and run a trading post out of it. They would still have to manage the issues of bandits raids, who to let in to the fort, and players pretending to be peaceful then getting inside and trying to kill people, all the normal stuff. It would just cut off the exploits that currently make this kind of thing more or less impossible. -
Rocket I love you: Going out of bounds - exploit or acceptable?
nahholmes replied to Publik's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So that's where all the vehicles are :O -
Never make it that far for the opposite reason. I usually raid Cherno or Elektro, get a descent weapon and some gear. Then I truck north, get a load of passable gear maybe an AK, matches, knife, ect. I realize I could live for 100 days in the woods raiding dear huts and cooking steaks. Quickly get bored and go to higher risk areas closer to the coasts and die sooner or later. I love how people cry about this game being to easy when everyone else is playing DayZ the survival horror game and they are playing Cabela's DayZ Xtreme Camping simulator in the middle on the North woods. (not referring to you, if you have fun staying away from everyone more power to you).

20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Remove the starter supplies and bandits would have to work like everyone else to survive on the coast. They would have to travel or scavenge for their beans. Camping spawns is effortless and provides an endless amount of supplies' date=' take that away and it won't be as easy and therefore not as fun. Another effect would be that people would go into the small villages and farms more since the first thing they have to do is find food and drink. [/quote'] He was referencing my post. I think the problem is he wrote bandits, when what he meant was in game trolls. These are the kind of people who feed off other players' misery. The only joy they get from the game is to ruin it for you. Spawning with no guns leaves you a sitting target for adult children who will stop at no costs to get a gun and then stalk the coast to kill new spawns. The fact you start with no gun would only increase this troll behavior as it would make killing you easier and make dying more devastating. The more you suffer the happier they are. If you get so upset from getting killed before you get a gun 6 times in a row you quit playing the game they sleep at night with a giant grin plastered on their face. These are the players who spam global VOIP, insult everyone, use exploits or hacks, and kill players just because they know it will annoy the other player. Right now it's hardly worth it to them to hunt players on the coast because you have a gun to fight back with and you respawn with pretty solid gear. If you instead spawn defenseless and killing you puts you back to square zero this behavior will increase. A bandit kills you for your gear, for the challenge of PvP, or because it's a valid strategy for survival to shoot first and ask questions last, nothing wrong with that. A troll kills you because they feed off misery. They know you are playing the game to have a good time, and they only want to ruin that. These players exist, sad but true and in greater numbers than we all would like to admit. You have to take this into account when designing a game. If I make an online boxing game that is the best boxing game ever made, except there is a flaw where you can win a round by jabbing rapidly for the entire round and running away which makes it impossible for the other player to ever get in on you, then you better believe the game is going to end up unplayable. No one will ever have fun pressing one button for the entire fight and running away from the other boxer, but enough people will do it to ruin it for everyone. -
20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The people saying spawning with less loot and no gun will stop people from shooting new spawns seem to be forgetting that a lot of people don't care about your beans, the game for them is frustrating other people. If they make the game so unfun for you that you quit they consider that a win. If getting killed means you spawn with almost nothing they will happily chase your defenseless ass up and down the coast all day just to shoot you in the face and watch you restart again and again while they taunt you. These players exist and we all know that. I don't see why everyone is pretending like this isn't a real thing. If this wasn't an issue I'd probably say yes (though you'd have to turn up the Markov spawn rate obviously). Rocket could always split the game into regular vs. hardcore servers once it's closer to completion, but making no guns default will not make griefers go away, it will just make feeding new players bullets that much easier for them. It would also further penalize "lone wolf" players who couldn't just call out to a teammate for a handout every time they die. -

First of all Rocket love the mod. Good stuff all around minus the shortcomings of the Arma engine and given this is still alpha and there is certainly some amount of refining left to do. Seen a lot of ideas floating around about group controlled areas. Seems like an interesting idea as pretty much all survival horror fiction includes areas controlled by groups of survivors where they can regroup between raids. Several people have talked about establishing player controlled trading posts or meeting points, but the main failing of these ideas is the ability of troll players to "ghost" into your fort by hopping servers, moving to a hiding spot within your area, then hopping back to your server and sneak attacking you. I don't think any area should be "safe" where players can't shoot other players, that is not what this is about. At the same time if the only thing reasonably preventing teams from controlling a small zone is exploiters and cheaters that isn't fair to legit players who want to give it a shot. Instead there should be a new object "Flag" which when set up prevents players from spawning within some reasonable distance. If a player would spawn on then server within X distance of the flag they instead spawn at a semi-random point on the outskirts of the "safe" area. Don't know if this is reasonable (would have to make sure the algorithm to spawn players outside of flag area wouldn't put people on the roofs of houses or the middle of lakes) but it would be interesting to see if removing the server hopping spawn exploits would actually make trading posts and survivor controlled meeting points possible.

Most likely places to find matches?
nahholmes replied to Cyan-Eyed's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Most likely places probably churches or supermarkets since they have such a high # of loot spots. Never thought to cook meat on the hobo barrels, that certainly changes things. -
Why is the life expectancy going up?
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Can't speak for the other 200000 people, but my average survival time has probably increased 2000% in the past 2 weeks. -
20 words or less: Super-Low Humanity Detection
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ideally I think humanity should be reflected in facial features. The lower your humanity the more grisled your facial features (stress lines, arched brows, clenched jaw). Unfortunately it seems like something like this would be difficult to implement (I'm guessing the Arma2 engine would make it near impossible). -
20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
NO again. I love how everyone cries about PKers then thinks its a good idea to restart on the beach defenseless against adult children with assault rifles who's idea of fun is ruining the game for others. You can always split the mod easily into 2 main servers (Normal and Hardcore) down the line when you are closer to done for people who don't want to start with guns. -
20 words or less: Super-Low Humanity Detection
nahholmes replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
NO Heartbeat isn't the answer for many reasons listed. Whole humanity system is fundamentally flawed as is. Would rather see murders visibly make players faces more gnarly but maybe outside ability of modding. Humanity needs and overhaul before anything else gets done. -

Just put on the ghillie suit. What are my chances?
nahholmes replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm on day 5, hopping between my favorite 1.6 server and the 1.7 server my friends play, without any problems so far. I'm with the ghillie suit, but I played up to day 4 before on camo. I always wait a few minutes before logging out, including never logging out in a rush to avoid death, although I killed Arma 2 on the task manager when I got in unconscious and bleeding once. Stayed off until medics arrived, and no problem. So that's how everyone is getting such long plays. Log out and call the transfusion squad when things get hairy. -
THE Night is TOO DAMN DARK Thread. Others will be deleted etc.
nahholmes replied to Slamz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm fine with night being a thing, but right now it's not for me. Having seen other players videos I think part of the issue might be my video settings aren't up to the task. If it's night + raining forget about it. Why not have the option somewhere down the line for ALWAYS DAY/ALWAYS NIGHT servers along side normal servers. Seems like some servers are just resetting the server clock to make it day all the time anyways and all the EU players are joining American servers during the day just to escape night. Night is like impossible mode for noobs like me anyways. Probably 70-80% of the time I can play this game it's going to be night locally and to be honest at this point I'd just rather play in light at least until I get used to the game. If realism is the key it's worth noting most people would hole up at night and only move during the day if the alternative was moving around with glow sticks bumping into zombies because they can't see 10 feet in front of them.
